Grand Knights Message
Brother Knights and families,
As I have said in all my past
messages, I hope all is well
with you and yours. As we
approach the summer
months, we get closer to
being able to meet in person
under safe conditions.
Hopefully, we can meet
outside if we cannot meet
inside. I will check on this and
keep you all informed.
If you have not paid your
dues for the 2021, I would
encourage you to do what is
feasible for you to do. We
continue to use our funds to
pay for insurance on the hall,
mortgage payments on the
hall, filling in on pantry
shortages, etc. We continue
to perform for the parish and
our community even though
we are not physically
meeting. Your assistance
would be greatly
appreciated.
We have an election for
officers for the new
Columbian year 2021-2022.
The slate of officers proposed
are the same as this past year
(listed on the left column).
Please read over the
candidates and submit your
vote to either Brother George
or myself. We need to have
all votes submitted by June
1,2021. Thank you for your
input.
We also need to be thinking
of some type of fund raising
that we might be able to do
in the summer/fall. We need
to replenish the treasury.
Several years ago, we
founded a Squires Council for
young men from age 10-18. I
would like to look into reviving
this group. Anyone interested
in helping with this group
please let me know. I will assist
in getting group reformed
and growing before turning
over the reins. We have all the
information we need in our
files. So, if you can begin
asking around the parish
community and, in your
families, if we can find at least
12 young men who are
interested in following the
Knights. This is a great training
ground to build up our youth,
our council, our parish, and
our community and possible
religious calling.
We are always looking for a
few good men. If you know
someone, who you feel would
make a good Knight invite
them to join the Knights,
especially in this year of St.
Joseph and with our beatified
founder Father Michael
McGivney.

We received a postcard from
Sister Paulea thanking the
Knights for all the cards and
prayers. She is very grateful
and she is always praying for
us also. She is in better health
and says she is learning how
to walk again.
We also received a letter
from our Pastor Fr. Mike
dated March 19, 2021
“I want to thank you for your
continuous generosity and
commitment to our Parish.
We have received the

Insurance Field Agents Message
Join the
Guild…...
Are you a
Member?
Since our founding in 1882, the primary mission of the
Knights of Columbus has been to protect families from the
financial ruin caused by the death of the breadwinner. In
the beginning, Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney and
his fellow Knights “passed the hat” to benefit widows and
orphans. From that humble start, the Order has grown to
include top-rated life insurance, long-term care insurance
and retirement products. With more than $92 billion of
insurance in force and a full-time field force of more than
1,400 serving our members and their families, we are
proudly fulfilling Blessed Fr. McGivney’s vision.
The best way to learn about our products is by arranging a
visit with your local field agent. Your agent can custom
design an insurance program to meet your current needs, help
you plan for the future or simply explain the many fraternal
benefits that come with membership.

Father McGivney founded the

March 2008, when he was
declared a Venerable Servant
of God by Pope Benedict XVI.
On May 26, 2020, Father
McGivney took another step
toward sainthood when Pope
Francis approved the
promulgation of a decree
recognizing a miracle attributed
to his intercession. With the
approval of this miracle, he was
beatified on Oct. 31, 2020, with
the title of Blessed.
Another miracle through his
intercession is needed for him to
be canonized as a saint.

Cinco De Mayo History
Happy Mother’s Day!
Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of
May, is a holiday that
celebrates the date of the
Mexican army’s May 5, 1862
victory over France at the
Battle of Puebla during the
Franco-Mexican War. The
day, which falls on
Wednesday, May 5 in 2021, is
also known as Battle of
Puebla Day. While it is a
relatively minor holiday in
Mexico, in the United States,
Cinco de Mayo has evolved
into a commemoration of
Mexican culture and
heritage, particularly in areas
with large Mexican-American
populations.
Cinco de Mayo is not
Mexican Independence Day,
a popular misconception.
Instead, it commemorates a
single battle. In 1861, Benito
Juárez—a lawyer and
member of the Indigenous
Zapotec tribe—was elected
president of Mexico. At the
time, the country was in
financial ruin after years of
internal strife, and the new
president was forced to
default on debt payments to
European governments.
Battle of Puebla (1862).
In response, France, Britain
and Spain sent naval forces
to Veracruz, Mexico,
demanding repayment.
Britain and Spain negotiated
with Mexico and withdrew
their forces. France, however,
ruled by Napoleon III,
decided to use the
opportunity to carve an
empire out of Mexican
territory. Late in 1861, a well-
armed French fleet stormed
Veracruz, landing a large
force of troops and driving
President Juárez and his
government into retreat.
Mother’s Day is a holiday
honoring motherhood that is
observed in different forms
throughout the world. In the
United States, Mother’s Day
2021 will occur on Sunday,
May 9. The American
incarnation of Mother’s Day
was created by Anna Jarvis
in 1908 and became an
official U.S. holiday in 1914.
Jarvis would later denounce
the holiday’s
commercialization and spent
the latter part of her life trying
to remove it from the
calendar. While dates and
celebrations vary, Mother’s
Day traditionally involves
presenting moms with
flowers, cards and other gifts.
Celebrations of mothers and
motherhood can be traced
back to the ancient Greeks
and Romans, who held festivals
in honor of the mother
goddesses Rhea and Cybele,
but the clearest modern
precedent for Mother’s Day is
the early Christian festival
known as “Mothering Sunday.”
Once a major tradition in the
United Kingdom and parts of
Europe, this celebration fell on
the fourth Sunday in Lent and
was originally seen as a time
when the faithful would return
to their “mother church”—the
main church in the vicinity of
their home—for a special
service.
Over time the Mothering
Sunday tradition shifted into a
more secular holiday, and
children would present their
mothers with flowers and
other tokens of appreciation.
This custom eventually faded
in popularity before merging
with the American Mother’s
Day in the 1930s and 1940s.
Did you know? More phone
calls are made on Mother’s
Day than any other day of
the year. These holiday chats
with Mom often cause phone
traffic to spike by as much as
37 percent.

Memorial Day is an American
holiday, observed on the last
Monday of May, honoring
the men and women who
died while serving in the U.S.
military. Memorial Day 2021
will occur on Monday, May
31.
Originally known as
Decoration Day, it originated
in the years following the Civil
War and became an official
federal holiday in 1971. Many
Americans observe Memorial
Day by visiting cemeteries or
memorials, holding family
gatherings and participating
in parades. Unofficially, it
marks the beginning of the
summer season.
Memorial Day, as
Decoration Day gradually
came to be known, originally
honored only those lost while
fighting in the Civil War. But
during World War I the
United States found itself
embroiled in another major
conflict, and the holiday
evolved to commemorate
American military personnel
who died in all wars,
including World War II, The
Vietnam War, The Korean
War and the wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan.
For decades, Memorial Day
continued to be observed
on May 30, the date Logan
had selected for the first
Decoration Day. But in 1968
Congress passed the Uniform
Monday Holiday Act, which
established Memorial Day as
the last Monday in May in
order to create a three-day
weekend for federal
employees; the change went
into effect in 1971. The same
law also declared Memorial
Day a federal holiday.
Did you know? Each year on
Memorial Day a national
moment of remembrance
takes place at 3:00 p.m. local
time.

Our Principles
All the good works we do are
informed by our four core
principles:
Charity – Our Catholic faith
teaches us to “Love thy
neighbor as thyself.” Members
of the Knights of Columbus
show love for their neighbors by
conducting food drives and
donating the food to local soup
kitchens and food pantries,
by volunteering at Special
Olympics, and by supporting,
both spiritually and materially,
mothers who choose life for
their babies. Knights recognize
that our mission, and our faith in
God, compels us to action.
There is no better way to
experience love and
compassion than by helping
those in need, a call we answer
every day.
Unity – None of us is as good as
all of us. Members of the
Knights of Columbus all know
that – together – we can
accomplish far more than any
of us could individually. So, we
stick together…we support
one another. That doesn’t
mean that we always agree or
that there is never a difference
of opinion. It does mean that –
as a Knight of Columbus – you
can count on the support and
encouragement of your
brother Knights as you work to
make life better in your parish
and community.
Fraternity – Blessed Michael J.
McGivney founded the Knights
of Columbus, in large part, to
provide assistance to the
widows and children left
behind when the family
breadwinner died – often
prematurely. The Order’s top-
rated insurance
program continues to do this
today, as do the good works
of individual Knights, who gave
more than 75.6 million service
hours in 2017, illustrating how
Catholics serve each other in
fraternity and mercy.
Patriotism – Members of the
Knights of Columbus, be they
Americans, Canadians,
Mexicans, Cubans, Filipinos,
Poles, or Dominicans, are
patriotic citizens. We are proud
of our devotion to God and
country, and believe in
standing up for both. Whether
it’s in public or private, the
Knights remind the world that
Catholics support their nations
and are amongst the greatest
citizens. Join Us!
