Scope and Content Notes for the Franklin B. Sanborn Collection

1. Biographical Information

Franklin B. Sanborn (b. 1831 B d. 1917) was an influential American author, editor,

journalist, abolitionist, and social reformer. He was born in Hampton, New Hampshire, on Dec.

15, 1831, the son of Aaron and Lydia (Leavitt) Sanborn. He graduated from Harvard in 1855

and

became very active in the abolitionist movement, befriending Thomas Wentworth Higginson,

Julia Ward Howe, William Lloyd Garrison, Harriet Tubman, and others. He was close to John

Brown, but prudently distanced himself for some years following the Harper=s Ferry raid and

Brown=s execution. He was especially active in the free-state cause, and made several trips into

the West.

He was chairman of the Massachusetts Board of State Charities from 1874 to 1876, and

inspector of charities from 1879 to 1889. In addition, he was a lecturer at Cornell, Smith and

Wellesley Colleges, and at the Concord, Mass. School of Philosophy.

He was a founding member of the American Social Science Association, the National

Prison Association, the National Conference of Charities, the Clarke School for the Deaf, the

Massachusetts Infant Asylum, and the Concord School of Philosophy. He was secretary or

president of most of these organizations.

From 1876 to 1897, he was the editor of the Boston Commonwealth, the Springfield

Republican, and the Journal of Social Science. He issued about 40 volumes of reports of

societies between 1865 and 1888.

He was intimately acquainted with the leading transcendentalists in New England, and

3

wrote important biographies of Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Bronson

Alcott. In addition, he wrote biographies of Dr. Samuel G. Howe, Dr. Pliny Earle, and edited

volumes about John Brown, Thoreau, and Emerson. He also wrote a History of New

Hampshire.

His first wife was Ariana Smith Walker. She fell sick before they could even

get officially engaged, and he married her eight days before she died. He later married Louisa

Leavitt, his cousin, in 1862. She bore him three sons: Thomas, Victor Channing, and Francis.

2. Information About the Collection

The bulk of the collection consists of letters to Franklin B. Sanborn from the 1860s to

1902, with some falling earlier. The letters are a mixture of routine professional correspondence

and personal correspondence. Most of the professional letters are in regards to various

charitable institutions, schools, asylums, prisons, etc. There are several letters to John S.

Blatchford and Gamaliel Bradford regarding membership in the American Social Science

Association and requesting copies of their journal (most of these letters originally had some sort

of payment enclosed). Several of the personal letters are in regards to William Ellery

Channing=s death. As a whole, the letters provide a window into his professional and social life,

but no real revelations or insights into his private life. Notes and quotations have been provided

for letters of interest. In addition, the collection contains some religious-themed essays and

sermon notes, as well as some printed material. The significance of the manuscripts to Sanborn

is unknown. In summary: while this collection on its own would not provide the basis for a

biography, it does present a useful and often fascinating record of Sanborn=s personal and

professional affairs.
