THE EASTER RISING

BACKGROUND

THE IRISH REPUBLICAN BROTHERHOOD (IRB)The Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB)

was Formed in 1890. This secret organisation planned the 1916 rising.

In 1915 the IRB Military Council was established, the members of the council were: Thomas Clarke, Sean MacDiarmada, Patrick Pearse, Eamonn Ceant, Joseph Plunkett, James Connolly and Thomas MacDonagh.

This group was claimed to be ‘The Provisional Government’

Clan Na Geal was also in great support of the IRB and contacted Germany for ammunition for the rising.

THE IRISH VOLUNTEER FORCE (IVF)

(IVF) was formed in 1913 in hope to promote Home Rule and secure rights in Ireland. This organisation was run by nationalists, Eoin MacNeill established this organisation and was soon promoted as Chief-Of-Staff.

MacNeill wanted peace to be kept and played no part in the violent 1916 rising and even tried to prevent it.

THE ULSTER VOLUNTEER FORCE (UVF)

The Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) was formed in 1913 to try and

prevent Home Rule because they wanted to remain a part of Britain.

The (UVF) was somewhat enemies with (IVF) and both parties had

different aims and were willing to fight to achieve their goals. The (UVF) smuggled ammunition of

25,000 rifles to Ulster. The organisation was weakened when many went to fight for Britain in

World War I.

BEFORE THE RISING

FROM 1845 TO 1847 DURING THE GREAT FAMINE, IRELAND LOST FAITH IN THE ENGLISH GOVERNMENT BECAUSE THEIR ATTEMPTS AT HELPING THE IRISH WERE POOR. TO THE ENGLISH GOVERNMENT IRELAND HAD BECOME SECOND CLASS CITIZENS TO THE WORLDS GREATEST EMPIRE. SO THAT IS WHERE THE HATRED WAS ESTABLISHED IN IRELAND.

RANDOM FACTS• WHEN THE IRB WAS FORMED NOT MANY MEN JOINED THIS ORGANISATION FROM DUBLIN BECAUSE THE FEAR OF WHAT THE ENGLISH SOLDERS WOULD DO TO THE IRISH REBELS WAS TOO GREAT.

• THE IRB CONTAINED 2000 MEMBERS, ALL MEN THAT SIGNED THE 1916 PROCLAMATION WERE THEN MEMBERS OF THE IRB.

• THE IRB’S MONEY SOURCES CAME FROM SOME IRB LEADERS AND IRISH AMERICANS FROM OVER SEAS.
