The new symbol alerts people to the fact that their information is being collected, and directs them to sources, which will clearly explain how their information is to be used.

And the Data Protection Act 1998
The DPA works in 2 ways:1. It gives data subjects (individuals who are the subject
of personal data) certain rights2. It also requires data controllers (those who
collect and use personal data) to be open about how the information is used and to follow the 8 principles of ‘good information handling’

You, the data subjects, can prevent mishandling of information on you by being aware of the purpose/s for which information is being collected, at the time it is being collected.

Information Padlock Symbol
The Data Protection Commissioner and the National Consumer Council have devised this:
A symbol to act as a signpost which tells you that personal information is being collected on you.
