The Feast of the Holy Family celebrates the human family unit, as well as the ultimate family unit: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. The Holy Family is the name given to the family unit of Jesus: The Divine Son of God Jesus, his mother the Virgin Mary, and his foster-father Joseph. We know very little about the life of the Holy Family through the canonical Gospels. They speak of the early years of the Holy Family, including the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, the flight into Egypt, and the finding of Jesus in the temple. Various non-canonical works, including the Infancy Gospel of Thomas, try to fill in the blanks. However, even though these apocryphal works may contain some truth derived from oral tradition, they have been deemed unworthy of canonical status because of the way they present Jesus. While the exact details of the day-to-day life of the Holy Family may be unknown, we can still learn a lot from the stories we do have.

Next Sunday January 5th “Sock Sunday”

In imitation of the Wise Men bringing gifts to the child Jesus we invite you bring a pair of new white socks, all

You are welcome to join us even if we have started already.

The book of Job tells the story of a righteous man who is overwhelmed by suffering and complains to God until God comes to speak with him. In an age

where suffering was seen as a sign of punishment for sin, Job's suffering is doubled when all his friends impugn his character as they witness his sorrows.

Listen to God's Word in the midst of pain. For enrollment and to secure a study set for Job call

Dr. Neil Fanning:805-217-4300. Study is held at St. Rose of Lima School in room 8 at

7pm on Thursday evenings. For more info call Dr. Neil Fanning at

805-217-4300 or via email: [email protected]

It will begin, God willing, on Wednesday, January 8 until February 12 in a private home, from 10am to 12pm. Please come and invite a friend. For more information, location or to register for the study, call Judy Folster at 805-206-1957 or via email at [email protected]

SALVATION IN DAILY LIFE

This Sunday is the feast of the Holy Family, which comes on the first Sunday after Christmas Day. Today’s feast cel-ebrates how the humanity of Jesus (including his entire family life) has brought saving significance into the daily rhythms of our human family life.

The scriptures offer instruction and encouragement on how to share—within our families, parish families, and the wider human family—the love that God shares with us in Jesus. Selections from Sirach, Psalm 128, and Colossians encourage us to reflect divine love and thus find holiness in all our human relationships. The reading from Mat-thew’s Gospel offers a living example of love in the ac-tions Joseph took to protect his young family from danger and to nurture them within the larger family of faith of their time.

DID YOU KNOW?

Always keep your blind spots in mind Each week, more than 50 children are killed or injured when a driver backs up the car. In an overwhelming number of those cases, a parent, relative, or close friend is behind the wheel. It’s devastating to think that a simple action could cause such harm to your child, but it happens far too frequently. Be aware of your ‘blind spots’ when you’re behind the wheel — those areas you know are there, but can’t see clearly from your mirrors. Check out what’s happening around your vehicle before you get in. Make sure you know where your children are before you start your car.

¿Sabia Usted?
