Introduction

Definition of the tsunami

A tsunami is a series of water waves generated by a disturbance in the ocean. Earthquakes account for about 90% of all tsunamis.

About the tsunami

tsunami : Japanese word with the English translation,

“ 津波 : harbor wave.”

In 1946, an earthquake occurred at Unimak Is., AK. A city in Hawaii was devastated by the tsunami which occurred at Unimak Is., AK. The wave was called the tsunami by a Japanese at the first time. PTWC * was established at Ewa Beach, Hawaii in 1949 adopt international terminology at ICSU* in 1963

Conclusion

Nature, as we have learned from the tsunami, has its own timetable. Unless we learn how to respect it, we will all miss the boat.

No one pretends that we can prevent or alter the forces of nature. Rather, we have to learn to cope with them. There are now calls for improved tsunami early warning systems
