GARAGE & YARD SALES

BOTTLED WATER VERSUS TAP WATER – WHICH IS BETTER?

You might be surprised to learn that in most cases, there is no difference. Some people think bottled water is safer than tap water, but Canadian quality standards are similar for bottled and municipal water (this includes tap water).

• Municipal dr inking water systems are routinely inspected to ensure that the chemical and microbiological quality meets provincial standards. All water that meets or exceeds these standards is considered safe.

• Bottled water labelled as ‘mineral’ or ‘spring’ water comes from underground water sources. Other types of bottled water may be made from public water sources, including tap water and well water. No matter where it comes from, bottled water sold in Canada is inspected and treated during manufacturing to remove harmful microorganisms, but it is not sterilized.

Individuals who get their water from a well should note that Health Canada recommends having their water tested regularly to ensure it is safe from bacteria or chemical contamination. It should also be tested if there is any change to the water’s clarity, color, smell or taste.

It is best to use water from the cold water tap for drinking and cooking. Water from the hot water tap may contain more lead and other non-biological contaminants because hot water can dissolve or leach them more readily.
