Eph. 5:18 - 18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit…

John 14:23 - 23Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.

Begets 1 Pet. 1:23 “having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever”

Sanctifies John 17:17 “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.”

The Spirit

Action Passage Excerpt

Begets John 3:5 “Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”

Sanctifies 1 Cor. 6:11 “And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.”

Convicts John 16:8 “And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:”

Eph. 3:14-19 - 14For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, 17that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— 19to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Rom 10:17 - 17So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Col. 3:16 - 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. (cf. Eph. 5:18-19)

The Holy Spirit• The “indwelling” of the Spirit?• The blasphemy against the

Holy Spirit (Mark 3:22-30)

Page 10: The Holy Spirit - Part II

Matt. 12:32 - 32Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.

“speaks a word” vs. “speaks against”

Mark 3:30 - 30because they said, “He has an unclean spirit.”

“said” (Greek elegon) is the imperfect tense implicating a continual state or action.

Matt. 12:32 - 32Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.

“speaks a word” vs. “speaks against”

Matt. 12:34 - 34Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

Page 12: The Holy Spirit - Part II

Heb. 6:4-8 - 4For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame. 7For the earth which drinks in the rain that often comes upon it, and bears herbs useful for those by whom it is cultivated, receives blessing from God; 8but if it bears thorns and briers, it is rejected and near to being cursed, whose end is to be burned.

Page 13: The Holy Spirit - Part II

Heb. 10:28-31 - 28Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? 30For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. And again, “The LORD will judge His people.” 31It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

1 John 5:16-18 - 16If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that. 17All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death. 18We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.

Luke 13:3 - 3I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.

The Holy Spirit• The “indwelling” of the Spirit?• The blasphemy against the

Holy Spirit• The gift of the Spirit (Acts 2:38; Eph. 1:13-14;

Rom. 8:16-17; Rev. 21:27)

Page 16: The Holy Spirit - Part II

Acts 2:38 – “the gift of the Holy Spirit”

Rev. 21:27 – “the Lamb’s Book of Life”

Eph. 1:13 – “sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise”

Rom. 8:16 – “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit”

The Spirit bears witness to the fact that one has obeyed the gospel (Rom. 6:17, 3-4) thus sealing (making official) their name in the Lamb’s Book of Life. This is a gift (i.e. grace)!

Page 17: The Holy Spirit - Part II

Acts 2:38-39 - 38Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

Gen. 22:18 - 18In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.

Page 19: The Holy Spirit - Part II

Gal. 3:26-29 - 26For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
