The Jewish People ArriveToday, the Jews of Latin America

reside mainly in Argentina (250,000)and Brazil (130,000).

Where did they come from, andwhen did they arrive? The answers tothese questions are to be found onanother continent altogether : Europe.

At the end of the fifteenth century,the Inquisition was in full force inSpain and Portugal. Rather thansubmit to forcible conversion, someJewish people chose to suffer tortureand death. Others agreed to renouncetheir Jewish identity.

Those who converted were calledMarranos or Conversos. Some, thoughpublicly “converted,” still riskedcapture and death by continuingsecretly to practice Judaism. Otherswho had agreed to give up Judaismseem to have genuinely put it aside tolive—outwardly at least—asChristians.

The first Jewish people to arrive inSouth America around the turn of the16th century were Sephardic (Hebrewfor Spanish) Jews who were fleeing theIberian Peninsula.They settled mainlyin Argentina and Brazil, and these firstLatin American “Jewish pilgrims” setthe pattern for subsequent immigrants.Today the Jewish population in LatinAmerica stands somewhere around400,000 and is still to be found inthese two countries.

This issue of The Chosen Peoplenewsletter is dedicated to the Jewish

people of Latin America—a segment of theJewish world that goes virtually unnoticed bymost North Americans. Yet, more than fifty yearsbefore the first Jewish settlers arrived on theshores of Manhattan Island in 1654, there werealready Jewish people in the SouthernHemisphere.

As President of Chosen People Ministries, I spendquite a bit of time praying about how to reachJewish people in every nation of the world. But Iought to tell you that I have something of apersonal stake in Latin America. My wife, Zhava,was born in Argentina, and I have had a specialburden for many years for the Jewish people inthe Southern Hemisphere.

These Latin American Jewish communities havea long and illustrious history. The story of theirmigration and settlement is similar to that ofmany other Jewish groups. It contains thefamiliar elements of persecution, flight and thesearch for safe haven that have characterizedJewish history throughout the ages.

culture. However, the “Latin Americanconnection” was established.WhenArgentina became independent fromSpain in 1810, one of the first acts ofBernardino Rivadavia,Argentina’s firstpresident, was to end the Inquisition.Argentina then became a destinationof choice for Jewish immigrants fromWestern Europe in the mid-1800s.

This trend continued into the late19th century and beyond as Argentina’swillingness to accept immigrants led tothe arrival of Russian and EasternEuropean Jews who were seeking toescape persecution and to better theirlives.As the population increased,Jewish social institutions grew as well.The Jewish community formedsynagogues and schools, along withnewspapers and even a Yiddish theaterin Buenos Aires.

However, the Jewish community inArgentina has seen its share of trouble.Political unrest and social upheavalthroughout the decades have spawnedintense periods of anti-Semitism. Inrecent years,Argentina’s Jewishcommunity has been the focus ofterrorist attacks. In April of 1992, theIsraeli Embassy was bombed, killing32 people. In 1994, Zhava and I werein Argentina when the IsraeliteMutual Aid Association headquartersin Buenos Aires was bombed, killingmore than 100 people and woundingat least 200 others.

In spite of these difficulties, theJewish community has played animportant part in the economic andcultural life of Argentina. However,change is once more on the horizon.

Recent economic troubles have led toa new immigrant population—Argentine Jews departing to begin anew life in Israel. Now, 500 years afterthe Inquisition, these Jewish peopleare finally coming home.

The Jews of BrazilJewish history in Brazil dates back

to 1500, when refugees from theInquisition settled in Brazil. By theearly 1600s, Brazil had acquired apopulation of about 50,000Europeans—some of them descendedfrom the Conversos. In 1624, part ofnorthern Brazil came under Dutchrule.This was good news for theJewish community, for the Dutchwere sympathetic to the Jewish peopleand allowed Jewish immigration tocontinue.

The Jews in northern Brazilbecame established members ofsociety.They prospered economicallyand built synagogues and schools.Some of the Jewish people thenbegan to strike out in otherdirections. Some headed south, wherethey seem to have been absorbed intothe native population. One recentstartling development is the discoveryof a tribal group in southern Brazilthat keeps the custom of lightingcandles on Friday night and avoidingthe consumption of pork!

Things took a turn for the worsewhen the Portuguese reasserted theirauthority over the Dutch in 1654.Under renewed persecution, someJewish people chose to flee. Onegroup of escapees made their way toanother Dutch town, NewAmsterdam, which in time becameNew York City.

The 1920s saw a spike in Jewishimmigration as about 30,000 WesternEuropean Jews came to Brazil.Thefollowing decade added another17,500.As in many other places, the

Jewish community prospered orsuffered depending on the dispositionof the government in power.A newconstitution in 1945 helped secure therights of Jewish citizens, and in 1947,Brazil cast its vote in the UN for thecreation of a Jewish state.Today, theJewish community in Brazil boasts afull spectrum of social and religiousinstitutions.

New Fields in Latin America

Over the years, Chosen PeopleMinistries’ evangelistic outreach hastouched virtually every Jewishcommunity in South America. Nowthe work in Latin America continues,with outreach among the Jewishpeople of Argentina and Mexico, andvolunteer chapters throughout LatinAmerica.We also hope to open a newwork in Brazil. Please pray that wewill find the right person to initiatethis ministry.

The Jewish people of Latin Americamay seem a world away from us, butGod has not lost sight of them, andneither should we.Although they dwellfar from their roots, God has declaredthat “He will set up a banner for thenations, and will assemble the outcasts ofIsrael, and gather together the dispersed ofJudah from the four corners ofthe earth” (Isaiah 11:12).

beginning a ten-year period duringwhich they worked to develop theministry in Argentina and several SouthAmerican countries.The Lord has blessedtheir work and has opened many doorsfor them to bring the message ofsalvation to the Jewish people of LatinAmerica. Over the years, they have seenmany Jewish people receive Messiah andhave also ministered to many Gentiles. Inaddition, they’ve been instrumental inhelping the churches understand theimportance and the urgency of bringingthe Good News to the Chosen People.

Expanding Horizons Through the encouragement of

Chosen People Ministries and theInternational Messianic Jewish Alliance,the Habifs began to pray about starting aMessianic Jewish Center somewhere inLatin America.The Lord answered theirprayers by directing them to Mexico City,where they arrived in October 2000.

The work began with a small group ofthree women, two of whom wereMessianic Jews.They met informally atfirst in the Habifs’ dining room.Theynamed this small fellowship Kehilat haDerech—Congregation “The Way.” Littleby little, by the grace of God, the grouphas grown and now has a membership of50 people.

Late in 2002, the Habifs startedanother Messianic congregation inPachuca City, approximately 50 milesfrom Mexico City.There the fellowshipnumbers 30 people. Both synagoguesconsist of Messianic Jews and Gentileswho love our people.They have alreadywelcomed many Jewish seekers whocome and hear the Good News ofMessiah Yeshua.They have also developedmany relationships with non-believingJewish people for whom they pray andwhom they continue to invite tomeetings.

The Habifs are a living example ofthe Apostle Paul’s great exhortation: “Hewho has begun a good work in you willcomplete it until the day of Jesus Christ”(Philippians 1:6). ✡

Ashkenazic (European) Jews whoseforebears were immigrants who arrivedbetween the late 19th century and theeve of World War II.The overwhelmingmajority of them live in Mexico City,where Elias and Rosa Habif have beguntheir ministry.

to have been ordained through ChosenPeople Ministries for the very special taskof reaching the Jewish people of Mexico.

Having grown up in a ConservativeSephardic Jewish family, Elias attendedHebrew school and practiced Judaism. In1983, at a Chosen People Ministriesmeeting in Buenos Aires,Argentina, hewas moved to receive Jesus as Messiah.There he met Rosa, who would becomehis wife.They immediately began toserve as volunteers in the ministry.

I was born into a traditional,Sephardic Jewish family in SouthAmerica with roots in Egypt.As achild, I would go to synagogue on theHigh Holy Days, but I did not pursueJewish studies.

Anti-Semitism grew worse duringWorld War II, and my resentment ofeverything Christian increased.Although I didn’t hide being Jewish,I did not reveal it to just anyone.

One day, I met a beautiful youngwoman named Amanda.We dated, butfor a long time I hid my Jewishbackground from her.As ourfriendship grew, I agonized abouthiding the truth.

Finally, I could stand it no longer.I confessed my Jewish identity toher, thinking that it would end ourrelationship.To my surprise, she toldme that due to her faith, she lovedGod’s Chosen People. In an instant,my sadness was transformed intoenormous joy. Not long after that,I became a follower of Messiah.

Today, I have a beautiful familywith my wife,Amanda, my two sonsand their wives, who are all believers.

In 1979, I became the Chairman ofthe Board of Chosen People Ministriesin Argentina, and I have served on theBoard up to the present. By God’sgrace, I have been a part of what theLord has been doing through ChosenPeople Ministries in Argentina andthroughout South America. ✡

Chosen People Ministries has beenactive in reaching the Jewish people ofSouth America since the early 1940s.The work there was founded byEmanuel Lichtenstein, who servedwith the Mission in Nazi-occupiedEurope and barely escaped to BuenosAires. He began by ministering toother Jewish refugees. In the 1960s, theleadership torch was passed on toVictor Sedaca, an Argentine Jewishbeliever who emphasized ministry tothe Sephardic Jewish Argentines.Roberto Passo joined the Mission in1982 and served for twenty years.Under his tenure, the work continuedto expand its sphere of influence.

A Center of ActivityToday in Buenos Aires, activities are

coordinated through Chosen PeopleMinistries’ Messianic Center, which isblessed by the presence of Betsy Leon.Raised in a believing home in Lima,Peru, she came to Argentina in 1992 inorder to study at the Baptist Seminary.

In March 1993, she began to servethe Mission in Buenos Aires. Her lovefor the Jewish people has kept pace withher growing responsibilities. She serves assecretary, manages administration andfinances, answers correspondence andcoordinates church ministries.

Betsy also attends Chosen PeopleMinistries’ congregation, leads theteenagers’ group and serves on theworship team.

A Magnet for MessiahThe ministry team at Beth Sar

Shalom has seen encouraging results inrecent months, including more newJewish visitors at services.There has alsobeen a significant increase in the interestof church leaders to know the Jewishroots of their Christian faith. In addition,more members of the congregation havebeen trained as leaders.

New leadership has resulted incontinued effective ministry withchildren, teenagers and young adults.The congregation also carries on a socialprogram, including spiritual counselingin a well known local hospital.

Volunteer Outreach ProgramsWhere would Chosen People

Ministries’ global outreach be withoutdedicated volunteer workers? Volunteersthroughout Latin America have certainlymade a real difference for Messiah. Guidedby a renewed vision to present Jesus as theMessiah in a Jewish context, the Mission’svolunteer groups have sensed a growinginterest in the Gospel among members oflocal Jewish communities.

Volunteer workers havebranched out from BuenosAires to bring specialGospel-related activities ona regular basis to other citiesin Argentina and throughoutLatin America.Thevolunteers are from differentbackgrounds, but they sharea deep love for Israel and aspiritual call to reach theJewish people with themessage of Jesus as theMessiah.

Messianic Seminary inArgentina has been offeringcoursework in Messianicstudies for about twelveyears. Under the leadershipof Ricardo Chemi, thecongregational leader,additional teachers have beentrained, and the number ofcourses has been increased.This year, 38 students arestudying subjects that includethe Hebrew Scriptures, NewTestament studies and Jewishhistory and culture.

Ricardo Chemi—Drawn to Messiah

As a child, I was exposed to all theJewish festivals due to the influence ofmy father’s observant family. However,when I was nine years old, I saw thefilm King of Kings on television.Afterwatching this film, I asked, “Who wasthis Jesus and why didn’t we accepthim as the Messiah?” No one seemedto be able to answer my question.

My deep desire to know Him ledme on a search that ended with adream. In my dream,Abraham andMoses introduced me to the Messiah.He was a shining light, and Irecognized that it was Yeshua, Jesus. But

I told myself,“This is simplya dream.” However, I beganto read the New Testament.I was 14 years old.

I asked the Lord to helpme discover the truth aboutYeshua.When I finallycame to faith through the

testimony of a friend, I felt acomplete and overwhelming peacecome over me.

During my studies at the LatinAmerican Rabbinical Seminary, I wasled to contact Chosen PeopleMinistries in Argentina. Later,I completed my studies at theInternational Baptist TheologicalSeminary.

Now, as the leader of ChosenPeople Ministries’ congregation inBuenos Aires, I have the greatprivilege of showing my people thatJesus is the Jewish Messiah. ✡

place after this” (Rev. 1:19). HereJohn is transported to the very heartof heaven (4:1,2).

Revelation 4 shows us six mainfeatures of heaven’s throne room.

ALMIGHTY GOD SITS ONTHE THRONE (4:2,3)

The vision of God sitting on athrone is similar to that which Isaiahsaw (Is. 6:1).The throne is “set” inheaven, far above all the pettystruggles on earth.The throne tells ofGod’s sovereign rule over theuniverse and His entire creation.Theeternal God is supreme (Dan. 4:35).

A RAINBOW ENCIRCLESTHE THRONE (4:3)

The rainbow is associated with thevery presence of God and is areminder of God’s covenant with Hiscreation established after the Flood(Gen. 9:13-16). Ezekiel associates the

rainbow with the glory of God (Eze. 1:28: See Rev. 10:1).

TWENTY-FOUR ELDERSSURROUND THE THRONE(4:4)

The elders are sitting on thrones,clothed in white raiment and havingcrowns of gold.The crowns theywear are victors’ crowns (stephanos inGreek), indicating a reward forvictory accomplished (1 Cor. 9:25).Whether the elders are representativeof church elders or Israel or both isspeculative, since their identity is notdisclosed.

SOUNDS OF JUDGMENTCOME FROM THE THRONE(4:5)

With the volume turned up, wehear rumblings, peals of thunder andflashes of lightning similar to thescene at Mt. Sinai (Ex. 20:18).These

sounds from God’s throne indicate toJohn that judgment is forthcoming.Revelation Chapters 6-19 containthe Tribulation judgments.

LAMPS AND A SEA OFGLASS ARE BEFORE THETHRONE (5b-6a)

Seven lamps of fire are seenburning before the throne (1:4, 3:1).Here is a representation of the HolySpirit in all His fullness andperfection.At the baptism of Jesus,the Holy Spirit was visible as a dove,while on the Day of Pentecost thereappeared “divided tongues, as of fire”(Acts 2:3).The sea of glass before thethrone may be an anti-type of thelaver in the tabernacle (Ex. 30:18-21)and the Sea in the temple (2 Chron.4:2-6) used by the priests forcleansing. In Revelation, we see aspecial sanctuary of God (11:19)while in eternity no temple exists(Rev. 21:22).

ALL WORSHIP ISDIRECTED TOWARD THETHRONE (4:8-11)

John listens to the exaltation ofGod’s holiness by both the livingcreatures and the twenty-four eldersin a way that is similar to what Isaiahheard (Is. 6:3). God is thrice holy(vdq qadosh in Hebrew) andholiness is His foremost attribute,because it pervades all the otherattributes of God.

REVELATION FOR TODAYThe theme of the worship hymn

in chapter 4 is that God is theCreator (4:11). Recognizing theCreator is the first step toward trustin the Redeemer (Acts 14:8-18). Inwitnessing for our Messiah to Jewishpeople and others, it helps toremember that our sovereign Creatoris enthroned in heaven and is there tohelp us lead others to the truth ofMessiah’s redemption. ✡

The Throne Room – The Heart of Heaven in Revelation Chapter 4

The throne room is the heart of heaven,and worship is the main occupation of thosein heaven.The fourth and fifth chapters inRevelation represent the greatest worshipchapters in the entire Bible.

IN MONTREAL, ISRAELI COMES TO FAITH

In Montreal, one of the congregation’s membersbrought a young Israeli man to visit a service wherecongregational leader Percy Johnson spoke aboutprophecy and Israel. The young man came up toPercy afterwards, saying that he had agreed withwhat Percy said and felt very much at home in thecongregation. He continued attending, and over thenext few weeks, he came closer to belief in Messiah.After seeing a play at a local church about the finalhours of Jesus, he wept as he watched the portrayalof Messiah’s sacrifice. The Israeli man was moved toreceive the Lord, and the Montreal congregation isthrilled to welcome a new brother into the family ofGod.

MEETING MESSIAH IN MISSOURI

Chosen People Ministries’ Michael Cohen, who isbased in Chicago, ministered someweeks ago in a church in a small town inMissouri. He was surprised to meet aReform Jewish woman who hadaccompanied her friend to the service.Michael spoke with her about his ownJewish background. After the service,they continued the conversation, andMichael shared the Gospel with her. Itwas evident that she was affected byMichael’s words, and she expressed a

desire to know the Lord. God opened her heart andshe prayed with Michael to receive theMessiah. Later, when Michael followed up, hediscovered that she was growing in her faith andattending a fellowship.

FAITH DECISION FOR ISRAELI DOWN UNDER

Barry Buirski, who serves with Celebrate Messiah,Chosen People Ministries’ partner in Australia, wastraveling recently in New South Wales. There, he hadthe opportunity to join with Kyle Sutton in visitingan Israeli-born Jewish man who had expressedopenness to the Lord. Kyle had been witnessing toMr. L. and thought it would be good for him to meeta Jewish believer. Barry and Kyle had the privilege ofleading Mr. L. to faith in Yeshua. Please pray thatthis new believer will grow in his faith.

MY JERUSALEM GAINS

My Jerusalem, Chosen PeopleMinistries’ evangelistic magazinein Russian, was recently includedin an international book fair heldin Jerusalem. The fair attracted alarge crowd and provided analmost unheard-of opportunityfor mass evangelism, and achance to become widely known by Israelis andparticipants of many nationalities. Pray that the Lordwill use this wonderful publication throughout theworld to draw many to Messiah.

DRAMA MINISTRY LEADS TO SALVATION

DECISION

Recently, staff member Alan Shore presented AChosen Vessel, a one-man drama on the life of theApostle Paul, at a large Messianic congregation inNew Jersey. The gathering of about 400 people wasdeeply moved. When the congregational leaderfollowed up with an invitation to receive the Lord, atleast one person responded and came to faith inMessiah.

REAPS HARVEST FOR

MESSIAH

Vladimir Pikman, who directsChosen People Ministries’outreach work in Germany,reports good news. Therewere fifteen faith decisions,mostly by Jewish seekers, ata recent Messianic con-ference in central Germany that was organizedby Chosen People Ministries and two otherevangelistic groups. The congregation in Berlinrented a bus to attend, and during the journey,another Jewish woman became a believer—rightthere on the bus! She is now in discipleshipclasses, and after attending one of the classes, herhusband also became a believer.
