Bombers Control Running Game, Defeat HilltopBy T.J. Hug

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

(October 10th, 2014)-WEST UNITY: For the rst timethis season the Edon defense held a team below 100 yards

rushing.Of course, the 43 team yards gained on the ground for

the Cadets is a bit tainted by 5 sacks the Bombers made

on sophomore quarterback Quinn Smith, subtracting 36yards from Hilltop's total. Even still, their inability to run

the ball consistently played a role in the home town Ca-dets 42-14 loss on Friday.

Not only would a stronger running have solidied their

offense, but it also would have allowed for the Hilltopboys to keep the ball away from the potent Bomber of-

fense more effectively. As it so happens, the Cadets wonthe time of possession battle by just over seven minutes,

27:49 to 20:11. Yet, this had less to do with the Hilltopdefense and more to do with Edon moving the ball down

the eld quickly, thanks in large part to their 197 rushing

yards. Not to mention a 71 punt return for a touchdown by

Edon senior Kaden Sapp in the third quarter eliminatedan entire drive from the Bombers time of possession.

Sapp, playing quarterback for the Bombers, had a

good outing on Hilltop's eld, netting 146 yards and 3

touchdowns while going 9 for 18 passing. Though he didthrow 2 interceptions as well. He also rushed the ball 12

times, managing 111 yards and another touchdown. For his part, Smith had a strong game as well. Com-

pleting 8 of his 18 passes for 180 yards and 2 touch-downs. Nor did he turn the ball over. Those aforemen-

tioned sacks gave the agile sophomore -23 yards rushing,

though.Aside from Sapp, the leading rusher for the game was

his teammate, Cameron Castillo. The senior running backclaimed 46 yards on 9 carries, though most of them came

on a breakaway 36 yard run for a score. On the other side,

Chase Masters led the Cadet ground attack with 43 yardsin 13 attempts.

Freshman Tyler Suboski shined in the Cadet passinggame, hauling in 3 balls for 83 yards in a touchdown.

The scoring reception was an electric 58 yard pass from arolling Smith in the closing minutes of the game. For the

Bombers, Preston Klingler made 5 receptions for 52 yards

and 2 touchdowns, including a game changing score toend the half.

With just over two minutes to go in the rst half, QuinnSmith connected with Mikel Burlew for a 34 yard touch-

down, putting Hilltop on the board 22-7 with momentum

on their side and the ball coming their way to start thethird quarter. Yet the Bombers hastily marched down the

eld, ending their drive with a 7 yard touchdown passfrom Sapp to Klingler on the last play of the half. After a

two point conversion, Edon went into halftime enjoying a30-7 lead, and Hilltop struggled for the remainder of the

    game.

Defensively, as previously mentioned, Edon was ableto force some pressure on Smith. Trey Walz had 2 sacks

on the evening, while Tyler Seaman, Heath Brown, andJevi Brandt added a sack apiece as well.

Jalen Towers made 2 sacks of his own for the Cadets.

Joe Shilling, Ryan Brooker, Mikel Burlew, and QuinnSmith each contributed a tackle for loss to the Hilltop de-

fensive effort. With a strong defensive performance, as well as con-

trolling the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, the Bombers were able to secure a much needed victory

on the road. The young Cadets will have to bounce back

quick, as they will make the trek to Gibsonburg this week.Edon will host Northwood.

DEGREES OF SEPARATION ... Edon Senior quarterback Kaden Sapp outruns one Ca-

det defender and stiff arms the other as he turns up eld for a portion of his 111 rushingyards on the evening.

BREAKING AWAY ... Sapp (10) runs past a host of Hilltop tacklers as he sprints his way

into the endzone. Quinn Smith (13) is among those chasing him.

STARE DOWN ... As he uses his hands to avoid the tackle of an Edon defender, Cadet

Zack Van Dyke, a Junior, makes eye contact with the would be tackler before advanc-ing the ball for positive yardage.

YOU CANT HAVE IT ... Hilltops Mikel Burlew (9) clings the ball tightly as Bomberdefensive back Preston Klingler also gets his hands on the ball. Burlew didnt relent,

though, as he held the ball until well after he hit the ground, ensuring the completion

    went to the Cadets.

    CONTINUATION OF FOOTBALL ACTION

    By T.J. Hug

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

    (October 10th, 2014)-MONTPELIER: On

his second pass attempt of the game, re-

ceiver turned ll-in quarterback Cody Cau-dill threw an interception, ending the Lo-

comotives rst possession. Montpelier fansfeared the worst, as they had been down

this road before, and they expected anotheranemic offensive performance from their

    Locos.

Then, as Montpelier began its secondturn with the ball, Dylan Snyder ran on the

eld.Having missed several weeks due to in-

jury, the Locos star quarterback made hisreturn against Swanton on Friday night.

And what a return he had, contributing

    387 all-purpose yards against a solid Bull-dog defense.

Those Swanton defenders struggled tocontain Snyder, as he routinely avoided

their pass rush and turned negative playsinto positive ones. In fact, his 15 rushes

amounted to 200 yards and 2 touchdownsin the game. He also had a good day pass-

ing the ball, completing 15 of 28 tosses for

187 yards. He also threw an interception, however.

Snyder's herculean effort, as well asstrong performances from fellow Locos Dal-

las Royer and Caudill among others, werefor naught, though. While Montpelier kept

pace for the rst half, Swanton pulled away

in the second, winning the game 64-31.Most of the statistics don't reect that

score, actually. Montpelier out gained theBulldogs 544 yards to 427. Passing wise

only ve yards separated the two teams asSwanton's 192 yards just tops the Locos

    187. Rushing yards are where the hometown Locomotives carried a strong advan-

    tage, 357 to 235.Aside from Snyder's 200 yards rush-

ing, Royer accounted for a majority of theteams ground attack, gaining 127 yards on

12 carries. Caudill rushed for 22 yards on

8 attempts.Caudill also was a vital portion of the

Montpelier aerial assault, bringing down 9receptions for 76 yards. With 77 yards on

just 2 catches, Jared Lyons also made sig-nicant contributions to the Loco offense.

With such a powerful offensive display,

one has to wonder how Montpelier wasbeaten so handily.

Special teams were not kind to the Loco-motives, kickoff coverage in particular.

Montpelier allowed 187 yards and atouchdown on four kicks of the ball to

Swanton. By comparison, the Bulldogskicked off to the Locomotives six times, yet

only gave up 46 yards and no scores. Start-ing on a short eld is a great way to score

points in a hurry, and with lesser offensiveproduction than one's opponent.

Swanton also found the edges of the

Montpelier defense vulnerable as well.Running into the teeth of the Locomotive

defense was like colliding head on with afreight train for the Bulldog runners, so

they simply shifted their rushing attack tothe outside, with much better results.

Montpelier may have lost this game,

but they regained their quarterback in theprocess. That should help quite a bit when

they travel to Archbold to take on the BlueStreaks this week.

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

DELTA - October 10, 2014 "The NWOAL game of the

year", "Fulton County's ONLY game of the night", what-ever a fan wanted to call it, certainly lived up to its billing.

In the end, the battle of the league's two unbeaten

teams nished with Wauseon defeating Delta 24-7.With both teams red up, the Panthers took the open-

ing possession after Wauseon deferred to the second half.Delta needed just over three minutes to put up six points.

On the seventh play of their 77-yard drive, quarter-back Noah Parson's 43 yard strike to Bailey Storeholder

at the 8:56 mark got the Panthers off to a fast start as the

potent offense seemed to be off to the races. The Indians needed to strike back and strike back is

what they did.Taking the ball at their own 35, Zac Robinson came

out throwing, his rst attempt of the night was a comple-tion to Noah Castle. The play covered nine yards and put

the ball at the Wauseon 44. The second pass fell incom-

plete. The Indians gained two rst downs on the drive. The big play of the march was a 20-yard run by Robinson.

The ball laid to rest on the Panther 35. After a three-yardrun by Mason Creager, Robinson found his 6'6" tight end

in the end zone. Castle climaxed a 65-yard drive on nineplays. Josh Whitcomb was good on the extra point and

the game was deadlocked at 7-7 with 5:25 left in the open-

    ing quarter.

Enter Wauseon, the top defense in the league allowing

just 55 points through seven games. Delta, who has the toprusher in the league (Storeholder), the fourth top rusher

in the league (Dylan Nostrant) and seventh best rusher inthe league (Jesse Beverly), were held to 131 yards on the

ground. Because of this defensive dominance, Delta wasforced into a passing game, which with one touchdown

throw, was stymied the rest of the game. It was obvious

that Delta was not a strong passing team. Through sixgames Parsons had only thrown the ball 25 times. It was

the front line play of Anthony Werder, Noah Castle, JacobRabbe along with Nate Suntken and Peyten Shadbolt that

forced the Panthers out of their rushing game. After a three-and-out for Delta, the Indians put to-

gether a six and a half minute drive. Wauseon started to

move down the eld as they took advantage of Castle'smismatch with Robinson nding him for three catches for

26 yards. However some defensive stops by Ryan Patchin,Storeholder and Mark Francis made it a fourth and 11

from the Panthers 11. Coach Cooper called on Whitcombto try a 28 yard eld goal. The sophomore split the up-

rights and with 1:37 left in the half the Indians were up

10-7."Our goal as a team is to always score on our rst pos-

sessions of each half," coach Cooper said. Wauseon madegood on that goal to start the second half. Robinson ran

for 25 yards, Suntken ran for 14 yards. After two short

gains, Robinson found Jacob Newlove in the end zone

with a 20-yard pass. Whitcomb added another point to

his four, and the Indians were up 10 at 17-7 to open thethird quarter.

The Panther's offense seemed to be defeated with theIndians quick score.

Delta, turning to their passing game, were interceptedby Mason Creager on their rst drive. The Delta running

game had gained 24 yards before Creager brought the

drive to a halt.Wauseon had one offensive drive and Delta had two of-

fensive drives that stalled to end the third quarter. After Wauseon went three-and-out, Delta put together

an eight-play drive. With a third and 17 at the Wauseon18 yard line, the Indians' Danny Hench step in front of a

Parsons' pass and galloped 82 yards to seal the win for

the Tribe.Statistically for the Indians (5-0, 7-0) Robinson con-

nected on 10 of 17 passes covering 121 yards and twotouchdowns. His leading target was Castle who hauled in

ve catches for 63 yards and a touchdown. Nate Suntkencarried the ball nine times for 58 yards.

The Indians return to Harmon Field Friday night to try

to try to avenge their only regular season loss from a yearago when the Bryan Golden Bears (4-1, 5-2) come to town.

    (October 6th, 2014)-EDON: With the

Locomotives making a stop in town, theBombers of Edon were well prepared for

the out of conference NWOAL opponent.Montpelier got off to a fast start, earn-

ing a decisive 25-16 victory over the home-

town Bombers. Edon would rally, however, taking game 2 25-20. Game 3 saw the two

teams wrestle for control of the match, withthe Lady Bombers just pulling offf a 25-

23 win. The Lady Locos, with their backs

against the wall, fought hard in game 4,but fell behind late in the set. Edon took

Stryker Drops Match To Evergreen(October 6th, 2014)-STRYKER: It can

be tough taking on a non-conference oppo-

nent in the midst of a conference schedule, particularly so late into the season. This is

the challenge undertaken by the Lady Pan-thers of Stryker as they hosted Evergreen.

The North West Ohio Athletic League foe

proved to be too much for them, however.A slow start put Stryker behind early in

the match, as they lost the rst set 6-25.Game 2 also belonged to the Lady Vikings,

who claimed the set 25-12. In a late come-

Most little boys dream of heading to the end zone, ballin hand, being chased by the opposing team as the crowd

Kaleb doesn't walk. He doesn't speak. But he LOVESfootball and watching his older brother play for the Hill-

Cadet 5th and 6th grade youth team. His classmates lovehim right back and had a special jersey made for Kaleb to

wear as he watches from the sidelines.

Saturday though, Kaleb was more than a spectator. Hewas a teammate. In the 4th quarter, Hilltop was on offensewhen the call came for Kaleb to take the eld. Wheeled on

by big brother Austin, the ball was snapped and handedto Kaleb. From there it was pure adrenaline as Austin

pushed Kaleb about 60 yards toward the goal line. Allthe players followed cheering his name. All the fans on

both sides of the eld stood and cheered. Kaleb was con-

centrating on the ball and Austin with a determined lookwheeled him the nal yards as everyone clapped, cheered,

and many cried at the love shown by not just those fromHilltop, but those from the Liberty Center sideline as well.

What happened next was even more amazing. Kalebwas presented a helmet from the Liberty Center Coach.

Hand painted by Kyle Kern at K&K Collision of Liberty

Center, it was painted with the Liberty Center colors on

one side and Hilltop on the other. A Liberty Center playerdonated it as a keepsake. Both teams gathered for a photoand wished the star player well.

Kaleb has always been loved by his classmates whoinclude him in everything. He has always been loved by

his family and the Hilltop Community. And now, he isloved by the Liberty Center Community, too as he brought

together young boys in an act of love, sportsmanship and

caring. With a smile that could light up any room, Kaleb gave

his thanks. While it's a moment his family won't soon for-get, it's also a moment - and a lesson - the young boys on

both sides of the eld will remember as well.
