Public Utility Commission of SriLanka (PUCSL) Chairman Dr. JayatissaDe Costa on Wednesday (Dec 12) said thattheir primary aim was to provide relief tothe debt-ridden CEB.
Addressing the media, at theGovernment Information Department, the President’s Counsel said that thePUCSL wanted the CEB to breakeven atleast by 2015. De Costa said that the CEBcouldn’t continue to provide diesel at sub-sidized rate and a revision of power tar-iffs was necessary.
Although the CEB had expected addi-tional revenue of about Rs. 24 billionfrom the tariff increase proposed earlier,it would now have to be content with onlyRs.12 billion due a decision to impose aneight per cent increase for those who con-
sumed above 120 units a month, thePublic Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka(PUCSL) said. Earlier the PUCSL pro-posed to impose the hike for those usingabove 90 units a month.
De Costa said the decision to accom-modate those who used 120 units a monthin a relief package would deprive theCEB of about Rs. 400 million.
The PUCSL, after much deliberation, public hearings and consultation with
consumers, private power suppliers andindustrialists, suggested to the govern-ment a tariff increase of 8% for con-sumers who use more than 90 units amonth. However, President MahindaRajapaksa on Tuesday directed thePUCSL/Power Ministry to provide reliefto those using 120 units a month.
With effect from January those con-suming 30 units a month would becharged Rs 120. See chart for rates.
