May your celebration be a joyous occasion for family and friends.

The miracles with which the
Passover story is embellished
have largely lost their credibility
in an unimaginative, pragmatic,
rationalist world. Most of us, if we
give these miracles any thought at
all, search diligently for some nat-
ural explanation for the wonders
which were wrought during the
Hebrews’ struggle for liberation
from Egypt.
Yet it is difficult, at this
Passover season, to be a pes-
simist. The warm glow of the
Seders, the deepening of family
relationships, the knowledge that
Pesach traditionally provides evi-
dence of the capacity of the
Jewish people to survive all lend
to a spirit of optimism which it is
impossible to deny.
As we read the Haggadah
we are conscious of the fact that
much of it is rooted in the super-
stitions and prejudices of the
past, an age which we fail fully

to understand. But there is a link
which binds those who compiled
the Haggadah to the era of which
it tells and there is, as well, a
chain which binds us to the cre-
ators of the Haggadah and
through them, to our ancestors of
Mosaic times. And there is a
chain, too, which will bind our
descendents to us, who in our
own way are seeking new paths
towards an understanding of a
complex and dangerous exis-
tence.
The continued observance
of Passover, rooted in the long
and troubled Jewish past, pro-
vides hope that having survived
the stinging lash of the Egyptian
whip, the blazing auto-de-fe’s of
the Inquisition, the horrors of the
gas chambers and crematoria of
Auschwitz and Treblinka,
Buchenwald and Dachau, Jews
can be reasonably confident of
their ultimate survival.

growing number of Jewishtourists to Baku.
Still, Moiseev’s planfor success involvesattracting non-Jewishpatrons. “This will be akosher restaurant”, hesays “but its successdepends on its appeal tothe average Azeri restau-rant goer, and we’ve doneeverything possible tomake them feel at home at7/40”.

BACK: Do you rememberthe kosher restaurant ChezBenny? It was a mainstaysince 1991 on Queen MaryRoad, owned by BennyCohen (no relation). When itclosed in 2017 it left a hugevoid. In mid-October 2018,a rebirth was mounted witha new name and location.Benny et Fils made itsdebut across the street at4944 Queen Mary, with Filsbeing Benny’s 23 year oldson Yaniv.
When I arrived forlunch with my friendsGlenn and Mitchell, we weregreeted by Michael Labbé.Benny et Fils has a uniqueformat. The menu is posted
on large boards behind thecash. Customers arrive, make their order and thenselect a table to sit at. Themanager on duty, in thiscase Labbé, brings the foodto your table and takes yourdrink order. It is a neat andefficient format. Meanwhile, the chefs – on this dayBenny and Yaniv- workedseamlessly to make themeals. We thoroughlyenjoyed the experience, sampling the likes of hum-mus with eggs with smallpieces of pita, the fried clas-sic chicken burger, impec-cable Shawarma on abaguette, dirty fries and dif-ferent kinds of falafel.

punishment was immoralunder all circumstances.
Chicago rabbiArnold Goodman, writing inthe official magazine of theAmerican Jewish Congress, argued that taking anyhuman life, no matter whatthe reason, was morallywrong and “might openIsrael to changes of venge-fulness and rancor.”
Journalist andactivist Paul Jacobs wrotethat the Eichmann episodedemonstrated “Israeliparochialism, chauvinismand distrust…of the Gentileworld” (although he some-what condescendingly con-ceded that he now “under-stood better” the reasons forthe attitudes he ascribed toIsrael).
So, was there aschism between AmericanJewry and Israel overEichmann, comparable to“The Great Schism” todayabout which journalistJonathan Weisman recentlywrote on the op-ed page ofthe new York Times?
Yes and no. SinceIsrael’s earliest days, therehas always been a minorityof American Jews who aredeeply troubled by someIsraeli policies, or evenuncomfortable with the veryexistence of a sovereignJewish state.

The voices of thecritics are amplified precise-ly because their perspectiveruns contrary to that ofmost American Jews. Fromthe point of view of the newsmedia, Jews supportingIsrael is a boring dog-bites-man story; Jews denouncingIsrael, however, is man-bites-dog. The internet and24-hour cable news havecreated new and faster waysfor the minority to makeitself heard.
But the notion thatthere is a substantial newsplit between AmericanJews and Israel, that rela-tions are reaching “a break-ing point,” as Weisman andothers are claiming, is con-tradicted by years of publicopinion polling.
Every year, theAmerican Jewish Committee
in its annual survey of U.S.Jewish public opinion, asksrespondents how much theycare about Israel. And everyyear, the results are thesame.
For the past twentyyears - whether Israel’sprime minister was ArielSharon, Ehud Olmert, orBenjamin Netanyahu;whether America’s presi-dent was Bill Clinton,George W. Bush, BarackObama, or Donald Trump -between 70% and 75% ofAmerican Jews have saidthey care “strongly” or“somewhat strongly” aboutIsrael, and between 20%and 30% have said they feel“fairly distant” or “very dis-tant” from Israel.
The number who feel“very” distant is always thesmaller of the two, ranging

Fordecades, Republicans haveeyed the 70–80% of theJewish electorate that con-sistently supportsDemocrats and politicizedU.S. support of Israel in afutile attempt to makeinroads on the Jewish vote. It’s never worked becauseRepublicans are complete-ly out of step with Jewishvalues on a wide range ofissues. to keep his big mouth shut.Apparently not...
Livingston, thoughsuspended by the LabourParty in 2016, called allega-tions of anti-Semitism inhis former party “lies andsmears”, nothing but anattempt to bring down partyleader Jeremy Corbyn andthose who share his views.“It is not anti-Semitic”, hesaid “to hate the Jews ofIsrael.” He told a meeting ofLabour Against TheWitchhunt that “if you havea genuine socialist leaderwho is going to transformthings for ordinary peopleand make the bloody corpo-rations pay their fair shareof tax - they will do whatev-er is necessary to stopyou...” It was obvious whothe “they” were.
Readers may recallLivingston’s ridiculous com-ments in 2016 when heclaimed that “When Hitlerwon his election in 1932,his policy was that Jewsshould be moved to Israel. He was supporting Zionismbefore he went mad andended up killing six millionJews.”
Meanwhile in anoth-er development the UnitedKingdom’s Labour Partyexpelled Jackie Walker, whose vitriolic anti-Semitismepitomizes the party’s anti-Semitism problem.
Walker, a staunchsupporter of Corbyn, hasalready been suspendedonce for writing onFacebook that Jews were“chief financiers of thesugar and slave trade.”According to Walker’s web-site her father, Jack Cohen, was a Russian AshkenaziJew. If so, Mr. Cohen mustbe so proud of his daughter.
British scholar AlanJohnson recently publisheda 137-page report contain-ing 130 examples of anti-Semitism in the party. There is no sign of a let up.The nine Labour lawmakerswho quit the party recentlyhave clearly had enough.
