During the opening ceremony, the Saudi Minister of Economy & Planning HE Dr. Mohamed Al Jasser gave a speech on investment opportunities in oil sectors. He also reviewed unemployment and Saudi expenditure priorities in development and investment projects. Then, the President of Saudi Aramco, HE Khalid Al Faleh, gave a speech in which he hailed Bapco’s role in supporting the oil industry in the region. He said Bapco is one of the major buyers of Saudi crude oil and that it purchases 225,000 barrels of crude oil daily from Aramco. He also lauded the efforts of Saudi Arabia in promoting the oil industry. The opening sessions included several presentations by a number of major speakers. The conference featured keynote and plenary sessions which assemble high profile executives and technical experts from refining and marketing organisations worldwide, as well as representatives from associated industries, who address current issues of widespread importance to the refining industry. The performance targets and ongoing progress as well as the Modernisation Programme were reviewed and directives were given. The Annual General Assembly was chaired by Shaikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa after the Board Meeting and adopted the 2013 Audited Financial Statements and regular items on its annual agenda. Management and employees were thanked for the continued good operating results in the first quarter of 2013 and for their excellent contributions to the ongoing success of the company. Bahrain’s Deputy Prime Minister HH Shaikh Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa visited Bapco’s stand at the 9th Middle East International Refining & Petrochemicals Conference & Exhibition (Petrotech 2014). Bapco has recently sponsored the Second Border & Coastguards Week which was held under the theme, “Maritime and Land Environment Safety”, as part of its continued commitment to supporting the social sector in the Kingdom of Bahrain. As part of the sponsorship, Colonel Abdulrahman Juma, Commander of Muharraq Coastguard Base and Colonel Yousif Subai’i, Coastguard Command were recently received at Bapco in Awali for the sponsorship cheque presentation, where they met with Bapco’s Acting Deputy Chief Executive (Refining & Marketing) Mr. Khalid Al Sabbagh, and Bapco’s Acting Manager-Public Relations, Mr. Ali Yacoub Al Meftah. Commenting on this occasion, Mr. Al Sabbagh expressed Bapco’s pride in the participation in this key event which reflects Bapco’s role as a key contributor to the social development of the Kingdom. The Coastguard Week activities

were held at various locations in Bahrain like Dry Dock, Bilaj Al Jazair, Amwaj and the Bahrain City Centre. The event is a key initiative by the Bahrain Coastguard as it aims to promote environmental awareness to protect human lives and marine resources in the kingdom.

As Part of Its Efforts to Enhance Environment Awareness Bapco Sponsors Border & Coastguards Week

A number of Bapco employees were recently awarded as part of the Kingdom of Bahrain’s celebrations on the occasion of International Labour Day. The endeavour was held to mark this key international event under the kind patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, who delegated Bahrain’s Minister of Labour, HE Mr. Jameel Humaidan to attend two key functions; one held at the Crowne Plaza and organised by the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions, and the other at the Gulf Hotel by the Bahrain Free Labour Unions Federation, both of which were organised to award over 300 outstanding employees from the private sector. The events were attended by key representatives and senior executives of companies operating in Bahrain. Also present was Bapco’s Acting Chief Executive, Mr. Khalid Sabbagh as well

as senior officials from the company’s Human Resources & Administration Division. On this occasion, Mr. Sabbagh expressed Bapco’s pride in having a number of its employees from various divisions and departments awarded at the events, in recognition of their continuous support of the country and of Bapco. He also underlined the continued support of the Bapco Management in appreciating the contributions of its employees in fostering the national growth of the Kingdom. Mr. Sabbagh further stressed the significance of the role assumed by national labour in enhancing the growth of the Kingdom through its concerted efforts. At the event, he thanked awardees for their dedicated contributions, hailing the major role assumed by Bapco as a key contributor to the aspired growth of the Kingdom.

Bapco has played an integral role in the development of the Bahraini women. “Supporting women has been part of Bapco’s mission throughout history. After the introduction of female scholarships in the 1960s, Bahraini women have played a pivotal role in the progress of the company”, said Bapco’s’ General Manager HR & Administration, Mr. Ghassan Ali Al-Muhanna. “Large numbers of female students have received Bapco’s educational scholarships, and Bapco has always endeavored in incorporating women into various administrative and technical positions to equip them to flourish in broader disciplines”, he said. “Bapco takes great pride in the fact that we have a wide category of the Bahraini working women at various levels as we have female managers, engineers, supervisors, nurses, specialists and administrators who provide an excellent image of Bahraini women who work hard in serving the goals of the Kingdom and the company, Mr. Ghassan added. “Additionally, Bapco provides them with constant training to polish their skills and knowledge. We also make high notes on the celebrations marking

the Bahraini Woman Day in line with the directives of the Supreme Council for Women towards enhancing the role of women in fulfilling the needs of growth in the Kingdom”, he continued. “Bapco’s support for women does not stop at this level. We provide key support to women in the athletic field. Female athletes of Bapco have assumed pioneering roles in fostering sports activities in the Kingdom and continue to set the trend for other organizations nationwide owing to Bapco’s limitless encouragement”. ”Bapco’s support for women is an ongoing process in appreciation of her key role as a vital partner of the national progress and a major contributor of the future generations of the Kingdom”, Mr. Al-Muhanna concluded

In its dedicated pursuit of striving for excellence, the Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco) has made yet another significant achievement for the successful implementation of its Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) Project. Bapco’s WWTP Project won the “MEED Quality Project of the Year” award. In attendance at the awarding ceremony was Bapco’s Chairman & Acting Chief Executive Mr. Adel Khalil Almoayyed, who received the award on behalf of Bapco in the presence of Bapco’s General Manager – Major Engineering Projects, Mr. Abdul Jabbar Abdul Karim and other key officials at the event. The WWTP facility in Bapco, which was built at a total cost of US$ 120 million as part of Bapco’s continuous environmental initiatives, was launched in December 2013 and treats 4,400 US gallons per minute of refinery wastewater. The four-stage Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) process treats water to industrial re-use standard, meeting very stringent nitrogen and phosphorous discharge limits. As one of the largest Bioreactor systems ever installed in the petrochemicals and refining industry, the plant is an outstanding demonstration of how state-of-the-art treatment technologies

can meet the stringent requirements of environmental regulations with difficult-to-treat wastewater streams. The WWTP Project has catapulted Bapco as well as Bahrain onto the international stage for using innovative technologies in environmental initiatives. It has effectively implemented Bapco’s contracting philosophy to maximize the use of local content in the purchase of goods and services. Bapco’s honour of the “MEED Quality Project of the Year” adds to the company’s recent awarding of the Distinction Award for “Industrial Water Project of the Year” at the Global Water Summit 2014 in Paris, after it was selected out of numerous similar relevant and innovative projects commissioned in 2013 around the world.

Bapco has sponsored the 2nd National Occupational Health & Safety Conference & Exhibition which is being held under the theme “Promoting a Preventive Safety and Health Culture” as part of its dedicated efforts to foster occupational health regionally and internationally. The conference was organised by the Ministry of Labour and the Supreme Committee of Safety and Occupational Health. The event was held over two days under the patronage of HE Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Kingdom at the Gulf Convention Centre. At the event, HE Shaikh Khalid presented the sponsorship trophy to Bapco’s Chairman & Acting Chief

Executive, Mr. Adel Khalil Almoayyed. The conference is held in line with Bapco’s efforts to foster occupational health and safety. It discusses ways to develop health & safety strategies, as well as safety management and its local requirements. The exhibition displays products & commercial activities of sponsors and local and regional companies & institutions, in addition to agencies related to occupational safety. It also displays means of measuring the working environment, safety equipment in mechanical tools as well as personal protective equipment, smoke detectors, and training programmes in occupational health and safety.

4th Kids’ Art Activity Winners AwardedBapco recently held an awarding ceremony for winners of its 4th Annual Kids’ Art Activity at the Bapco Club ballroom on Wednesday, 30 April, 2014. In attendance at the ceremony were Bapco’s Acting Chief Executive, Mr. Khalid Sabbagh and Acting Deputy Chief Executive, Mr. Ghassan Al Muhanna, who presented the winning artists with prizes and certificates of appreciation. A total of 30 winning entries were selected from over 400 artworks submitted on the theme, “My Dream Job”. A SHEQ moment was also delivered by

Richard Caroll, from Bapco’s Fire, Health & Safety department. The fourth edition of Bapco’s Annual Kids’ Art Activity was held at the Princess Sabeeka Park in Awali on 22 March, 2014 and witnessed the enthusiastic participation of hundreds of young artists. The Activity is an annual event held to encourage the participation of children of Bapco employees, and showcase their artistic talents which is in line with Bapco’s concerted efforts exerted to nurture artistic talent in the Kingdom.

Petrotech 2014 includes a top-quality technical conference programme which serves as a major highlight of the event, typically featuring over a hundred technical papers from more than 20 countries. The sessions, which are featured on all three days, include the participation of a number of Bapco employees who are scheduled to deliver informative technical papers to participating industry professionals and all attendees.Bapco’s participating employees include Mr. Vicente Espina, Energy Coordinator from the company’s Power & Utilities department, whose paper themed “Technology Transfer and Utilisation on Newly Commissioned Waste Water Treatment Plant” focuses on the state-of-the -art four-stage Membrane Bio Reactor (MBR) technology, which has been

applied in Bapco’s newly commissioned award-winning Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) which provides secondary biological treatment to refinery waste water. Also scheduled to present a paper was Mr. Atil Gurhan, Reliability Specialist, whose paper discussed how corrosion has caused premature pump coupling failure. The paper explains details of the problem and the methodology used to determine its physical and root causes. It will also talk about the recommendations made to avoid recurrences without sacrificing frequency and effectiveness of performance tests, among other aspects. Mr. Maruti Prasad, Process Specialist from Bapco’s Hydrocracking Group is also delivering a paper on the Hydrocracker Product Stripper’s revamp which has been done for increased reliability. The paper will share detailed findings and experience with the Product Stripper performance, the need to improve reliability, achieve design catalyst run length and prevent financial losses. It also covers the background to the company’s decision to replace the top bed packing with trays, the process and mechanical challenges faced with the internal design and the installation, as well as the overall logistics involved.

In line with its ongoing commitment towards fostering a multicultural attitude and as a key player on the national arena, Bapco recently participated with a company stand at the “This is Bahrain” Exhibition organised by the Bahrain Federation of Expatriate Associations. The event, which was held on 16 May, 2014 at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in London, United Kingdom, catered to various clubs and associations in Bahrain, who attended the event with the aim of promoting and celebrating the cultural diversity present in Bahrain. “Delegates from the various clubs who had travelled to the event from different countries around the world discussed and highlighted

Bahrain’s multiculturalism which allows people of different backgrounds to co-exist peacefully in the Kingdom”, said Bapco’s General Manager Human Resources & Administration, Mr. Ghassan Ali Al-Muhanna. Following the exhibition, a panel discussion was held and its members contributed their views and opinions on the subject. “Bapco’s participation is also in line with its belief in multiculturalism as an effective tool in combining several civilisations and cultures to embody a single entity that works in a dynamic harmonious attitude based on mutual respect and positive participation towards achieving the best interests of the Kingdom, Mr. Al-Muhanna concluded.

Bapco Receives National Guard Delegates

Doug Lipp Visits Bapco to Handover Archive Material

Bapco recently received a number of delegates from the National Guard. The delegates were given a presentation by the company’s departments on Bapco’s activities, achievements, and major projects. They were also given a presentation by Bapco’s Fire, Health & Safety (FHS) department on FHS’s scope of activities. The delegates were then taken on a tour of the Refinery fire station and introduced to Bapco’s firefighting equipment and its capabilities. They

were also taken on a bus tour of the Refinery to visit the main units of the company. At the end of the visit, the delegates thanked Bapco for organising the visit and hailed the company’s contributions to the Kingdom. The visit is part of Bapco’s committed efforts in the field of corporate social responsibility (CSR), and in line with its keen desire to foster relations with the various civil and national institutions of the Kingdom.

Bapco hosted on Wednesday and Thursday (7 & 8 May, 2014) Mr. Doug Lipp, his wife Pam and his son Keith, who visited Bahrain and Bapco from the United States to donate various photographs and documents to the company archive from Milton Lipp’s family collection. Mr. Milton Lipp, Doug’s grandfather, worked in Bapco during the days when #1 & 2 Crude Units were built and he was the first Refinery Manager and subsequently the Resident Vice President. Mr. Doug Lipp donated a rare collection of old photos and materials dating back to the early days of Bapco. Mr. Lipp handed over a copy of the archival materials to Bapco, which are of great historical value to the company and the Kingdom. The official handover ceremony took place on Thursday, 8 May 2014 at the Bapco Club. As part of his trip to Bapco, Mr. Doug Lipp, a senior executive at the Disney Corporation gave a presentation on “EHS in Disney and its possible commonality with the oil & gas industry”. The presentation was also held at the Bapco Club.At the presentation ceremony, Bapco’s Chairman & Acting Chief Executive, Mr. Adel Khalil Almoayyed welcomed the Lipp family, hailing their initiative and their contribution to Bapco’s archive. “We have the pleasure of welcoming today Mr. Doug Lipp, his wife Pam and his son Keith, who have travelled to Bahrain all the way from

the United States to share with us a piece of Bapco’s rich and varied history”, said Mr. Almoayyed. Commenting further on Doug’s grandfather, Mr. Almoayyed continued “Your grandfather, Mr. Milton Lipp, was part of a distinguished group of Bapco’s senior figures, who played an active role in building and propelling forward an organisation which has grown to become a household name in our lovely kingdom and a regional dynamo on the energy scene today. His prominent role and involvement in Bapco, from the time our Refinery was inaugurated through to his retirement as Resident Vice-President of the company in 1960 has left a mark that Bapco is certainly proud of today.”At the conclusion of the presentation ceremony, Mr. Almoayyed thanked the Lipp family for their visit and their valuable contribution, and wished them all the best for their future and a safe journey back to the United States.

Bapco has recently hosted a group of students from the East Riffa School for Boys. As part of the visit, the students met with Bapco’s Chairman and Acting Chief Executive, Mr. Adel Khalil Almoayyed, and presented to him a brief description of their project titled “Nakheel Bahrain Company”, which had commenced in December 2013 at the school’s premises. Following their presentation, Mr. Almoayyed hailed the students’ initiative, as well as the role played by INJAZ Bahrain in supporting young learners in the kingdom. He further shared his own experiences and provided valuable advice on building and sustaining a successful venture, taking Bapco’s own achievements as a key example. In April

2014, the students visited the Al Kamel and Al Jasser factories for traditional water, and discussed the business with the factory administration which provided them a valuable insight into the functioning of the companies. The students have been sponsored by Bapco to participate in the “Company” competition, which is scheduled to be held on May 20 and 21, 2014 at the Regency Intercontinental hotel in Manama. The students’ visit is in line with the INJAZ Bahrain “Company” programme, which aims to develop the skills of the national cadres, and support the youth of Bahrain. Present was Bapco’s Sales Coordinator – Marketing Division, Mr. Mohamed Saad Al Huwaihi.

Bapco has recently issued the company’s Annual Review for 2013. The review has been published this year under the theme “Building a Sustainable Business”, and highlights the company’s achievements made over 2013. Aside from the company’s operational and marketing highlights, the review also gives the reader a comprehensive insight into the organisation’s refining and upstream performance. Bapco’s Security department held a farewell party for a number of its retiring employees on Tuesday, 29 April 2014, who retired after their long service with the company. Following is the list of retirees who bid farewell to the company:1. Sultan Salem Abdulla A.Latif Al-Rowaiei, who joined Bapco on 9/10/1976 and served the company for a period of 37 years and 3 months. He joined Bapco as a Craftsman – Metal Trades in the Maintenance shops and was transferred to the Security Department on 21 May, 1988 to work as a Security Officer.2. Ebrahim A. Rahman Hasan Zainal, who joined Bapco on 17 November, 1976 and served the company for 37 years and 6 months. He too joined as Craftsman – Metal Trades in the Maintenance shop Department and was transferred to Security on 23/1/1988 as a Security Officer.3. Khalil Hussain Akbar Abbas, who joined Bapco on 23/4/1977 as Craftsman/Carpenter in Awali Services

department and was transferred to Security on 23/1/1988 to work as Security Officer and then Telephone Operator.4. Ali Abdul Ameer Abdulla Al Bari – he joined Bapco on 13/3/1982 and went on to work for 32 years and one month in the company. He joined as Public Health Operator in the Medical Department and was transferred to the Security Department on 22/12/1984 to work as Security Officer.5. Abdul Aziz Ali Abdulla Ishaq; he worked in Bapco from 28/6/1980 for 33 years and 10 months. Abdul joined Bapco on 28/6/1980 as Craftsman/Welder in the Maintenance Shops Department and was transferred to Security department on 18/5/1985 to work as Security Officer. In September 1999, he was promoted to Area Security Officer.

In addition to the above retirees, Bapco’s General Manager - HR & Administration also recognized several employees from the Security Department who have performed their duties outstandingly, as follows:1. Mohamed Al Rowaie and Hamad Eid: Both officers noticed a fire in the front yard of House No. 853 (tree leaves in the garden). They reacted quickly and extinguished the rapidly-spreading fire. Their quick response averted a potentially catastrophic fire that could have engulfed the entire house.2. Hassan Awadhi, Hamad Zayed & Hisham Abdulla: These officers responded to a garden hedge fire at House No. 554. Their fast response prevented a fast-moving fire that could have spread to the two adjoining houses.

3. Adel Abbas: While patrolling the refinery area, he discovered that an unauthorised excavation was made by a contractor, which ran under the Security fence at the Refinery area. He immediately stopped the contractor work and withdrew the PTW. His action prevented further breach of the fence which could have exposed the area unprotected.4. Hameed Ahmed Ghulam: He discovered a diesel overflow at the Refinery Tank Farm. He immediately reported this incident to the concerned parties in the company, which prevented contamination to the environment and hazards to property and personnel.5. Faisal Abbas: He dedicated over one year of his time to enhance the Security Department Team Site, which is located on the Bapco Portal. He took the initiative to further improve the Site, which has been stagnant for years and turned the site into an effective and user-friendly system. His tireless efforts resulted in the department’s enhanced work efficiency and productivity.6. Qais Hadi from Secure Services: He discovered a fire in a private car near Sitra Tank Farm. He took the initiative and immediately extinguished the fire. His actions prevented further damage to property and possible injuries to people around the area. 7. Isa Salman: While conducting routine patrol around the Transfer Lines, he discovered diesel leak coming out of a pipe leading to the Sitra Tank Farm. He immediately reported the leak, which was secured right away, preventing a major spill that could have polluted the Wet Gap and the nearby Ma’ameer community.

The fifth Institute of Leadership and Management Level 2 Certificate presentation took place in the Bapco club ballroom on 18.5.14. Certificates were presented to 18 Supervisors who had completed the ILM Level 2 certificate in Leadership and team skills in the past year. The framed ILM certificates were presented by Saeed Alnasheet, the External Verifier for the Institute of Leadership and Management in Bahrain. Mohammed Hussain, Manager, Human Resources welcomed the guests and congratulated the graduates on completing the programme. Saeed presented each delegate with their framed certificate and ILM lapel badge and they had their photograph taken. Finally course leader, Senior Management Development Specialist Neil Porter thanked everyone involved in making the programme a success. In particular Neil thanked

Safety Alert

Road Tanker AccidentBapco held its EHSC meeting for the month of May 2014, where the following issues were discussed:• There were three lost time injuries during April 2014, bringing the total number of lost time injures this year to six. In addition, there was 1 First Aid injury during April 2014. The EHSC held an extra ordinary meeting on 15th April 2014 to review all the lost time injuries and identify corrective measures needed to reverse this recent trend in lost time injuries. I highlighted this in the safety message which was issued to all Bapco and contractor employees on 24th April 2014.• The EHSC re-iterated the use of all the tools available to us such as the 4 Keys to Safety, Osool Bapco and Stop Work Authority (SWA). The LTI’s during April 2014 are being investigated and lessons learnt will be shared amongst all employees. In addition, the EHSC has requested all senior staff to devote more time to visit different departments in order to discuss EHS related issues and where necessary take appropriate actions to prevent all injuries, process safety and environmental incidents.• There were 10 road traffic accidents out of which 8 involved Bapco drivers and 2 contractor drivers. Although, 7 of these accidents were not due to fault of Bapco drivers, we need to continue with our efforts to reduce the number of vehicle accidents.• 34 minor Process Incidents of which 17 have been PSE tiered were recorded during April 2014. YTD there have been 153 process safety related incidents out of which

only 1 has been classified as Bapco significant incident.• The Environmental Performance Index (EPI) is 3.8 versus the target of 7. There was one minor oil spill in the wet gap area linking the Refinery and Sitra Tank Farm. The spill occurred due to a pinhole leak in the diesel transfer line from the Bapco Refinery to the Sitra Tank Farm. Upon receiving the notification Bapco immediately activated its Oil Spill Contingency Plan and the affected pipeline was quickly isolated and clamped to prevent any further spillage of diesel to the sea. A cleanup of the beach to absorb the resulting oil sheen was also carried out. A detailed incident investigation is currently underway to identify the root causes and the actions needed to prevent recurrence.• The new Biological Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) has won the MEED Awards under the categories of the “Sustainable Project of the Year” and the “Quality Project of the Year”. The awards were presented to Bapco at a recent ceremony held in Dubai. Well done to MEP for these tremendous achievements.• Finally congratulations to all on achieving 1 million Bapco & Contractors employee-hours without a lot time injury (LTI) on 11th May 2014. However, in order to achieve our next target of reaching 3 million hours without an LTI by mid-July this year, we must remain focused to prevent all injuries by deploying the 4 keys to safety, Osool Bapco and Stop Work Authority (SWA) by integrating these tools into our daily activities and core business.

GENERAL INFORMATIONLocation: Um Sa’ad Roundabout Nature of Incident: Road accident Date of Incident: 4 May 2014INCIDENT DESCRIPTIONAt around 11:35am, tanker BN324 was on its way to provide fuel to a service station. The tanker was on the right lane of the road and there were no other vehicles on the left side when it tanker entered the roundabout. A Bapco saloon car entered the roundabout on the left lane. While the tanker was being maneuvered, the rear tyre hit the front side of the saloon car causing damage to the front bumper and lights. No damages were reported to the tanker and the accident was reported to the Traffic Police and to Bapco Security. No one was injured.EARLY LEARNING POINTSWhen turning or changing lanes, always check the side mirrors AND look to both sides of the road to ensure a safe turn. • When following a heavy vehicle, keep a safe distance for the heavy vehicle’s maneuverability. • OSOOL Bapco #7: Always comply with all applicable laws and regulations. • OSOOL Bapco #8: Always address abnormal conditions and never let them become accepted as normal. IMMEDIATE ACTIONSThe accident was immediately reported to Bapco Security, the Maintenance team and Traffic Directorate. Spondylosis is a medical term which refers to the degenerative osteoarthritis of the joints between the centres of the spinal vertebrae. It is a condition that is becoming growingly prevalent these days due to the continuous use of electronic devices like mobile phones, tablet computers and so on. Undue stress on the spine, incorrect posture, poor nutrition and inadequate rest are all contributing factors to cervical spondylosis. Although common among older people, spondylosis is occuring among younger people these days due to unhealthy ergonomic habits. When spondylosis gets severe, it usually causes pressure on the nerve roots which is accompanied by sensory and motor disturbances such as pain, paresthesia, or muscle weakness.When the intervertebral space between two vertebrae narrows, a nerve root emerging from the spinal cord gets compressed causing severe pain in the neck, shoulder, arm, back and leg as well as muscle weakness. Less commonly, direct pressure on the spinal cord, especially in the neck area, may cause symptoms like weakness, loss of balance, and loss of bowel or bladder control. The patient may also suffer shocks (paresthesia) in hands and legs because of nerve compression and lack of blood flow.The following are a few general tips that can help you keep spondylosis at bay:• Exercise: Developing a regular fitness routine can help you keep your spine and joints flexible and healthy. A combination of aerobic training and light resistance training can help you keep your back strong and supple.• Maintain a healthy weight: The extra pounds put added pressure on your joints, which accelerates the wear and tear process.

Shedding extra weight and strengthening your muscles can help keep your back healthy.• Watch your diet: Eliminate processed foods as much as possible, and build your daily intake on natural foods like vegetables, fruits and whole grains. • Take a break: If you’re a software engineer or a graphic designer, chances are that you spend half your day at your computer. The occasional stretch and walk around the office can give your back a chance to relieve itself of the pressure, so make sure you move around every 45 minutes to an hour. Develop good posture: Sitting or standing correctly promotes good back health.• Ergonomics: A lot of times, your neck suffers wear and tear due to bad posture. In celebration of the Kingdom of Bahrain’s 5th immunisation week held from 24 – 30 April 2014, the Awali Hospital held a series of activities which included a lecture on this year’s World Health Organisation theme, “are you up to date?’. The lecture was given by Linda Devereux, Supervisor of the out-patient department in Awali Hospital. Mrs. Devereux stated that we should be diligent about ensuring that our families as well as ourselves are up to date with the recommended immunisations in Bahrain. Health care workers in particular, need to ensure that those immunisations recommended by the Ministry of Health are complied with, to not only protect themselves but also to prevent the passing on of diseases to families and others. Those people in a high risk group that suffer with chronic problems such as diabetes, sickle-cell disease, heart problems etc. also need to be vigilant in ensuring that their immunisations are up to date, as complications from acquired diseases can be much

more severe.The Vaccination Clinic at Awali Hospital administers immunisations for infants, children and adults, and advises on travel immunisations as well. We’re all accustomed to consuming processed foods due to our lifestyles today, but once you learn more about how these foods affect your health drastically, you will be encouraged to make healthier choices. While descending from his vehicle, he stumbled and fell down. In a quick response, he used his left arm to protect his face. The fall caused a fracture in his left arm’s upper bone as he landed with

Vitamin D - and How it Affects our HealthDr Syed RazaMD, FRCP, CCT (UK), FACCConsultant Cardiologist, Bapco

Despite the fact that this is a part of the world which is blessed and basking in sun, I am pretty surprised to see how big the prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency is. When I moved to Bahrain about 18 months ago, I thought Vitamin D deficiency was only a problem of the West but gradually I realized I was wrong. The more I tested for the level of Vitamin D in my patients’ blood, more the surprises I got. Despite the sun being the richest source of Vitamin D (at least 90% of the Vitamin D is obtained from adequate exposure to the sun), the greatest irony is that a large population in this part of the world is lacking in Vitamin D.Patients who are deficient in Vitamin D can present with a wide array of symptoms and most of them are non-specific as they don’t point towards a definite system of body or diagnosis. Amongst these, I commonly encounter patients in my clinic who present with chest pain which sometimes turns out to be non-cardiac. These patients on further assessment seem to have more of musculo-skeletal type of pain. I conducted an audit on these patients over a period of one year and collated the results of my findings. I checked for Vitamin D level in blood sample of these patients and I saw a significant number (almost 50%) of them to be deficient of the same and some to a dangerously low level. I prescribed vitamin D supplements in adequate dosage to these patients and followed them up in my clinic. I saw a large majority of these patients showed improvement in their symptoms or they were completely rid of their symptoms.I was invited to present the results of my work at the World Congress of Cardiology recently in Melbourne, Australia. On literature search, I have found that till date a similar study has not been conducted or researched. However, there are some studies that have shown an increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease. Research also suggests that Vitamin D could play a role in the prevention and treatment of a number of different conditions, including Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension, glucose intolerance and multiple sclerosis.Vitamin D until recently was thought to affect teeth and bone health only. However, it is now being recognized that it can affect virtually every organ of the body. Some of the symptoms that patients with low Vitamin D may present are:Bone PainMuscle PainTiredness and lack of energyLack of concentrationProblems with memoryPoor sleep

Causes of Vitamin D deficiencyVitamin D deficiency can occur for a number of reasons:Lack of consumption of recommended levels of the vitamin over time: This is likely if you follow a strict vegetarian diet, because most of the natural sources are animal-based, including fish and fish oils, egg yolks, cheese, fortified milk and beef liver.Limited exposure to sunlight: Because the body makes Vitamin D over time when your skin is exposed to sunlight, you may be at risk of deficiency if you are homebound, live in northern latitudes, wear long robes or head coverings for religious reasons, or have an occupation that prevents sun exposure.Having dark skin: The pigment melanin reduces the skin’s ability to make Vitamin D in response to sunlight exposure. Some studies show that older adults with darker skin are at high risk of vitamin D deficiency.Kidneys cannot convert vitamin D to its active form: As people age, their kidneys are less able to convert Vitamin D to its active form, thus increasing the risk of vitamin D deficiency.Digestive tract cannot adequately absorb vitamin D: Certain medical problems, including Crohn’s disease, cystic fibrosis, and Coeliac disease, can affect your intestine’s ability to absorb vitamin D from the food you eat.Obesity: Vitamin D is extracted from the blood by fat cells, altering its release into the circulation. People with a body mass index of 30 or greater often have low blood levels of Vitamin D.It may be your genes: From my personal experience, I have observed significantly low levels of Vitamin D even in some patients who are exposed to sun for long hours every day during work. It is now well known that it all depends on how your body produces Vitamin D which again is dependent on your genes.Tests for Vitamin D deficiencyThe most accurate way to measure how much Vitamin D is in your body is the 25-hydroxy Vitamin D blood test. A level of 50 Nano grams/milliliter to 250 ng/ml is considered adequate for healthy people. A level less than 25 ng/ml indicates vitamin D deficiency, whereas a level between 25 mg/ml and 50 ng/ml is considered insufficient.Treatment for Vitamin D deficiency1. If the vitamin D level is significantly low, it is prescribed in the form of capsules with or without calcium tablets.2. Supplements and food that contain a high amount of vitamin D3. Adequate exposure to sun: Minimum of 20 minutes of direct exposure to sunlight preferably uncovered and without sunscreen. If you don’t spend much time in the sun or always are careful to cover your skin (sunscreen inhibits Vitamin D production), you should speak to your doctor about taking a Vitamin D supplement, particularly if you have risk factors for Vitamin D deficiency.

Periodic communication meetings, in addition to management meetings are a good way to ensure that the work team is communicating effectively. When employees clearly know what is expected of them, they will feel inspired, motivated and will perform better. Listening to other employees: This cannot be stressed enough. Communication is a two-way street and talking issues over with your staff when productivity plummets is highly useful. If higher-level employees are not concerned about the details of what goes on in their workplace, employee morale is often one of the things that go unnoticed. Ongoing employee feedback will help supervisors identify morale issues such as being overlooked. Acknowledging the stresses and circumstances that your employees are feeling will help boost morale and increase productivity. Celebrating accomplishments: It is important to make employees and their efforts feel valued, and that their contributions are more than just a job. Every employee wants to feel important to the organisation and this is one of the best ways to spur higher productivity and motivate

your employees. Your employees will often put in extra effort in their duties to meet your expectations and earn your appreciation. Taking the time to reflect upon these efforts helps employees see that you believe in them and their efforts. Although a single aspect may not be able to turn around the morale in your organisation or department, it is important to remember that little things do add up. Acknowledge any overall tension or job dissatisfaction among your employees and colleagues. Those who feel appreciated, respected, and valued will increase the overall morale of your company and consequently, its productivity.

Bapco Celebrates Second Anniversary of Sadeem Fuel Service

Bapco has recently celebrated the second anniversary of the launch of the Sadeem smart fuel card service, which was launched nationwide in May 2012. The initiative was part of Bapco’s continued efforts to meet the needs and requirements of its clients. Over the past two years, Bapco’s Card Business Unit (CBU) has issued over 50,000 cards, and the service is now available at 17 stations in the kingdom. The CBU is scheduled to launch an awareness campaign at the City Center form 21-28th May 2014 to spread awareness of Sadeem Card and to measure customer feedback, in addition to conducting a Go Green campaign which already started at the beginning of May 2014, and will continue for at least 6 months, for collecting expired cards. Bapco aspires to issue 80,000 Sadeem cards which will be made available at 35 stations in Bahrain by the end of 2014. The service is a uniquely convenient electronic method of payment for fuel, serving both corporate and individual segments. The Sadeem card service has garnered great popularity owing to its capability to be used as a substitute

to cash payments and fuel vouchers and has been overwhelmingly preferred by customers due to its efficiency, effectiveness, safety and convenience as a fuel payment service.

Market Highlights:1. Saudi Aramco is expected to cut its official selling prices (OSPs) for Arab Medium and Heavy grades in June after fuel oil cracks weakened over the last month; a Reuters’ survey of five refiners and traders showed last Friday. The OSP for Arab Medium could fall by about 30 cents/bbl, while that for Arab Heavy is expected to drop between 10 and 70 cents/bbl. The OSP for Arab Light is likely to be little changed while the Arab Extra Light is expected to receive a boost from a 10% rise in naphtha cracks in April from March.2. All Satorp refining and petrochemicals units are now operational; full production is expected by mid-year, JV partner Total says. 3. Saudi Aramco and Sinopec aim to begin commissioning Yasref refinery in May and to process first crude in September. Arabian Light will be used during commissioning, to be replaced by Arabian Heavy once the coker is operational.4. The completion of Takreer’s Ruwais Expansion, configured for Murban crude, is expected at the end of the year. This suggests commercial operation is unlikely before early 2015. There have been reports of delays to the residue fluid catalytic cracker (RFCC ), tank farm and offsites and utilities.5. Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has formed a joint venture with China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) to develop Abu Dhabi’s oil reserves, state news agency said on Tuesday. The Government issued a law setting up Al Yasat Company for Petroleum Operations Limited Liability Company, in which ADNOC will hold a 60% share and CNPC 40%. The JV would involve exploration, drilling and maintenance of wells, construction, operation and maintenance of production facilities, conversion, processing, measurement, storage, transfer and delivery of crude oil in addition to marketing or exporting crude oil. 6. Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company (Orpic) has signed a $2.8 bn loan with a consortium of 21 international and local institutions, the conglomerate said in a statement. The money will be used to fund various Orpic

projects, including the expansion plan for its refinery in the industrial city of Sohar.Local banks in the consortium include Bank Muscat, National Bank of Oman, Bank Dhofar, Al Ahli Bank, Bank Sohar, and Oman Arab Bank.International institutions providing funding are credit export agencies from South Korea and Italy, HSBC, Standard Chartered Bank, Qatar National Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, KFW IPEX Bank, Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, The Saudi National Commercial Bank, National Bank of Abu Dhabi, , Arab Banking Corporation, Arab Petroleum Investment Corporation, Ahli United Bank and Arab Bank.7. UAE-based trading company Gulf Petrochem (GP) has delayed the planned start-up of a products terminal in Pipavav, western India to December. The terminal had initially been scheduled to come on line in May but has been pushed back, possibly because of construction delays. It will have total capacity of 250,000m³ (1.6mn barrels), with tanks able to store a wide range of products from bunker fuel, naphtha and diesel to bitumen, methanol, base oils and vegetable oils. 8. Sinopec Corp has held up a $3.1 bn ethylene plant in east China’s Qingdao, after a fatal pipeline blast last year threw into question whether the city is environmentally viable for the petrochemical complex, a company source said last Monday. The delay on the project also comes amid concerns about demand growth in China’s petrochemical sector and new competition from U.S. shale gas crackers. Sinopec’s Qingdao ethylene plant was to be its first designed to use natural gas and LPG as a feedstock.9. Shell will close its 370,000 tons/year base oils unit at the 385,000 b/d Pernis refinery in the Netherlands, the company said last Friday. The closure will take place in two phases during 2015-16. The company declined to specify which grades of base oils are produced at the train that is likely to close first; however it said the unit-which produces lubricant feedstock and waxes- is no longer efficient enough to compete, and that the global outlook for base oils is too weak to warrant the investment required to upgrade it.

10. The $3mn EU funded Solar Jet project has produced first ever “solar” jet fuel from water and CO2 using sunlight as a source of energy. Simulated sunlight was used to convert CO2 and water into synthesis gas (syngas) in a high temperature solar reactor. The syngas produced was then turned into jet fuel by Shell using the Fischer-Tropsch process. The partners are now looking to optimize the solar reactor and find out if the technology can work on a large scale, while being cost competitive. Further gains were tempered by bearish oil demand signals out of the U.S. coupled with the impending return of more Libyan exports.The overall w-o-w gain for Brent however was due to the intensified tensions in Ukraine; stoking fears of energy supply disruptions from the region.The Middle East sour crude market continued to be weighed down by an overhang of light sour barrels for June loading.

The performance year got off to a good start with the Business Plan being published on the Bapco portal in February and the acting CE’s PMP following soon after that.This has been the start of the second cycle of our newly implemented Performance Management Process (PMP) which is a ‘top down’ approach, with General Managers, Managers, Superintendents and Supervisors cascading their objectives to their direct reports so that all employees are aligned with the aims of Bapco in 2014.As the GM HR & Admin, Mr Ghassan Muhanna has said “when objectives are written and agreed upon, there is focus on achieving these plans and everyone works towards the common goal – knowing what is expected of them and being held accountable

for it”.As we approach mid-year, employees will be preparing for their mid year review which is due to take place June/July. This is a time for supervisors to monitor and give feedback on progress made and to assist and/or make any adjustments to the objectives, if necessary.Responses from the recent survey have been both positive and constructive with employees giving their views on the process so far and suggesting improvements. These responses will be summarised and presented to management for comment and review to make our PMP process even more effective.We look forward to completing another successful business year in Bapco.
