RADIOWLEE's Bob Paiva Offers TenQuestions For Your Consideration

(Editor's Note: The followingarticle comes from Bob Paiva,Program Director of WLE E -Richmond ).

Every Monday morning prior tohis leaving NationwideCommunications, Jack Thayersent out a "Monday MorningMemo" to our stations with bits ofinformation on what's happeningin our company. A recent MMMcontained some interesting itemsthat I thought would provide us allwith an opportunity to re-evaluateourselves and our industry. I'dlike to take this opportunity topass them along.

There are 11 questions involvedwhich were part of aninstitutional ad, entitled: "TENQUESTIONS FOR TOMORROWSTOP INSURANCEEXECUTIVES" sponsored byNATIONWIDE INSURANCE,and prepared by Martha Sheeranof our Public RelationsDepartment. To use Jack's wordsthe "message is loud and clear"and can apply with equalmeaning to all of us in the radio orrecords business. What's Your Score?

1. Is professionalism therecognized hallmark of ourbusiness?

2. Are the needs of people ourprimary concern?

3. Do we truly believe that

business has a socialresponsibility?

4. Do we anticipate what peopleare going to want from us?

5. Do we adapt readily tochanging times?

6. Do we contribute ourmanpower, money and prestigesufficiently to social concerns?

7. Are we actually "equalopportunity" employers?

8. Are we offering the kind oftraining that will prepare today'syoung employees to becometomorrow's top managment?

9. Have we the vision toperceive and prepare for theleadership role our industry canassume in a fast changingsociety?

10. Have we the wisdom andthe courage to criticizeourselves?

EXTRA QUESTION: Can wehonestly say "yes" to all ten? Ifnot, why not? . . and WHEN?

I think that we can findmeaningful applications of oursocial responsibilities, our peopleresponsibilities, our professionalresponsibilities and ourleadership responsibilities in boththe radio and records business.

Radio, by its charge, Issupposed to be concerned with itsresponsibility to the public but I

think In ourresponsibility to our own people.

In commemoration of Salinas, California's 100th birthday, the staff ofKDON donned the dress of a century ago for this poster which is beingawarded to listeners. Bottom row from left: Christopher Lance, PD

Johnny Morgan, T.N. Tanaka. Second row: B. David Painter, PaulMcNeal, Byron Lawrence, and Brian Adams.

Few radio companies have anykind of program of personeldevelopment and promotion. Infact our business has --beenmarked by fear of competitionand attempts to stifle aggressiveyoung people. I'm proud to saythat Nationwide is makingserious attempts to reverse thattrend.

Records has shown atremendous capacity fordeveloping people. The rapidgrowth of professionals like StevePopovitch to Vice Presidencieshas been an inspiration to anyyoung person coming into thebusiness. It has, however, beenthe province of very fewcompanies to recognize andexecute a social responsibility inthe production of recordedproduct. Some companies withthe financial capacity to do sohave still failed to expand theboundaries of their productbeyond making pop records intothe areas of classics, spoken wordand the almost untouched area ofeducational material.

What this means is that we bothhave before us tremendousopportunities to develop andexpand our horizons.

We have an opportunity todayto look seriously at the questionsI've offered for consideration, toponder the answers and inparticular to have the "wisdomand the courage to criticizeourselves."

KHJ-Los Angeles: GerryPeterson picked up on the suddencancellation of the scheduled"California Jam West," whichwas to feature Crosby, Stills,Nash, 8, Young, The Beach Boys, and the Band. KHJ immediatelypromoted an on -the -air"California Music Festival"featuring the music of all theartists scheduled for the show, now set for September 21.

Y -I00 MOVE SY100 is moving to new studios;

new address is 2741 N. 29thAvenue, Suite 300, Hollywood,Fiorida 33020.

Steve Warren, PD at WAVZ-NewHaven, passes along this entry inour continuing search for theUltimate T -Shirt. This was thewinner in the station's"Tantalizer" contest.

With 18 minutes of commericals and extended newscoverage, I can only play 8-14 records per hour. What is thebest rotation and how do I make it sound like we play themost music?

The solution does not necessarily deal with playing themost music, but with playing the best music.

A list of priorities should be set for your music hour. Whenyou are limited to 8 records per hour, these should be the bestand most familiar records you could present to youraudience.

During any given week there are 7-10 records which areselling strong in the market. These 7-10 records, along withselected Gold, will present the best musical sound in arestricted situation. When you are able to play more recordsin an hour, the extras on your list will be come the next in linefor airplay. Brand new product, unexposed in the market, falls after the extras in priority.

Remember ... it's not the records that you don't play thatmatter, it's the ones that you play. A familiar sound isalways the most desirable.

How can I improve record service? I send my playlist outfaithfully to all distributors, keep in touch with them, but onsome it just doesn't seem to bring the desired results.

It does seem rather strange that the major market radiostations with 20 -record playlists receive the best recordservice. I have no solution for you in this case. Onlysympathy for record companies who ignore the people mostwilling to expose their new product.

How do I space or block 18 minutes of commercials anhour?

The best way to block 18 minutes of commercials per houris to do 2 minutes -- 9 times, with no more than 2 messagesper stop. This means 9-60-60 commercial breaks. When youdeal with 30 second spots, you then block 60-30 or 30-30 andincrease the number of stops in the hour.

Making your audience try to absorb more than twomessages can be confusing and tedious for them, and willdraw out two minutes into a seemingly endless span ofcommercials.

One of over 100 entries in WKBW-Buffalo's "Herbie Rides Again"contest. The entrants drove their "bugs" in a parade sponsored by thestation and the Western New York VW Dealers Assn. Grand prize forbest decorated VW was a week's vacation in Florida.

FM ROCKRADIOBY MIKE HARRISON

Being an old radio freak, I

always get a kick out of hearingjingle packaged demo tapes, eventhough I don't personally usethem.

Jingleology is a topic of radioopen to question and debate. Some stations have it worked outto a science of dynamics wherebyslow jingles proceed slow songs, fast jingles -- fast songs. Some useone "shotgun" jingle thatproceeds all songs. Some arelong, some are short. Some areplayed often, some sparingly. There are increasingly highnumbers of high energy top 40'swho don't use them at all.

Looking at jingles from aresearch point of view, though, there is very little statisticalevidence from which to drawconclusions as to the effect ofjingles upon listeners and theirsubsequent effect upon creatingan identity for the station that willincrease ratings.

Contracting a jingle company isas precarious as entering a

marriage. You don't know whatyou've got until you live with itday after day. Many station livewith unsuccessful jingle packagesand stick with them because ofthe great amounts of bucks it costthem.

Another interesting techniquebeing explored (especially amongFM rockers) are jingles withoutwords. The use of a constanttransitory musical sound to createidentity. This serves the purposeof using jingle technique toseparate a station from otherswithout offending the manystaunch "jingle haters" wholisten to FM. Sort of a phasedelectronic throwback to the oldNBC Xylophone.

Without expounding further onthe pros or cons of jingles, I wouldlike to bring your attention to anew concept that crossed my deskand was quite fascinating.

Century 21 Productions inDallas has put together a packagethat seems to be the next step injingle technology. It's called"Chroma-Key" and operates onthe premise of musical key. Thejingle is in the same key as therecord that follows it resulting inan almost eerie blend.

The package includes: one:ninety-six chroma-key jingles;two: a different cut for each of thetwelves chromatic musical keys;three: four distinctive vocal stylecolorations (i.e. male, female, group and female to male;) four:each key in fast and slow temposwith a wide variety of dynamiccontemporary lead-ins and five:weekly chroma-key board print-outs that match the national fiverecords to the right chroma-keycut eliminating the pitch pipeproblems. The chroma-key boardis mailed to subscribers eachweek.

Those of you who are into, anduse, jingles should check this out.Call Mike Eisler at (214) 638-3222and he'll send you a demo. Ifanything, you'll find itentertaining. I did.

by Candy TuskenThis was a month for conventions for the industry with ABC -Dunhill

holding their annual sales -promotion convention at the Beverly HiltonHotel in Los Angeles which also hallmarked ABC's 20th anniversary andthe 10th year of Dunhill's founding. The top ABC corporate officers wereattendance including Leonard Goldenson, ABC Board Chairman, EltonRule, President of the American Broadcasting Companies and MartinPompadur,President,ABC Leisure Group. The announcement of mostinterest was of the ABC acquisition of the Famous family of labels plusnews of a distribution deal with Myrrh Records, a division of WordRecords.

Capricorn's annual picnic held in Macon, Georgia was a smashingsuccess due in part to the two month preparation and $50,000 that wentinto gala affair. All the limosines in Macon were snatched up by labelPresident, Phil Walden who also provided six tent -covered bars whichdispensed 12 cases of scotch, 20 cases of Jack Daniels, 10 cases of rum,20 kegs of beer and 3,500 pounds of ice to the 600 "best friends" ofWalden that attended. Rock impressario, Bill Graham, singer BetteMidler and comedian Martin Mull were among the celebrities on hand tomake "Local boy who made good" Walden celebrate.

The NATRA convention held this year at the Century Plaza in LosAngeles appeared to be a tremendous success for that organizationwhose main concern revolves around Soul and Jazz labels. artists andradio stations. A few minor incidents (a knife fight in the lobbyWednesday night plus a few intermittent scuffles failed to mar a warm, enthusiastic crowd who attended the week long convention whichsported every major soul label's talents from Motown, 20th Century,Capitol, Philadelphia International, Curtom, Buddah, A&M, etc. All thelabels provided hospitality suites for the thirsty attendees with eachevening devoted to soul and jazz acts performing for the crowds.Meetings, planning sessions, rekindlings of land and new friendships, allunderlayed with a general party spirit, made the entire productionworthwhile, business -wise and just plain fun for thos who participated.

(As leader of the Guess Who, a groupwith an impressive roster of sometwelve chart singles in the space of twoyears and a string of twelve albumsover 41/2 years, Burton Cummingsbears watching. He either wrote or co -wrote most of the band's hits, from"These Eyes" through "Rain Dance."His has been the dominant voice andpersonality on Artificial Paradise, No.10 and Road Food. He wrote and sang"Star Baby." Recently, I talked withhim in the R&R offices, about the newalbum, the hits, radio and the musicscene in general.)

R&R: How did "Star Baby" comeabout?

CUMMINGS: I don't know. I wrote itIn about ten minutes. I'd just comeback from L.A. where we'd taped aMidnight Special and I had the idea infny head about how there are so manypeople hanging around at MS trying tolook important. The whole "star"syndrome struck me and I thought, well, what if you really flipped out oversome chick but you can't get near herbecause of all this brouhaha?

I didn't try to make it as short as itwas, but when we recorded it, it cameout like 2:25 and we started thinking,'maybe this is a single.' That helped, because our last three or four singleswere like over four minutes long andthere's no way those were going to getplayed.

R&R: Who was the inspiratiOn for"Glamour Boy" on the No. 10 album? Itseemed like a pretty good swipe atBowie. And you're both on the samelabel.

CUMMINGS: Yeah. Bowie was theinspiration. You remember thatpicture of our manager, Hunter, thatran in the trades when the single cameout? Hunter was standing there withouthis shirt, in a pair of tights, dressed upjust like Bowie on Aladdin Sane.

We sent an autographed copy of it toBowie. Apparently, Bowie and hismanagement had gone to the trouble ofcopyrighting that whole look (we hadHunter dressed up exactly like Bowie),and they threatened to sue us for about$30 if we didn't change the logo and thedesign. Shows you how much humorthey have.

R&R : During '69 to '71, when you hadthe string of hits, how did you go aboutwriting them? Were they' consciouslyconceived of as "hits" or were they justtunes?

CUMMINGS: Not specifically. "NoTime," for instance, we re-recordedbecause we'd done it on an earlier Ipbut the -production was horrid."Laughing," though, was specificallygeared as a hit single. RCA said, "Oh,please give us one more like 'TheseEyes' and you'll be set,' so RandyBachman and I did it. It took about 15minutes; we sent the tape to RCA andthat was it.

"American Woman" evolved out ofonstage jamming, really. It was thefarthest thing from our minds to pickas a single, from that album. "ShareThe Land" was never meant to be asingle; it was just an album concept, todo with overcrowding, etc.

It seems that we got panned forhaving so many hit singles. I think wehad hit singles before it wasfashionable to have them. Now that it'sfashionable to have them again, it's notas easy to get them.

R&R: Did you really worry aboutwhat kind of effects the critics wouldhave on sales?

CUMMINGS: It bothers you. Thatpan in Rolling Stone really hurt us. I

suppose a pan from RS meant a lotmore in 1970 than it does now, but it wasa hard knock to take. They called us theMonkees or something. I didn't thinkwe were like that; we had alwayswritten what I thought were decenttunes.

The R&R Interview

BURTONCUMMINGS

THE ROOTSBut we only had our own influences

from which to draw. We grew up in aMidwest prairie town in Canada, andall we ever heard was a watered-downversion of American AM radio. Thosewere our roots; Fats Domino, evenFabian and Avalon. And, you know, it'slike, you can't come from anywhereelse if that's where you're from. Youcan't draw on an L.A. person'sinfluences if you're from Winnipeg.

R&R: How do you view the fact thatthe singles haven't met with as muchsuccess of late.

CUMMINGS: Well, the band startedas far back as 1964; they had a hit in1965 with "Shakin' All Over." I mean,we had about 18 singles and fivealbums out before we ever signed withRCA, so it's not a new thing to havebroken success.

You just keep trying. I don't want todo anything else. There'd be nogratification in huge success if youhadn't paid for it. I can't imagine whatit would be like to have been in theBoxtops or something, being 17 andhaving your first record sell two andone-half million before you even knowwhat the business is about. I don't thinkyou can develop any kind of attitudeabout longevity, any staying power, when that happens.

This way, if we come back into thelimelight again, which we're hoping,we'll know how to handle it a lot better.

R&R: Who were your own primaryinfluences, on piano and singing?

CUMMINGS: I remember listeningto "My Heart Is An Open Book" by CarlDobkins Jr. when I was a kid and thing'I'd like to be a rock 'n' roll singer.'Before that, it was Fats Domino;sitting in Winnipeg, hearing that -NewOrleans accent just knocked me out.

I liked Bobby Rydell; the guys onCameo -Parkway who put his recordstogether really knew what they were

doing. When you listen to his singles, man, the sound they got on the snaredrum, in 1940 or '62, is comparable, production -wise, to what they gettoday.

I think that period was all a greatflash. I think it would've been more funto make it in those days, because thewhole thing wasn't as serious orintrospective. If you were BrianHyland or Troy Shondell or whoever, and you got a hit, you went out andtoured and that was it. Nobody wasputting acid in your whiskey or lookingat you as a cultural hero. It would havebeen fun. There wasn't as much ridingon it then.

TODAY'S MUSICIn a way, it's evolved back to that

today in certain areas. But noweverything is categorized; you've gotblues singers, folk singers, etc. In thosedays there was none of that; it was a hitrecord or it wasn't, and it soldprimarily to teenagers.

In those days, there never would, have been things like what I saw at theDylan concert: a couple of 13 -year oldgirls freaking out over Bob Dylan in acrowd of 30 -year olds. To begin with, those girls couldn't possibly haveknown Dylan's music, and when he wasbig you wouldn't find that wide a rangeof age in his audiences.

R&R: Who makes up the Guess Whoaudience?

CUMMINGS: I don't know. We're notselling as many records now as threeyears ago, but there are about 200,000people out there who buy everything werelease. They're growing up with us.That will happen to anybody whodevelops real staunch fans as the resultof a string of hits. But, that crowd, as itgrows older, is listening fordevelopments in our music. They hearwhat we're doing. A guy phoned me upthe other day and said he and hisfriends sat down and listened to the last

Baby" hasIntroduced us to a new audience andIt's helped reinforce us In areas thatare lust kind of passive. There aresome people who see the recordreviews, but unless they hear It onWABC or KHJ, they don't really knowthat we're still t (five.

The band will go back up sooner orlater. Another thing In our favor, is thatwe've done 12 Ips for one label. Andthey've been good to us. They're payingus good money. Our initial success hada lot to do with that. Now, if we getsomething going, RCA will really worklike hell for us.

RADIOR&R: Do you listen to much radio at

all?CUMMINGS: Quite a bit. I've been

listening to oldies on KRTH while I'min L.A. I like to hear what other peopleare hearing. I can't believe how goodAM radio is in L.A. If you lived inWinnipeg, you'd know what I mean. Wedon't have an FM station there, and I

come down here and put on KROQ andhear all this music I can't hearanywhere, and it's on AM!

R&R: What about the current radiosituation in Canada? With the rulingabout playing so many Canadianrecords and whatnot?

CUMMINGS: It's ridiculous upthere. The ruling is the CRTC whichspecifies that one out of every foursongs played has to be by Canadianacts, which is a joke. What I liked was acouple of weeks ago; CKLW added"Star Baby," but not as a Canadianrecord. Just as a record, because theyliked it.

The ruling has hurt the Canadianradio scene a lot. It's like begging, likewhen Woody Allen -turns to the cameraand begs for a laugh in a movie; it's asif the Canadian government werebegging for acceptance for theirCanadian artists, when they haven'tearned it.

A guy in Newfoundland could cut arecord in somebody's basement and itwould be just horrible trash, butbecause they're from Canada, it willget heard all the way out to VancouverIsland. I don't think that's right. If aguy in New York is cutting somethingthat's better, that's who should get theairplay.

It can't last. They're trying to givethe Canadian music industry a shot inthe arm, but it's backfiring, and I thinksooner or later they'll get rid of theruling. Unless in the interim a wholepile of really topnotch Canadian actsdevelop. But I can't see that happening.

TOURINGR&R: How important Is touring in

keeping your name in front of thepublic? Particularly when you're notgetting as much airplay as before?

CUMMINGS: I don't honestly know. That's a funny question. Because, incertain areas they play a lot of ourrecords, even the new ones, despite thefact that they haven't been nationalhits. I guess they keep getting requests, calls. In other areas where we're not aswell known, it's important to tour.

It's interesting that people arestarting to buy singles again. EltonJohn, man, he's about the closest thingto the Beatles since their demise; whenI hear the name Elton John, I think ofabout ten or twelve songs that all haveunique melodies. There was a demiseof AM radio, I think, with the end ofairplay for groups like the Beach Boys,Rascals and the Spoonful. That sort ofput a hole in It for awhile. But thingsare looking up again.

six albums back to back and he wantedto know what the fourth line In such.and -such song means. That flatters me,knowing that you're actually gettingInto people's minds.

R&R: But what about the necessityof singles as a means of building thataudience up even more?

CUMMINGS: "Star

A Salute To Jim ReevesThis week marks the 10th anniversary of the death of of their customary slot. And the same song was the biggest

"Gentleman Jim" Reeves. He died, along with his manager hit ever in Norway, so much so that it sold more copies thanthe entire Norwegian recording industry produced that year. His movie, "Kimberley Jim", was produced in South Africawhere he was extremely popular.

His hits include "Am I Losing You?", "Billy Bayou","Blue Boy", "Blue Side Of Lonesome", "Distant Drums","Four Walls", "He'll Have To Go", "Guilty", "I Guess I'mCrazy", "I Missed Me", "I Won't Come In While He's There","Is This Me?", "I'm Getting Better", "Mexican Joe", "MissingYou", "Snowflake", "We Could", "Welcome To My World","When You Are Gone" (written by Dean Manuel), and many, many more. They can be found in his nearly thirty RCAalbums, most of which are still available.

There will be other outstanding balladeers and otherballads, but never another Gentleman Jim. And, all who followwill have in one way or another been touched and influencedby this Texan with the rich, smooth, velvety voice, Jim Reeves.

and friend, Dean Manuel, on July 31, 1964 in a plane crashnear the Nashville airport.

No tribute would be complete without including the textof the memorial to Jim in the Country Music Hall Of Fame,Nashville. It reads -

JIM REEVESAugust 20, 1924-July 31, 1964

The velvet style of Gentleman Jim Reeves was aninternational influence. His rich voice brought millionsof new fans to country music from every corner of theworld. Although the crash of his private airplane in1964 took his life, posterity will keep his name alivebecause they will remember him as one of CountryMusic's most important performers.

Elected to the Hall Of Fame in 1967.Jim Reeves

The legacy Jim left to music in general, and country musicin particular, is becoming more obvious as time goes by. Heand his Blue Boys opened many previously closed doors forcountry entertainers by presenting his music tastefully topeople who had never before listened to 'Country'. At a timewhen most country artists were stereotyped as 'Hillbillies',Jim presented his type of country with a warmth and stylethat will never be dated, and it is as modern and easy to listen

to today as it was 15 years ago.At the time of his death, he was at the height of his career.

He was known and admired world wide, and had had hit songs

in such areas as South Africa, England, and Norway. Forexample, his recording of "I Love You Because" was Number

1 in England for six weeks running, knocking the Beatles out

POP/MOR NOTESby MikeKasabo

MUSIC DI RECTORK1 IS/LOS ANGELES

Alright, it's finally here ... new Carole King"Jazzman" from her upcoming album. Consensusfrom our reporters indicate that this might beCarole's biggest single since "It's Too Late."

As noted in our New & Active section, the newBobby Goldsboro record is already way ahead ofany other brand new record this week with thepossible exception of Mac Davis' redone "Stop AndSmell The Roses."

Our friend Carol Merck who has been musicdirector at WSB for a number of years has decidedto leave her position at the station. Carol, if yourecall, was very instrumental in proving that theKris Kristofferson record "Why Me" was a smash. If you need a super music lady you can reach her at(404) 296-6567 Gene Christie has replaced Carol inthe music department, and we'd like to welcomehim aboard.

Linda Toms WLW-Cincinnati brings our attentionto an album that features Evil Knievel. One of thecuts called "Why" is a poem written and recited byEvil himself. The other track she's airing "BalladOf Evil Knievel" is sung by John Mahoney. Lindareports that phone reaction is unbelievable. Albumis issued by Amherst Records.

Another old friend Tom Murphy has moved his"world famous" act to WMAQ-Chicago where hecan be heard 2-6pm every day. If I know Murphyhe's still telling lies about his age.

Robert W. Knight, Program Director at WROC-Rochester, writes to tell us that his station has beenhaving great success since its change from an oldline MOR format. Currently WROC is relyingheavily on oldies programmed a la WGAR. Line upincludes Jim Connors 6-10am; Jim Fields 10-2; BobKnight 2-4; Mick St. John (from a PD position atWHFM) 4-7; John Elliott 7-12 mid; Tony DeFustopulling weekends. Robert gained a great deal ofexperience with his current format when he wasmusic director at WRFD-Columbus.

Effective with this issue, our POP-MOR sectionwill now have an additional page.

It'll be used for more record information, andwill also provide the space needed to include anyand all station information (i.e. jocks changes, station promotions, ratings and the like) plus anypictures you'd like to send in. If you could help usalong these lines it would be very helpful to us, andwill surely serve you. Have a great weekend.
