President’s Message

As summer draws to an end, it signals the official start to our next Junior League year. As you might recall from the last Jabberwock, the theme of this 2018-19 JLB year is "do something today to make tomorrow easier". The board's way of focusing ourselves on this theme is: 1. to work internally on driving our laundry project forward and 2. fundraise in a more sustainable, efficient and mission driven way. We believe a more narrowed, intentional focus on our league projects this year will help to accomplish these two goals. Each council's work will directly impact and feed into these strategic goals.

Fund Development: Will be increasing sponsorship asks to help improve profitability of Marketplace Magic

this year. Asks are more organized and intentional, shared between MPM and the January leadership conference.

Membership: Is continuing the planning of the January women's leadership conference. This conference is intended to represent what we're all about: developing the potential of women. It will raise funds for our league in hopefully a more long term, sustainable way.

Community: This group will be working to research how to best continue our laundry project. Through meeting with community service organization leaders, social services, school district officials, etc. this council will determine how to best serve the need in our community. It is the boards goal to have this accomplished and the wheels turning by June 2020.

Communications: The communications council is the cheerleader of the league, promoting our work and membership all along the way. Having a council concentrated on marketing our league will improve visibility and branding.

See you at our first general membership meeting of the year Sept. 11 at 6:00 p.m. Remember we'll be meeting this year at Rocky Mountain College Morledge Kimball Hall in room 125. Councils will break out into room 231 also.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL The Community Council has started the year off with a BANG! We met on August 1

st and started planning out the year

with our focus being the Laundry Project. It has been determined that we will start a small task force within the council that will narrow its attention on who we are providing the service for and which organizations in the community benefit the most from the service. We will begin by conducting a small survey of some of those organizations local leaders and really see how far our Laundry Project has reached and what kind of impact s it has had going on our third year of service. Hopefully by the end of our league year together we will have a clear path forward for the Laundry Project and what its future holds. We have two Laundry Days tentatively planned at BYO Laundry for September with one being Board sponsored on September 15

th from 10am – 2pm and the other being League sponsored on September 29

th from 10am – 2pm. The

Board felt like kicking the year off together with one as a board team to get the Junior League as a whole excited for our Laundry Project! A sign-up genius email will be sent out once those dates are solidified. As for the community council, we are focusing our volunteering efforts on organizations that align with our Mission Statement this year. We already are planning to help Tumbleweed in October with their annual fundraiser (more to come regarding information on that) and look forward to partnering with many other Billings organizations that focus on homelessness and poverty in our community. This year is already getting busy with upcoming events and I can’t wait to have the entire League involved in our big plans for the year! Cheers! Emily Hoskins Community Council Chair

SUSTAINERS

Reminder: We appreciate each and every one. A big thank you to those who have turned in their donation letter with a donation this fall. There is still time to do that if you have forgotten. Because of you, we will be able to put together some incredible baskets for the luncheon and for Bingo and assist in training for our members. WATCH YOUR MAIL: Invitations will be in the mail soon so be sure to put together a table for Midday at the Mart. It is November 2nd and will be catered by Yellowstone Kelly’s Catering.

MarketPlace Magic is November 2-4, 2018

Volunteering can be an exciting, growing, enjoyable experience. It is truly gratifying to serve a cause, practice one’s ideals, work with people, solve problems, see benefits, and know one had a hand in them. Harriet Naylor

MEMBERSHIP COUNCIL

It’s September and you know what that means. As your kids are dusting off backpacks and trying to get back into the swing of things, it’s important to step back and think about what you would like to accomplish this year. Who can help you out with this? The Junior League of course! Your involvement is what truly makes the JLB successful and fun! Whether it’s attending social events, volunteering or just showing up to the GMMs to say hello, participation is the key to everything. I’ve missed your beautiful faces over the summer and can’t wait to see you back at the GMM. Our Open House last month was a huge success,. I look forward to meeting all of the new members. Thank you to all those who participated and invited some great women to join the League. I am excited to kick off the new member training at the first General Membership meeting. Thank you to Dee Dee Hilton for stepping up and leading the group! Our Montana Women’s Leadership Conference is also kicking into high gear. We are diligently working on securing a site, planning some great workshops and obtaining sponsors. If you would like to help out with the planning, please let me know. Don’t forget the date: January 17, 2019. Christina Rodriquez Membership Council Leader

Remembering our History submitted by Dina Pett

PLAYGROUND FOR ALL CHILDREN

The Playground For All Children is a barrier-free all accessible playground located in Rose Park. The Playground is a League initiated project that was started in 1988. Planning and design was a community collaboration that included experts from the fields of special education, parents of handicapped children. landscape architects, Billings Parks and Recreation Department and Junior League members. What began as an area of community need at committee level evolved into a multi- phase, five year project that culminated in presenting to the City of Billings the first all accessible playground in a municipal park in the state of Montana in May of 1993. Fund-raising for the Playground took many forms for Junior League members. In 1990 members produced the first Follies held in more than 20 years. The production turned over more than $18,000 for the Playground. The League also stepped boldly into the community collaboration venue and organized a major fund-raising campaign. Members made over 40 presentations to local businesses and other service organizations about the Playground. The League also took advantage of area grant opportunities. Phase I of the Playground was dedicated in June of 1990. Phase II was dedicated in May of 1993. Total costs for both phases were over $80,000.00. Our League was cited for the Playground project at the Association level in 1993 in an article celebrating "Volunteers in a New Light" in the Junior League Review. The project is listed in the Association Centennial Cookbook along with the Tumbleweed Runaway Program and Youth Court Conference Committee as a "Project of Distinction". The Junior League has provided information about the Playground to other Leagues around the country as they research similar projects for their communities. The Playground is a one of a kind gift to all the children of Billings and the surrounding area. It truly provides a place where all children regardless of ability can come together to play. It represents a successful collaboration between the Junior League, the City of

Billings, numerous area organizations, individuals and businesses.
