In Italy there are 48 EDCs, mostly situated in universities

Organisation of the network :•a national coordinator•a national vice coordinator •a coordination group (7 EDCs)

The italian EDCs organize an annual meeting with the support of the Representation of the European Commission in Italy.

In the last years we attended to the development of the propelling role of the EDCs at the academic and local level because they achieve a diffusion of the communitarian information and a research support about the European integration process. The EDC’s specific role made that their users are universities and research centres (students, professors, researchers) but this status not prevent that the centres propose initiatives open to the citizenship. In this context the Italian EDCs realized, with the support of EC Italian Representation, network’s projects and activities which are used to distinguish oneself in the Universities and attaint to general public allowing a co-operation with other networks and associations.

We have noticed that only by working together and sharing experiences we are able to:

obtain better results

realize projects which may be interesting to promote our role in the host institutions

Network projects and activities to allow the EDCs to share their practices

A national web site edited by a group of 5 EDCs, with the contribution of all the italians EDCs; the web server is located at the University of Sassari.The aim is to give information about the EU policies, events, masters, courses and seminaries, and give publications access to citizens and public in our own national language

A great part of the EDCs contributes to realize masters, courses and seminars:

courses for the students on the information policy and on the documents right access

data base courses for students, reference librarians and EDCs documentalists.

The experience of the italian EDCs shows:

the importance of the EDCs role may have inside the host institutions. The cooperation between documentalists should be enlarged to the professors who are responsible for the EDC. The aim is to pay attention to the special value of the EDCs inside the universities.
