Home News The Island Thursday 30th December, 2010 7 Janata Party presi- dent Subramanian Swamy on Tuesday demanded that the Union government set up a Commission of Inquiry into India’s role in the 2008-09 anti-LTTE terrorist operations in Sri Lanka and its national security impli- cations. The UPA govern- ment’s refusal to pro- vide heavy artillery and air force support for the Sri Lanka operation against the LTTE had enabled Pakistan to set up a base in the island by providing the requested military assistance, he alleged. Dr. Swamy said that his party would work for the defeat of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in the com- ing Assembly elections. He told a press confer- ence here that the polit- ical affairs committee of the State unit would meet in Madurai on January 18. The party would contest more seats on the plank of combating corruption, he added. He expressed appre- hension that the elec- tion would see a num- ber of empty promises, including free houses for all. “Whether these promises would be translated into reality, no one knows.” Dr. Swamy also announced that he would move the court if all the allotments of house sites and flats/houses made under the government discretionary quota were not cancelled by Pongal. “This scam is as big as that of Adarsh Housing Society scan- dal of Mumbai.” (The Hindu) Probe India’s refusal to help in anti-LTTE operations – Swamy Proprietor of Calton Sweet House (Pvt) Limited Deshamanya D. Addressing the media, at the Government Information Department, the President’s Counsel said that the PUCSL wanted the CEB to breakeven at least by 2015. De Costa said that the CEB couldn’t continue to provide diesel at sub- sidized rate and a revision of power tar- iffs was necessary. Although the CEB had expected addi- tional revenue of about Rs. 24 billion from the tariff increase proposed earlier, it would now have to be content with only Rs.12 billion due a decision to impose an eight per cent increase for those who con- sumed above 120 units a month, the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) said. Earlier the PUCSL pro- posed to impose the hike for those using above 90 units a month. De Costa said the decision to accom- modate those who used 120 units a month in a relief package would deprive the CEB of about Rs. 400 million. The PUCSL, after much deliberation, public hearings and consultation with consumers, private power suppliers and industrialists, suggested to the govern- ment a tariff increase of 8% for con- sumers who use more than 90 units a month. However, President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Tuesday directed the PUCSL/Power Ministry to provide relief to those using 120 units a month.
