Is Your Portfolio Telling You to Make a Change? The past nine years have beenextraordinary for the stock market. FromMarch 2009 to the end of 2017, theStandard & Poor’s 500 Index, abenchmark of market performance, roseclose to 300 percent. In 2017 alone, theindex gained more than 21 percent. If youare an investor who has benefited fromthe extended bull market in stocks, youmight think there’s no reason to rebalanceyour portfolio. However, certaininvestments or sectors you own may haveprospered in recent years, possiblyaffecting the level of risk you have in themarket. With market performance where itis, it may make sense to review yourportfolio and determine if changes areappropriate.

The importance of rebalancingRebalancing is a process of shiftingassets in your portfolio back to youroriginal allocation to more suitably reflectyour investment objectives and risk profile.Because the markets move inunpredictable cycles, it’s important toremember that the types of returns manyinvestors saw in 2017 won’t necessarilybe repeated in the next few years. Whilestocks have historically moved higher overtime, there are periods when they eitherperform below average or give back someof the gains they previously achieved. These market swings mean an investormay have to make adjustments to theirportfolio mix over time. Keep in mind thatrebalancing does not guarantee a profit orprotect against a loss.

As a simplified hypothetical example, assume an investor’s portfolio wasestablished with a mix of 60 percentstocks and 40 percent bonds. This mixwould be determined based on theinvestor’s risk tolerance and goals. Afterthe market’s recent winning streak, stocksmay now represent 70 percent of theportfolio. This could be considered an“overweight” position compared to theinvestor’s designated allocation. If stocksexperience a correction, the “overweight”position in equities could work against theinvestor. It may make sense to reduce thestock position back to its original allocationof 60 percent, and move 10 percent of theportfolio back into bonds. In this way, theportfolio would more accurately representsthe investor’s risk profile.

When to shift assetsThere are many market or personalevents that may cause investors torebalance their portfolios. While thefollowing rules of thumb may give you anidea of when to consider reallocating yourinvestments, remember that the right timeand frequency is different for eachinvestor. Consider reallocating: • When one asset class is a certainpercentage higher or lower than itsoriginal representation in your portfolio.Your investments will swing up and downday-to-day and week-to-week, so work

with your financial advisor to establish abenchmark for when volatility may triggera change in your investment makeup. • At a set timeframe, such as quarterly, biannually or annually. Reviewing on aregular schedule may help you avoidmaking an emotional decision duringtimes of market volatility. • When you recognize a broad, persistenttrend in the markets. For example, upwardtrends in emerging markets’ performanceor rising interest rates in the U.S. couldaffect your portfolio or present aninvesting opportunity based on your goals. • Because of changes in your own life.Major life events, such as marriage, divorce, the birth of a child or grandchild,or deciding on a retirement date, mayrequire you to adjust your investments sothey align with your new priorities. Forexample, if you decided to retire early youmay want to reduce your exposure to riskin case the markets dip before yourretirement date. This could mean shiftinga portion of your portfolio into moreconservative investments.

Be aware of tax ramificationsEven if you hold investments in a varietyof accounts, consider assessing all of yourholdings as one portfolio to determine ifyou need to rebalance your assets. Beaware that if you sell positions in taxableaccounts, you may incur taxable gains. Ifyou make changes within atax-advantaged account (such as IRAs ora workplace retirement plan), you may beable to avoid any current tax implicationsfrom the rebalancing process.

Even if your portfolio is making progresstoward your goals, it’s important not tokeep your investments on autopilot. Yourasset allocation can have a major impacton your ability to reach your future goals,so it’s worth ensuring your mix remains ontrack. Consult with your financial advisorand tax advisor before you make anydecisions about your investment strategy.

Under the 2017 Tax Cuts and JobsAct, “regular” corporations (alsoknown as C-corporations) will see adramatic change in their Federal taxrates. C-corporations with less than$50,000 of taxable income will see atax increase from 15% to 21%.Federal tax rates for C-corporationswith taxable income in excess of$50,000 will now be taxed at a flatrate of 21% on their entire taxableincome, starting in 2018. This isreduced from graduated tax rates of25% - 35% on taxable income inexcess of $50,000. Most smallbusinesses are typically notC-corporations; they are formed assole proprietorships, partnerships, orS corporations (also known aspass-through entities), as the incomefrom the entity “passes through” tothe individual owner and is taxed atthe individual owner’s tax rate. Smallbusiness owners are now inquiringabout whether they should changetheir pass-through entity into aC-corporation, as a result in the new

21% flat corporation tax rate.

The 2017 Tax Act is quite complex, and needs to be looked at carefully.First of all, the top individual tax ratehas been reduced from 39.6% to37%. Secondly and more important, most pass-through entities areentitled to a new 20% deduction on“qualified business income” frompass-through entities. This willreduce the effective top individual taxrate from 37% to 29.6%. There arelimitations on this deduction for highincome individuals. Considerationmust be given to the businessowner’s intent on receivingdistributions of income out of thebusiness. Owners of C-corporationswill have to pay tax at their individualtax rate, in addition to the tax thatwas already paid by the corporation.Where as distributions from apass-through entity to an owner areonly taxes once.

With the many complexities of the

2017 Tax Cut and Jobs Act, you willneed professional advice as to theproper choice of business entity for2018 and beyond. In 1832, George Muller arrived inBristol, England to take charge of asmall church called Bathesda Chapelwhere he served for 64 years until hisdeath in 1896. Early in his work atBathesda, Muller was struck by theoverwhelming number of orphans whoroamed the streets with nowhere to gofor food and shelter. In this era of Britain’s IndustrialRevolution, children as young asseven years old were forced to work indangerous factories in horribleconditions. It was not uncommon fororphans to lose their lives in thisstate-sponsored child laborenvironment. Some of the boys andgirls were forced to work as chimneysweeps in the most deplorableconditions. They were a type ofindentured servant, bought by thechimney sweep master from financiallypoor parents. According to informationgathered from various chimney sweepwebsites, these young chimneysweeps were to climb up, inside thechimney, brushing the flue as theywent, and they weren’t done until theirheads poked out of the chimney top.Due to their fear, these children wereoften reluctant to climb up thechimney. In order to motivate them, many masters would force the child upthe flue and then light a fire. Since thechild couldn’t come down, they had nochoice but to climb up the flue. If achild happened to die while inside thechimney, another child was sent upthe flue to help remove the deceasedchild.Moved by what he saw, George Mullerfelt called to make a difference in thelives of the many ragged childrenrunning wild in the streets destined forslavery and forced labor. At a publicmeeting on December 9, 1835, Mullercommunicated his vision to hiscongregation about starting anorphanage. On April 11, 1836, Mulleropened the doors of his firstorphanage where he took in 26children. Seven months later, onNovember 28, 1836, the secondorphanage opened. In September of1837, a third orphanage was opened.Over the years, more than 10,000orphans were housed in theorphanage started by Muller. Not onlydid Muller provide food and shelter, healso provided an education to over120,000 children through the 117schools he established. He wasactually accused of raising the poorabove their natural station in life. At his

funeral in 1896, the streets were linedwith multiple thousands of people, some having climbed trees lining thefuneral procession, attempting to getone last glimpse at the man who caredenough to make a difference. The Power of PurposePeople and teams need purpose. They not only need to ask the questionbut need to have an answer for, “whydo we exist?” An NFL team coming outof training camp and into the regularseason lacking purpose will lack thepassion and direction to reach thegame of games, the Super Bowl.Studies show that people withoutpurpose are vulnerable to boredom, anxiety and depression. Withoutpurpose, individuals will drift aimlesslythrough life and through theirprofessional careers. When peoplehave purpose, they have focus, direction, desire, aspiration, resolve, determination, tenacity and a will toachieve. They are not deterred bysetbacks, delays, or impediments.Fredrick Nietzsche, the Germanphilosopher said, “He who has a why,can endure any how.” George Mullerhad a “why.” His purpose was to liftorphan children out of a life of neglectand slave labor by providing them withfood, shelter, education, and anunderstanding of their purpose in life. The Power of PassionPassion is the fuel in the engine ofpurpose. Merriam-Webster Dictionarydefines passion as, “a strong feeling ofenthusiasm or excitement forsomething or about doing something.”Author Michael Nolan wrote, “There

are many things in life that will catchyour eye, but only a few that will catchyour heart, pursue these.” Leaderscan tap into the passion of their teamsby casting vision. Helping others tosee the end result of something that’syet to be accomplished is the key togood vision casting. When GeorgeMuller shared his vision for starting anorphanage, he had two schillings in hispocket and never asked a person for asingle donation, yet throughout hisyears in ministry work, he raised whatis considered to be over $70 million intoday’s dollars. He cast a compellingvision for what could be and then gotto work to make it happen. The Power of PeopleWhen people are motivated by acompelling vision, there’s no stoppinggreat things from happening. It’s beensaid that teamwork makes the dreamwork. The power of people toaccomplish goals and objectives cannever be overlooked. Michael Jordansaid, “Talent wins games, teamworkand intelligence win championships.”As leaders in industry and in ourcommunities, may we be alerted to theneeds of others and harness thepower of purpose, passion and peopleto meet those needs.
