Quote of the week… ‘If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it again?’ - John Wooden

Classroom Modernisation Project… I am pleased to report that Stage One of the Classroom Modernisation Project i.e., new carpet in Block Two (Admin Block), is now complete. This part of the project was undertaken in the school holidays and has transformed this area of the school in terms of look and comfort for students and staff. I would like to acknowledge Sarah Minson and her team of Mums and kids who came in during the holidays to help shift all the furniture and prepare the rooms for the work to be undertaken. Given the eleventh hour dramas we faced with the discovery of moisture in the concrete, that extra help meant that the work could be completed within the holidays.

Information & Communication Technology (ICT)… To complement the new Network for Learning (N4L) platform (High Speed Broadband) now operating in our school, we have acquired nine new Acer Aspire All-In-One Desktop computers and fifteen Apple 4th Generation iPads to be shared equally amongst classrooms. These will be rolled out to all classrooms over the next few weeks along with three existing laptops per class.

To safely store and sync the new set of iPads we are looking to purchase some charge and sync cabinets; new iPad covers and headphones for each class. To help fund this, we are selling our 16gb iPad 2’s to school families. These can be purchased through the school for a donation of $200. If you are interested in purchasing one or all of these devices please contact the school office… first in first serve!

Fonterra Milk for Schools… We have applied for and have been accepted into the Fonterra Milk for Schools Programme. Milk will be given to children everyday from Monday 12 May 2014. We will be experimenting with different times for the distribution of the milk, with the aim causing the least interruption to classroom programmes as possible. The following students have been selected to help co-ordinate the programme: Paula Smith (School Co-ordinator), Esther Bruce, Livi Williamson & Robert Harris (Milk Monitors).

Haere mai... I would like welcome Poppy Freeman, Jasmine Hood, Miles Henriksen, Joshua Smith & Joshua Tuer (Piwakawaka) to our school. I am confident that your time here will be both enjoyable and rewarding.

Finally, the Hororata Cross Country will be held at the Hororata Domain on Monday 26 /PP 28 May 2014. The event is a valuable opportunity to select students to progress onto the Malvern and Canterbury Cross Country events. Children will once again compete alongside their counterparts from Greendale School, in the following distance: Pre-schoolers – 200m; 5 - 6 Years - 800m; 7 -8 Years - 1.4 km; 9 – 10 Years - 2.0 km.

The school will walk down to the domain at 10.30am, with the first race beginning at 11.00am. The race programme is as follows: 9 -11 Yrs, 7–8 Yrs, 5-6 Yrs &, Pre-schoolers, concluding with a Community lunch at the Domain. Parent/Caregivers are welcome to take their children home after the event. It is anticipated that we will return to school at 1.30pm.

Thanks for supporting our school

Teacher’s CornerTeacher’s Corner Piwakawaka (Miss Raybould)

Hi everyone

We have been very fortunate with the weather as it allows us to prac-tise our cross country running every day. This will carry on through to week 4 when our race is scheduled. The children will need running shoes every day between now and then. We are also taking any vests off from under our t shirt before we run as we all get very hot.

Already we are seeing an improvement in people’s running.

As I have 8 reading groups I do not read with every group every day. However, I still want the children to be reading new books every day, so they will usually read it with Mrs Chatterton. Sometimes this may not be possible, so, if this is the case I will endeavour to write “new story” in their notebook which will show they have read it with their

group only.

New children will have started to bring home reading books this week. The focus is pointing to the words one at a time as they read the story. Memory and the picture are very important at this stage. We are also learning high frequency words. These are pasted into their reading notebooks. I will only tick the word if they get it right without prompting and I will only do this once a day. Please practise these at home, too. Information regarding these words are in the front of the notebook. It usually takes at least a week before they get 10 ticks for the word and then they can colour it in.

Kind regards Julia

Kea (Miss Stewart) Hello all,

Welcome back to term 2. This term is a short one so we have lots to do but not a lot of time to do it! This term our first maths topic is geometry. I have uploaded some tasks to support at home learning in this area. It is good to see many children continuing to practice and maintain their learning through

using Maths Buddy regularly.

Our class Ultranet also has some new things up for the children to watch and do. Watch the how to video’s in the media gallery for tips on how to use Ultranet. Please keep practising logging in so that the children can do this independently without supervi-sion.

Thanks Megan

Tui (Mrs Foster)

Hello Everyone

In Tui this term we’ve had some exciting changes—gone is the formal seating plan and in place are round tables, big and small cushions, wheelie chairs and more. The children can choose where they sit as long as they are completing all their work, so far so good and please feel free to come in and see for yourself.

Spelling and reading is now being written in the Homework Book as it is all part of our work at home programme.

We are writing Poems at the moment and I have been impressed by some of the Poems that the children have pro-duced.

Everyone is running at fitness time, even me and we are all getting faster.

Cheers Jenni
