Jefco Aeromod’lers January Birthdays

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year and good flying. Yea! The days are getting longer, and warmer! - Pete

I. C. CARB DAY originated on January 1, 1985.There are souls who would rather celebrate the New Year by flying on January 1st, than by partying on December 31st. We decided to have our celebration at the flying field and enjoy our favorite pastime. Some years the weather is agreeable, and others are not; whatever the weather, plan on going to the field to welcome in the New Year. We always have fun, with several pilots and planes showing up for this event. If the runways are clear, just bring your wheels. If the runways are covered with snow (maybe, who knows), you have your choice - bring your skis (floats too)- or your wheels and a plastic snow shovel (must do all we can to protect the runways). So -- no matter the weather, charge your batteries (especially you electric flyers), put on your thermal underwear come out to your flying field, fly a little or a lot, and have a real ball! First one up in the air will have their picture the newsletter and be recognized as the “#1 FLYER Of the YEAR” (how about that!)This is not a scheduled event but is just for fun. There will be breakfast burritos (Santiagos) for those hearty souls who make it out. Coffee too. So, bring yourself, your plane(s) and your family/friends (good luck with that), and begin the New Year in a fun way! See you January 1st.Pete ThompsonJEFCO Aeromodlers

December 2nd, 2015 Jefco Aeromod’lers R/C Club Business Meeting Minutes

Continued on Page 4, Top Left Column

The meeting was called to order by President Peter Thompson at 6:58 PM. There were 38 attendees.PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS: On behalf of Tom Elliot, President Thompson presented T-shirts to members who volunteered at the Camp Host Jamboree held at the Chatfield Aerodrome Pavilion as reported in the October newsletter. Pictures of the presentation and a copy of the thank you card from the Camp Hosts will be published in the January newsletter.Lee Taylor brought binders of pictures taken by Gayle Jackson. He offered duplicates to anyone who would like one.Bruce Ream reported that the Long Range Planning Committee’s (LRPC’s) drawings were presented to Scott Roush, Head Ranger of Chatfield State Park. Scott said he saw no problems with the drawings and will submit them to the Corps of Engineers probably within the next couple of weeks to get their reaction to them. He is hoping that we can keep this decision local within the park and not have to go any further.PROGRAM: Bruce Ream presented the video he made to explain his interest and involvement in the hobby at his 60th high school reunion back in Illinois.Bud Glass presented a report about a couple of flying sites available through the Foothills Park and Recreation District, and what you must do to secure a permit to fly there. He talked mostly about the site just east of Dakota Ridge High School, which is the Robert A. Easton Regional Park. Bud was instrumental in getting the site approved under AMA Park Flyer Rules. Additional information was in the December, 2015 newsletter.Bud also reported that the weather station drawings have been approved by the Park, and that Bill Zimmerman volunteered to get the base plate for the mast fabricated and zinc plated.President Thompson reported that Bud Glass has volunteered to be Shed Boss, and that Paul McIntosh has volunteered to be the Event Coordinator. Both gentlemen’s phone numbers are on the newsletter’s cover. President Thompson thanked everyone for supporting him as the new president and for all the members involved in the many projects that are underway to improve the club.SECRETARY’S REPORT: Larry Fagan stated that November’s general business meeting minutes were published in the December newsletter. A statement in the November general meeting minutes has been found to be incorrect. The motion to accept the Treasurer’s report was made by Bruce Ream, not Bruce Robson. Bruce Robson motioned to accept the November general meeting minutes as amended. The motion was seconded

by Bruce Ream and carried.TREASURER’S REPORT: Lora Knowlton reported dues renewals are still coming in at a brisk pace. The deposit payment has been made for the auction at the fairgrounds. The state sales tax license and AMA charter renewal fees for 2016 have been paid. Ads in Model Aviation and contest sanction fees for Warbirds over Denver and the August Pylon Race have been paid for. Bruce Robson motioned to accept the Treasurer’s report. The motion was seconded by Larry Fagan and passed.MEMBERSHIP: Lora Knowlton stated that we have 195 active members and 36 delinquent.FIELD MAINTENANCE AND RUNWAY: No report.SAFETY: No report.FLIGHT INSTRUCTION / TRAINING: No report.EVENTS: I. C. Carb Day will be Friday, January 1, 2016. First flight at 7:00 A.M. Burritos will be furnished for those who fly.Jefco Aeromod’lers Auction will be February 5 and 6, 2016. A flyer and preregistration details will be published in the January newsletter.Warbirds over Denver will be held June 10 - 12, 2016The Mile High Challenge Pylon Race will be held August 5 - 7, 2016 at the Chatfield Aerodrome. At the present time several out-of-state contestants have committed to compete. We will be looking for volunteers to help with the event later next year.PROGRAMMING: President Thompson announced that we are still looking for a Program Coordinator.OLD/UNFINISHED BUSINESS:Weather Station: Terry Hock gave an update on the technical logistics involved with the weather station. He is working on getting the data linked to the new website.Website: Lora Knowlton said the new website Jeffcoaeromodlers.com is up and running. The old Jefcoaeromodlers.org will be redirected to the new site in the very near future. Before that happens she wants to make sure everything isOLD/UNFINISHED BUSINESS (Con’t):archived from the old site so we don’t lose anything. Lora asked if anyone finds any typos or errors on the site to email her about them so that they can be fixed. We want the site to be as perfect as possible. Bruce Robson has volunteered to continue being the Media Liaison and volunteered to help with the new website in that capacity.Club Historian Lee Taylor interjected that the reason Jefco Aeromod’lers is spelled with only one “f” is that the

4

member who went to the state to register the club as an organization with a trade name could not spell worth beans.Auction: Bruce Riley reported that the Auction Committee met at Mike Boyer’s house. Auction preregistration is up on the new site. The submit button does not work yet but will very soon. You can still fill out the form, save it, and submit it via email attachment. He passed around the Auction Flyers that just came out. He also passed around a sign-up sheet for volunteers.

NEW BUSINESS:

President Thompson asked if anyone had any updates on the FAA announcement. Lora played the AMA “Drone Update” about the Department of Transportation’s UAS Task Force’s recommendations submitted to the FAA. The FAA would require each pilot to register, not each vehicle. The AMA has protested stating that it is a burdensome procedure.

SHOW AND TELL:

Ray Carver brought his Foam Board MF Typhoon. The kits are sold through Altitude Hobbies in Fort Collins, but you can download the plans for free.

DRAWING: There was no drawing tonight.

MOTION to ADJOURN: A motion to adjourn was made by Tony Christiansen and seconded by Brad Weissenfels. The motion carried at 8:34 P.M.

Respectfully submitted, Larry Fagan, Secretary.

Auction 2016- submitted by Bruce Riley

Our Annual Auction is just over one month away. We need your help in “two” ways.

We need 50-60 volunteers and to date we only have 25. Please sign up at our next club meeting

Wednesday Jan. 6th, or you can call Bruce Riley at 303-898-6014 to volunteer.

Since the auction is our primary fund raiser for the year, you could also help by going to our

Website, RC Auction 2016, click the “Pay Now” button. This will allow you to buy or sell

Items at the auction. Even if you decide not to come, your contribution will help offset our expenses.

If we could get 150 to sign-up that would defray all of our upfront cost, thus everything we make at the auction would go back to the club.

Weather Station Mast Upper Brackethas been Installed!

Bud Glass has not been one to wait for the grass to grow under his feet. While he is waiting for the fabrication of the weather station mast base to be completed he has already installed the upper mounting bracket on the shed. He used a scrap piece of ABS pipe to simulate the mast. The permanent mast will be GRC (Galvanized Rigid Conduit). Note the bracket allows adjustment in the E - W plane!

Minutes of December 16th 2015 Jefco Aeromod’lers R/C Club Board Meeting

Meeting was called to order at 7:04 PM by President Peter Thompson.Peter Thompson(P), Present Lora Knowlton (Treas), Present Ron Ratcliffe (BM), PresentGlenn Lee (VP), Present Steve Rosselot (Safety), Present Art Wilson (BM), PresentLarry Fagan (Sec), Present Kevin Furman(BM), Present Vacancy

President’s Comments:You knew it was coming! If you own a drone, you must reg is ter i t wi th the Federa l Av iat ion Administration's Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) registry. A federal law effective December 21, 2015 requires unmanned aircraft registration, and you are subject to civil and criminal penalties if you do not register. See below for more detailshttps://www.faa.gov/uas/registration/Lora Knowlton read Jim Tiller’s post that was on the AMA District IX FaceBook page concerning this issue.Secretary’s Report: Kevin Furman motioned to accept the November Board meeting minutes published in the December newsletter. The motion was seconded by Ron Ratcliffe and carried.Treasurer’s Report: Lora Knowlton presented the club financials to date. Lora reported that there was not much activity other than membership renewals. A motion to accept the report was made by Art Wilson and seconded by Kevin Furman. The motion passed.Committee Reports:Membership Report: Lora reported that the renewal dues are still rolling in. Exact membership numbers were not immediately available due to the transition to the new website.Field Maintenance & Runways: Bob Willdigg will report at the general meeting.Safety: Steve Rosselot had no report.Flight Instruction / Training: Rob Brandi – No report.Events: The I. C. Carb Day fun fly will be held on Friday, January 1st.Auction: Lora Knowlton reported for Auction Chair Bruce Riley. Two preregistrations are in. Bruce needs more volunteers otherwise everything is going smoothly.Program Coordinator: President Thompson reiterated the need for a program coordinator. Larry Fagan said he would volunteer for the position, but felt reluctant to do so since he feels it is important to involve other members with the club’s activities.Old/Unfinished Business:Weather Station Update - Bud Glass’ and Terry Hock’s emails were discussed. The park has given us the go-ahead for the weather station mast and mounting details. Bud fabricated and installed the wall bracket

for the weather station mast and is waiting for the base plate to be fabricated so he can mount it on the concrete apron at the north side of the shed. Terry has been working very hard at programming the new weather station software. He has a website set up so the Board can look at the data on an actual web page. He is still working at getting the cell modem to transfer data from the weather station using a cell data connection since there is no internet available at the Aerodrome. The question was raised - could Terry get the wind direction presented as a compass rose? This request will be passed along to Terry.Website Update – Lora Knowlton asked that people look over the new website and submit requests for enhancements. The URL for the old website will redirect viewers to the new site, so the old site is no longer available for viewing or use of any sort. All information on the old site was archived prior to the redirect.New Business: President Thompson asked Lora Knowlton to update the Board on the proceedings of the AMA District IX meeting from December 12. Lora said Tom Neff and Rick McCaskill each presented different topics. Over 30 local club officers attended this meeting. Lora said that the AMA website (www.modelaircraft.org) has almost all the information they presented. She mentioned that all club flight instructors should have an “I.P. Instructor” certification and designation on their AMA membership card if they will be instructing on behalf of the club. It is the club’s responsibility to vet the instructors. Lora reported that a lot of the other clubs have on-site defibrillators at their flying fields and that we may want to consider getting one for the pavilion. Lora also reported that the AMA now has a new video “Ground Control” for Board members. One of the most prevalent challenges for all clubs that were in attendance is how to recruit and retain younger/youth members. Many of the clubs have active youth outreach programs and Lora suggested that Jefco consider this as a goal for 2016.President Thompson said that one of his goals for 2016 is to have some field improvements relating to safety completed. Prospective improvements will be the subject of a future meeting.Motion to Adjourn: A motion to adjourn was made by Art Wilson and was seconded by Ron Ratcliffe. The motion carried at 8:55 P.M.Respectfully submitted, Larry Fagan, Secretary.
