Court order for the abandonment of the Terre Haute-Clinton and Terre Haute-Sulllvan lines of the Terre Haute, Indianapolis & East- ern Traction Company was an- nounced vsday following its Issu- ance lste Tuesday by Superior Judge Russell Ryan. The order, which awaits approval of the public service commission, was Issued on a petition filed m superior court five by Elmer W. Stout, receiver for the traction company Ceasing operation of the lines follows closely the abandonment of ihe Indianapolis-Richmond inter- urban line belonging to the same company. Thte order now is await- ing action of the public service commission. Stout was appointed receiver for the traction company April 21, 1930, and, since that time, has been oper- ating the lines at a loss, the peti- tion stated According to Stout’s statement, the Sullivan line's operating deficit from Jan. 1. 1930. to Jan. 1, 1931, was $50,092.73. The Terre Haute- Clinton division showed a deficit of $43,349.96. Abandonment of the two lines is expected to raise much protest among citizens in eastern Indiana, it- is said. RAZZBERRY FAREWELL GIVEN FOR TOURISTS Walter George Hilgemeier Leave for Europe. George A Hilgemeier, president of the F. Hilgemeier & Brother, Inc., pork packers, and Waller Myers, speaker of the 1931 house of representatives, were given a rous- ing send-off when they left Tues- day night for New York cn route to Europe. Wreaths, not flowers, but of dilapidated wieners, and bouquets of thistles, nettles and weeds were the farewell gifts to the voyagers from the Order of Jesters which in- cluded Harry Dunn, county auditor; George Snider, president of the county commisisoners; Dow W. Vorhies, commissioner; W. H. Smith, assistant collector of in- ternal revenue, and a score of friends and relatives. Myers and Hilgemeier will make a five weeks trip through England, Prance, Germany and Austria. DEATH VERDICTS GIVEN By r nih il Pn ax SCOTTSBORO. Ala., April B. The first two Negroes of nine charged with assaulting two white girls, stood convicted today, the jury recommending the death sentence, after only fifty minutes deliberation. Clarence Norris, 19, and Charles Weems, 20, both of Atlanta, were the first of the group convicted. Trial of Hey wood Patterson began today, as five national guard com- panies continued to protect the de- fendants against possible mob violence. of the Terre Haute-Clinton andTerre Haute-Sulllvan lines of theTerre Haute, Indianapolis & East-ern Traction Company was an-nounced vsday following its Issu-ance lste Tuesday by SuperiorJudge Russell Ryan.

The order, which awaits approvalof the public service commission,was Issued on a petition filed msuperior court five by Elmer W.Stout, receiver for the tractioncompany

Ceasing operation of the linesfollows closely the abandonment ofihe Indianapolis-Richmond inter-urban line belonging to the samecompany. Thte order now is await-ing action of the public servicecommission.

Stout was appointed receiver forthe traction company April 21, 1930,and, since that time, has been oper-ating the lines at a loss, the peti-tion stated

According to Stout’s statement,the Sullivan line's operating deficitfrom Jan. 1. 1930. to Jan. 1, 1931,was $50,092.73. The Terre Haute-Clinton division showed a deficit of$43,349.96.

Abandonment of the two lines isexpected to raise much protestamong citizens in eastern Indiana,it- is said.
