DOING BUSINESS AT THE JOCKEY CLUB ROOMS

Regularly used for board and committee meetings by The Jockey Club itself,

The Club is also available for non-member business events outside of its sacro-

sanct periods.

The Jockey Club Rooms offers a five-star standard conference and meeting ven-

ue close to London and Cambridge. It also offers a rare opportunity for your cli-

ents to be invited inside a prestigious private members club, which has been

the spiritual home of British horseracing for over 250 years.

Our 21 country house-style bedrooms add a wow-factor to any event, especially

when combined with an early morning tour of Jockey Club Estates’ extensive

training grounds on which upwards of 2,500 racehorses take their daily exer-

cise. Our team can also arrange a tour of The Club which includes an overview

of the art collection and fascinating tales from racing’s past.

The Jockey Club Rooms are located 1 1/2 hours drive from London and 25

minutes from Cambridge and the M11.

LUXURY ACCOMMODATION

The Jockey Club Rooms’ 21 country house style bedrooms have provided

members with a genuine home-away-from-home for several hundred years.

Outside of the sacrosanct members-only dates, bedrooms are available to non-

members who are looking for luxury accommodation in Newmarket.

All rooms are en suite, with most overlooking the lawn and walled gardens.

The feeling of peace and quiet is striking and the only sounds you may hear are

those of snorting horses at the neighbouring training yard early in the morning -

that and various chiming clocks.

The newly refurbished Deluxe Rooms are tasteful and luxurious.

The bathrooms are as big as the bedrooms with spacious walk-in drench

showers, under-floor heating and generously sized bath tubs.

By the front door there is a large selection of wellington boots for guests to use

on early morning tours of the Gallops.

A body of influence and a source of sustained investment in racing over a

period spanning four centuries, The Jockey Club as an organisation is known worldwide. There are records to show that at least six Prime

Ministers were also Members of The Jockey Club and for much of The Club’s existence many of its Members divided their time between

Parliament and conducting racing’s affairs from The Rooms.

In 1752 The Jockey Club leased a plot of land in Newmarket where a

Coffee House was constructed as a meeting place for the Club's Members. No doubt it would have followed the pattern of the London

coffee houses, which had already been popular establishments for more than half a century. On the expiration of the lease, The Jockey Club

bought the freehold, which is known today as ‘The Jockey Club Rooms'.

The Jockey Club was originally a social club aiming to promote good fellowship among racing and thoroughbred breeding enthusiasts. Their

main meeting place was the Star and Garter in Pall Mall although they also frequented other taverns of the time, in St James' Street and Hyde

Park.

THE ART COLLECTION

The Jockey Club’s collection of sporting art and racing memorabilia is the result of hundreds of years of gifts and bequests from members or their

families. The result is an eclectic and truly unique collection - the pictures

and artefacts united by a shared passion for racing which spans four centuries.

A POTTED HISTORY

Page 13: The Jockey Club Rooms Business 2016

TOURS OF THE ‘HQ’ OF BRITISH HORSERACING

Did you know that horseracing is the second most popular spectator

sport in Great Britain, after football? Whilst known as the ‘Sport of Kings’ its appeal has always been broad and over the centuries horseracing has

become a British sporting institution.

Newmarket is known as the ‘Headquarters of Horseracing’. It was James I who introduced the sport to this sleepy Suffolk village in the early

1600’s after having stumbled across the place one day whilst out hawking. Today 1 in 3 people in Newmarket are employed in the racing

industry and it is evident from the moment you approach that this is a one industry, if not a one horse, town.

Newmarket is not purely of interest to enthusiasts either – but to anyone

and everyone from art historians to overseas visitors and social

historians. Discover Newmarket provide bespoke and group tours.

In conjunction with Discover Newmarket your event can include:

A private tour of the historic Jockey Club Rooms and art collection Welcome drinks reception in the Morning Room

A grand dinner in The Jockey Club’s historic Dining Room Overnight accommodation in one of our country house style

bedrooms Early morning tour of The Jockey Club Estates training gallops

Visits to the National Stud and the National Horseracing Museum A private visit to one of Newmarket’s famous training yards

TESTIMONIALS

“We had the most perfect and enjoyable dinner at The Jockey Club Rooms

and thank you for taking so much trouble over all the details – many peo-

ple commented how slick the service was and how nice everyone was who

served us. The dinner was really delicious, the table with all the silver

looked fantastic and we had someone there who knew what all the cups

etc. represented which made it much more interesting.”

- Finance House

“The Jockey Club Rooms was a very special place to enjoy lunch and I

know we all found the tour, the history and stories of the Club fascinating.

The hospitality put on for us was exceptional and I must mention Greg

who did a great job and whose friendly and engaging personality went

down very well.”

- Media Company

“I have organised many events for Pigeon but I must say that the Jockey

Club Rooms would take some beating.

It is not just the setting but also the friendliness and efficiency of all of

your colleagues. Everything went according to plan and was

seamless. All the invitees went away very impressed with the service

they received.”
