The Significance of Chanukah

It is not really surprising that Chanukah, traditionally a minor festival during which Jews are even permitted to carry our their normal daily work, should during recent years have acquired the status it enjoys in the Jewish community. As the children of the original immigrants from the Jewish enclaves in Eastern Europe began to attend schools in North America they were brought into contact with Christmas music, Christmas gifts and, gen-erally, the not unappealing Christmas spirit which inspired their Christian neighbours. And so there developed throughout the Diaspora a powerful “bring Christmas into Chanukah” movement.

There is nothing wrong in the exchange of gifts among Jews during the Chanukah period. There is certainly a great deal of value in the emphasis upon the kin-dling of the Menorah candles as a perpetual symbol of the light of freedom. But it would be a pity, indeed, if the emphasis upon the exchange of gifts and the exulta-tions of the Menorah overshadowed the essential lessons of Chanukah and its tradi-tional meaning in Jewish history.

The essential lesson of Chanukah is that the privilege of living a full and free

Jewish life must be fought for unceasingly. Victory in the battle for religious liberty must be won in every generation. Sometimes, as the rise in anti-Semitism today illustrates, the enemy is the non-Jew. More often than not, however, the enemies are the Jews themselves who, ignorant of the great truths of Judaism and their value in the enrichment of their own lives, are willing to make compromises in the name of conformi-ty, just as the Hellenizers justified their acceptance of the customs of their neigh-bours as an unwillingness to perpetuate the differences which existed between them.

And so as we celebrate Chanukah - with a generous measure of concession to the more attractive aspects of Christmas - we would do well to remember that our own time is not different, basically, from that of the Maccabees. Between the corroding materialism which presses inexorably upon us and the non-Jewish causes which appeal of what there is in us of altruism, Judaism often seems to be lost. Yet there is today a body of modern Maccabees who insist that Jewish life still has something valuable to offer and who are sparing no effort to con-vince as many Jews as possible see, and appreciate, this value.

Baroness Ruth Lynn Deech, lawyer, acad-emic, biochemist, politi-cian, prominent supporter of Brexit, and patron of the activist group UK Lawyers for Israel, has expressed her “increasing unease” about the manner in which community leaders are dealing with Holocaust education. She is espe-cially critical of the “day trips to Auschwitz”, argu-ing that children do not emerge from these trips with a true understand-ing of the contribution Jews are making to the world.

Baroness Deech is also a vociferous oppo-nent of the proposed British Holocaust memori-al in Westminster. “Building a memorial to the Holocaust will not do the trick,” she told those observing the 81st anniver-sary of Kristallnacht. Building the memorial would only allow oppor-tunist politicians to “put the Holocaust in a box by signing a declaration once a year, having their pho-tographs taken and believ-ing that they have done

FORMER US AMBASSADOR TO THE UNITED Nations Nikki Haley was presented recently with the World Jewish Congress’ Theodor Herzl Award. The award is given to individuals who work to promote Herzl’s ideals for a safer, more tolerant world for the Jewish people. Previous winners include Angela Merkel, former US Secretary of State General Colin L. Powell, former Israeli President Shimon Peres, Elie and Marion Wiesel, and, posthumously, Ronald Reagan and Axel Springer. “The UN’s bias against Israel has long undermined peace, by encouraging an illusion that Israel will go away. Israel is not going away. When the world recognizes that, then peace becomes possible,” Haley said. Shown here are former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, WJC President Ronald S. Lauder, and former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley. (photo credit: Noa Grayevsky)

The McGill Daily, a campus paper accused of antisemitism and known for singling Israel out for exclu-sive condemnation, has reaffirmed its “anti-Zionist stance” that sees pro-Israel commentaries banned from the publication. In its November 4 edition, the paper’s editorial board penned a “response” that characterized the State of Israel as a “racist” and “colonial movement” and

The growing rela-tionship between the National Basketball Association and the govern-ment of China has become a source of controversy. Importantly, the IHRA (International Holocaust Remembrance Association)’s definition of antisemitism asserts that “Denying the Jewish people their right to self-determi-nation, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeav-our” is antisemitism.”

The Daily’s own response claimed that “The content of the (Aarenau/Shapiro) letter is unconscionable in its dehu-manization of the Palestinian people. We therefore want to apologize to our readers for its pres-ence in our paper, and pro-vide the following response to it.”

Importantly, the Daily publicly acknowl-edged and thanked the anti-Israel groups Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (Please turn to following page)

Daily never responded to their submission, the stu-dents reached out to McGill’s Deputy Provost, Fabrice Labeau, saying that the Daily was in breach of its own policies and was therefore engaging in dis-crimination, due to its avowed ideological bias and failure to foster an open exchange of ideas. It’s praiseworthy that Provost Labeau informed the Daily that if it did not publish Mr. Aarenau and Shapiro’s rebuttal that an arbitration may result in the paper’s funding being withheld. The McGill Daily’s main source of revenue of over $300,000 comes from McGill University student’s fees. Not surprisingly, The Daily postured as if it was the vic-tim accusing Provost Labeau of “administrative interference”.

Under pressure, and with the threat that its funding could be jeopar-dized, the Daily published Mr. Aarenau and Shapiro’s rebuttal which explained that “Zionism is the nation-al movement of the Jewish

for helping the Daily “in composing this response.”

In so doing, the Daily openly acknowledged the role that anti-Israel groups have in producing its anti-Israel and antise-mitic “journalism”. So much for objectivity, fairness and political neutrality at the Daily.

For some time now, HonestReporting Canada (HRC) has taken the Daily to task for its bigoted anti-Zionist policy and for openly accusing Israel of “apartheid,” “pinkwashing”, “ethnic cleaning,” “imperial-ism” and for encouraging people to boycott, divest and sanction Israel. The Daily’s gratuitous attacks on Israel, along with its being in bed with anti-Israel groups, and its aversion to providing a platform to a pro-Israel, Zionist dis-course, has contributed to a toxic atmosphere at McGill. As a result, Jewish and pro-Israel students feel they’re being targeted and suffer from prejudice, stigmatiza-tion, and are being demo-nized.

Hitler could be trusted to abide by the rules, Brundage visited Germany in 1934 and returned to announce that the Nazi leadership had given him “unqualified assurances of non-discrimination.”

Brundage’s deputy, Charles Sherrill, publicly warned American Jewish boycott advocates that if they continued their protests, “we are almost certain to have a wave of anti-Semitism.” The boycott campaign was “overplaying the Jewish hand in America as it was overplayed in Germany before the present suppression and expulsion of the Jews were undertak-en,” Sherill asserted.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt could have blocked U.S. athletes from participating, as Jimmy Carter later would do in regard to the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow (to protest the Soviet occupa-tion of Afghanistan). But FDR opposed the boycott. His position in the 1930s was that maintaining cor-dial—sometimes friendly—diplomatic and trade rela-tions with Germany was more important than Hitler’s treatment of the Jews or

other human rights viola-tions.

It was not as if President Roosevelt was uninformed regarding Hitler’s intentions. The U.S. ambassador in Berlin, William Dodd, warned Washington that the Nazis were planning to use the Olympics “to rehabilitate and enhance the reputation of the ‘New Germany.’” Foreigners will “have only the usual tourist contacts” and are likely to come away doubting the veracity of “the Jewish persecution which they have previously read in their home papers,” Dodd predicted. FDR was not moved.

In addition to Jewish organizations, a number of prominent non-Jews also endorsed the boy-cott, including the gover-nors of Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, the NAACP, the Catholic War Veterans, and a significant number of well-known Christian cler-gymen.

The AJCongress also contacted individual ath-letes around the country, urging them to boycott the games. Only a handful of athletes did so, including Tulane University’s star sprinter, Herman Neugass; championship jumper Syd Koff, who had already qual-ified for the 1936 U.S. team; Harvard track and field stars Norman Cahners and Milton Green; speed skater Jack Shea, a Catholic, who had won a gold medal in the 1932 games; and the entire Long Island University Blackbirds basketball team, which was widely consid-ered the favorite to capture the gold in Berlin.

One prominent sports columnist, Frank Eck of the Associated Press, chastised the Blackbirds for mixing sports with politics. He accused the team of causing “ill feelings” by pro- (Please turn to following page)

fears were confirmed when he visited the White House shortly after the games. President Roosevelt told Wise that he had learned from two tourists who had attended the games “that the synagogues are crowded and apparently there is nothing very wrong in the situation [of Germany’s Jews] at present.”

Shocked, Wise tried to “explain to him how grave conditions were,” citing recent examples of “the ruthless and continuing oppression of the Jews.” It was to no avail, Wise later recalled. “He listened care-fully; but I could see that the tourists—whoever they were, the Lord bless them not—had made an impres-sion upon him.”

Eight decades later, “Shut up and dribble” remains the approach favored by those who place a premium on political or business interests. For those who value human rights above other consider-ations, however, cozying up to brutal dictators contin-ues to be a stain on America’s conscience.

testing the mistreatment of Germany’s Jews.

The Nazis prepared carefully before foreign visi-tors began arriving in the summer of 1936. Antisemitic literature was taken off the newsstands in Berlin. Physical assaults on Jews were kept to a mini-mum during the games.

Visiting journalists were duly impressed. The New York Times praised the German government for its "flawless hospitality." A Los Angeles Times correspon-dent wrote: "Zeus, in his golden days, never witnessed a show as grand as this." An editorial in that newspaper even predicted that the "spirit of the Olympiads" would "save the world from another purge of blood."

Many Americans derived satisfaction from the fact that an African-American track star, Jesse Owens, won four gold medals in Berlin. But the harm that was done out-weighed Owens’ achieve-ments. Hitler’s hosting of the Olympics gave him a way to soften his public image and allay the interna-tional community's concerns about his bigotry, violence,

Everyone who supports this is well-meaning. But you have to dig much deeper into Jewish history and the context.”

“Holocaust memori-als, very sadly, do not appear to do anything to hold back the spread of antisemitism. I’m not say-ing we shouldn’t have another one. But you’ve got to stop and think what it’s supposed to achieve. We have five or six in this country already. Across Europe and indeed right around the world there are hundreds of Holocaust memorials and yet, espe-cially in Europe, anti-semitism is on the rise. It is such a slur to accuse anyone who opposes that design and that location of being anti-Jewish and opposing remembrance of the Holocaust.”

Some 2500 stu-dents attend the Spanish River Community High School and it has one of the largest Jewish student bodies in the county. Half a million Jews live in Palm Beach County, making it the largest Jewish county in the United States. No Place For a Hitler Costume

The above incident in Palm Beach County came on the heels of another problem in Utah, when a child marched in a school parade dressed as Adolf Hitler. Not only that but with his parents watching, and not objecting, the stu-dent gave the Nazi salute towards minority children.

Neutral on The Holocaust?

William Latson, a high school principal in Boca Raton, Florida, told a parent that “not everyone believes the Holocaust happened”. He added that “I can’t say the Holocaust is a factual, historical event because I am not in the position to do so as a school district employ-ee...You have your thoughts, but we are a public school and not all of our parents have the same beliefs.”

Those comments led to his being fired by the Palm Beach County

The principal and a teacher at the school is Kaysville, Utah were both placed on administrative leave. United Jewish Federation Executive Director Alex Shapiro said, “It is horrible and mortify-ing that something like that was allowed to hap-pen and a child wasn’t asked to be removed from the parade.” Shapiro did, however, hope that the incident would turn into a positive by introducing the school and its faculty and students to an anti-bias curriculum developed by the Anti-Defamation League that seeks to com-bat hate and bigotry.

“The message”, said Shapiro, “is that we haven’t learned from our past.” The incident would,

Spanning five acres and offering access to seven distinct swimming pools, the Garden of the Gods Pool Oasis at Caesars offers guests a variety of engaging daytime experiences in a truly beautiful setting. At the heart of Caesar’s Palace, the pool complex is situated on three levels and is filled with Roman statues and fountains. Interested in a game of swim-up blackjack? Looking for a relaxing pool-side massage? This is truly a pool for everyone.

During our visit, we spent time on incredibly comfortable daybeds at the Temple Pool. With umbrel-las available for those who wish to stay in the shade, and plenty of sun for those who do not, the pool is a breath of fresh air. Daybed seats are located just steps from the pool, allowing for quick and frequent refuge from the Vegas summer heat. We enjoyed lunch by the pool, a real treat for any guest.

Other pools avail-able include Cove Beach, which has a Mediterranean vibe and high-energy music, the Neptune Pool, which includes DJs and large floaties, and The Apollo Pool, offering a more casual atmosphere and poolside games. Take your family to the Jupiter Pool, which has life-sized games, themed floaties, and weekend activ-ities for children. Finally, visit the Fortuna Pool for the swim-up blackjack tables or the Bacchus Pool for a more VIP experience. The quality of service at all of Caesar’s pools is incom-parable.

Today, it has grown to 17 locales which attract “A” list celebrities and dignitaries.

We were therefore very excited to visit this din-ing establishment at The Forum Shops at Caesars.

The best word to describe the dining experi-ence that accompanies every meal at Il Mulino New York is ‘elegance’. Everything from the ambiance and décor to the quality of the service provid-ed fits within that one word.

The cheese tray delivered to your table prior

Indeed, no trip to Las Vegas is complete with-out a visit to Il Mulino.

Schindler’s List Producer Passes Away

Lustig was born in 1932 and was imprisoned in Auschwitz and Bergen Belsen during the Holocaust. His father and grandmother, along with other members of his fami-ly, were killed by the Nazis.

His mother managed to sur-vive and the two were re-united after the war.

Lustig started his film career in Yugoslavia in the 1950s, and worked as a production supervisor on Sophie’s Choice, which was filmed partly in Yugoslavia.

In the 1980s he moved to Los Angeles where he met Steven Spielberg. The result was the 1994 Oscar winning film. Lustig also won an academy award in 2001 for Gladiator. He is the only person from present day Croatia to have ever won two academy awards.

“My number was 83317”, Lustig said in his emotional acceptance speech. “I’m a Holocaust survivor. It’s a long way from Auschwitz to this stage.”

In 2008 the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust honoured Lustig for his life time commitment to Holocaust education.

Branko Lustig, who won an Oscar for producing Schindler’s List, died recently at 87 in his home in Croatia.

Now in its tenth year Hallmark’s “Countdown to Christmas” movies have become part of the seasonal spirit. Last year 85 million views watched at least one of the 40 Christmas films that were shown starting in late October.

But Hallmark has been facing increasing crit-icism over its lack of diver-sity, almost always focus-ing on movies with straight Caucasian families cele-brating Christmas. In response this year Hallmark has expanded its viewing to include two Chanukah movies.

And so “Holiday Date” and “Double Holiday’ are now part of this year’s holiday celebrations. “We take pitches from all kinds of movies”, says Michelle Vicary, Crown Media’s vice-president of programming. “We talked about being pur-poseful this year and mak-

German lawyer who was assigned to adjudicate cases in which the Nazis doubted a person’s claim that he was not Jewish. Calmeyer convinced his superiors that people should be permitted to chal-lenge their claims to be Jewish if their grandparents could not be proved to be Jews.

Calmeyer, says Nussbaum, “allowed him-self to be cheated”. “In two-thirds of the cases, he decided in favor of the peti-tioner,” making it easier for Germans to claim they were not Jewish. In doing so he saved thousands of Jewish lives.

Hannelore Klein’s mother was half-Jewish, says Nussbaum, who mar-ried Rudi Nussbaum after the war. But Calmeyer ruled her mother “not Jewish” and the family was able to remove the yellow stars from their clothing. The Frank family was not as fortunate. (Please turn to following page)

Laureen Nussbaum was a childhood friend of Anne Frank but that is not really the theme of her book Shedding Our Stars: A Story of Hans Calmeyer and How He Saved Thousands of Families Like Mine.

“So much has been made of Schindler, who saved 1,200 Jews, and peo-ple really empathize with him and made him a hero”, she says of Oskar Schindler. “And I felt that Hans Calmeyer, who saved more people, is too unknown to the world....And I thought it was time that people knew about him”.

Democrat Eileen-Filler Corn was chosen speaker of the Virginia House-of-Delegates new Democratic majority. The New York born Corn is both the first woman and first Jew to hold that position.

Nussbaum, now 92, is concerned about the last-ing images of her childhood friend. In 1995 she wrote: “Memory easily fools you and my memory is coloured, inevitably, by the fact that she has become so famous. I always found her lively and keen, but would never have thought she would turn into this icon. I am

afraid the icon has become, for some people, a source of income and the person Anne is obscured by this. She stands as a symbolic figure upon whom the world can heap both its guilt and its commiseration."

THE HISTORY OF THE JEWS IN PORTUGAL goes back over 2000 years when the Romans forced the Jewish community into exile. At the end of the fifteenth century, when King D. Manuel prohibited Judaism, the Jewish community offi-cially disappeared from the country, leaving many in villages to practice a form of Judaism known as Crypto-Judaism. The film Sefarad, released on iTunes on November 15 and Amazon Prime on December 15, tells the most profound story of cul-ture, community and unification of the people who helped bring back to life a vibrant, Jewish com-munity in the northern Portuguese city of Oporto. It is in Oporto, where a small community of Ashkenazi Jews settles, and are soon joined by a Portuguese military officer converted to Judaism, who begins to travel, sometimes on horseback, seeking to bring back Judaism to those who had been practicing Crypto-Judaism. Crypto Jews were often misunderstood in their practices and not often accepted fully by Eastern European Jews. The film outlines the heroic project which ini-tially did not have a desired outcome; five cen-turies after King D. Manuel’s edict led to the mass exodus of the Jewish community, a new law pro-moted the Jewish community’s return to the land they had been forced to forsake. A decade ago Porto had no money to hire a rabbi or fix the syna-gogue roof. Today the Orthodox congregation of 400 has enough for a kosher hotel, a cantor, ritual baths, security guards and more.

Abdallah Chatila’s True Mitzvah

When European Jewish Association Chairman Rabbi Menachem Margolin heard about an auction that was taking bids on a collec-tion of Nazi memorabilia, he was appalled. “Selling such items should be no different to selling the personal items of Osama bin Laden, or Anders Brevik”, he wrote to leaders of all the main-stream German political parties.

But now Rabbi Margolin has changed his tune.

Swiss business-man Abdallah Chatila spent 600,000 euros on such items as a top hat worn by Hitler, German military leader Hermann Göring’s limited print edi-tion of Mein Kampf, sev-eral handwritten letters from Hitler to a child-hood friend, a box of sil-ver music, the typewriter Hitler’s assistant used to capture his texts. a sil-ver frame offered to SS commander Ulrich Graft and a baptismal gift to Göring’s daughter.
