Brothers and Sisters,
Today in the second reading, St. Paul
proclaims, “Do not conform yourselves
to this age but be transformed by the
your
discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing
and perfect”.” (Romans 12:1‐2)
Discernment is difficult, but necessary work. Each of us is to
spend me discerning what is the will of God for our lives.
On the website for the US Conference of Catholic Bishops
:
An inherent part of life is the responsibility to make
difficult, challenging, and some mes even painful
decisions. To make important decisions often requires
me, prayer, and discernment. Perhaps today more
than ever, we face a greater mul plicity and com‐
plexity of decisions in ordinary day‐to‐day living. In
the discernment process, we consider the op ons,
balance the advantages with disadvantages, and
carefully examine the consequences. "How will I
know... what is good, right, or best? How will I know
what God is calling me to?"
www.usccb.org/beliefs‐and‐teachings/voca ons/discernment‐tools
I went through some discernment that ul mately led me to
enter the seminary in 1998. There, I prayerfully discerned if
God indeed was calling me to the priesthood. I did not know
for certain when I entered the seminary if I would actually
become a priest, but I did know that God was tugging on my
heart to give of myself more in service. Each year I asked God
if I was in the right place and each step of the way I felt a
peace that assured me I was where I needed to be. As me
went on and as I got closer to ordina on, I was fully aware
of my shortcomings, yet my heart kept wan ng to speak,
‘Here I am Lord”. Don’t get me wrong, there were challenges
along the way and I had to ask myself difficult ques ons
whether I could envision myself living a life as a priest. God
provided means and ways to ensure me I was on the right
track. I was so glad I was at a place in my faith to be open to
God’s will in my life and to enter into a blessed journey of
forma on leading to my ordina on. I have been a priest for
12 years. I love being a priest and I am most grateful for the
last four years I have been blessed to serve here in our par‐
ish community.
Currently, two Holy Name of Jesus parishioners are studying
for the priesthood in our Diocesan Seminary. Oliver Garcia
entered the seminary in 2019, and Manuel Magdaleno
entered two weeks ago. These are two loving and dedicated
men who have opened their ears and hearts to discern
God’s will for their lives. I am thankful to God, to our parish
community, and especially to their families. Voca ons to
the Priesthood and Religious Life begin in the family when
we share the faith and help our children and young people
to be open to God’s call. As a parish family, we strive to
create a parish environment where every member of your
family is able to turn to prayer and simply ask the Lord,
“How can I best serve you?” Crea ng a suppor ve environ‐
ment that opens the door to God’s will allows for discern‐
ment and brings about His Kingdom on earth. For, when we
open hearts to God, we will truly experience a renewal of
the mind and be able to best discern the will of God.
I hope that you will read further about Oliver and Manuel
in today’s bulle n; and, I ask you to pray for them. Many
people ask how to support seminarians. Your ongoing prayer
and efforts to create a parish environment that invites and
encourages discernment are two important ways to help.
Another way to support the seminarians is by giving to the
Diocesan Development Fund (DDF). The DDF funds the edu‐
cational and formational needs of our diocesan seminarians.
If you have not yet done so, please make a pledge and give to
the DDF. (You can donate to the DDF Fund using our Parish
Online Giving program.)
There is another way to directly help Holy Name’s seminari‐
ans, Oliver and Manuel. From me to me, they will have
personal needs that are not provided for by the Diocese,
like purchasing personal toiletries, fixing personal computers,
repairing vehicles or other needs. I have created a Parish
Seminarian Fund to specifically assist Holy Name of Jesus
Parish seminarians with some of these personal needs; and,
I invite you to join me in suppor ng them. If you would like
to help, please contribute to the “THNJ Parish Seminarian
Fund” either by check or through our Online Giving program.
I thank you in advance for all of the ways you support our
parish seminarians and their discernment journey.
Are you or a family member wondering whether God is calling
you to the priesthood? Please call or email me, and I will be
happy to listen and assist you.
Together, we glorify Christ’s Holy Name!

veces dolorosas. Para tomar decisiones importantes,
a menudo se requiere empo, oración y discerni‐
miento. Tal vez hoy más que nunca, enfrentamos
decisiones múl ples y complejas en nuestra vida
co diana. En el proceso de discernimiento, consider‐
amos las alterna vas, balanceamos las ventajas y
desventajas, y examinamos cuidadosamente las con‐
secuencias.
correcto, o mejor? ¿Cómo voy a saber quién Dios me
está llamando a ser?"
www.usccb.org/es/beliefs‐and‐teachings/voca ons/recursos‐para‐el‐
discernimiento.cfm
Agradezco a Dios, a nuestra
Santo Nombre, Oliver y Manuel.
He creado
Juntos, ¡glorificamos
el Santo Nombre de Cristo!

SAINT GREGORY THE GREAT (540‐604) September 3
Imagine, fourteen hundred years a er death, boas ng a best‐
selling CD! Yet outside the Church and within, Gregorian chant is
enjoying a renaissance. Still, the timeless sacred music that bears
his name is but part of Gregory’s legacy. Renouncing civic service
for monas c life, Gregory’s administra ve and diploma c skills
prompted continual summons from the cloister. Papal ambassador
and advisor, he was eventually elected pope himself, renowned
as a wise steward of the church’s material possessions, generous
benefactor of the poor, sponsor of missionaries, and promotor
of monas cism. His liturgical enrichment of the Church endures
not only in Gregorian chant, but in eloquent homilies still gracing
the Liturgy of the Hours, the “Gregorian Canon” (Eucharistic
Prayer I), and his spiritual classic, Pastoral Care, once presented
to new bishops at ordina on. Of countless impressive papal
tles —Supreme Pon ff, Vicar of Christ, Successor of St Peter,
Prince of the Apostles— the tle s ll so cherished that it heads
official documents is the one Gregory coined to describe his papal
ideal: Servant of the Servants of God. Together with being
designated “the Great,” a fi ng epitaph.

Have you heard of The Season of Crea on?
The season starts Sept 1st, the

The Season of Crea on is a

crea on through celebra on,
conversion, and commitment
together. During the Season of
Crea on, we join 2.2 billion
Chris ans in prayer and ac on
for our common home and for
each other.
Inequali es have become more recognizable in the
midst of our recent challenges: Covid‐19, an economic
crisis, and renewed racial unrest in our communi es.
With so many injus ces present in our world today, it can
be hard to remember that nothing exists in a vacuum or
silo. A key theme in Laudato Si’ is the idea that every‐
thing is connected, a fact clearly evident in today’s
challenges. Caring for crea on responds to both the “cry
of the earth” and “the cry of the poor”.
During this Season of Crea on, Holy Name’s Care for
Crea on Ministry invites you to renew your spirit with
prayer, study, and ac on… including stopping to enjoy
the beauty of our world.

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
