  • The Vicar’s Voice

First and foremost, THANK YOU! Thanks for having me here as your vicar, thanks for helping me with

Carolyn Rotter’s funeral, and thanks for vacation time. January 6-20 Anitta and I had a fantastic trip to her homeland of Finland. This was my fourth trip there, and we focused on family time. Anitta said it was “fast and friendly” and “one of the epic trips in life.”

The trip gave me space to ponder many things. “Honor your father and mother.” Anitta’s mother is 85 and having some trouble with mobility and

memory. She has a widespread reputation for being a challenging person. Nonetheless, Anitta had a strong desire to see her mother. Anitta listened patiently to her mom’s health complaints and gave her some rubdowns. “Love never fails.” Even though parent-child relationships can be fraught with difficulties and complex emotions, love prevails and forgiveness goes a long way. I saw this through how Anitta lovingly gave her mom attention.

Being away gave me space to reflect on Carolyn’s life and death and how it affected me. I continued to

shed some tears. I have played piano and organ for numerous funerals, but something was profoundly different about being the one given the sacred honor of saying the last words about someone’s life. She touched many people, and she touched me. Funerals put us into contact with the most basic and important aspects of life and faith. Jesus’ death and resurrection give us great hope – our “life is hidden with Christ in God.” Col. 3:3

Finland is a beautiful country of just over 5 million people. I thought about

many other things including the beauty of nature, global warming, secularism, the nature and future of the church, etc. The Lutheran church is still the state church of Finland, but hardly anyone goes. They now have shared ministries sprouting up for the same reasons: numbers of people and money. We went to this beautiful church and got to sing with the fine organ. There was a decent turnout, but, like many American churches, I was one of the younger ones… Seeing the state of the Finnish church prodded me to think more about us and about evangelism. We need to take seriously our call to be “fishers of people.” More on this later as I work out the details of my internship project…

Grace and peace in Christ, Vicar Jonathan

❖ Thank you all so much for the wonderful Christmas cards Ed received from the SLM family. They brought him much pleasure. Thanks to Carolyn Rotter, who came up with the idea, and Annette Richards who delivered the cards. We hope all of you had a blessed holiday season, and will have a happy and healthy new year.

~Thanks again, Ed and Minnie Chovanec

❖ Thank you to all of the SLM volunteers who helped distribute 6,764 lbs. of food to 77 individuals, including 8 new clients for 207 family members through the Central Texas/AMEN Food Bank truck in January. ~Weldon Hartmann

❖ Thank you for the Christmas cards from the members of Shared Lutheran Ministry. It brought me joy to hear from you all. Pastor Marcia and Vicar Jonathan and Anitta’s visits were so enjoyable and uplifting. I appreciate receiving the weekly bulletins by mail, if I wasn’t able to attend services. Of course, ‘Thank You’ to Gladys and J. R. for bringing the Portals of Prayer. Take Care, God Bless! ~Leda Mae Muske

❖ Thank you for your generous contribution of toys and cash to the 2019 Deputy Santa Program. The response from folks and businesses this year was overwhelming. Your donation helped to provide toys for over 648 children in Fayette County. It is both a joy and a pleasure for the deputies and volunteers to see the faces “light up” as the children and parents receive these gifts. For some of the families, it may have been the only gifts under their trees this year. We are so fortunate to live and work in a community where volunteers and donors give so generously to help support programs like the Deputy Santa Program. ~Sheriff Keith Korenek

❖ Thank you for your gift of $542 to ELCA World Hunger. “Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above” (James 1:17a) Your generous gift is enabling transformative works of love here in the United States and in 60 countries around the world, providing what is needed to end hunger and poverty: access to clean water, health care, agriculture, livestock, education, and peace and justice. Together, we are creatively and courageously working toward a just world where all are fed. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of our neighbors around the world. ~In Christ, Rev. Daniel Rift

❖ Thank you for the support and help

given when our son, Matthew, and sister

Carolyn died. We also give thanks to

the Lord for the resurrection to come.

  • Looking Ahead … Listening to God’s Word

February 2 ~ Within the gospel reading’s profound words lies the simple message that God is revealed in a human person. Though we may try to understand how the Word existed with God from the beginning of time, the wonder we celebrate at Christmas is that the Word continues to dwell among us. Christ comes among us in the gathered assembly, the scriptures, the waters of new birth, and the bread and the wine. Through these ordinary gifts we receive the fullness of God’s grace and truth. Micah 6:1-8; Psalm 15; 1 Corinthians 1:18-31; Matthew 5:1-12

February 9 ~ Light shines in the darkness for the upright, the psalmist sings. Isaiah declares that when we loose the bonds of injustice and share our bread with the hungry, the light breaks forth like the dawn. In another passage from the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus, the light of the world, calls his followers to let the light of their good works shine before others. Through baptism we are sent into the world to shine with the light of Christ. Isaiah 58:1-9a[9b-12]; Psalm 112:1-9[10]; 1 Corinthians 2:1-12[13-16]; Matthew 5:13-20

February 16 ~ In today’s reading from Deuteronomy we are called to choose life by loving and obeying God. Much of today’s gospel reading echoes portions of the Ten Commandments. Jesus’ instructions to the crowd reveal a pattern of behavior that honors both God and the neighbor, resulting in life and health for the whole community. We too are invited to embrace these commandments, not out of fear of retribution, but because God has promised that to do so means life for us. Deuteronomy 30:15-20; Psalm 119:1-8; 1 Corinthians 3:1-9; Matthew 5:21-37

February 23 ~ Today’s festival is a bridge between the Advent-Christmas-Epiphany cycle that comes to a close today and the Lent-Easter cycle that begins in several days. On a high mountain Jesus is revealed as God’s beloved Son, echoing the words at his baptism. This vision of glory sustains us as Jesus faces his impending death in Jerusalem. We turn this week to Ash Wednesday and our yearly baptismal journey from Lent to Easter. Some churches put aside the alleluia at the conclusion of today’s liturgy. This word of joy will be omitted during the penitential season of Lent and will be sung again at Easter. Exodus 24:12-18; Psalm 2; 2 Peter 1:16-21; Matthew 17:1-9

  • News and Events

Important news from the Synod LEAD Launch!! Many of you remember Peggy (Cantos) Hahn and the fine work she did with our congregations around Child in Our Hands and other Youth ministries. In 2012, Peggy became the developer of a new ministry in our synod – LEAD, the acronym for Living Every Day as Disciples. Under her leadership, this organization has developed dozens of resources, coached leaders, consulted with congregations and convened cohorts of leaders in our synod and all around the ELCA. Our own councils used the Roadmap tool they developed for our goal-setting 3 years ago. Pastor and Interns have attended many of their continuing education events. This year LEAD becomes a separate non-profit organization with Peggy serving as the Executive Director. Here’s the big kick-off celebration:

LEAD Launch and Celebration In honor of

Deacon Peggy Hahn on Friday, Feb. 7, 2020 – 6:00 pm

Faith Lutheran Church 4600 Bellaire Blvd in Bellaire, TX

RSVP by Jan. 31 if you plan to go. Online donations to help launch LEAD can be made on the synod website (www.gulfcoastsynod.org) Pictures of her work with us are welcome, too! Pastor Marcia plans to attend. If you would like to ride along, let her know! Synod Assembly is coming up May 22-23, 2020 in New Orleans! Each congregation can now have two voting members. It’s always fun to get away to NO even if it’s for church business! And it is always interesting to be part of the work of the larger church. If you’re interested in being a voting member from your church, talk to your church council president. We can arrange car pools for those who attend. Our own Aimee Elles is now working at the synod office as Administrative Services Coordinator. They love her as much as we do!

A few of the many SLM Volunteers at Second Chance

What a big week we had in the new spacious Second Chance Sales and Donations building from Jan. 14-20!! We had volunteers from all four of our SLM churches during our first week there! The Shared Lutheran Ministry of Fayette County is a cooperative rural ministry of four congregations: St. John Lutheran in Ellinger, St. Paul Lutheran in Fayetteville, St. John Lutheran in Rutersville, and St. John’s Lutheran in Warrenton. All are member congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod. We share pastors and an office/business manager. We share whatever ministry benefits the mission of Jesus Christ.
