PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

A quick update on the many behind the scenes happenings at BAYT: Our website upgrade had been in the works for some time. Thanks to Shimon and Avital in the office

for their hard work on this. Already a big improvement over the last version, we will continue to work to improve content and usability. Please visit www.bayt.ca often and share your comments with us to make it even better.

Our Technology Committee chaired by Maury Gilman, David Lithwick has been working overtime. Hardware and software upgrades. Optimizing ShulCloud. Even the website upgrade. Making things better to serve our members better.

The BAYT Crisis Campaign is well underway. Members of Fundraising Committee are reaching out to individual members but there is no need for you to wait. You can make your donation at https://www.bayt.ca/baytcovid.html. We have a long way to go and we need everyone to dig deep to help out.

The joint efforts of our Youth and HR Committees have paid off with the appointment of Howie Rosenberg as interim Youth Director. Thank you to everyone involved.

Thanks to our Rabbis and our COVID committee, we are adding additional minyan next week and we’re easing back into the main shul this Shabbat.

We’re finally back in the smachot business. All reports are that Jacobs Catering and our BAYT staff haven’t missed a beat with events held to date. Book with confidence.

Consider the BAYT for your next business meeting. My firm held its first in person partner meeting since March at BAYT last week. Our room was set up to perfection and Jacobs Catering provided a great breakfast and lunch.

Please join us Tuesday evening at 8:15 for our Goodbye Drive-By for Rabbi and Rebbetzin Spitz as well as Ezer and Chaya Diena. A Zoom presentation begins at 7:30.

There’s probably more but Shimon and Avital finally read me the riot act on getting this message in on time. Forgive any omissions.

Shabbat Shalom.

Jeffrey M. Brown

Weekly Halachah - R’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected]

Do we recite HaMapil before a nap? The berachah of HaMapil thanks G-d for enabling human beings to sleep; some understand it as expressing gratitude for our personal sleep, while others understand it as gratitude for the general gift of sleep to humanity. One does not recite HaMapil for any daytime sleeping; the berachah was enacted to be recited at night, when most people sleep. Even who goes to bed during the day, intending to sleep into the night, does not recite this berachah. Also, one who naps at night should not recite the berachah; the berachah was meant for extended sleep. However, some recommend that one think the words, lest one benefit from this world without thanking G-d. (Berachot 60b; Eishel Avraham miBatchetch Orach Chaim 239:1; b'Tzel haChachmah 5:166; Vayaan Yosef Orach Chaim 76; Yechaveh Daat 4:21; Piskei Teshuvot 239:1)

REOPENING UPDATE: B"H, minyan attendance has been steadily increasing as our members are becoming more comfortable with davening under the current conditions. But as minyanim continue to fill up, it is important that if you register for a minyan, ( that you keep that appointment, since you may be depriving someone else the opportunity to daven at the minyan. Also, on a sparse day, the minyan may be relying upon you to make the minyan. If you decide to not attend, please go back to the online signup (below) and delete your name from the list. NEW: We are pleased to announce that beginning Monday, August 17, we will be adding a third daily minyan at 7:30 am, Monday - Friday. The three minyanim will be as follows: 1st Minyan: 6:30 am - in the Turk BM/RJTH, except for Mondays and Thursdays, when minyan will begin at 6:20 am. 2nd Minyan: 7:30 am - in the Turk BM/RJTH 3rd Minyan: 8:30 am - outside in the Chuppah Garden Please register for all Shabbos and weekday minyanim using the "Sign Up Genius" app. Please click HERE, and you can decide for the entire week which services you'd like to participate in. Please note that priority for minyan registration is currently for BAYT members only. If you are a non-member, please do not register until Friday afternoon, at whichtime you are welcome to register if there is space in the minyan.

Wishing you a beautiful and healthy Shabbos,

Rabbi Daniel Korobkin

ANNOUNCEMENTS

5781 High Holy Days Seat Selection We very much appreciate your indulgence and understanding during these challenging times. At BAYT, we are committed to providing each of our members with a safe and meaningful prayer service over the Yamim Noraim (High Holy Days). We are also committed to ensure that every single adult member is accommodated for a seat in shul. We will also do our best to accommodate your children 10 years old and above, provided that they can sit with you during services. ALL minyanim require a seat selection form to be completed. We ask that if you are requesting a seat, that you abide by that request. If for any reason you make alternate plans, please notify the office so that we can free your seat for another member. Because of COVID-19, High Holy Day seating will follow an adjusted format. For two weeks (Aug. 17-30), seating will be open to full members only, after which we will begin selling tickets to guests and the general public. Seats may be reserved for family members from age 10 and above. Family members may be seated in a group “bubble” within the Main Shul, the other minyanim will have open spaced out seating. Minyanim will take place in 4 locations for all services: (1) The Main Shul, (2) Perlis Hall, (3) Turk Family Bais Medrash/Rebbetzin Judy Taub Hall and (4) The Chuppah Garden outdoors. Shacharis & Mussaf will take place in 2 shifts - an early minyan (approx.. 7 am) and a late minyan (approx.. 9:45 am). Out of a concern for your safety and limiting your potential exposure, we are endeavoring to keep all morning minyanim on Rosh Hashanah to 2-3 hours, and on Yom Kippur to 3-4 hours. When selecting seats: Please choose your preferred minyan location and time Please enter a 1st and a 2nd choice in the Notes section (Main Shul has 2 request boxes for seat selection). We will do our very best to accommodate your first choice. Each Minyan has been spaced out to allow at least 6 feet of spacing between each chair. Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis, including within the Main Shul where it is possible to select your seat. Each minyan will have a monitor to ensure the space is maintained. Please bring your own machzor. If you need help in procuring a machzor, please contact the office. In compliance with Ontario law, masks must be worn at all times. Thank You for your cooperation during these unprecedented times

PROGRAMS BAYT Crisis Campaign

Jeffrey Brown approached us to assume the role of Fundraising Chairs shortly after he became President of the BAYT. What we find inspiring about Jeffrey is that knowing the current financial situation, he still stepped forward and put his name on the BAYT ballot. No other member stepped forward. Covid was going on, so Jeffrey knew exactly what he was getting into. He could easily have removed his name knowing the massive crippling financial effects, but he did not. He cared and saw the path of the financial situation. Run-ning out of money was a real possibility. We could not stand on the sideline. It was time to join Jeffrey and other volunteers that really understood the seriousness of the situation. How serious is this crisis? We could be out of cash by October. We do not want OUR BAYT to become fi-nancially insolvent. We do not want to have to come back and ask again. Our BAYT members and donors have to own a deep sense of responsibility. That means that our members must make the BAYT the primary beneficiary of any charitable giving (excluding day school tuition) to the best of your abilities. Chuck English, Moishe Posner, Mitch Silverstein and Warren Bean are on the Fundraising Committee. Please reach out to any of us to discuss how you can assist the Crisis Campaign. Craig Guttmann & Rosy Rosenzweig Fundraising Chairs Member Quoted donating to the Crisis Campaign this week “The BAYT has been a huge part of our lives and our kids’ lives for many, many years. We care very deeply about our Shul. If the BAYT is in trouble, we are in trouble. We knew we needed to give as much as much as we possibly can - and that’s exactly what we did.”

PLEASE CLICK HERE TO DONATE TO OUR SPECIAL CRISIS CAMPAIGN

We are pleased to inform you after a thorough search and interview process, Howie Rosenberg has accepted the role of part time, interim Youth Director with the BAYT effective Thursday August 20th. Howie brings more than a decade of relevant experiences with NCSY and the entertainment and food industries as well a fun loving and dynamic personality. Howie has incredible energy and an impressive vision for BAYT Youth. He presented the Youth committee with amazing ideas to keep us connected as we gradually reopen. The Youth committee is confident Howie will be a tremendous asset to our shul providing meaningful, enriching and exciting programs for BAYT Youth. Stay tuned for a calendar of both virtual and in person events.
