The Introduction to Sound

What is sound you ask?

The History of sound.

• The use of sound to evoke emotion, reflect mood and indicate actions in plays.

• This all began in the prehistoric times. • Plays were performed in medieval times in a form

which used music and sound effects to enhance performances.

• Before recording technology and playback systems the music was created live by instrumentalists, and sound effects by mechanical machines.

• Cues are written in the script for music and sound effects to be played at the appropriate time.

Examples of sound machines.

• Italian composer Luigi Russolo built mechanical sound-making devices, called intonarumori, for theatrical and music performances starting around 1913.

• This device was meant to simulate natural and man-made sounds, such as trains and bombs

the progression of sound

• As sound and recording technology have progressed, so too has the ability of the Sound Design, to create and control multi-part layered textures, music and effects played back within the performance space.

• Theatre sound systems range from small and simple to some of the most complex sound systems in use across any industry.

• So what happened between instruments and technology? You will see in my example.

•Example:

•An average West End musical production may easily have over a hundred microphones and over a hundred speakers, often all being used and controlled at the same time with only one or two people controlling it.

• Indian filmmakers have paid close attention to the sound design of their films to combine the values of art with realism in order to work out a smooth harmony between sound and other elements of film.

• The Indian and American Sound culture are very much alike and same with others as well. Its hard to find a difference between them.
