Variety Trade Magazine Reports: "The number of behind-the-scenes jobs held by women in the top 250 films has seen virtually no progress in the past two decades”, according to a study published Wednesday by San Diego State’s Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film.

Among the report’s findings: “In 2017, women made up 18% of all directors, writers, producers, executive producers, editors, and cinematographers working on the top 250 domestic grossing films, up 1 percentage point from 2016.”

“If you look at the history of the film industry, the industry only changes only when it is absolutely forced to do so,” Lauzen said. “The real question: are they feeling enough pressure to change the structures of the filmmaking business to welcome more diversity?”

Months after Frances McDormand popularized the term “inclusion riders,” Warner Bros became the first major studio to adopt a company-wide commitment to diversity and inclusion.

WarnerMedia, the parent company of Warner Bros, announced on Wednesday that the studio, along with its sister companies HBO and Turner, will launch the initiative with the film “Just Mercy,” starring Michael B. Jordan.

The “Black Panther” star was one of the first actors to commit to using inclusion riders, which allow actors to require diversity in the cast and crew of a film production as part of their contracts.

Lori Dovi, founder of International Women Working in Film (IWWF) launches phase one of the groundbreaking

International Women Working in Film Directory.

Los Angeles, CA (Sept 15, 2018) - As Hollywood and countries around the world unite in gender equality initiatives for

women working in film, there is a growing demand for a global resource to cross-connect all crafts of women in film world-

wide. The International Women Working in Film Directory will provide such information for production companies, directors,

producers, production managers, studios, guilds, unions, film commissions, etc. The goal of the directory is to make it easy

to find professional women in film for employment, creative expression, business and to enable equal participation in the

interview process. It will also provide a large exposure of job opportunities for the women listed in return.

As parity interviews and gender inclusion are being called forth with initiatives like the 50/50 Pro Quote in Sweden, Venice

Film Festival Parity Pledge, 5050x2020 in France, ReFrame in Hollywood, Times Up, The Geena Davis Institute and many

more, the directory will serve as the unique ‘go to’ for filling jobs for women, networking, interviewing and collaboration. It

will accomplish what The Variety 411 has done, but with an emphasis on women working in film.

The directory will contain hundreds of job classifications from development to distribution in all countries. The directory

staff, through networking events and research, will surface qualified candidates for all positions.

About Lori Dovi:

Lori is a production sound mixer with more than twenty years of experience. Born in San Francisco, CA where she started

her career, she has worked on numerous notable documentary, narrative and commercial projects. She is a member of

IATSE 695 and Cinema Audio Society. Six months ago Lori began the Facebook group, “Women Filmmakers Hiring Women

Worldwide!” It was fortuitous timing as Lori proposed this new group just one week before Frances McDormand’s now-famous

‘inclusion rider’ speech at the Academy Awards. In less than 6 months the group has grown to more than 4,300

members in 67 countries. Lori recently returned from a European tour visiting seven countries where she personally met

with over 600 women in film to discuss how to unify women in film worldwide with the goal to create more

opportunities for work.

"Women are unique. They have their own voice, style, character, spirit and point of view that will make our movies become more colorful..."-Yulia Hesti-Script, Supervisor (Indonesia/South East Asia)

“I put out a call for women producers with experience shooting in Brazil recently, and got overwhelming responses. I love having this world wide resource at my fingertips. It makes producing on the global stage so much easier. Thank you!!!” -Cheryl S. Espinoza, Producer (New York & Los Angeles)

“As a Senior Producer, Director/Assistant Director and Writer of nonfiction projects, productions and documentary films, my work takes me to the five continents. Sometimes I hire a team, other times I’m the one being hired. I have championed gender equality for 20 years on every set and in every studio, edit suite, news and screening room. With an inclusive directory of women in the film, media and audiovisual community, the IWWD will help create a new foundation for how we understand and make connections between our different experiences with equality.” -Valerie Pries, Producer/Director (New York)

“It’s amazing [this bias] still exists, we know female directors get big box office successes, higher [Roi] on those films. And yet they are seen as not experienced enough….You can have a guy who’s never made a film and he can get a big budget.” “If the industry doesn’t start working with us, I’m not afraid of quotas,” Serner said. “I think we’ve shown that they [women filmmakers] do deliver, so let them.” -Anna Serner, Swedish Film Institute CEO

“I have been working in the industry for many years and am now thrilled to see a seismic shift in how things work. It’s only through women getting into hiring positions that the next wave of working women in our industry will thrive. I can’t tell you how many times male and female producers have said to me: “I’d love to hire more women but I can’t find any”. Well, now with an international directory with women able to fill every position on set, they won’t be able to say that anymore!” -Nikila Cole, Director (Toronto & Los Angeles).

“Women in key creative roles on UK feature films• Only two out of the nine key creative roles have above 50% female representation.• 25.7% of producers of UK films are women.• Women account for 14.6% of screenwriters on UK films.

Female crew members on UK feature films• The transportation, sound, and camera departments have under 10% women crew members.• Only casting, make-up, and costume departments have a majority of women crew.”Stephen Follows (Film data and researcher).
