2 JOHNS HOPKINS CLUB

The great Bob Babb is approach-ing his 38th season as head baseball coach of the Johns Hopkins Baseball program. Bob grew up in a base-ball-loving town, in a baseball-lov-ing family. Leaving the small town of Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania to at-tend college at Johns Hopkins, Bob found himself in the culture shock of a big city. Opening his eyes to new people, new cultures, and new ways of life, he entered Hopkins as part of the Class of ’77 with a major in History. Originally recruited by

the basketball coach to play, Bob played for one year and dove into two other sports as well. He began to play baseball for the Blue Jays amidst keeping a full schedule assisting the basketball and football coaches. He would go on to graduate and teach high school Social Studies, still keeping his Blue Jay ties by assisting coach Denny Cox for Hopkins football and baseball after his school duties ended. He at-tended Morgan State in 1980 and 1981 where he earned his Master’s Degree whilst teaching Physical Education to their undergraduates. During this time, Babb became the full time Head Baseball Coach for Hopkins (in 1980) where he has remained and continued assist-ing with football until 2000.

Coach Babb began coming to the Club for after game events and tailgate parties through the Athletic Department. He started attend-ing the Club so frequently, he decided to get his own membership.

He enjoys going to the Tap Room, as it is less formal, so he is able to bring his student athletes in after sporting events in their game apparel. He and his athletes are also big fans of the Friday night buf-fets in the Tap Room. The convenience of the Club allows for spur of the moment trips, and the quality of the food and kindness of the staff are unmatched. He loves the versatility of the Club, as it serves as a means to meet his personal and professional needs. He is able to schedule events with alumni and parents or wind down after a busy week and relax with family and friends.

Babb has earned various milestones over his fruitful career. With 1069 victories (more than any other Hopkins coach in any sport), thir-ty conference championships, and 20 NCAA Tournament appear-ances, Bob Babb ranks as one of the winningest coaches in NCAA Division III history. Seven of his players have gone on to play pro-fessionally, and his athletes have an impressive 97% graduation rate. He was also one of four individuals who was inducted to the ABCA (American Baseball Coaches Association) Hall of Fame in January 2016. Coach Babb has created a legacy that will have a lasting influ-ence on the University for years and years to come. He claims his proudest achievement is not any trophy or award, but the accom-plishment he has felt through recruiting and mentoring so many outstanding men, and the lifelong bonds he has created throughout the years. Being a history buff, Bob enjoys reading historical novels. The last book he read was Lincoln’s Foreign Policy by Jay Monaghan, and he is currently reading some historical fiction work by Stephen Berry. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, going out for dinner with friends, and, of course, reading!

WEEKLY EVENTS OF INTEREST

With winter and spring grappling in their wrestling match, I hope the gentler season

prevails with its official arrival on March 20. We all know that Baltimore springs can be wet and chilly and comes roaring in as a lion rather than sheepishly lamb-like. Springtime in Maryland ushers in asparagus, strawberries, morels, beets, rhubarb, peas and with the ever popular farmer’s markets, fresh baby chickens, lamb, brown and black calves. Slowly blue crabs start to waken and soft shell crabs are swimming about. Truly a world delicacy! Rockfish and oysters are still available as well as the start of spring apples. After months of cold gray skies, colors start to pop, everything seems vivid and bright and hope springs eternal. You realize Alice was right.

ASPARAGUS CRAB QUICHE

¾ lb. lightly cooked (3 minutes) 2" pieces of asparagus

1 9" unbaked pie crust

½ lb. picked jumbo lump crab meat

1 cup shredded white cheddar cheese

1 tbsp flour

3 eggs lightly beaten

1½ cup half and half

salt to taste

Tabasco to taste

2 tbsp reggiano cheese finely grated

In the pie crust, place the asparagus, crab and cheese over the bottom of the pie. Take the rest of the ingredients and mix well, strain over and into the pie.

Bake at 350 for 30 – 40 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes before cutting.

Here is a terrific spring luncheon or brunch dish

American policing is in the greatest period of change since the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Incidents involving the police drive national and local headlines almost daily. News media, social media, special interest groups, political leaders, and others demand reform. Yet lit-tle is known about police officers and their agencies – what they do, why they do it, their successes and failures, and the challenges they face in the months and years ahead. This session will be an open dis-cussion about what people need to know about and how they can influence the quality of their police.
