A group of interested citizens met February 26, 2008 at Culpepper & Carroll Law office

in Jonesboro, Louisiana to formulate plans for a Jackson Parish Sports Hall of Fame.

The meeting was organized by Henry Kimp of North Hodge, Louisiana, who had this

dream for some time, and he served as President and Chairman of the Board of Directors through

2010.

Other charter members were Bobby L. Culpepper, as Vice President; Raymond Jeffress

as Public Relations Chair; Bishop Kelvin Stewart as Finance Chairman; with Buster Cotton, Ira

Reeves, Robert Greer, Leslie Thompson, and Nathaniel Belton as Board Members. Before the

first year was out, Angela Lee was added as Secretary/Treasurer.

Six objects and purposes of the organization were adopted, the primary one being to

honor and pay tribute to persons who made outstanding contributions to Jackson Parish athletics.

Jackson Parish Sports Hall of Fame was the first parish sports hall of fame organized in

Louisiana. It is a non-profit corporation. Any financial contributions would be charitable

donations under both state and federal law.

WALTER CAUSEY became head football coach in 1984 with a strong history of football

greatness. Playing offensive and defensive end at Neville High School 1962-1964 including

their 1962 state championship team. He was a three-year letterman as a defensive end at La.

Tech 1966-1968 winning the Billy Moss award his senior year for his leadership qualities and

also as co-captain. After a stint in the Army, Walter began coaching as an assistant at North

Caddo. He became head coach at J-HHS in 1984 coming from the head coaching position at

Jena High School. Walter was head coach from 1984 through 1988 compiling the best winning

percentage of any other J-HHS head coach with three or more seasons and in 5 years he

compiled a 49-16 record (.754). In tough district competition Coach Causey’s Tigers were able

to garner District Championships in 1984, 1987 & 1988 and winning back-to-back State

Championship titles in 1987 and 1988.

JIM JONES graduated from Jonesboro-Hodge High School in 1963 where he lettered 3 years in

football and track. In football Jim played halfback and defensive back where he garnered All

District honors his junior and senior years. He also was the team punter. He was selected the

halfback of the J-HHS Team of the Decade (1961-1971) as selected by long-time journalist Doc

Jeffress. Jim earned a scholarship to La. Tech University and lettered with the Bulldogs 1964-

1966. He played some offense and defense but punting was his forte and for many years Jim

held the Tech record for the longest punt of 85 yards. After finishing his college career Jim was

selected by the San Francisco 49’ers and also played with the Altanta Falcons in the NFL.

ANNE HURST MCCREADY graduated from Weston High School in 1964 where she was an

1961-1964, team captain her junior and senior years and was selected the District Most Valuable

Player her senior year while adding All Regional and All State awards. She average 35 points

per game for her junior and senior seasons scoring a high of 60 points in a regular season game

and a high of 49 points in a playoff game. As an almost unstoppable offensive scoring machine

Ann was used mainly on offensive but she was just as talented on the defensive side. She was a

prototype of what would eventually be a lady’s collegiate basketball player and WNBA player -

jump, run, jump shoot, and excellent ball handler and rebounder. However, neither existed at

that time.

TOMMY WILSON, JR was a three-sport athlete while at J-HHS. In basketball he was a 2 year

letterman for the Tigers and in his senior year he was selected All District, MVP District Player

State record (all classifications) in high jump for several years at 6 feet, 5 inches (tied with

others). He received scholarship offers in football, basketball and track & field. He chose to

continue his athletic career at Northwestern State University where he was a four year letterman

2017 MERITORIOUS SERVICE AWARDS

The Hall of Fame has instituted a new category to acknowledge the contributions of individuals who have

contributed greatly to the furthering athletics in Jackson Parish. A Certificate of Award for Meritorius

Service will be presented to five individuals this year, Simmie T. “Slim” Brown – Sports Official; Bobby

L. Culpepper – Patron; Raymond “Doc” Jeffress – Sports Journalist; Henry J. Kimp – Founder; Ira D.

Reeves – Patron.

Simmie T. “Slim” Brown – Slim has been a sports official for Jackson Parish and the surrounding area for

many years. He has given freely of his time in preseason scrimmages in all sports. He has officiated high

school basketball, baseball & softball, youth baseball and softball and even flag football. High School

athletics has benefitted from the dedication and impartiality of Slim Brown as an umpire or a referee with

a whistle in his hand.

Bobby L. Culpepper – Bobby Culpepper has given freely of his time and resources in furthering athletic

endeavors here in Jackson Parish. He has sponsored many youth sports teams each year as well as

providing assistance and support to our local high school teams in special events and play-off activities.

Raymond “Doc” Jeffress – “Doc” is undoubtably noted for his “Docs Diagnosis” which had run in the

Jackson Independent for many years. He notified us of the efforts of our local teams whether in victory or

defeat. Unknown to many he submitted hundreds of articles to publications around the State of Louisiana

telling of the successes of teams and individual players of our parish that he felt deserved recognition

beyond our borders. In the early years of KTOC radio “Doc” was also a member of the sports broadcast

team.

Henry J. Kimp – Henry Kimp has long held the view that some of the best athletes in our state come from

right here in Jackson Parish. Even though they have not received the recognition that he has felt they

deserved he was determined to create a venue where these athletes and coaches could be acknowledged

and memorialized. From his vision has come the Jackson Parish Sports Hall of Fame as he gathered a

group of like minded individuals and they formed this organization. Henry Kimp has spent many days

and nights to complete this vision.

Ira D. Reeves – Ira Reeves was a former teacher, administrator and public official that worked tireless to

encourage and foment athletic activities and facilities in Jackson Parish. He spent much time and

personal resources to help further all athletic endeavors in our parish.
