Santa - Carol Heuchen

Santa was having a terrible time.Nothing was going rightand he grumbled he wouldn't geteverything done in time for Christmas Night. The toys they just weren't ready;the horses had no manes. The arms kept falling off the dollsand the paint wouldn't dry on the trains.Mrs Christmas kept nagging him and throwing her arms in the air.The workshop was in disarrayand three of the elves weren't there.Santa couldn't get a wheel to fit onto a bicycle frame. The sleigh had a crooked axle andtwo of the reindeer were lame.Amidst all of this chaos then,a knock came to the door.Santa strode to open ita-muttering "Now what more?"He stood upon the doorstop withhis hands upon his hipsand to the little angel there,a curse came from his lips. What do you want?' he bellowed out.

"Well, I've got the Christmas tree. What do you want me to do with it,Santa sir?" said she.And to this very day, you know, for all the world to see, there's always been an angel - on top of the Christmas Tree. ©heuchan2003

How much can a horse pull?By GARY ROLLANSEA Level2 Driving Coach. EA CoachEducator. What a horse can pull and what it is capableof pulling varies according to many factors. These factors range from road and terrainconditions to individual breeds, physical andmental capabilities. Horses bred with fine bone and light bodysuch as miniature horses arabs and thor-oughbreds can be very successfully used inharness however we have to remember thatcertain breeds and in fact bloodlines havebeen specifically and genetically bred forgenerations for an intended discipline. The following guidelines have been takenfrom Max Pape’s book ‘The Art of Driving’and have been used by horseman for genera-tions. The 1:3 Power to Weight Ratio:A suitably bred horse can pull three times itsown body weight on a flat smooth surfacefor a short distance. A young green horse would certainly spoil ifexpected to pull this ratio. The 1:2 Power to Weight Ratio. The horse iscapable of pulling twice its own body weighton rough or slightly hilly going. The 1:1 Power to Weight Ratio. This ratio isset as a guideline for horses working in hillyareas, across fields or sandy tracks.

The FEI minimum weight for a Marathoncarriage is:Single pony 90kgHorse 150kgPair pony 225kgPair horse 350kgFour-in-hand pony 300kg Four-in-hand horse 600kg.Minimum weights were set with safety inmind for the vehicle strength and controlla-bility.Let’s say, for example, a horse of 15hh welshcob type would be 400kg, the driver 60kg,the groom 60kg and the carriage 150kg. This totals 270kg now although this load isnow 130kgs below the 1:1 ratio. Most competition drivers would know thatthe horse would still have to be rather fitand conditioned to complete the marathonsection and pass a vet check at this ratio.Using the table you can work out if you yourhorse and carriage are suitably matched tothe type of driving activities you areinvolved in.In summary, this article aims to raise theawareness and responsibility of drivers inregards to their own safety and welfare ofthe horse. It’s important not to compromise safety ofthe vehicle ie lightly built carriages toaccommodate the horse.

EAST COAST EQUINEScott McGinness has been a horse vet for the past 30 years gain-ing experience in Australia, the USA and in the UK and recentlyhe opened East Coast Equine a veterinary horse practice on theSunshine Coast. East Coast Equine is a performance based, mobile equine veteri-nary practice located in Buderim but servicing the SunshineCoast/ hinterland regions, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, the lattertwo by appointment only. The practice focuses on performancerelated issues with an emphasis on lameness diagnosis and treat-ment, especially relevant to the foot (equine podiatry). The latest veterinary equipment and complementary disciplinesare available, namely a state of the art direct digital radiographysystem (the latest TRU-DR x-ray package from the States), diag-nostic portable ultrasonography, dental hand and power floats, thermography (highlighting subtle regions of heat or cold whichcan identify acute or chronic lameness issues), chiropractic, acupuncture and physiotherapeutic options. In addition, the recent purchase of a pulsed energy replenishmentunit complements the previously mentioned therapeutic toolsavailable due to its capacity to regenerate normal cell functionthroughout the body, thus accelerating healing and optimisingathletic ability. Practice hours are Monday through Friday from 8am until 5pm,in addition to Saturday and Sunday morning. The practice offersthe latest technology combined with 30 years of international vet-erinary equine expertise, the aim being to restore, optimise andmaintain athletic performance in the horse. He hopes to organiseweekly clinics on the Sunshine and Gold Coast and in Brisbanewhere clients can bring horses to him with a qualified farrier inattendance so that he can address lameness and performancerelated issues relevant to the horse as a whole. East CoastEquine offers expertise and equipment to treat primary and sec-ondary issues relevant to the feet, joints, back, soft tissues andteeth, in addition to checking saddle fit and balance which canplay a significant role in performance related issues. For further information or to make an appointment, contact Scotton 0448-445588.

By DAVID LOVELL BVScRedlands Veterinary Clinic

Lameness, digestive tract disturbances, and dis-eases of the respiratory system account for byfar the greatest majority of problems horsesencounter. The chronic cougher can be very frustratingand extremely difficult to deal with. The horseis obviously in discomfort and the owner can-not ride the horse because exercise usually pro-vokes an acute paroxysm of coughing. Most diseases start out as a relatively minorrespiratory infection. Fortunately most horsesquickly fight off the infection and return to nor-mal. A number of them don't and progress intoa state of chronic coughing. These horses can be very refractory to treat-ment. As with any problem, understandingwhat is going on is crucial to being able to doanything positive towards altering the outcomeCoughing horses can be extremely frustratingto treat due to the complex factors involved inthe cause of the disease. Therefore, a simple ‘cure’ can be difficult toobtain. The problem often begins with a sud-den onset of coughing, nasal discharge and avariable temperature. The horse is usually sick - dull, depressed andoff their food. This presentation is due to anacute infection either with a respiratory virusor a primary or secondary bacterial infection. This phase of the disease process can be treated

with specific antibacterial agents and afavourable response anticipated.Unfortunately, these acute episodes can oftencause significant tissue damage to the mucosalining the upper and lower respiratory tract. It is this damage that may perpetuate an acuteinfection into a chronic cough. In order to understand how this damage resultsin chronic coughing, it is necessary to look atthe normal defence mechanisms of the respira-tory tract. With every breath the horse takes, 8-12 litres ofair passes through the nostrils, upper airwaysthen into the lower airways and lungs. This air is contaminated with dust particles, pollen, environmental pollutants, fungal spores

(moulds) and bacteria. Naturally, these conta-minants must be filtered and removed from thebody before the air enters the lower airways.Given that the horse breathes at 16-20 times perminute, there is a large quantity of contami-nants that must be removed. The normal horse has billions of tiny hairs(cilia) lining the internal surface of the airways.Coated with mucous, these act as a trap tocatch, filter out and collect the tiny foreign par-ticles inhaled. The cilia then expel the mucous and containedparticles up the tract and into the throat using awave-like motion. From the throat the mucousis either swallowed or expelled either throughthe mouth or the nostrils. However, should this filtration process fail, contaminants are carried into the lower airwayswith every breath and can establish infection ordisease. Infectious agents multiply and cause disease inthe lower respiratory tract. Contamination materials also act as a foreignbody in the lower airways, irritating the tissuesand provoking an intense inflammatory reac-tion. These factors result in constrictions of the lowerairways and potentiate the chronic cough situa-tion. The cough is the physical attempt by theanimal to get rid of this discharge. There is also an immune component to thelower airway defence mechanism.

Horseball takesoff in AustraliaBy COURTNEY LARARDIt’s exhilarating, it’s precision onhorseback and it’s new toAustralia. Horse-ball was introduced toAustralia in 2009 off the back ofthe sport’s enormous popularitythroughout Europe. Horseball is a game played onhorseback where a ball is han-dled and points are scored byshooting it through a high net(approximately 1.5m x 1.5m).The sport is like a combinationof polo, rugby, and basketball. Itis one of the ten disciplines offi-cially recognized by theInternational Federation forEquestrian Sports.Taking off in Australia our foun-dation team was requested at theSydney Royal Easter Show,Australian Stock HorseNationals, Tamworth EquestrianExhibition and Equitana, withthe calendar filling fast for the2011 season. In October the sport’s first

national titles held at theTamworth EquestrianExhibition, attracting teams fromSydney to Cubbaroo and prizemoney in excess of $5,500. The Australian title was takenout by Eaglehawk Angus Team -Sam Halstead, Tom Trisley, JackHalstead, Harry Vivers andSimon George. Mitch Anderson was crownedbest male player and GraceHalstead named best femaleplayer. In conjunction Tamworth hostedAustralia’s first internationalmatch with worldwide super-stars flying in specifically tocompete. Our Australian Team coached bythe late Lachie Eliott comprisedof Grant Biffin (captain),Mitchell Anderson, MatthewBirch, Ian Hodges, AlistarSchwager and Alex Willey wentdown two matches to one butthe internationals were nothingbut complimentary of the horse-

manship and riding skills, andsuggested our Australian StockHorses were some of the best inthe world.Appearing even bigger and bet-ter recently at Equitana, ourAustralian and internationalreps combined with the supportof the Australian Equine andLivestock Events Centre(AELEC) and the AustralianStock Horse Society to providecrowds with another thrillingdisplay of horsemanship.AELEC boasted some of theinternational superstars of thesport, including (JJ) Campeowho plays in the nationalPortugese side flew direct fromthe Champions League in France

with his cousin John, a bronzemedallist at the last World Cup.The Equitana crowd’s enthusi-asm was awarded with athrilling final match down to thewire. With the Australian StockHorse Society a goal behindgoing into the last 10 seconds, anopportunity was missed allow-ing the AELEC team to narrowlysteal the win.Horse-ball is a fast-paced nailbiting sport, a remarkable showof skill and athleticism fromboth horse and rider, andbreathtaking for all to watch.Teams and clinics are starting upall over the country. This involves both a cellular defence mecha-nism and specific antibody production. Thecellular defence consists of certain types ofwhite blood cells that engulf the foreign parti-cles and or infectious agents. Other white blood cells produce antibodies thatcombat foreign particles and infectious agents. Should the physical filtration and immunedefences fail the net result is the developmentof chronic lower airway disease and chroniccoughing. However, of more significance than an absenceof immune reaction is the development ofimmune over - reaction or hypersensitivity. Many horses become sensitised to some of theparticles inhaled including pollens, fungalspores and dust. They become allergic to the actual materialdeposited in their airways. The allergic reac-tion to the dust or pollens further results in aninflammatory reaction potentiates the cough-ing. The final problem in low airway inflam-matory disease is the development of sec-ondary bacterial infections in the material accu-mulating in the lower respiratory system. This infection continues to exacerbate theinflammation and coughing.Successful treatment of the coughing horse isextremely difficult and can only result from acombination of two factors:1) Elimination of the causal factors 2) Repair of the body defence mechanismsElimination of the causal factors is very diffi-cult. Chronic coughing is rarely due to a pri-mary infection. Therefore treatment withantibiotics will not cure the disease unless theother contributing factors are eliminated orcontrolled. The problem is that the horse is continuallyinhaling particles challenge the already dam-aged defence system. The best we can do isattempt to reduce the levels of contaminatingmaterial in the air. Therefore avoidance of dustis essential. This is extremely difficult during dry periods ofthe year as paddocks and work areas are

extremely dusty. Arenas should be sprayedwith water before working the horse. The housing of the horse is very important andif the horse has to be confined, stables must bewell ventilated. Ideally the horse should bekept outdoors.Similarly, enclosure in floats and trucks willincrease exposure to airway contamination.Allowing the horse to stop and graze everycouple of hours on long trips is recommendedto allow clearance of airway contaminants.Feed material is also a common source of dustand fungal spores. Therefore the quality and type of feed must beconsidered. Feed should also be dampened.Feeding the horse on the ground and allowingthe horse to graze pasture is a very importantaid as stretching the neck downwards encour-ages drainage and expulsion of exudates andcontaminants from the airways. All aspects of the horse's environment must beevaluated and attempts made to correct andeliminate possible sources of dust and pollu-tants. Thought should also be given to otherpossible sources of particulate material that thehorse may be allergic to.

Once environmental factors have been consid-ered, medical treatments for chronic coughingmust be discussed. Appropriate antibiotic ther-apy is necessary in the initial stages to targetthe secondary bacterial infection present. As mentioned earlier if the inflammatoryresponse is overlooked this will result in onlytemporary or no relief of symptoms. This results in a reduction in contaminationand discharge present and creates a healthierenvironment in the lower airways. Treatmentmust continue long enough to allow properhealing to take place. It will only be successful if the body is able torepair the tissues. In most cases the time period may be pro-longed and the course of treatment can be veryexpensive. 1) ANTIBIOTICS - Appropriate courses ofantibiotics are necessary initially to control thesecondary bacterial infection.2) BRONCHODILATORS - These are drugsthat relax the spasm of the smooth muscle inthe walls of the lower airways and prevent con-striction. The airways are opened up and thereis better movement and elimination of inflam-matory discharges. This relaxation also coun-teracts some of the local irritation in the tissuesand reduces the inflammatory response. Thebest example of this mechanism of action is theuse of ventolin for human asthmatics.3) MUCOLYTICS - These drugs break down, liquefy, and dissolve the exudates and accumu-lated material and allow it to be expelled easily.4) ANTI-INFLAMMATORIES - These drugsare very important as they temper the severityof the inflammatory response. The amount ofdischarge and reaction that occurs is reducedand eventually a more favourable environmentfor healing is created. They also counteract theeffects of allergy.Treatment and management of horses withchronic coughs is, therefore, very difficult andthe likelihood of an initial and complete cure isnot high. Owners should contact their veterinarian for athorough examination and evaluation of thehorse.

WANTED - Ringmaster for MurwillumbahShowThe Tweed River Agricultural Society Ltd appeals to the local horse fraternity to put forward someone to take over the running of the horseevents in Centre Ring at the annual Murwillumbah Show.Ringmaster Peter McDonald has been involved with the show all his lifeand has devoted more than 20 years to the success of centre ring. Both heand wife Marissa have filled the ringmaster role for the last eight yearsstraight. Peter and Marissa gave their notice to the Show Society two years ago butthe Society has as yet been unable to find anyone willing to take on thetask. Always providing well-qualified judges and a diverse program,Murwillumbah's is arguably one of the best ag show horse programs inSouth East Queensland and Northern NSW and is always well-supportedby competitors.Peter was alarmed to have the secretary of the Show Society tell him thatif no one volunteered to take on the job shortly, the Board will have torun the 2011 Murwillumbah Show without horse events in centre ring. While the show jumping program is capably run by Grant and LisaGlasby and their wonderful team of helpers, the other horse events arecurrently in danger of being abandoned. If you feel you could assist, please contact the TRAS Secretary (02 66725507 or 0427 725 507), a member of the TRAS Board or Peter (02 66721884 or 0409 470 707). And the time to begin is NOW... although the2010 Show is barely over it is time to begin inviting judges, sorting tro-phies and planning ring events for 2011.

The PolishedPerformance

Recently I have attended a numberof "A" class shows and in the rid-den sections noticed a vast differ-ence between horse and rider com-binations. At first glance all the horses hadtheir heads down and appeared tobe working on the bit but closerscrutiny revealed many of the hors-es, although having their headsdown, also showed signs of beingworked in a false outline. These signs included: stiff backs, trailing legs and lack of impulsionor engagement. Other horses showed the benefitsof correct training with soft, swing-ing backs, gentle acceptance of therider's aids and good impulsionenabling the showcasing of the truebeauty of the horse's movementthus working in harmony andunity with the rider. Now why does such a vast differ-ence in training styles exist? I do not believe that riders, trainersand coaches intentionally train in amanner that is going to be unsuc-cessful or in many cases cruel, yetthe eventual outcome is often notto the benefit of the horse.

LACK OF KNOWLEDGE Podhajsky, Thiess or Steinbrechtnever talked about moving the bitin the horse's mouth or moving thehands yet many people still do so.The use of the aids needs to beunderstood, applied not only at thecorrect moment, in balance withthe horse and with sufficient deter-mination and encouragement toachieve the desired result.Excessive force should not be used. We still constantly see nervous rid-ers with stiff hands and harsh bitsbeing used to slow a rushing horse. These factors only reinforce a lackof knowledge and consideration forthe well-being of the horse.

LACK OF CORRECTLY APPLIEDTECHNIQUEWhether it be due to laziness, lackof strength, age, lack of knowledgeor communication between instruc-tors and riders ie not explainingcorrectly or not insisting a half haltor parade is applied with the leg, seat and hands and not just hands. We constantly see riders who havebeen riding for many years lettingtheir horses and themselves down.Riding well does require levels ofstrength, fitness and most impor-tantly the ability to be brutally hon-est in analysing why our horses arenot working as well as they should

be. Strength of character is essen-tial to acquire and perfect newskills to achieve our ridden goals.

IMPATIENCEIn this modern world we have somany calls on the limited hours wehave available each day. This can result in often preparing ahorse hastily or even hurrying aride. Unfortunately horses that are pre-pared hastily will fail to progress orperform well when under pressure. Correct basics take time, oftenyears. A horse that can barely hold itselfon the bit should not be doing fly-ing changes.

LACK OF A TRAINING PLAN Modern athletes work with coach-es, psychologists and physiothera-pists to get to the top in their cho-sen field. Are we as riders any different? I think of my horses and myself asathletes. I work hard on my fitness so as notto let my horses down or my hors-es so they won't let me down. I also work just as scientificallywith my horses by using the bestveterinarians, farriers and otherhorse professionals.

UNSUITABLE COMBINATIONA horse must be the correct sizedmount for the rider. Too large a rider on too small horseor vice versa will create the wrongimpression and will probably notbe called in by the judge or markwell. The temperament of both horseand rider should also blend. A hot horse will come back to aquiet rider and a quiet horse willcome to life under a more energeticperson. Avoid clashes of personality. The modern sport horse has per-sonality to burn and requires riderswho can work with his tempera-ment and agility, not restrict it.

SUITABILITY For the intended discipline, pick ahorse that catches your eye andhopefully it will catch the eye ofthe judge. If you are unsure whatto look for take an experienced andsuccessful friend or coach to helpyou in your selection.

TRAINABILITYThe horse must be able to betrained. Can he handle the rigoursof the training schedule and showring? Many shows have five or sixclasses in a row where a horse will

be required to display his besteffort. Now this is tough and don'tforget the additional stresses oftravelling and strange environ-ments they have to work and sleepin. The modern horse is put undergreat stress. Will he handle this or hate it?Some riders have used drugs toachieve submission and calmnessyet quiet acceptance should comefrom training and trust betweenhorse and rider.

SOUNDNESSThere is an old saying "sound ofmind, sound of limb, sound ofwind." An unsound horse is diffi-cult to train. The use of pain killers to maskunsoundness is not only cheating,it is also cruel. At major shows we see horses thataren't 100% in mind, limb or wind. Be sure your horse is solid. Now all of these factors mentionedabove will influence the end result,be it a quiet work out in the earlymorning light with just the soundof your horse's foot falls and hisbreathing complimenting the graceof a swinging canter or the champi-on ribbon at the next Royal. And most importantly go out andenjoy your next ride.

By DAVID FARMILO(Accredited MasterFarrier), Creeping Toes soundslike it might be a fungalgrowth or an alien inva-sion, however it is myterminology for a prob-lem that is creeping intothe world of hoof care.Creeping Toes answers alot of questions whenrelated to the longtoe/low heel problems, and it would seem thatthe majority of us justdon't recognize wherethe actual sole lineshould be at the front ofthe hoof.If you look at the cleanedout sole of the hoof thatis due to be trimmed, and if you view it as asaucer held up and near-ly full of water, the levelthere is an even waterlevel line all around theedge. This describes where thatjunction of the cleanedout sole should meet thelaminae/white line at theinside edge of the hoofwall, known as the trueroad map in the bottomof the hoof. However in theuntrimmed hoof you willsee that this line ofsole/hoof wall junctionappears to be loweralong the sides of thesole and rises at the toesection and the heels, soit is giving the distortedimpression that the solehas a curved planetowards the toe.If we attempt to level ahoof using this junctionof the sole at the toe (seePic 1) we have left thefront of the hoof too highand it will also be toolong. When this is repeated ateach preparation the toeswill creep out longer andlonger. Many people mistakenlybelieve that the sidewalls of the hoof are nor-mally weaker or thinnerand that the toe wall is

thicker; however in thecorrectly balanced hoofwhich has been main-tained regularly there isan even thickness of thehoof wall from heel toheel and it never breaksaway at the sides. This is how this wholeproblem of the creepingtoes evolves and it isinherently linked to thelong toe/low heel syn-drome.In order to find the cor-rect height of the hoofwall at the toe, that pieceof sole callous (see Pic 2)must be removed toshow that the true line ofthe hoof/sole junction islevel. (see Pic 3) The hoof wallmay then be trimmed toeither unshod or shoe fit-ting height, then toachieve the correct toelength the hoof must berasped to an even thick-ness outside the whiteline, and the heelsshould then be adjustedto obtain a level groundbearing surface of thehoof wall. The Creeping ToeSyndrome is the cause oflaminitis in the front sec-tion and low or under-run heels; it is also thecause of weak side wallsbecause the long toepulls forwards andstretches the density ofthe hoof thickness at thesides, it also creates hoofrelated back strain as thelong toes cause a delayedbreakover of the fronthooves. Correcting the toes putsall of these things back tointo balance and achievesa correct hoof/pasternangle (see Pic 4). Take the time to identifythe true road map in thebottom of the hoof - it isimportant for the horse, and the shoes will fit bet-ter.David FarmiloOakbank, SAPh 0418-835-186 or [email protected].

Understand the ‘road map’ of the hoofPicture 1 - The actualsole line of the hoofshould be of the front.Incorrect trimming canresult based on anuntrimmed hoof’ssole/hoof wall junctioncan result in the front ofthe hoof being too highand it will also be toolong.

Picture 2 - In order tofind the correct height ofthe hoof wall at the toe, that piece of sole callousmust be removed toshow that the true line ofthe hoof/sole junction islevel.

Picture 3 - Oncetrimmed to eitherunshod or shoe fittingheight, to achieve thecorrect toe length thehoof must be rasped toan even thickness out-side the white line, andthe heels should thenbe adjusted to obtain alevel ground bearingsurface of the hoof wall.

Picture 4 - By cor-recting the toes, itputs the hoof back inbalance and correctsthe hoof/pasternangle.
