The Hour of Grace program
will resume on Wednesday,
October 2, 2019.

Next week, our parish will take up a
collection for the Solidarity Fund for the
Church in Africa. While the Church in
Africa is growing, many still lack access
to basic resources as well as pastoral
care. Many suffer due to high rates of
poverty and unemployment, illiteracy,
and poor education. The fund supports
pastoral projects that strengthen commu-
nities in their faith and foster lasting
peace and reconciliation in a continent
often marked by division and tension.

Dear Parishioners:
The parable of the Good Samaritan is a very familiar parable and one that we
all seem to remember. A man, travelling down a dangerous road, was robbed
and severely beaten. A priest and a Levite just passed by the man without offer-
ing any help. A Samaritan comes upon the man and demonstrates what it
means to be a neighbor. We can only speculate why the Levite and the priest
turned their backs on the injured man. The Samaritan tends to the man's
wounds by applying wine, oil, and bandages. This was quite a compassionate act
on the part of the Samaritan. The Samaritan was willing to suffer, and this was
quite an act of charity. It cost the Samaritan wine, oil, bandages, and two silver coins he was willing to pay the innkeep-
er to care for the man. The Samaritan gave what we all consider quite a precious gift, and that is the cost not only of
his money but also the cost of his time.
We all have the desire to be good neighbors. God's law invites us to love God and to love our neighbor. This is a very
easy law to understand; we are not puzzled by what it really means, but the difficult part comes in carrying it out. We
can gather from the Gospel story that the Samaritan was filled with compassion. Compassion for his fellow man who
he saw injured on the side of the road. He was only concerned with the injured man and totally put aside his own
needs.
We all like to think that we are compassionate. The word compassion means to suffer with those who are suffering.
The Samaritan was willing to suffer with the suffering. This is what it means to be a good neighbor. Also, that is part of
what it means to be a follower of the Lord Jesus. We suffer with the suffering and in union with Christ who suffered
for us. When we are in union with Christ who suffered for us, we suffer with the poor, the injured, the sick, the ne-
glected, and the dying. We suffer for those who have been cast to the side of the road in our society: the unborn, the
immigrant, the elderly, the mentally ill, and the disabled. We were all marked with the sign of Christ suffering in our
baptism. Every vocation is marked with the blessings of Christ’s Holy Cross. Mothers suffer with and for their chil-
dren. Fathers suffer with and for their families. Teachers suffer with and for their students. Husbands suffer for their
wives, and wives suffer for their husbands. Priests suffer with and for their people, and the holy people of God suffer
with and for their priests. We are the neighbors, and we are the people Christ calls us to be when we are willing to
suffer with those who suffer.
We are certainly not the first to suffer. We are in union with Christ suffering on the cross. We are not the Good Sa-
maritan in this parable. We are the injured man on the side of the road. Christ our Savior, traveling along this road to
the city of Jerusalem, was moved with compassion for each of us. Jesus approaches us while we are still sinners. He
bathes us in the wine of his blood and anoints us with the oil of gladness. He carries us on his own body and places us
in the inn which is his Holy Church.
Now we meet him every Sunday at the altar. Our compassionate Savior meets us in our suffering and gives us the eyes
to recognize his presence and eyes to recognize those who are suffering around us. At the altar, we are strengthened to
suffer with Christ and for Christ who willingly and compassionately suffered for us.
The theme or slogan for this year’s Bishop’s annual appeal is “Who is my Neighbor?” Maybe at this point some are
tired of hearing about the Bishop’s annual appeal. Therefore, if we want to be that “good neighbor,” we all need to do
our part in fulfilling this obligation that we have. We all need to be good Samaritans towards the Bishop’s annual ap-
peal. If we all just give a little, we could easily meet our goal and truly show our love for our neighbor.

It's normal to grieve a pregnancy loss, including the loss of a child by abortion. It can form a hole in one's heart so deep that sometimes it seems nothing can fill the emptiness.
