The
JOB
INTERVIEW
Keys to Success
Appearance
does matter.
55% of another person’s
perception of you is based
on how you look.
- Kim Zoller, Image Dynamics
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Business Casual is best.
Clothes should be clean & ironed.
Shoes shined & polished.
Shoes and belt should match.
Socks should match pant color.
Avoid crop tops or low-cut blouses.
No Hats.
A few simple steps go a long way to create a professional image…
and it doesn’t have to be expensive!
Did you know blue clothing
gives the impression
that you can be trusted?
Give special attention to personal grooming & hygiene.
Don’t overdo aftershave, cologne or perfume.
Avoid excessive amounts of make-up.
Wear minimal jewelry.
Carry only the necessities in your pockets…
no ringing, jingling, or other distracting items.
No gum or candy during the interview.
In general, it’s better to err on being
overdressed than underdressed...
in fact, always dress
above the job you want!
Look others in the eye.
Shake hands firmly.
Try to relax and remember to smile.
Use good body language and posture.
Actively listen.
Turn off your cell phone.
Stand and shake hands when
someone new enters the room.
Remember these tips to display good manners… and confidence!
Be polite: say “Please” & “Thank you.”
Always address the interviewer as
“Mr.”/“Mrs.” /“Ms.” or “Sir”/“Ma’am”
Be positive in your dialogue.
Use proper grammar.
Avoid slang or swear words.
Answer questions honestly.
Don’t interrupt the interviewer.
Get a good night’s sleep.
Eat a light, nutritious meal.
Be sure you have accurate directions
to the interview location.
Bring extra copies of your resume
and references.
Be on time. 10 minutes early is ideal.
Be polite (even to the receptionist).
BE CONFIDENT. Look & feel your best!
Debrief immediately after the interview.
Make notes and reflect on the discussion.
Always send a thank you note within
24 hours reinforcing your interest.
A brief, typed or handwritten note is preferable.
Use discretion when considering a
follow-up e-mail or phone call.
Be patient, yet persistent (not a pest).
Anticipate and prepare for a second interview.
Remember, you
never get a second
chance to make a
first impression.
This is your
chance to shine!
