NEW PERKS PROGRAM AT THE SUKHOTHAI BANGKOKA limited-edition membership card rewards guests with exclusive treats

Almost 10 years after its

launch as one of South-

East Asia’s most eminent

cruise ships, the Emeraude

published The Jewels

of Halong Bay: A Tale

of Adventure in French

Indochina and a Curious

History of the Emeraude.

The 112-page book details

the remarkable adventure

of a colonial French family,

an historic paddle steamship

and its contemporary

namesake. Part history and

part biography, the book tells

how three French brothers

(the Roques) left Bordeaux

in 1858 and made a fortune

in colonial Indochina. A

good portion of the book

follows entrepreneur

Eric Merlin’s search for

information on the vessel, its

sister ships and the founding

brothers’ descendants.

Finally, the story recounts

how the Emeraude’s replica

took shape in the shipyard

and was relaunched on

Halong Bay in 2003 as a

distinctive luxury cruiser and

fl oating hotel. The book is

US$15, and is available at

the Emeraude’s sales offi ce

in Hanoi, at the Press Club

Hanoi, the Emeraude Café

in Halong City, on the cruise

itself and at La Résidence

Hotel & Spa in Hue.

courtesy, class and culture. This

is the kind of ballroom dancing

that ‘Dancing at the Maynila’

The Maynila Ballroom, which
