OUR MISSION Building Strong Relationships in Christ,

And Making Him Known to All.

From the Pastor. . .

Did you know: The circle is a symbol for God, as well as for

eternity, due to its lack of a beginning or an end. It also reminds

us how the church year (not unlike the secular calendar) flows

from season to season and moves smoothly from Christ the King

Sunday (the culmination of the liturgical calendar) to the First

Sunday of Advent (a new beginning). Indeed, the One who rules

all is the same One whose first and final comings we anticipate

anew during Advent.—Published in November 2014 (The Newsletter Newsletter)

Advent

Advent means “arrival”.

This time of year is filled with

comings and goings: vacations,

parties, shopping, events with

family and friends. In the midst

of the busyness of getting ready for Christmas, it’s

easy to miss the reason for the season. God is

coming! Christ’s advent is near!

In the midst of our busy preparations for the

celebration of Jesus’ birth in ancient Bethlehem,

Christ arrives in our homes and lives today. Do we

notice his presence? The devil loves to get us so

busy decorating, preparing food, cleaning and

shopping in preparation for Christmas that we

actually miss the coming of Christ. Hurt feelings,

anger, impatience, injured egos—our busyness

creates a long list of things that can blind us to the

birth. During this season we pause in worship to

consider how our lives are shaped by the advent of

our Lord Jesus: his humble birth and his coming

return. Christ will come whether we notice or not.

How will is Advent affect you this year? What can help you grow deeper in your relationship with Christ today?

Join us in worship as we celebrate the arrival of our

Lord into our lives and hearts!

Pastor Kurt

Special Announcements

Gift for Pastor Anenson. On Saturday, November 19, we presented a plaque to Pastor

Anenson in honor of his 34 years of ministry at Immanuel.

In addition to the individual gifts that people made, the Church Council also gave the Anensons

$7500 to use for travel or whatever they wish.

Thank you to everyone who helped honor the Anensons as they move

to Ankeny!

Immanuel Transition Team Update

The Transition Team is off and running! Well, maybe more accurate is to say that we are moving

forward! The Team has met together now 3 separate times in November, and we have used these

meetings to discuss our plans and process for accomplishing this important charge that the Church

Council has given us. As you know, at the direction of the Council the Deacons assembled this

Transition Team and charged us to listen to you as members of the congregation, to listen to the

Holy Spirit, to assess the strengths of and opportunities for Immanuel, to determine the missions

of which God is calling us and directing us, and to bring back to the Council recommendations for

attaining those callings. A very important mission for this Transition Team, indeed!

And we have also used these times together for getting to know each Team member’s spiritual

story and for getting to know each other better. The Deacons recruited wonderful individuals to

this Transition Team – Tammy Hansen, Justin Hanson, Cathy Isebrand, Jillian Lykins and Patty

Rathmacher – and it is great to work with each of them as a Team, together to help discern our

next steps as a congregation!

The Transition Team will kick off 2017 by participating in a Transition Team/Call Committee

day-long workshop on Saturday, January 7, 2017 in Clear Lake, conducted by Pastor Steve Lien,

LCMC Coordinator for Pastoral Ministry. We will then continue this journey as a Team and

more importantly as the Immanuel congregation, looking to you and to God’s Word to guide us

as we assess who we are, who we want to be, and where we go forward as the Immanuel family!

Joel Danielson

Dear Immanuel Congregation,

We continue to be blessed by you. Your encouragement and generosity

have touched our lives. We are overwhelmed by the gift of a

plaque and the generous checks we received from the congregation. Our heartfelt gratitude

goes out to each of you.

We trust that you will have a blessed Thanksgiving and Christmas season.

A Note from Stephen Ministers The joy of Christmas can turn into a time of painful loneliness and emptiness for those who have suffered a loss or who are going through a difficult time. But help is available. Our Stephen Ministers are ready to provide confidential, one-to-one Christian care. They will listen, care, encourage, pray with and for you, and support you through the holidays and as long as your need persists. If you or someone you know is hurting, find out more about Stephen Ministry by talking with one of our Stephen Leaders: Pastor Kurt or Gayle Tate. Our Stephen Ministers are there to care!

Stephen Minister’s monthly meeting is Monday, December 19th 5:30 P.M. in the

Cornerstone Room.

Year-End Giving . Please remember the needs of the various ministries of our congregation. Our Current & Mission fund is in particular need at this time.

Daily Texts 2017 Dwelling in God’s word each day

For the last few years, we have ordered copies of the Daily Texts for people who want a bite-sized word from Scripture to shape each day of the year. The Daily Texts is a unique devotional book used by millions of people around the world in over 50 languages. It is the oldest continuously published devotional book in the world. It provides two Bible verses for each day - one from the Old Testament and one from the New Testament. These are followed by a prayer based on Martin Luther's prayer pattern, the T.R.I.P., written by a different person each month. Scripture readings to read through the Bible in one year are also provided. We will be ordering 2017 Daily Texts at a group rate of just $7.00 a copy.

If you would like copies for yourself or as gifts, sign up in the narthex, or contact the church office at 733-4972 or [email protected] by Sunday, Dec. 1 1th. May God bless our families, congregation, and community as we spend time in His Word each day!

Meal Train If you know any friends or family in need of meals following births, deaths, illnesses, or surgeries, please contact Sarah Jensen ([email protected]) or the church office. Sarah will help organize the providing of meals using the Meal Train website and will notify the congregation allowing you to sign up for times to provide meals for those in their time of need. Thank you!

Merry Christmas! Possible Daycare Ministry Our Trustees have formed an exploration team to look into the possibility of partnering with local daycare provider Mariah Duszynski to create a Christian daycare center here at Immanuel. Mariah, Little Flock, and other Story City daycare providers have lengthy waiting lists, so there seems to be a great need for it in our community. The daycare exploration team is considering a wide variety of questions and issues that would need to be answered to make this opportunity possible. If you have questions about it, please contact one of the team members: John Arthur, Grant & Laura Severson, Jeff Baker, or Alaina Christian.

The Christmas season is a favorite time of year in

the library because we have so many wonderful books to offer our readers. Take time to be blessed by stopping in to see what we have.

Cindy Woodsmall has written a new “Romance from the Heart of Amish Country” called The Dawn of Christmas. Sadie and Levi have both seen and experienced the disastrous effects of love gone wrong and have decided they want nothing to do with married life. They devise a plan to keep their meddlesome families satisfied while maintaining their own independence, but as Christmas approaches, the charade they are playing begins to feel too real for their own comfort. As the walls of bitterness begin to crumble, Levi and Sadie have to learn to trust each other as they begin to imagine a future together.

We also have many beautiful Christmas stories for children. Three of our newest are:

We Believe in Christmas, by Karen Kinsgbury. A story told in pictures and verse of a family finding the true meaning of Christmas as they prepare for and participate in the Christmas pageant at their church.

Little Angel by Geraldine McCaughrean. Share the adventures of a young shepherd boy with a big responsibility and a little angel with damaged wings have as they help each other face their fears and find the baby Jesus.

The Littlest Christmas Star by Brandi Dougherty. Max was disappointed when he only got a small part in the Christmas play. Read to find out how he becomes a big star!

Our Christmas books are on display on the tops of the bookshelves and in the children’s book rack. We have a variety of seasonal devotions, meditations, poetry, historical fiction, Amish, prairie and modern day stories, and many beautiful retellings of the nativity. Put the “holy” back in your holiday by spending some time with the special Christmas offerings available in the library.

Church Library Read. Study. Learn.

Let it shine Whatever else be lost among the years, Let us keep Christmas still a shining thing. Whatever doubts assail us, or what fears, Let us hold close one day, remembering Its poignant meaning for the hearts of men. Let us get back our childlike faith again.

“For to us a child is born...”

A Christmas Prayer Dear Lord, in this holy Christmas season may we

draw nearer to you. How wise you were to reveal

yourself in the presence of a little baby, the Christ

child. You demonstrated the power and the

depth of your love for each of us. Thank you for

showing us that Christmas begins in the heart,

and for the love that it teaches. Help us now to

keep the light of the Christmas message burning

brightly all year through. In Jesus' name, we pray.

Amen.

called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
