From the Principal’s desk…

We’re at the halfway point for Term 4 and the

year is set to get even busier!

This week, our Year 7-10 students have been

sitting their yearly exams. With one day to go,

there is still time to study tonight to get those

extra marks. Now that exam week is almost

finished it does not mean that the learning

now stops. Students are expected to attend

school for the remainder of the term, as

normal classes are still running. There is so

much learning to get through in the next 5

weeks!

Teachers across Kinder to Year 10 are now

writing Semester 2 reports for our students.

Reports will go home on Wednesday 13

December.

It’s not just the students of Ungarie Central

School who are learning, but our teachers are

continuously learning as well. Yesterday

afternoon Mrs James, Mrs Parkinson, Miss

Johnston and Mr Dodhy travelled to Lake

Cargelligo Central School for training in the

Scratch program. Scratch is a free

programming language and online

community. With Scratch, you can program

your own interactive stories, games, and

animations. Scratch helps young people learn

to think creatively, reason systematically, and

work collaboratively — essential skills for life

in the 21st century. Our students will be

experimenting with Scratch in the classroom

in the near future.

UCS YUM are powering on with their gardens

and their food delivery service. It won’t be long

and they’ll have an abundance of tomatoes

from their tomato patch. Thank you to those

community members who have been pre-

ordering their vegetables each week as it

makes deliveries more efficient. Keep an eye

out in the newsletter for what’s available.

Notes were sent home last week to our Year 6

students regarding our Bring Your Own Device

(BYOD) program. Please return notes by

Monday 12 November so arrangements can be

made to order the devices needed. There is no

pressure to purchase the device that the school

has chosen. Mr Dodhy has included a list of

requirements if you wish to purchase your

own.

Last Friday our Year 9/10 students were

involved in the F1 project at Condobolin High

as part of STEM. Congratulations to all of our

students for the hard work, time and effort

they put into their project, which really

showed on the day. Thank you also to Mr

Dodhy and Mrs Jackson for leading the project

at UCS.

Until next week!

Typing Tournament

UCS has subscribed to Typing Tournament

Online.

This website enables both home and school users

to access this highly effective typing tutor.

Students from 3-6 have been given their

Username and Password to login to Typing

Tournament from home.

Home access to Typing Tournament makes it

easy for parents to support this learning by

encouraging your child to login and ensuring that

they are using all 10 fingers on the correct keys.

The more regularly this is done, the faster the

learning. Goodluck!

Scholastic Book Club have a new way for parents to order and pay on-line for Scholastic book club orders, if they choose to. LOOP allows orders and payment (made by credit card) at home, without

handing in the order form to school. Deliveries to the school remain the same and distributed to students. If you prefer to continue sending in your order form to school office/library like before,

then that is OK too. Either way UCS Library benefits from the scholastic rewards incurred with all purchases. If you

wish to try LOOP with the next issue, follow the steps below. Thank you for your continued support.

‘GOT IT!’ PROGRAM

On Thursday 26th October students had a visit from John Dean, Lauren Brown and Rebecca McDonell who introduced our school to the ‘GOT IT!’ Program. Students from K-Year 4 listened to a story about being considerate of others and then enjoyed engaging in activities about mental health that promoted teamwork and a positive self image. Primary staff also had the opportunity to participate in an information session after school. The ‘GOT IT!’ Program is an early intervention initiative which aims to reduce the frequency and severity of behaviour problems in young children K to Year 2. This new program is supported by the NSW Ministry of Health and the NSW Department of Education.

YEAR 7/8 GEOGRAPHY FIELD TRIP TO LAKE COWAL

Year 7/8 Geography visited Lake Cowal on Wednesday 1st November, to investigate the area and more importantly the water; how it gets there, what it brings with it and what it is used for. They looked at the plants and animals that rely on the lake for survival, litter and rubbish, water and soil health and the human impact on the Lake Cowal area. Students used geographical skills and equipment to identify the location, measure climatic conditions, assess the soil and water, observe and investigate the management of the human impact on the plants and animals in the area. The students tested the turbidity, temperature and pH of the water in Lake Cowal before enjoying a spot of 'fishing' for waterbugs with dipnets and then identifying the bugs. These factors contributed to the assessment of the overall health of the water in the Lake. The soil was also tested for pH and classified by the texture in different areas. The 'Litter and Rubbish' component of the task was a real eye opener for the students. They found the usual flood rubbish of plastic bags, bottles, tin cans, rusted chicken wire, ringlock and broken machinery parts and lots of sticks and leaf rubble. The amount of very old broken bits of coloured glass, bottles and crockery made them come to the realisation that some rubbish lasts a very, very long time in our environment. Discussions then occurred about recycling and reusing things multiple times and what were the most appropriate methods of disposal/recycling products to help our environment. It was a great learning experience in a local environment. Sally Duncan (Lake Cowal Conservation Centre.)

On the day students were judged on their car and how it was engineered. We had an ex-student of Condobolin High School who made it to the National finals of the F1 in Schools competition and local engineer, Joe Kiss judge the students on the engineering of their cars. Mr Timothy Small and Mr Patrick Fung of Tullibigeal Central School also judged the students on their pit displays and portfolios. A big thank you to the judges for volunteering their time and expertise. To complete the project students were exposed to industry standard software, including MS Office 365, CREO CAD Software, Adobe Suite and machinery including 3D printers, CNC routers and laser cutters. Our students were excellent ambassadors for Ungarie Central School with Teleportation Engineering (Jared, Jack, Angus, Josh and Braden) winning the fastest car on the day with a time of 1.164 seconds. Radiation Racin (Seth, Kayla, Johann and Lilyarna) also won the knockout racing with some excellent reaction times from Johann. We are still waiting for the results to be collated before we know which team are the official overall winner of the day. Mr Dodhy

On Friday November 3rd, Year 9/10 STEM travelled to Condobolin High School to compete in the LAP STEM class race day. Students from Lake Cargelligo, Condobolin and Ungarie have been working throughout the year to develop a race car, pit display, portfolio and marketing for their team. Friday’s race day was the culmination of all their hard work and their final assessment for the project.
