HET Historical Society - Moving Forward
Ready to Tackle another Year?
The HETHS Board of Directors
continues to get fresh faces which
bring new ideas and energy to the
Society. The annual Directors meeting
and the members meeting provided an
opportunity for exchanging ideas and obtaining
information about our various projects.
Our projects require a lot of hands-on attention.
For instance, our NHMCC Museum could
consume the time of a full-time manager, yet Ed
S. is able to present a great display and still
operate a business.
Dick T. keeps track of Doc Hudson from a
distance, scheduling movement from place-to-
place and handling maintenance items and
finances while operating his business. In his
spare time, he also manages the HETHS Library.
These are just two of the several HETHS projects
that are maintained by HETHS members. There
are also many people in the background that
assist with these and other Society projects.
It is obvious that more members need to step up
to assist with these and our other projects in
order to keep our present HETHS services going
and enable the Society to expand and try out
new ideas.
So when you see an opportunity to give a hand,
take it!

From Where the Coyotes Call
The 57th International
HET and HETHS Meet
in Chattanooga was a
huge success! I am
very impressed with the
Dixie Chapter's
southern hospitality and
all of the hard work and
many hours that John
and Becky Upchurch, Richard Low and all of
their helpers put into this meet. It is my
understanding that there were over 600
attendees and 138 - 140 cars (including one
very small Hudson with one very small driver,
my grandson, Clayton Adams).
Thursday night was a big night
for us. The HETHS style show
was a huge success thanks to
Margrit Poynter. We had many
participants wearing great
costumes!
The HETHS Auction that followed was most
impressive this year. If you were not able to be
there I am truly sorry because many people
walked away with great bargains. I
want to extend a TEXAS sized
THANK YOU! to all of you that
donated items and then those that
purchased at the auction. Also, A
HUGE THANKS! to our auctioneer Paul
Schuster, our organizers Sue and Larry
Kennedy, and their crew,
because of their efforts,
we were able to break an
all time Auction record of
over $10,000.00 in sales.
The HETHS board meeting went well. New
ideas were presented that you will be hearing
more about at a later date. A
fantastic presentation was made
by Ed Souers of the National
Hudson Motor Car Company
Museum in Ypsilanti, MI. A
shortened version was presented
again at the HET General Business Meeting, so
that everyone could see all the hard work that
has been done. Do not miss an opportunity to
visit the NHMCC Museum. You will be
impressed.
We appreciate the HET Club being
a sponsor and involved in our
museum project. Aaron Cooper
and the HET directors and officers
have been very helpful in assisting
the Society to become more of a
partner to the Club. The two organizations are
working together to the benefit of both.
Bob Ross did a great job putting
together a very nice Special Edition
Triangle for the International Meet.
Like all of the other Triangles, this
one was something to be proud of!
During the HETHS board meeting it was
announced that Mike Cherry and Steve Holz
have resigned from the board of directors. I
have a great deal of respect for both men.
While serving as president of
HETHS for many years, Mike
made great strides for this Society.
He has given me a great deal of
welcomed and needed advice.
Hopefully, he will be back next
year for the auction so I can sell his hat and
make him buy it back.
Steve Holz has been a huge asset
to this Society and a great friend. I
am sorry he has stepped down.

HET Historical Society - Moving Forward
We would like to welcome
Don Lottes and John
Forkner, as our
new directors
elected in
Chattanooga. I know they will be
strong board members and I look
forward to working with them.
During the HET General Business
Meeting it was announced that
Aaron Cooper was resigning as
president. John Pontius was
elected President of the HET
board of directors. He will automatically serve
on the HETHS board.
Our board member Bill Lentz
was named vice-president of the
HET club. Congratulations John
and Bill! But now we have to find
someone to fill Bill's boots. We
will miss Bill on our board. He was a huge
help to me this past year as I tried to learn the
ropes serving as your HETHS president.
Bills' replacement on our board will be
selected at our next board meeting
conference call.
Doc Hudson is continuing
to be a resounding success.
He draws more attention to
our Hudson marquee, the HET
Club and our Society than anything
else. We should all be very proud
of this project. He is in almost
constant demand. A big Thank
You to Dick Teeter for keeping up with him
and his travels.
I appreciate Dr. Doug Wildrick
for the amazing job he does of
keeping Doc healthy. Thanks to
all those that make sure he
makes it safely from one appearance to another
and to those that tuck him in bed at night.
We are all working towards a more stable
financial future and increased membership. We
need your help to get the word spread about the
HETHS. We need more members. We need to
keep our membership donations coming. We
are trying to do the best we can to
preserve and promote the Hudson
Motor Car Company, its history, and
its cars. Thank you for all of your help
while we work toward a common goal!

Thank You!
Our Fashion at the Auction event this year was another success! It was hot
outside but cool inside as many costumed HET
members strolled down the cat walk,
introduced by Gary Lynch and photographed
by Paul Meyer and Don Lottes.
Ted Steinmetz played 1940 swing tunes and all
participants received reproductions of Hudson
1949 blotters in vintage 1979 Hudson meet
envelopes with art work by Doc Daugherty,
courtesy of Ken Poynter. Raffle prizes included
Rosie the Riveter collectables, a Hudson
Franklin Mint model car, and a script American
Motors steel art piece. Please join us next year
for more fashion/auction fun in San Diego!

The 2016 Hudson
Historical Society Auction
was a great success in
raising over $10,000 for
the Society’s charitable
causes. We had a great
selection of donated items
and many happy bidders.
Tim Lloyd of Bloomington,
IN helped with the Auction
and he demonstrated
some work coveralls for
the audience, which he
ultimately bought. Thanks
to everyone who made
donations and helped with the auction. It was
the most successful HETHS Auction to date.

A Note from the HET Club
Hello fellow Hudson lovers, my name is John
Pontius. I was recently elected as your new
HET president at our last International meet in
Chattanooga TN. Speaking of
Chattanooga, if you missed it, you
missed some great southern
hospitality at a great venue. The
annual HETHS auction was the
best yet. I believe it was due to the
fact that we had some of the best
auction items we have ever seen.
So, with that being said and since I have
recently went through this in my own family,
lets talk about the elephant in the room
"Estate Planning". Yes, I said it, so lets talk
about it.
My father, Lee A. Pontius, is a great man and
still very sharp even with time catching up to
him. He came to my sister Jodi and I wanting
us to sit down and determine how we wanted
his will to read. He wanted to alleviate the
possibility of any squabbling after his death.
We had a couple meetings with all three of us
and then Jodi and I had several more
meetings. Now we all know this is not
foolproof. I hope its a long time before Jodi
and I find out if we can manage not screw it
up. For the moment it feels right, it put my
father at ease and that's all that really matters.
What I am trying to say is, have that
conversation with your own families. If you
have no family or no family members that are
interested in your automobile heritage, think
about donating it to our beloved HETHS. This
is exactly how we acquired so many wonderful
items for this years HETHS auction. It is not
even required that it be Hudson things.
The HETHS will make sure your Hudson
things are taken care of properly. The non-
Hudson things will be used to raise funds for
the future of the HETHS and its worthy
causes. HETHS is a 501C3 Not-for Profit and
you are able to get a tax deduction for
your donation. Make sure your life's
collection of all things Hudson will be
here for many more generations to
come. Whether its continuing on with
your own family or the HETHS, make
sure it feels right!
Like the Fred Rose and Hank Williams
penned song I'll Never Get Out Of this World
Alive".
Best Regards,
John

MY MEMORABLE CAR - A 1948 Hudson Super Six
Our West Michigan AACA Region decided to have one of their meetings devoted to folks talking about their most memorable car. The stories were entertaining, funny, and wild, with great variety and great entertainment with lots of laughs. In preparation for this story telling evening I e-mailed several of my high school friends who also participated in my memories. I do claim I remember some of the things they stated but not everything will I admit to.
MY MEMORABLE CAR - A 1948 Hudson Super 6
No, my 1948 Hudson was not my first car, however it was my second. My first car, a 1940 Mercury coupe, was a trade in at my Dad's car lot and he offered it to me for $50. It was wheels and at 15 years old I was not going to turn it down. I drove it a while and when I was 16 the local Oldsmobile garage offered me $150 for it. They wanted it in order to install an Oldsmobile V-8 engine coupled to a Hydramatic and take it to the local 1/4 mile dirt racing tracks. They were probably embarrassed to be continually beat by the Hudsons.
Now with my $150 I had to get a car quick!! Since my Dad was the local Hudson dealer I just wanted a step down Hudson. Together we went looking. At the time he did not have anything that had been traded in that I could afford. So we started visiting the local used car lots in Beaver County, Pennsylvania.
Finally in Rochester, PA. We found a shabby 1948 Hudson Super Six coupe that consumed my $150. It went straight into my Dad's garage for both an engine rebuild as well as body work and paint. Of course I had to add my identity with a shaved trunk, a different rear bumper, different tail lights, and black paint. For the inside I covered the seats with simulated leopard skin cloth seat covers. Of course white wall tires were a necessity.
That Hudson was one cool car and after our Church youth meeting on Sunday evenings we would pile up to 8 kids in the car and off to the local drive-in. We were always accompanied by Darrell's new V-8 Chevy with his car loaded with kids. I was not into racing but that Hudson had a lot of low end torque and it surprised a lot of others at red lights.
We had one hill leading up to the entrance to Aliquippa High School that had two turns. Hudsons were heavy and with the torque and the handling I could always top the hill in high gear. There was nothing that could keep up with it on that hill. However, we mainly enjoyed cruising with the gang! My friend Bob remembers the Mercury and the Hudson.
"Don, I DO remember both cars. In fact I remember helping you work on the Hudson and putting 12 - 15 coats of Black Lacquer on it. We rubbed it out and you and your Dad ran the sprayers until we could see "deep into" the body as your Dad would say.
Then I remembered you "bored" and "stroked" the engine. I remember riding up Plan 12 hill racing Charles in his 54 Hudson Hornet and you passing him on the last curve "ON THE INSIDE"!!! Your goal was always to do more than 50 MPH UP THE HILL!!
I remember another time coming home from a square dance somewhere and you going really fast and we went on a sharp right turn and skidded out in a field a hundred yards bouncing over the furrows with the girls screaming but nobody got hurt! The "stepdown" feature was the predecessor leading to lower center of gravity for many cars thereafter!"
Pete also remembers that Hudson. "I remember a number of things about your '48' Hudson. We were anxious to have the work finished. The little guy with the muscles working on it, the endless spraying and sanding those coats of lacquer, the stunning appearance when finally finished. Getting the trunk opened without a keyhole was new to me, as were the Leopard seats that looked as if they were original. I only knew of cheap loose-fitting slip-ons. It had to be the nicest-looking
Summer 2016 http://heths.info/ Page 9
HET Historical Society - Moving Forward
car around. I also remember the outside visor and window awnings.
As I remember, we went through that field when we missed a curve, but you never let up on the gas until we were back on the road. I also remember we helped get some hot shots into police trouble on route 51 in W. Bridgewater. Was that related to you apologizing to the sheriff's daughter?
THE 1948 HUDSON AND ITS YEARS AT COLLEGE My first trip out of state was to go to GMI engineering school in Michigan. I left the western side of Pennsylvania in the fall of 1956 and drove across Ohio onto Flint, Michigan. Because of the Hudson's size it became one of the main transportation vehicles to travel from our living quarters to the engineering school daily.
Of course we had to make trips all over Michigan on the weekends when we were looking for things to do. One of those trips was to Saugatuck, Michigan. We loaded the 1948 down with six of us and headed west. I had never been to Saugatuck and just followed the
instructions of one of my passengers that had been there before.
We rented a motel room, one, for all six of us. I do not remember who got the floor or who got the bed. The next day we were at Oval Beach getting too much sun. One of the more rounded members of the trip managed to get sunburned over every square inch of his body. He did not have a pleasant ride back to Flint.
THE DEMISE OF THE '48' HUDSON. The Hudson traveled about six times a year from Pennsylvania to Michigan and back. I had to visit my girlfriend, Jan, at Geneva College as many times as I could. Later I became engaged and still later Jan became my faithful wife.
On one of my trips back home I cracked a head on that flat head six. Being a poor college student and engaged to Jan, economics took over. Dad offered me a Hudson Jet for the '48' Hudson just to give me a car to get back to school. So that ended my life with my cool "48 STEP DOWN".

Traveling
A Texas oil and cattle man was in
Maine looking to buy some land. He
spotted an old farmer out plowing
his little 22 acres of land and
decided to stop and shoot the
breeze.
After a few pleasantries, the Texan
said "You know I have a cattle farm
in Texas that takes me all day just to
drive around it".
The old Mainer paused for just a few
seconds and said "yep, I know what
you mean, I used to have a truck
like that.

Your Views, Rants and Raves
Dear Editor:
My father was a Hudson dealer and
distributor in Sioux Falls, South Dakota from
1946 to 1953 when American Motors took
the Company over… While I was in high
school, during the years 1946 through 1953, I
worked part time and full time during the
summers.
..... My best story was almost my first
experience and that was in late 1946
when Hudson attempted to be the first car
on the market after the war. With the
restrictions on the use of some metals
following the War the first cars delivered to
our dealership did not have bumpers. We
cut 2 x 4’s and put them on the cars and told
the customers we would call them when their
bumpers came in. Truly, they looked weird
but the farmers were so happy to have a new
car they did not care.
As I remember it was several months before
the new bumpers came in. The salesmen
called the customers and they started to
come in. We worked day and night to get
them installed. Unfortunately most of them
came in on Saturday and expected us to do
the work while they went shopping in
downtown Sioux Falls. When it was all over
we had many extra bumpers in the parts
department from then on. I do not think we
found every one. Maybe they liked the
wooden look.
