the ability to see possibilities where none seem to exist.
Aptly, these awards carry the name of one of India's
illustrious sons, Lakshmipat Singhania - a great visionary of the JK Group
who was the embodiment of the great Indian awakening during the
freedom struggle and the face of a resurgent India
after independence.
The Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow
has instituted these awards to honour the
infinite genius of the leaders of today's India
who have chosen to make India their karmabhoomi.
This award is an effort to acknowledge and honour men and

Organization recognizes the need to honour
exemplary leaders who contribute to the
betterment of our country.
Shri Lakshmipat Singhania was a visionary, a
pioneer, an entrepreneur, a humanitarian and a
leader of outstanding qualities. He considered
education, management education in particular,
as essential for Indian industry and economy to
grow and develop, not only domestically but also
globally. It is only appropriate that his name is
associated with these awards.
The award comprises of a Trophy and a Citation.
They are given every year by a high dignitary.
The Awards honour individuals, exemplary leaders
in respective fields, who have exhibited
exceptional leadership through pursuit of
excellence. To encourage new generation, young
leaders around 45 years, who have shown
outstanding performance and leadership, are also
being honoured from the year 2005 in each
category.

one of the eminent industrial groups in India.
The group has multi-business, multi-product and

Tyres, Paper, Cement, Industrial Rubber Products,

Late Shri Lakshmipat Singhania (1910-1976) was
a visionary with strong nationalist fervor. He was
one of the chief architects of J. K. Organisation.
He pioneered and offered to the Indian
consumers various new products in India for the
first time. He made the Indian business
transnational even as early as 1950s. His
leadership qualities were exemplary. He
encouraged professionalism and meritocracy and
was associated with various institutions of
business, education, research, technology and
social sciences; heading many of them.
Shri Hari Shankar Singhania is the President of
J. K. Organisation & Ex-Chairman, Board of
Governors of IIML. He has been awarded Padma
Bhushan. He is an eminent industrialist and has
been associated in a leadership role in many
business organisations in India and abroad
(including President, International Chamber of
Commerce, Paris) as well as various industrial,
educational and social organisations.

Criterion for Selection
The criterion for selection is well thought out and detailed. Inclusive and exclusive. It has
been designed with the view that only deserving candidates are short-listed for the
screening process.
The Nominee should be a resident of India. NRIs and Foreigners are excluded. He/She
should have fundamental leadership values, must have shown exemplary performance
and contributed towards development in his/her field for the larger goal of Society and
Nation building.
The individual must have shown excellence despite challenges, have high personal values
and ethics, be innovative and supportive in his/her field, should have contributed towards
the positive evolution of government policies and have the ability to establish balance of
forces operating in his/her connected field in the country.
He/she should not be active in Politics, Films and Sports (as they already have multiple
recognitions).
The Awards - 2008
The nominee for the Young Leader category should
be a person around 45 years of age, who has shown
exemplary performance, recognised in the country, with
potential to reach the pinnacle in the years to come.
And last, but not the least, any other differentiator
deemed appropriate by the Advisory Committees/the
Jury.

The Process
The award process is initiated with the Call for Nominations through Newspapers across
the country along with other multi channels media. Nominations are also called from
various Govt., Semi-Govt., private institutions and NGOs through mailers, along with
nomination forms.
Once the nominations are received, research is conducted to get full details of nominees.
Primary scrutiny is done by a team at Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow and a list
of qualified nominees is drawn out in each category.
A list of qualifiers in each category are submitted to the respective Advisory Committees,
along with complete details and differentiator of each nominee.
Advisory Committees, comprising knowledgeable persons in the respective fields,
deliberate on the work done by the eligible qualifiers and a short-list is drawn after
deliberating the differentials among equals.
The Final short-listed names after further research, if necessary, along with
recommendations of the Advisory Committees are forwarded to a team of eminent Jury
comprising Peers and Luminaries drawn from different segments of society.
The Jury after deliberations finally picks one Leader and one Young Leader in each
category for the Award.
