They are two of the most moving worship experiences of the entire year. It’s not often that pastors feel as though they get to worship while leading worship, but these two services provide that space. Maundy Thursday is the commemoration of the Last Supper from which we get our celebration of the sacrament of Holy Communion. There will be a short meditation along with plenty of singing. Perhaps the most moving part of the service will happen at the 6:30 PM service only and that’s the ritual of stripping the altar in preparation for Good Friday. Rev. Missy and I, with the help of a few leaders, will remove all of the communion elements, altar clothes, decoration, and color from the sanctuary. The service ends in silence with the altar being draped in black and the white linen carried out the center aisle. All of this is to symbolize the disciples deserting Jesus in the garden of Gethsemene, and the darkness that came after his death. On Good Friday, we will commemorate Jesus’ crucifixion and death with a service of Tenebrae. Tenebrae means darkness. This is why the service will begin at sunset, 7:18 PM. There is no sermon or mediation during this service. There are not the usual prayers that are said out loud in unison, but rather it is a service filled with ritual, music, and the reading of the passion story. Twelve readers will each read a portion of the story of Jesus’ last night. After they finish their reading, they’ll extinguish a candle on the altar, walk down the center aisle and pound a nail into a cross in the entry way outside the sanctuary. At the end of the service, every person will have the opportunity to pound a nail into the cross, as a sign of our own confession and need for repentance; for turning towards Jesus and his teachings, rather than turning away. Music will be sung by Rev. Missy, Jamie Carnes, Shelly Bitner (our Interim Director of Music), and myself, throughout the service. This Sunday is the beginning of Holy Week, with Palm Sunday as we remember Jesus arriving at Jerusalem. Come to worship as we celebrate with palms, but set our face towards Good Friday. This is perhaps the one week of the year when we really remember the stories of our faith. We surround the stories with beautiful music and ritual, but hope to let the stories speak for themselves. Take the extra time. Give yourself permission to come to church throughout Holy Week, including Easter. I promise, you won’t be disappointed that you did. In fact, you might be surprised by what you experience. Easter doesn’t come without Good Friday. New life does not come without death. Possibilities don’t open without other doors closing. Come worship as a community during Holy Week, and let us be changed together. Blessings for this Holiest of Weeks, Kyle

The Easter Breakfast Crew

FLOWERS, PLEASE ... LILIES & EASTER FLOWERSEaster is right around the corner. Would you like to help beautify the altar for Easter with lilies and other spring flowers? You can begin dropping off potted spring flowers for decorating for our Easter celebration starting Monday, March 21, and throughout Holy Week during regular office hours. If you wish to make your flower a Memorial, we will have a sign up sheet in the office at that time so you can list exactly how you would like your Memorial to read. If you would like your specific lily back, labels will be available in the office to mark your plant. Lilies and plants may be picked up beginning on March 29 when the office re-opens following Easter Sunday.

Spring is right around the corner, and avid gardeners and landscapers will tell you there is lots to do to prepare! Did you know you buy almost everything you’ll need with Scrip? Get your gardening tools, pruners, landscaping rocks, mulch, garden statues, bird baths, and more at Ace Hardware, Menards, or Mills Fleet Farm. Pick up potting soil, starter pots, seeds, fertilizer, and water cans at one of those stores or Wal Mart. All participate in our Scrip program and St. Stephens gets a percentage back when you use Scrip for those purchases.Planning a larger spring project? Perhaps building a potting shed, backing yard storage, or a new deck? Place your order for a large quantity of Scrip for Menards and build up our faith community with the percentage St. Stephens will earn back at the same time! From gardening gloves and galoshes to pumpkin seeds and petunias ... and everything in between ... Scrip is the way to go! Plan ahead and watch your investment in St. Stephens grow!

Music Notes & News

from Shelly

“Joyful Chrstians often enjoy music. Have you noticed how it’s hard to worry while singing songs to God?”

~Charles R. Swindoll

There are times in our lives that we experience setbacks, criticism, sorrows, and other challenges. The awesome thing is that our inner joy is not dependent on our outward circumstances, but on our inward focus. When we focus on God, everything else disappears. When we add music to that mix, especially when the music is praise and worship, all the worldly problems fade in the distance. Even though the circumstances may still be with us, we can experience the hope that all will be well in spite of it all.

I pray you all have a song in your heart today!

- Shelly Bitner

FEED YOUR SPIRIT . . .Raised Expectations

“Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” - 1 Peter 2:10

Recently, I solicited our “Theology on Tap” small group for deep spiritual questions we could ponder over our pints. One woman asked:

“What do you expect of me as a fellow church member?”

I love this question. I love it because it reminds me that I am a people.

It’s important to state that she was not asking me, as her minister, what I expected of her. (Who cares what I think?!) She was asking the people around her, fellow theologians and churchgoers, what they expected of her. She was thinking like a people.

And that begins, uncomfortably, with expectations. Being a people means others make claims on me; on my time, my resources, my heart. They expect me to pray for their father who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. They expect me to be gracious when their kids act up in worship. They expect me to bake cookies for the potluck and place my hard-earned cash in the collection plate. They expect me, most terrifyingly, to expect things of them; to need their care, concern, and casseroles.

But, we may protest, that brings up a lot of other questions. What about unrealistic expectations, unfair expectations, unmet expectations? What about the unjust ways in which expectations have rested upon those without power or privilege? What about autonomy, and freedom, and privacy? What gives you the right to expect something of me? Who cares what you think?!

Yes! These are just the kinds of questions a people would ask!

Prayer

God, you have called us to be a people, your people. Help us figure out how. Amen.

PROPANE FOR RE-MEMBER

So far, we’ve sent $830.00 to help with the cost of propane for heating homes on the Pine Ridge Reservation this winter, but more help is still needed. This is a great way to support the work of Re-Member even in advance of our mission trip. 100% of the funds are distributed to our neighbors on the Reservation. To donate, please mark your giving envelope: Re-Member.

RE-MEMBER MISSION TRIPThe dates for our mission trip to the Pine Ridge Reservation in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, have been set for July 23-30, 2016! A couple of people are already planning to join Rev. Carnes for this incredible experience. Will you join us? Mission trip participants will be responsible for their own travel and other expenses. For more information, contact Rev. Carnes directly and keep watching the Interpreter!

IT’S TIME! ... TESTING, TESTING, 1 ... 2 ... 3 ...ROLLING OUT ELECTRONIC GIVINGWe are now getting ready to roll out electronic giving! BUT Tina needs a few “guinea pigs” who would be willing to help us test out the new system as we move forward to implement it. If you have been waiting for electronic giving to come to St. Stephens so you could automate your giving, AND you want to be one of the first to take advantage of this option, please call Tina in the office and get signed up. (715.536.7322) She is looking for 10 givers to start with electronic giving for the first month to be sure everything is going smoothly, and then we will offer the electronic giving to anyone who wishes to participate in the electronic giving program. We are utilizing a state-of-the art system to ensure your personal financial information and bank account numbers will remain secure and confidential. We are excited to take this next step! Can you help?

We would be happy to purchase a rose for the altar in honor and celebration of the blessing of the birth of your new baby and to announce the birth on Sunday, in the bulletin, and in the next issue of the Interpreter. Please let us know that it is OK to share your child’s name, date of birth, and your names at this time. Our deadline to order a rose is Wednesday, so if you call us before the end of the day on Wednesday, the rose will be placed on the altar and the announcement made the following Sunday and in that Sunday’s bulletin and the following Interpreter. VOLUNTEER DRIVERS NEEDEDFor many cancer patients, getting to and from treatment is one of their toughest challenges. The American Cancer Society needs volunteer drivers to help provide free rides for people facing cancer in our community. Visit www.cancer.org/drive or call 1.800.227.2345 to learn more about how you can help patients in our area get to the treatments they need. HOW SWEET IT IS ...Did you know that you can satisfy your sweet tooth with luscious chocolates and help support St. Stephens at the same time? It’s true! The Ye Olde Sweet Shop in Merrill participates in the Scirp program! Ask about Ye Olde Sweet Shop Scrip at the Scrip table! When you purchase Scrip, a percentage of your purchase goes directly to St. Stephens, and it doesn’t cost you a cent extra! The merchants make the donation! Now how sweet is that?

AGE-RELATED RESOURCES FOR EVERYONEAnyone can experience age-related uncertainties and challenges. Their experienced team of professionals can help you or a loved one obtain supportive resources or understand long term care options. They also offer practical living classes and convenient meal services to achieve and maintain an independent lifestyle. Flexible consultation options are available by phone, at your home, or at one of their five offices in Antigo, Merrill, Wausau, Wisconsin Rapids, or Marshfield. WE NEED ... A FEW GOOD VOLUNTEERSTo Run Our Sound System ...With our “new” sound and video system in place, we are looking for someone who would like to learn how to manage the system for us during worship and for some other events as well. If you or someone you know has experience with a sound board, please let us know. If you know absolutely nothing about sound equipment, but think it could be interesting, let us know. If you have a spouse or a kid that is somewhat technically inclined, and you think needs something to do on Sunday mornings, let us know. If you’re in high school, and need volunteer hours, let us know. This person might be a teenager or an octogenarian, or anywhere in-between. This is an important ministry position to help keep the sound as consistent as possible. If you’re even a little interested, don’t be shy, it’s fairly intuitive overall, just call the church office. Thank you in advance!

WEDNESDAY EVENINGSWe have heard from many people who would like to come to Lenten worship on Wednesday evenings, but simply can’t because of the time, and we’d like to say, we hear you, and next year we will return the worship time back to 6:30. We changed the time to have continuity with the worship that was already held on Wednesdays. We now know that there are many people who would like to worship who simply can’t make it home from work that soon. We apologize for the difficulty caused this year by the time change. We appreciate that so many more folks would like to be at worship. We’ve heard you and we’ll make it better next year. Thank you for wanting to be in worship.

To Help With Interior Decorating ...Perhaps you’ve noticed that there are spaces in our building that could use some “love”. Spaces that have not been painted or redecorated or rearranged in well…plenty long enough. Spaces such as the lounge, the old office meeting room that is always warm, the fellowship hall, the men’s bathroom, and others. If you have an interest or a knack for what could be called

“interior design,” let us know. We’d like to put a team of a few people together to start evaluating how we can make our space more usable and more beautiful. If this interests you, or someone you know might be a good fit, call Tina in the church office, and let us know! Thank you in advance!
