ber, 1955. Since he became a memberof the crew in March, 1954, the Bem-bridge life-boat has been launched onservice 164 times and has rescued 90lives.

NOTES OF THE QUARTER

THE life-boat service can look backwith both satisfaction and gratitudeon the year 1963 as a whole. Life-boatssaved no fewer than 354 lives; the newinshore rescue boats saved 10 lives,and 224 lives were saved by shore-boats in services recognized by theInstitution. It is particularly gratifyingto be able to record that not a singlemember of the crew of any life-saving craft in the service of the Insti-tution lost his life on service. This isan indication of the skill and seaman-ship of the crews as much as of thequality of the vessels in which theyserve.

The number of lives rescued byshore-boats is in itself proof of thesuccess of the scheme which waslaunched jointly by the R.N.L.I. andthe Ministry of Transport for makinggreater and more co-ordinated use ofthe services of private boat ownerswho are prepared to go out to therescue.

INSHORE RESCUE BOATSThere will be a substantial increase

in the number of fast inshore rescueboats in service in 1964. In the sum-mer of 1963 boats of this type werepkced experimentally at four life-boat stations and at four other pointson the coast. Winter trials were carriedout at three places, and as a result ithas been decided to have 25 inshorerescue boats in service in 1964.

Twenty-three of the sites have beendefinitely chosen. The sites in Englandare the life-boat stations at Barrow,Bembridge, Gorleston, Hastings, Hum-ber, North Sunderland, Redcar, Skeg-ness, St. Ives, Torbay, Warmer andWells, in addition to Mudeford,

Southwold, West Mersea, Whitstableand Worthing. The four sites in Waleswill be the Pwllheli life-boat station,Aberdovey, Aberystwyth and St.Donat's. The Scottish sites will be theBroughty Ferry life-boat station andLargs.

KENNEDY LIFE-BOATAs a tribute to the late President of

the United States, John FitzgeraldKennedy, the Institution has decidedthat a life-boat to be stationed in theIrish Republic shall bear his name.This proposal has met with the appro-val of the Governments of the UnitedStates and of the Irish Republic. Thedecision was announced by theDeputy Chairman, Captain the Hon.V. M. Wyndham-Quin, in Washington,during a visit which he and a smalldelegation from the Institution paidto the United States in order to inves-tigate United States Coast Guard life-boats and methods of construction. Atthe ninth international life-boat con-ference a paper presented by theUnited States Coast Guard on theirnew 44-foot steel life-boat arousedgreat interest. A full report on thevisit to the United States will appearin the June number of THE LIFE-BOAT.

CLOSING OF BUILDING YARDA firm which has had a very long

association with the R.N.L.I. decidedin November to cease building woodenboats at Cowes. This is J. SamuelWhite & Co. Ltd. As long ago as 1951White's completed their hundredthlife-boat for the R.N.L.I. The firmwill be completing a number of life-boats which are at present under con-struction, and the last of these to bebuilt will be the one hundred and

thirty-fourth life-boat which White'shave provided for stations in variousparts of Britain and Ireland.

NEW FORM FOR JOURNALReaders will have noticed that this

number of THE LIFE-BOAT is strikinglydifferent in appearance from earliernumbers. Both the type and the gen-eral layout are more in accordance

with modern practice, and the coveris considered to be rather more inkeeping with current ideas of design.The practice of having a photographof a different coxswain in each number,which is believed to be a popular one,will of course be continued, and as inthe present number it will appearimmediately after the table ofcontents.

RESCUE BY BOARDING BOAT IN NEAR GALE

AT 6.55 on the evening of Monday,2nd September, 1963, the mechanic ofthe Valentia, County Kerry, life-boatstation, Joseph Houlihan, saw a smalldinghy capsize about 600 yards fromthe Life-boat storehouse, where he wasworking at the time.

A near gale was blowing from thenorth and the sea was rough, but theweather was fine and clear. It was anhour and a half after high water on anexceptionally high spring tide, whichwas ebbing at two knots.

Rowed to Capsized DinghyMechanic Houlihan immediately

launched the station boarding boat,which is 12 feet 6 inches in length, androwed towards the capsized dinghy.The dinghy was already about 200yards north-north-east of ReenagiveenPoint.

When he reached the scene he foundtwo men in the water. One of them hadvirtually collapsed and he succeeded in

dragging him into the boarding boat.The other survivor, who was a clergy-man, was too heavy for the mechanicto pull on board the boat. He thereforetold the clergyman to hang on to thetransom.

Hanging on to TransomThe return trip was particularly

difficult. The man who had beentaken on board was unable to give anyhelp; there was a rough following sea;and the man hanging on to the tran-som caused the boat to trim by thestern.

Mechanic Houlihan became nearlyexhausted himself, but he managed tobeach the boat and land the two survi-vors near Reenagiveen Point. He laterreturned to the scene of the casualtyand recovered the capsized dinghy.

For this rescue the Institution'sbronze medal for gallantry wasawarded to Mechanic Joseph Houli-han.

RESCUE FROM CLIFF IN FULL GALE

AT 11.10 p.m. on the night of SaturdayI4th September, 1963, Mr. R. Watt,the honorary secretary of the Mallaiglife-boat station, learnt from the policethat a number of people were trappedon a cliff in Loch Duich. A quarter ofan hour later the Mallaig life-boatE.M.M. Gordon Cubbin, which is oneof the 52-foot Barnett type, put outwith Second Coxswain Charles Hen-derson in command. She took herboarding boat in tow.

Near Gale BlowingA near gale was blowing from the

south, the sea was rough, and heavy

rain caused poor visibility. The tidewas half ebb.

Second Coxswain Henderson fol-lowed a course through the Sound ofSleat to Glenelg Bay and then throughKyle Rhea to Loch Alsh and themouth of Loch Duich. By the time thelife-boat had reached Loch Duich afull gale was blowing and visibility hadbecome very much worse. There areno shore navigational aids in the area,and Second Coxswain Henderson pro-ceeded slowly through the narrowentrance to Loch Duich, using para-chute flares and a searchlight.

embarked a local man namedMcDonald, who knew just where thepeople were trapped. She then madefor a position where she anchoredabout 80 yards off shore.

Climbed up CliffDuring a lull the boarding boat man-

ned by two members of the life-boat's crew, R. Mackenzie and R.Rimmer, managed to get ashore. Thetwo men climbed about 200 feet up thecliff, which was illuminated by para-chute flares. They then guided fiveadults and two children down thecliff to the boarding boat.

Weather conditions were such that itwould have been unsafe for the board-ing boat to be rowed back to the life-boat. A rocket line was therefore firedfrom the life-boat and a veering linepassed to the shore. The survivors andthe two members of the crew were

then hauled back to the life-boat fromthe boarding boat in two trips. Thesecond trip was completed at 4.30 a.m.The survivors were given hot soup andlanded at Altracervy.

The life-boat then made for OrnsayIsland to search for a small boat whichwas missing. She failed to find the boatand finally reached her station at 2.30p.m. on Sunday, I5th September.

Institution inscribed on vellum wasaccorded to Second Coxswain CharlesHenderson.

Vellum service certificates were is-sued to the other members of thecrew: David McMinn, George EdwardLawrie, D. Henderson, R. Rimmer,R. Mackenzie, I. Campbell and G.Christie, and to Mr. McDonald.

FOUR MEN RESCUED FROM FRENCH TRAWLER

AT 5.50 a.m. on 2yth October, 1963,Valentia radio station informed thehonorary secretary of the Youghal life-boat station, Commander B. Arbuth-not, that the French trawler Fee desOndes was ashore in Youghal Bay. Theposition given, which was not thoughtto be correct, indicated that the trawlerwas probably to the east of Youghal.

There was a strong breeze blowingfrom the south-east, and the sea wasrough outside the harbour. It wasmisty, and visibility was reduced toabout a mile. It was half an hour beforelow water.

At 6.29 the Youghal life-boat Her-bert John, which is one of the 35-foot6-inch Liverpool type, was launchedwith instructions to search to the east-ward.

At 6.40 the Civic Guards at Ard-more located the casualty in ArdmoreBay, and at 7.5 the new position wasrelayed to the Youghal life-boat by theBallycotton life-boat.

Rough Passage of Seven MilesAfter a rough passage of seven miles

the Youghal life-boat reached thetrawler at 7.40, She found that of thecrew of nine, seven had already landedon the beach in an inflatable dinghy.The master and one member of thecrew had remained aboard.

There were two other men on board,a Youghal skipper and a member ofthe rocket brigade, who had boardedthe trawler by means of the inflatabledinghy in order to try to give help.

The Fee des Ondes was lying about

300 yards from Ardmore beach androlling heavily with her bows towardsthe shore. Ardmore Strand is a sandybeach exposed to winds from the eastand south-east. There is a patch ofrocks, into which the trawler was laterdriven as the tide made.

The life-boat anchored to seawardof the port quarter of the trawler inabout a fathom and a half. She veeredalongside four or five times, but themaster refused to abandon his ship atthis stage, as a salvage tug was expected.

Tried to Hold Off RocksIn the meantime the coxswain of the

Helvick Head life-boat John and LucyCordingley had been told that theFrench trawler was in distress. Thelife-boat left her station at 7.15 andarrived on the scene about 8.30. Bothlife-boats attempted to hold the trawleroff the rocks but they were unable todo so and had to abandon their efforts.The Helvick Head life-boat was thenrecalled and reached her station at 1.15.

About eleven o'clock the trawler,pivoting on a rock, slewed around 120°to port and drove towards the shoreinto more rocks. Her port side wasnow exposed to the sea, she was holed,and she began to list dangerously to

port. The master then decided toabandon ship.

Swinging Trawl BoardsThe Youghal life-boat veered down

on to the weather side of the trawler,which was still rolling heavily. Cox-swain Richard Hickey found his taskwas made even more difficult by thetrawl boards, which were swinging fromthe gallows. There was considerabledanger from rocks, over which in placesthere was less than a fathom and a halfof water, and the life-boat was in factdamaged by the trawl boards.

Jumped into Life-boatAbout 11.15 f°ur men jumped into

the life-boat, which then hove off andweighed anchor. She had a rough re-turn passage to Youghal, which shereached at 12.30 p.m. On her returnit was found that the stemhead fittingbelting, guardrail stanchions and rud-der were all damaged.

For this service the bronze medal forgallantry was awarded to CoxswainRichard Hickey. Medal service certifi-cates were issued to the other membersof the crew; M. Murphy, M. Hennes-sey, J. Murphy, C. Hennessy, P. Hen-nessey, and J. Delaney. Additionalservice allowances were paid.

RESCUE FROM DUTCH VESSEL ON FIRE

AT 8 p.m. on Sunday, iyth November,1963, the honorary secretary of theMumbles life-boat station, Captain C.E. Mock, received an anticipatory mes-sage from the Mumbles coastguard.This stated that the motor vessel Kiloof Amsterdam had reported a fire in

her deck cargo of sodium drums.There had been heavy explosions, butthe ship was not in immediate dangerand was making for Swansea.

About an hour later, at 9.12, thehonorary secretary of the Padstowstation, Mr, A. G. Trembath, received

a similar message from the Hartlandcoastguard. The position of the Kilowas then given as 45 miles north-westof Padstow. Hartland coastguard alsoconsulted the honorary secretary atAppledore, Captain P. Brennan, andit was decided that the Padstow life-boat should be launched.

Ousting to Storm ForceMaroons were fired at 9.55, and half

an hour later the Padstow life-boat,Joseph Hiram Chadwick, which is oneof the 52-foot Barnett class, slipped hermoorings. A south-westerly gale wasblowing, gusting to storm force (force10), and the sea was very rough. Therewas fierce rain with hail squalls, andvisibility was poor. It was one hourbefore low water.

Coxswain John Murt steered to thenorth-west in the hope of interceptingthe Kilo, but at 11.12 a message wasreceived that theKilo's position was 14miles from Lundy Island. Mr. A. G.Trembath and the Hartland coastguardconsulted again and it was clear thatthe Padstow life-boat was engaged ina fruitless chase. She was thereforerecalled at 11.45 and reached herstation at 2.45 the next morning.

Second Life-boat LaunchedMeanwhile a decision had also been

taken to launch the Tenby life-boat.The assistant honorary secretary, Mr.G. Reason-Jones, arranged for themaroons to be fired at 12.40, and tenminutes later the Tenby life-boat,Henry Comber Brown, which is one ofthe 46-foot 9-inch Watson class, waslaunched. Coxswain W.R.Thomas set acourse towards the Helwicklight-vessel.

As the life-boat cleared the lee atCaldey Island conditions grew appreci-ably worse. The wind increased to

storm force and the waves were sometwenty to twenty-five feet in height.At one moment a very heavy sea brokeon board. It carried away the canvasscreen doors of the wheelhouse andbuckled the after cabin door.

Severe ThunderstormIn the early hours of the morning a

third life-boat was launched. This wasthe Mumbles boat, William Gammon -Manchester and District XXX. Maroonswere fired at 2.48, but there wassuch a severe thunderstorm thatsome of the crew did not hear them.With the help of the police CaptainMock succeeded in contacting thecrew, and the life-boat, which is oneof the 46-foot 9-inch Watson class, waslaunched at 3.20. About the time oflaunching the Mumbles coastguardrecorded a maximum wind speed of64 knots.

Coxswain Thomas, in command ofthe Tenby life-boat, realized that hehad little chance of catching up withthe Kilo unless she were stopped orslowed down by another explosion. AShackleton aircraft of the Royal AirForce was flying over the Kilo anddropping flares, but although the cox-swain could see the flares he could notpick out the casualty. At 4.7 helearnt that the Mumbles life-boat hadsighted the Kilo, but he decided topress on in the hope that he might beable to give some assistance.

Waves Over Twenty FeetThe Mumbles life-boat also had an

extremely severe passage. Waves wereover twenty feet in height and at timesthe Mumbles light was hidden by thespray.

It was at 4.7 that Coxswain LionelScott, in command of the Mumbles

life-boat, first sighted the Kilo in thelight of flares dropped by the Shackle-ton. He estimated that he must beabout half a mile off. The Dutchvessel was a mass of flames and therewas fire over the sea ahead and down-wind of her.

Coxswain Scott decided to go along-side the port quarter of the Kilo, and hestationed members of his crew forwardso that they could help take off theDutch vessel's crew. As they ap-proached the Kilo spitting flames madeit impossible for the life-boat crew toremain forward, and they had to returnto the cockpit.

Coxswain Scott made his first run inat 4.11. A heavy sea threw the life-boat under the Kilo's counter and hewas forced to overshoot.

Mass of Spitting FlamesHe then made a second run, but the

Kilo sheered heavily to starboard andshipped a heavy sea. This caused thedeck cargo to explode in a mass ofspitting flames. At that moment the life-boat surged towards the burning welldeck of the Kilo, and it was only byquick and correct use of the helm andengines that Coxswain Scott was ableto keep the life-boat clear.

Coxswain Scott began to manoeuvrefor a third run in, but the flames thendied down and the master of the Kilodecided not to abandon ship but tomake for the Mumbles. About 4.50the Kilo beached in Mumbles Baywith the life-boat alongside her portquarter. The Swansea pilot vesselSeamark, which is equipped with fire-fighting apparatus, was also standingby, but she could not help, as anywater directed on the burning sodiumwould only have fanned the flames.

Fire Spread to HoldsAfter about three quarters of an

hour the fire aboard the Kilo increasedagain. It started to spread to the holds,which contained whisky, grease andacetone, and there were further ex-plosions. The master, believing theship was now in serious danger ofblowing up, decided his crew shouldbe taken off. There was another suddenburst of flame. Coxswain Scott had toback off and return to lie alongside theKilo's stern. The Kilo's crew weresheltering aft, and they were all takenoff successfully by the Mumbles life-boat.

Meanwhile the Tenby life-boat wasin some difficulty, with trouble in theoil pump of the port engine. Cox-swain Thomas, knowing that the Kilowas being escorted into MumblesBay by the Mumbles life-boat, de-cided to make for Swansea. By 6.20the life-boat was in Mumbles Roadsand at 8.15 she secured in Swanseasouth dock.

Torrential Rain ContinuedWhen the tide made, the Kilo was

seen to refloat, and Coxswain Scottvolunteered to put some of the Kilo'screw aboard to let go an anchor, butthe master decided that the risk of anexplosion was too great.

The torrential rain continued andthere was a thunderstorm, and by 6.30the fire on board the Kilo had begunto die down. The pilot vessel Seamarkmanaged as a result to get a lineaboard and to begin towing. The Kilo'smaster then asked Coxswain Scott toput him and his chief engineer back onboard.

The Kilo was able to move under herown power and she was berthed inSwansea Dock at 7.55. At 8.12 the

Mumbles life-boat landed the remain-der of the Kilo's crew at Swansea Dock.Some idea of the weather conditionsmay be gained from the fact that thecoxswain had to use the drogue whileentering the lock.

Silver Medal AwardedFor this service the silver medal for

gallantry was awarded to CoxswainLionel Derek Scott of the Mumbles.

The thanks of the Institution in-scribed on vellum were accorded to theother eight members of the Mumblescrew: Second Coxswain W. Davies;Motor Mechanic R. Gammon; Assist-ant Mechanic W. Tucker; SignalmanJ. Bailey; K. Kostromin; W. Parsons;T. Randall; J. Whitford.

Letters of appreciation were sentthrough the honorary secretaries to thecrews of the Padstow and Tenby life-boats.

SEVEN MEN RESCUED FROM TRAWLER AGROUND

FOUR minutes after midnight onI3th December, 1963, the coxswain ofthe Caister life-boat, J. R. Plummer,learnt from the Gorleston coastguardthat a vessel appeared to be in troubletwo miles from the North Denes look-out. Coxswain Plummer decided to godown to the beach to investigate. Hehad barely decided to do so when at12.10 a "Mayday" signal was putout by the Lowestoft trawler LochLorgan. She gave her position as offthe north-west Scroby buoy and askedfor life-boat assistance.

This message was passed two min-utes later by the Gorleston coast-guard to the Caister honorary secretary,Mr. M. C. McAvoy. The coastguardalso told Mr. McAvoy that the cox-swain had gone down to the beach.

Vessel Apparently AgroundAs he approached the life-boat house

Coxswain Plummer saw a red rocket,and he could also distinguish thelights of a vessel apparently aground onthe Middle Caister shoal. He consultedMr. McAvoy, and it was decided tolaunch the life-boat.

The maroons were fired at 12.20,and ten minutes later the Caisterlife-boat Jose Neville, which is one ofthe 35-foot 6-inch Liverpool type,was launched. The wind was fromthe east-north-east and was gusting togale force. There were squalls ofhail and sleet. The sea was roughwith a heavy swell and visibility waspoor. It was an hour before low waterand the tide was setting along thecoast in a north-north-westerly direc-tion at about one knot.

Firing Red RocketsCoxswain Plummer decided there

was not enough water for him to crossthe bank near the Caister Elbow buoy,and he therefore decided to pass roundthe unlit South Caister buoy beforeheading in the general direction of thenorth-west Scroby buoy.

At 12.44 he learnt from the coast-guard that the trawler was still off thenorth-west Scroby buoy and wasfiring red rockets. Eleven minuteslater the life-boat fired a parachuteflare. This showed the trawler to beaground in heavy breaking seas with

her bows to the south-west. She had aheavy list to starboard and was rollingand pounding.

Guided by what he could see by thelight of the parachute flare, Coxswain

Plummer made a quick decision. Thiswas that the best approach would beon the port or weather side of thetrawler. He knew the starboard side ofthe wreck would afford some slight lee

from both wind and tide, but theextent of the trawler's list, the fact thather lee rail was awash and the mannerin which she was rolling and poundingmade it almost certain that the life-boat would be severely damaged if heapproached the trawler from the star-board side. It was clear that if thetrawler's crew were to be rescuedspeed was essential. Coxswain Plum-mer knew that the shoal was compara-tively steep: he realized that thetrawler was drawing considerably morewater than the life-boat; but he tookthe calculated risk of running straightin bows first along the port side of theLoch Lorgan.

He had to depend on his ownjudgement and the seamanship of hiscrew to ensure that the bow and sternlines were got aboard the trawler at thefirst attempt. The crew did, in fact,succeed and about 1.5 the life-boatsecured alongside the Loch Lorgan.There were seven men aboard thetrawler, and one at a time theyjumped into the life-boat.

After Cockpit FilledSeas were breaking continually over

the stern of the life-boat, and theengines had to be kept running halfastern with occasional bursts of fullastern for her position to be held.More than once the after cockpit rilledand one particularly heavy sea filledthe life-boat right up to the canopy,causing her to surge ahead. Two mem-bers of the crew had to hang on to thestern line without tying it to thebollard so that they could let go orhaul in as necessary. Otherwise the linewould certainly have parted and thelife-boat would have been in seriousdanger.

The life-boat remained alongside

the trawler in the most difficult anddangerous conditions for some tenminutes. The last man to abandonship cast off the head rope beforejumping and Coxswain Plummerawaited his opportunity before order-ing the stern line to be cut and backingaway at full speed. The moment thelife-boat's bow was clear of the traw-ler's stern she was swept broadside onto the westward by the wind and tide.She was in grave danger of groundingon the shoal north of the wreck, wherethe seas were breaking very heavily.With excellent judgement CoxswainPlummer went full ahead and puttinghis helm hard to port was just able toclear the starboard quarter of thetrawler as the life-boat slowly turnedand made to seaward.

Driving Inside ShoalThe life-boat made for Gorleston,

which she reached at 2.15. Thesurvivors were landed and the life-boat then continued to the Fish-market, as she could not be safelymoored alongside the life-boat slipway.The life-boat crew then went home fora rest and a change of clothing.

At 4.10 in the morning the look-out in the Caister life-boat house toldthe coxswain that the Loch Lorganappeared to have refloated on therising tide and was driving south insidethe shoal towards the beach.

The life-boat crew were thereforesummoned and drove to Gorleston bycar. The Gorleston police had beenasked to collect the crew of the LochLorgan from the Sailors' Home andtake them to the life-boat so that theycould have a chance of reboardingtheir vessel. The life-boat put outat 5.20 and found the Loch Lorgan

grounded on the north beach at Yar-mouth. She was lying broadside on inheavy breaking seas and as there couldbe no question of putting the crewaboard the life-boat returned to herstation,which she finally reached aty. 15.

For this service the bronze medal forgallantry was awarded to Coxswain J.R. Plummer. The thanks of the Insti-

tution inscribed on vellum were accor-ded to Assistant Motor Mechanic F.King, who was deputizing for theMotor Mechanic, and medal servicecertificates were issued to the othersix members of the crew: Second Cox-wain A. Brown, Acting Bowman R.Read, D. Woodhouse, G. Codman,J. Brown and H. Pascoe.

RICHARD WAKELEY, aged 12, of PermCottage, Nore Road, Portishead, isprobably the youngest editor of a nau-tical review to donate his sales profitsto the Institution.

He writes, illustrates and distributescarbon copies of the Nore Review, andhis November issue included an articleon the new 48-foot 6-inch prototypelife-boat at Yarmouth, with diagramsto explain the self-righting mechanism.

He wrote recently, "The profits(subscriptions and contributions fromreaders) are now nearing the los. mark.When I reach that amount I will sendit to you, probably in a month or two'stime."

Ship halfpennies are exchanged forbiscuits and lemonade when childrenaged six to nine attend a Life-boatClub in Hove on Saturday mornings.The club is run by Mrs. Sherwood of18 Gheton Avenue, Hove 4. Mrs.Sherwood, a former member of theWRNS, collects the ship halfpenniesin her life-boat box.

On most days when rain fell during1963 Miss Marjory Creech, of 22Eastwood Road, St. Anne's Park,Bristol, and a group of her friendspaid a penny to life-boat funds. By theend of the year they were able to send£i IDS. to the Institution.

The Institution's linen glass clothshowing life-boat stations in the BritishIsles was used as a map in a treasure

hunt organized by the Ladies' Life-boat Guild at Ayton and Reston,Scotland. Competitors bought flagsfor 3d. each and put them on the mapat the points where they thought thetreasure was hidden.

A patient named Miss Grover whois bedridden in St. Thomas' Hospital,Haverfordwest, contributed ys. fromthe Christmas sale of two dolls whichshe dressed. Miss Grover has been inhospital for 13 years.

At Hornsey paperback books arebeing sold in public houses at gd. each.Customers are invited to bring theirown paperbacks to be sold and to putthe money for those which they buyinto a life-boat collecting box. Onepub collected £2 js. $d. in three weeks.

Other fund-raisers at Hornsey haverecently given £25 to the Institution.Mr. and Mrs. F. Hawen, of WoodlandGardens, Muswell Hill, held a "Gar-den Beauty" evening at their home.Visitors brought — and bought — houseand outdoor plants, seeds and bulbs.

Members of the Stanmore Ladies'Life-boat Guild have demonstratedthe profit that can be made from acapital investment of 55. They weregiven 55. each and asked to see howmuch they could make for branchfunds. One member raised over £12from making orlon hats and anothercollected a similar amount from cov-ering coat hangers.

SIR. - This is a true account of tworather unprofessional fishermen whobit off more than they could chew lastweekend.

We understood from a local wise-acre that it was not too bad for a tripfrom Teignmouth to Exmouth Bar tofish the flatties. The wind was Force 2and we failed to notice the scud in thesky.

Feeling full of confidence, we loadedthe Norwegian fibreglass dory with allthe bits and pieces of fishing gear anda 20 Ib. sea anchor. We failed to takeflares or Very pistol.

In a fairish sea we made good timeto beyond Dawlish Warren. Thediesel engine sounded strong enoughfor a non-stop Channel crossing.

Then the mighty old sea started toget uppish and the wind turned into agale. With waves of up to 15 feet weturned her head into the teeth of it.

From somewhere among the rollers

there came a king wave, curling itslip and snarling at the little craft.When it had passed we were half-fullof water and very wet. By this time wewere some 600 yards off ExmouthBell buoy.

Then we heard the cough of a dyingengine, the wicked sound of a fly-wheel doing battle with the sea in theboat, and the realization that water hadbeen sucked in the air intake. A fewmore turns and she cut.

Beam on, we took a terrific beating.At that moment we remembered theheavy anchor and having cut away thefishing lines gathered round the anchorrope we got it over, and after a seemingage her head came round and the angrycoasters hit us nonstop stem on. Upand up and over and down the troughsseemed further at each attack.

Now for help, or so we thought.Have you ever tried to signal theshore with rags on oar ends ? Wecould see the cars and the odd people,but try as we did, no one saw us.

For an hour we crashed and twistedin the boiling morass and then with thewind shrieking its wildest tune so far,we realized we were being driven onthe bar. Soon she would beach withthe wild sea behind and the cut before.

We pulled in the anchor and let herbe driven. The question was, whatwould happen to an 18-foot boat with aheavy diesel engine when buffeted ona sandbank.

We got over the side and held her aswell as we could against a beam attack.For over an hour we held her, and atlast, with a rush, we were over the barand sprawling on the bottom boards.

We used two small oars as paddlesand helped the wind blow us ashore.

Quite by accident we landed right onthe life-boat strip from whence we hadhoped to see help, and it was then wesaw just how little one can see in a realgale.

The Harding dory was pumpedout. At the first swing the enginestarted, and she was pushed out intosurf and taken down to the harbour.

Not a mark, not a scratch to beseen. Thank God for the men whodesigned her, for her exact type hasbeen in constant North Sea use for 15years. There is no doubt that withoutthe fantastically tough seaworthiness

of this craft there would have beentwo more entries in the obituary col-umn of the newspapers.

The lessons we have learned areobvious. We hope others will learnfrom reading this. The sea is, indeed,a good friend, but give her all the res-pect you can muster, even if it doeslook perfect.

Bridlington, Yorkshire. At 9.15 a.m.on 4th November, 1963, the honor-ary secretary was told that ten fishingvessels were at sea in worsening weatherconditions. By 1.25 p.m. the wind hadincreased to near gale force from the east-south-east and as the fishing vessels werebeginning to arrive off the harbour it wasdecided to launch the life-boat. The life-boat Tillie Morrison, Sheffield II waslaunched at 1.45 in a rough sea. Thetide was flooding. The life-boat escortedthe fishing vessels to Bridlington harbourand then returned to escort two 65-footR.A.F. pinnaces, one of whose engines hadbroken down. The life-boat returned toher station at 4.15.

ESCORTED TO SAFETYAt 8.15 a.m. on loth November, 1963,

the coastguard told the honorary secretarythat the m.f.v. Eileen had not returned tothe harbour since leaving at two o'clockthe previous afternoon. In view of theworsening weather conditions and thefishing vessel's previous engine troublethelife-boat Tillie Morrison, Sheffield //waslaunched at 8.50 in a near east-south-east-erly gale and a rough sea. The tide wasflooding. The life-boat located the vesselthree miles south of the harbour andstood by her until high water. The fishingvessel was then escorted to the harbour.The life-boat returned to her station at10.30.

TOWED TO GORLESTONCuller-coats, Northumberland. At

7.15 p.m. on lyth November, 1963, amessage was received from the coast-guard by the new Cullercoats life-boat,the Sir James Knott, whilst on passage toher station from Cowes, Isle of Wight,that a motor cruiser had broken down

with engine trouble one mile north ofGorleston. There was a southerly gale anda very rough sea. The life-boat alteredcourse, found the motor cruiser with acrew of two and took her in tow to Gorles-ton. The owner of the motor cruiser madea gift to the life-boat crew.

THREE MEN RESCUEDFiley, Yorkshire. At 1.47 p.m. on

I3th October, 1963, the coastguard toldthe honorary secretary that a motorvessel had broken down four and a halfmiles off Gristhorpe and had fired threedistress flares. The life-boat The ha &Penryn Mils ted was launched at 2.5 andsteamed to the position in a near gale forcewindfromthe west-north-west and a roughsea. It was high water. The life-boat foundthe motor vessel Silver Star, which hadfirst been sighted by a R.A.F. helicopterfrom Leconfield. The three men aboardher, who had been on a fishing trip, weretaken on board the life-boat and theSilver Star, which had engine trouble,was taken in tow to Scarborough harbour.The life-boat reached her station at sixo'clock.

SEVEN WALKERS MISSINGAt 9.40 p.m. on spth October, 1963,

the coastguard told the honorary secretarythat a party of seven people, walking fromCayton to Filey, were missing. The coast-guard asked if the life-boat could helpwith the search of the foreshore and theback of the Brigg. At 10.15 tne life-boatThe Isa & Penryn Mihted was launchedin light southerly airs and slight sea. Thetide was flooding. The coxswain, using thesearchlight and parachute flares, locatedthe party and reported their position to acliff rescue party. When the seven peoplewere safely taken up the cliff the life-boatreturned to her station at three o'clock thefollowing morning.

FISHING COBLE AT SEAAt 11.15 a-m- on 3otn October, 1963,

the coxswain informed the honorary sec-retary that the local fishing coble Pilot Mewas at sea in very bad weather, and thecoxswain thought that she would havedifficulty in returning ashore. The life-boat The ha & Penryn Milsted waslaunched at 11.40 in a moderate to strongsouth-easterly breeze and a rough sea. Itwas two hours before high water. The life-boat found the fishing coble north-east ofFiley Brigg, picking up the last of herlines. She was escorted back to Filey.Because of the high tide and heavy seas itwas not possible for the life-boat to berehoused until five o'clock.

ESCORT FOR FOURAt 9.30 a.m. on 4th November, 1963,

the coastguard informed the honorarysecretary that four fishing cobles were atsea and that the weather was rapidlydeteriorating. There was a near gale fromthe east-south-east with a rough sea. Thetide was ebbing. The life-boat The ha &Penryn Milsted launched at 10.5 and es-corted the two cobles to safety. The life-boat returned and found the coble Joanand Mary with engine trouble. The coblewas towed to Filey and the life-boat putout again and soon found the last coble,Trump, just north of Flamborough. TheTrump was escorted safely back to Fileyand the life-boat returned to her station,arriving at 2.35 p.m.

FISHERMEN'S RELIEFAt 1.30 p.m. on i8th November, 1963,

the coastguard informed the honorary sec-retary that twelve fishing cobles were atsea in deteriorating weather. There was astrong gale from the south-west with avery rough sea. The tide was flooding.The life-boat The ha & Penryn Milstedwas launched at 1.50 with the bowman incommand and proceeded to the Bempton-Flamborough area where it was knownsome of the boats would be fishing. All thefishing boats were escorted safely intoharbour and the life-boat returned to herstation at 7.30. The fishermen said after-wards how relieved they were to see thelife-boat as they had not encounteredsuch rough and broken seas for manyyears.

TO THE HAVEN

Flamborough, Yorkshire. At 10.30a.m. on 4th November, 1963, the cox-swain informed the honorary secretarythat a fishing coble was still at sea inrapidly deteriorating weather conditions.At n o'clock the life-boat FriendlyForester launched in a near east-south-easterly gale and rough sea. The tide wasebbing. Visibility was poor due to heavyrain. Because it was low water the life-boatwas man-handled the last 30 yards to thewater. She met the coble Provider andescorted her to the Haven. The coxswainwas then told that a coble from Filey wasstill out two miles north of the NorthLanding. An offer of an escort to Fileywas made to the skipper of the coble buton reaching the position given the cox-swain was told that the Filey life-boathad already found the coble and wouldescort her to Filey. The life-boat returnedto her station at 2.30 p.m.

SOS FROM HULL

Humber, Yorkshire. At about 4.50p.m. on 8th October, 1963, the cox-swain received a telephone message fromthe Hull agents of the S.S. Baron Berwickasking if a doctor could be taken to theship as there was a sick man on board.The ship's agents then telephoned thedoctor who told the coxswain when hewould be available. Half an hour later thelife-boat City of Bradford III was launchedwith the doctor on board. The tide hadflooded for an hour and a half; there wasa moderate breeze from the south-westand a slight sea. The life-boat came upwith the Baron Berwick, of 2,800 tons, onpassage from Middlesbrough to Hull,two and a half miles south-south-east ofSpurn lighthouse. The doctor was puton board at six o'clock and after treatingthe patient returned on board with him at6.30. On the return journey the man hadto be restrained from leaving the life-boat's cabin by the doctor and membersof the crew. The life-boat arrived atGrimsby at 7.40 where an ambulancesoon arrived and transferred the patientto hospital. The life-boat returned to herstation at 8.45. The owner of the BaronBerwick made a donation to the funds ofthe Institution.

WATERLOGGED PINNACE

At 7.14 p.m. on ifth October, 1963,the coastguard told the coxswain that redflares had been seen off Dimlington. Thelife-boat City of Bradford III waslaunched at 7.25 in a moderate southerlybreeze and moderate sea. It was two hoursafter high water. The life-boat found a 36-foot ex-naval pinnace half full of waterwith her anchor down. A rocket line passedby the coastguard was made fast aft.The life-boat passed a line to the pinnace,which had one man on board, and a mem-ber of the life-boat crew went on boardto help him. The pinnace was towed intodeeper water and then towed to Grimsbywhich was reached at 12.5 a.m. the nextmorning. The life-boat returned to herstation at 5.45.

HELP FOR DUTCH

At 12.5 a.m. on 5th November, 1963,the coastguard informed the superintend-ent coxswain that the Dutch motor vesselFokke dejong needed the help of the life-boat to land a sick man. It was arrangedthat the life-boat would launch at fouro'clock and meet the vessel off Spurnlightvessel. There was a moderate south-south-easterly breeze with a correspond-ing sea. The tide was flooding. The life-boat City of Bradford III was launched at3.55 and came up with the Fokke dejonghalf a mile east of Spurn lightvessel. Thesick man, a member of a survey team,was transferred to the life-boat andlanded at Grimsby at 7.45, where anambulance was waiting. The life-boatreturned to her station, arriving at 8.30.

TWO BOYS SAVED

At 2.55 p.m. on I2th November, 1963,the coastguard informed the honorarysecretary that two boys in army uniformappeared to be in difficulties in a boatabout two hundred and fifty yards offCleethorpes. The anchor cable of theirboat had been made fast amidships withthe result that the boat was heeledover and in danger of capsizing. Therewas a near gale from the south-west-by-west with a very rough sea. It was almosthigh water. The life-boat City of BradfordHI was launched at 3.5 and the two boyswere taken off their boat. The boat was

towed to Grimsby where the boys werelanded. The life-boat crew had a meal atthe Seamen's Mission and remained onboard the life-boat during the night,intending to leave Grimsby at 1.30 a.m.Because of the weather conditions thelife-boat remained at Grimsby until theweather moderated. She arrived back ather station at 2.30 p.m. on I3th Nov-ember, 1963.

GUIDING LIGHT GUIDEDNewbiggin, Northumberland. At

5.10 p.m. on I5th October, 1963, thecoxswain told the honorary secretary thata fishing coble had been lying at anchoroff Newbiggin Point for some time. Oninvestigation it was noticed that the coblewas flashing a light. She appeared to bedragging her anchor and drifting slowlytowards the rocks. The life-boat RichardAshley was launched at 5.30 in a gentlesouth-easterly breeze and moderate sea.It was two hours after high water. Thelife-boat found the coble Guiding Light, ofBlyth, with two people on board, half amile east of Newbiggin Point. The twopeople managed to restart the engine,which had failed, as the life-boatapproached. The life-boat escorted thecoble to Blyth Pier and returned to herstation at 6.35.

FIREMEN ON BOARD

North Sunderland, Northumber-land. On the evening of i6th October,1963, the motor mechanic told the hon-orary secretary that he had been told thattwo vessels had been in collision in New-ton Bay and that one of the vessels wasdamaged. The tide was ebbing; there wasa gentle south-westerly breeze and moder-ate sea. The life-boat Grace Darling waslaunched with firemen and pumps onboard at 7.21 p.m. and met the damagedfishing vessel Ocean Gain, of Fraserburgh,which was being escorted by other localfishing vessels outside the harbour. Thepumps were not needed and the life-boatstood by until the tide had flowed suffici-ently to allow the vessel to enter har-bour. The life-boat reached her stationat 1.52 a.m.

The life-boat was also called out on23rd December, 1963.

INJURED SPANIARD

Scarborough, Yorkshire. At n a.m.on 8th October, 1963, a message wasreceived from the coastguard stating thata man was seriously ill aboard the Spanishship Uribitate, of Bilbao, and needed adoctor. The life-boat J. G. Graves ofSheffield was launched at 11.5 with adoctor on board. The ship's position wasgiven as eight miles east-by-north ofScarborough. The tide was half ebb andthere was a moderate breeze from thesouth-west and a smooth sea. The ship'sposition was later amended and the life-boat came up with the Uribitate sevenmiles north-north-east of Scarborough.The doctor was put aboard the ship withtwo members of the life-boat crew.Morphia was administered to the injuredman who was then put aboard the life-boat which returned to Scarborough at1.45 p.m. The man was transferred to anambulance and taken to hospital. Thelife-boat rehoused at 6.45.

ENGINES HAD STOPPED

As the fishing coble Premier was knownto be at sea and the weather conditionswere rapidly deteriorating the life-boatcrew assembled at 7.30 a.m. on lothNovember, 1963. At 9.10 the coastguardinformed the honorary secretary that thefishing coble's engines had broken downand the motor vessel Yewarch, of Glasgow,was standing by her. There was a neargale from the east-south-east with a roughsea. The tide was flooding. The life-boatJ. G. Graves of Sheffield launched at 9.15,came up with the coble Premier and a towrope was made fast. The coble was towedinto harbour arriving at 12.15 P-m- Asthere were still three fishing boats at seathe life-boat was left afloat until theyreturned at three o'clock. The life-boatwas rehoused at four o'clock.

LIFE-BOAT STOOD BY

At 8.30 a.m. on 2nd December, 1963,the coxswain obtained permission fromthe honorary secretary to launch the life-boat to escort the local fishing cobleFlorence, because of deteriorating weather.There was a near gale from thesouth-east with a rough sea and it wastwo hours before low water. The life-boat

J. G. Graves of Sheffield launched at 8.45and found the Florence about five and ahalf miles east-south-east of Scarborough.As it was almost low water the life-boatstood by the Florence until the tide startedflooding and the weather conditions im-proved. The Florence was escorted safelyinto harbour at 1.55 p.m. when the life-boat returned to her station.

SICK MAN IN TRAWLER

At 11.45 a.m. on nth December,1963,the coastguard informed the honorarysecretary that the pilot boat was going toland a sick man from the trawler ArcticCavalier at 1.30 p.m. In view of theweather the life-boat crew assembled andat 1.20 the pilot's office asked the life-boat to land the man as the weatherwas too rough for their boat to lay along-side. There was a near gale from the south-east with a rough sea. It was high water.The life-boat J. G, Graves of Sheffield setout at i .30 and found the trawler at anchor.The sick man was transferred to thelife-boat which then returned to harbourand landed the man. The life-boat arrivedback at her station at 2.35 and was re-housed at four o'clock.

SEVEN AT SEA

Whitby, Yorkshire. At 1.30 p.m. on2oth November, 1963, the coastguardinformed the honorary secretary thatseven fishing cobles were at sea in rapidlydeteriorating weather. There was a stronggale from the north with a rough sea. Thetide was flooding. The life-boat RosaWoodd and Phyllis Lunn, on temporaryduty at the station, was launched at 1.48and stood by until all the fishing boatswere safely in the harbour. The life-boatwas back at her station by 4.40.

AIDING THROMBOSIS PATIENT

At 1.35 a.m. on 26th November, 1963,the coastguard informed the honorary sec-retary that the motor vessel Eminencebound from Sunderland to Goole wishedto land a sick seaman at Whitby. Thelife-boat Rosa Woodd and Phyllis Lunn, ontemporary duty at the station, was launchedat two o'clock with the honorary medicaladviser on board. The life-boat met

the vessel about three miles and a halfnorth-east of Whitby. There was a south-westerly wind of near gale force and arough sea. The doctor was transferred tothe Eminence and the sick man was foundto be suffering from a thrombosis. He wasstrapped to a stretcher and lowered intothe life-boat which then returned to har-bour, arriving at 3.40. The seaman wastaken to hospital by ambulance.

The Sunderland, Co. Durham life-boat was called out on 2oth Octoberand 2Oth November, 1963, and the Tees-mouth, Yorkshire, life-boat was calledout on 20th December, 1963.

SOUTH-EAST ENGLAND

Aldeburgh, Suffolk. At 8.27 a.m. on19th October, 1963, the coastguard toldthe honorary secretary that a cabincruiser had been anchored all night southof the Shipwash lightvessel. At 9.30 thecoastguard told the honorary secretarythat the cabin cruiser had hoisted a whiteflag on a short mast. The life-boat Alfred

and Patience Gottwald was launched at9.40 in a moderate southerly breeze andslight swell. It was three hours after lowwater. She took the cabin cruiser JudithMargaret, with two persons on board, intow to Felixstowe. The life-boat returnedto her station at 3.50 p.m.

PROPELLER TROUBLE

Caister, Norfolk. At 8.50 a.m. oni6th October, 1963, the police told thehonorary secretary that a fishing vesselwas flying distress signals off Caister. Thelife-boat motor mechanic, who was in theboat-house, confirmed that he could seethe vessel north of Caister Elbow throughhis telescope. There was a gentle westerlybreeze with a slight sea. The tide wasflooding. The life-boat Jose Neville waslaunched at nine o'clock and found thefishing vessel Endeavour III, of Harwich,with two people on board, near the Cais-ter Elbow buoy. Her propeller had beenfouled by fishing nets. The life-boat towedthe vessel to Yarmouth harbour and re-turned to her station at 11.50.

CALLS BY CRUISER

Clacton-on-Sea, Essex. At 6.48 p.m.on 27th October, 1963, the coastguardtold the honorary secretary that a flashinglight and calls for help had been seen andheard 400 yards off No. 4 Martello Towerby Jaywick. The life-boat Sir GodfreyBaring was launched at 7.5 in a gentleeasterly breeze and slight sea. The tidewas ebbing. The life-boat proceeded tothe position and found the cabin cruiserGay Bet, of Brightlingsea, with her enginebroken down. She took the cabin cruiserand crew of six in tow to Brightlingsea.The life-boat returned to her station at11.59.

HELP FOR DUTCH VESSEL

At 7.24 p.m. on I7th November, 1963,the coastguard informed the honorary sec-retary that the Dutch motor vessel Heiloo,of Flushing, was aground on the KnollSands. There was a gale from the south-south-west with a rough sea. The life-boatSir Godfrey Baring launched at 7.45 on aflood tide. She stood by until the vesselrefloated on the rising tide, and then es-corted her into the Colne Estuary, wherethe Heiloo anchored. As the vessel hadgrounded amidships her master feared herbottom might have been damaged andasked the life-boat to stand by during thenight. The following morning the Heilooproceeded up the river Colne and the life-boat returned to moorings at Brightling-sea, being unable to re-house in the badweather. The life-boat crew returned byroad to Clacton, arriving at 9.30 a.m. oni8th November, 1963. An attempt waswas made to re-house the life-boat on I9thNovember, 1963, but soon after she leftthe weather deteriorated and the life-boatput back into Brightlingsea harbour. Thelife-boat was eventually taken back to herstation and re-housed on the 20th.

ENGINE DISORDER

Cromer, Norfolk. At 12.30 a.m. on23rd December, 1963, the coastguard in-formed the honorary secretary that Hais-bro' lightvessel had sighted red flaresabout two and a half miles to the south-west. There was a light northerly breezewith a smooth sea. The tide was ebbing.The no. i life-boat Henry Blogg waslaunched at 1.20 and after searching fortwo hours found the fishing vessel FourBrothers with her engine broken down.A tow line was made fast and the fishingvessel was brought safely into Yarmouthharbour, arriving at 7.54. After the crewhad eaten at Yarmouth they returned totheir station, arriving at two o'clock in theafternoon.

OWNER'S GRATITUDE

Dungeness, Kent. At 11.30 a.m. on15th October, 1963, a man informed thehonorary secretary that a small boat hadfired two flares 150 yards off shore be-tween Galloways and Dungeness. Thelife-boat Mabel E. Holland was launchedat 11.42 in a moderate south-westerlybreeze and smooth sea. The tide wasebbing. The life-boat found the boat,Tequila, of Rye, half a mile west of Denge-marsh with her engine broken down. Shewas taken in tow by the life-boat to RyeHarbour which was reached at 1.15 p.m.The life-boat returned to her station at2.30. The owner of the boat made a dona-tion to the funds of the Institution andalso arranged to make an annual donation.

MOTOR BOAT TOW

At 11.15 p.m. on 23rd November, 1963,the coastguard informed the honorarysecretary that a motor boat had brokendown two to three miles north-east ofDungeness. The life-boat Mabel E. Hol-land was launched at 11.35 in a moderateto strong south-south-westerly breeze anda moderate sea. It was one hour anda half after low water. The life-boat foundan ex-life-boat named King John with acrew of two and took her in tow to Doverharbour, arriving at 3.15. a.m. The life-boat then returned to her station by 6.55.

AID FOR ANGLERS

Eastbourne, Sussex. At 1.45 p.m. on2Oth October, 1963, the secretary of thelocal angling association told the honor-ary secretary that two of their membersaged 78 and 60 were in a motor boatbroken down about four miles off shore.There was a fresh south-westerly breezewith a rough sea. It was high water. Thelife-boat Beryl Tollemache was launchedat 2.16 and came up with the casualty atat 2.23. The fishing boat was taken in towand brought back to Eastbourne at 2.42.Each member of the life-boat crew re-ceived a gift from the fishingboat'sowner.

LATE DRIFTING

Great Yarmouth and Gorleston,Norfolk. At 1.4 a.m. on i6th October,1963, the coastguard told the honorarysecretary that he had heard a girl shoutingfor help near the harbour mouth. Therewas a moderate south-south-westerlybreeze with a choppy sea. The tide wasebbing. The life-boat Louise Stephens waslaunched at 1.14 and after a search foundthe small outboard motor boat Margaretdrifting with two young people on board.The two people were taken on board thelife-boat and the Margaret was towedback to harbour at 2.20. It was later learntthat two people, a boy and girl, hadmissed the last bus and ferry from Gorles-ton to Yarmouth and decided to take thesmall boat belonging to the girl's uncle.They had cast off but were unable toto start the engine.

ONE MAN RESCUED

At 2.29 p.m. on igth October, 1963, thecoastguard told the honorary secretarythat the pier lighthouse keeper had seena small boat in difficulties near the har-bour mouth. There was a moderate south-by-east breeze and a choppy sea. The tidewas ebbing. The life-boat Louise Stephenswas launched at 2.42 and came up withthe boat which had one man on board, inbroken water near the pier. The man was

rescued and the boat towed into harbourat 3.10.

LONGSHORE FISHING BOAT

At 5.33 p.m. on 2ist October, 1963, thecoastguard told the honorary secretarythat a longshore fishing boat had brokendown in Yarmouth Roads. Other long-shore boats were calling for assistance asthey could not tow the boat. There was afresh south-westerly breeze with a choppysea. The tide was ebbing. The life-boatLouise Stephens was launched at 5.38 andtowed the boat to safety. She arrivedback at her station at 6.37.

TRAWLER AGROUND

At 2 p.m. on I3th December, 1963, thelife-boat Louise Stephens was launchedat the request of the Colne Fishing Com-pany to lay out an anchor in an attemptto refloat the trawler Loch Lorgan ofLowestoft which was ashore at GreatYarmouth. There was a fresh north-easterly wind with a rough sea, and it waslow water. The anchor which the ownerof the trawler had supplied was laid with120 fathoms of trawl wire. At high waterthe master of the trawler asked the cox-swain to try and tow the vessel off but thetow rope parted and the vessel waswashed ashore again. The life-boatreachedher station at nine o'clock. On I5th Dec-ember, 1963, the life-boat was launchedat 3.30 p.m. at the request of theFire Brigade Chief Officer to stand bythe trawler in case she refloated, as theengine room and after cabin were flooded.The Loch Lorgan was eventually pumpeddry but she did not refloat and the life-boat returned to moorings at ten o'clock.On i6th December, the weather wascalm and there was dense fog. Thelife-boat left her station for the third timeat 6.50 a.m. and using her directionfinding equipment helped to bring a tugclose to the trawler. The trawler's crewand firemen were aboard the Loch Lorganand the life-boat stood-by for a timeuntil the manager of the trawler companysaid that no further help was required.The life-boat returned to her station at10.50.

CAUGHT IN HERRING NETLowestoft, Suffolk. At 10.58 a.m. on

nth October, 1963, the coastguard toldthe honorary secretary that a yacht wasburning a red flare a mile and a half fromLowestoft coastguard lookout. There wasa fresh south-westerly breeze with aslight sea. It was low water. The life-boatFrederick Edward Crick was launched atn.10 and came up with the yacht Leila onthe south end of the Holm Sand. Theyacht, bound from Ramsgate to Yarmouth,had two people on board. A herring nethad fouled her propeller. The coxswainput three of his crew on board the yachtto haul up the anchor and then towed herto Lowestoft, arriving at 12.30 p.m.

LOST PROPELLERMargate, Kent. At 7.7 p.m. on 9th

October, 1963, the pilot office at Margatetold the honorary secretary that a boatwas flashing a light near Foreness Point.The coastguard was informed of the inci-dent, and while they were investigatingtwo members of the life-boat crew tele-phoned to report they had also seen a

flashing light, nearer the shore under thecliffs. There was a light west-north-westerly breeze and a slight sea. The tidewas ebbing. The life-boat North Foreland(Civil Service No. u) was launched at7.30 and found the trawler Inchzvorm,which had lost her propeller, anchorednear the Foreness rocks. A tow line wasmade fast and the Inchworm was towedinto Margate harbour arriving at 8.45.BLOWN OUT TO SEA

At 2.34 p.m. on the 24th November,1963, the coastguard informed the cox-swain that a small boat with a crew ofthree was being blown out to sea. Therewas a near gale from the south-south-west with a rough sea. The tide wasflooding. The life-boat North Foreland(Civil Service No. //) launched at 2.50 andshe found a helicopter hovering over thedinghy Corgi II whose outboard enginehad broken down. The three men inthe dinghy were very cold, wet and ex-hausted as they had been fishing since6 a.m., and when the weather deterior-ated they had tried to row ashore. Themen were taken on board the life-boat

and given rum and blankets to keep themwarm. The boat was towed into theshelter of Minnis Bay about fifty yards offshore and the three men, who were bythis time considerably revived and muchwarmer, returned to their boat and rowedashore. After the small boat had reachedshore safely the life-boat returned to herstation arriving at 4.35.

The life-boat was also called out on 6thOctober, and 16th November, 1963.

NORWEGIAN APPEAL

Newhaven, Sussex. At 9.15 a.m. on9th October, 1963, the honorary secretarywas told that the Norwegian tanker StovePet required assistance to land an injuredman. There was a light northerly breezewith a smooth sea. It was low water. Thelife-boat Kathleen Mary was launched at9.45 and the man, who was sufferingfrom an eye injury, was taken off the tankerand brought into Newhaven harbour at10.15 a.m. He was transferred to a waitingambulance and the life-boat was takento moorings until she was able to be re-housed at 12.30.

SAFELY TO MARGATE

Ramsgate, Kent. At 6.47 p.m. on6th October, 1963, the coastguard toldthe honorary secretary that a small motorboat was flashing the international distresssignal one mile north of Kingsgate. Therewas a gentle north-westerly breeze with amoderate sea. The tide was ebbing. At6.59 the life-boat Elizabeth Elson, ontemporary duty at the station, steamed tothe position and at 7.56 came up with themotor boat Jodon with two men on board.Her engine had broken down. The motorboat was towed into Margate and the life-boat returned to her station at 10.40.

FOUR ESCORTED

At 3.43 p.m. on I7th November,1963, the east pier watchman informedthe honorary secretary that severalsmall boats were out fishing in rapidlydeteriorating weather. There was a neargale from the south-west with a rough sea.

The tide was ebbing and the heavy rainresulted in poor visibility. The life-boatElizabeth Elson, on temporary duty at thestation, left at 3.55 and came up with threemotor boats and a rowing boat one milesouth-south-west of Ramsgate. The boatswere escorted safely into Ramsgate Har-bour and the life-boat returned to herstation at six o'clock.

YACHT'S CREW SAVED

At 12.13 P-m. on the same day the eastpier watchman informed the honorarysecretary that a small yacht was in difficul-ties off Ramsgate. At 12.25 tne life-boatElizabeth Elson, on temporary duty at thestation, put out in a strong south-westerlybreeze and a rough sea. It was almost highwater. The life-boat found the motor boatPatricia with her engine broken downthree-quarters of a mile east of Ramsgate.Two of her crew of three were transferredto the life-boat which then took the Pat-ricia in tow. During the tow the motorboat was continuously shipping water andby one o'clock she was almost capsizing.The motor boat was brought alongsideand the third man was hauled aboard thelife-boat. Shortly afterwards the Patriciasank. The life-boat reached her station at1.15.

GERMAN COASTER AIDED

At 1.34 p.m. on i8th November, 1963,the coastguard informed the honorarysecretary that the German coaster Doro-thea Weber appeared to be in difficultiesoff the North Goodwin lightvessel. Therewas a storm force wind from the south-west with a very rough sea. The tide wasebbing. The life-boat Elizabeth Elson, ontemporary duty at the station, left at 3.15and found the Dorothea Weber six mileseast of the North Goodwin lightvessel.The life-boat escorted the vessel to Mar-gate Roads where she anchored. The life-boat returned to her station at five o'clock.

TOW FOR MOTOR CRUISER

At 12.55 p.m. on igth December, 1963,the east pier watchman informed the hon-orary secretary that a motor cruiser off thethe Quern was signalling for help. Therewas a fresh north-north-westerly breezewith a rough sea. The tide was ebbing.

The life-boat Michael and Lily Davisproceeded at i.i and came up with themotor cruiser Varina whose engine hadbroken down. After some difficulty a towrope was made fast and the Varina wasbrought safely into Ramsgate harbour.The life-boat arrived back at her station at1.35.

The life-boat was also called out on23rd November and 22nd December,1963.

LISTING VESSEL

Selsey, and Shoreham Harbour,Sussex. At 2.20 a.m. on 5th Decem-ber, 1963, the coastguard told the hon-orary secretary at Selsey that Niton radiostation had received a distress call from themotor vessel Sand Runner, of Goole. Shehad a heavy list and required help, herposition being given as seven miles east-north-east of Owers lightvessel. The life-boat Canadian Pacific was launched at2.48 in a moderate north-easterly windand a moderate sea. It was high water.Shortly after 3.21 a message was inter-cepted from the Sand Runner that herposition was seven miles off Worthingand the life-boat, whose position was theneight miles south of Bognor Regis, wasinformed. At 4.16 the life-boat gave herposition as four miles south-east ofLittlehampton, but the Sand Runner hadnot been sighted, although the motorvessel Kenrick had been standing by andhad kept her searchlight on the vessel indistress. The Kenrick fired a flare at 4.50which the life-boat saw at a distance oftwo miles. By 5.19 the Sand Runner, withan increased list and her steering seriouslyrestricted, had reached a position sevento eight miles south of Shoreham, and at5.20 the Shoreham Harbour life-boatDorothy and Philip Constant was launched.She found the motor vessel four milessouth-west of Shoreham Harbour, wentalongside her portside and took off fourof her crew, leaving three men still onboard. The Sand Runner then moved to aposition one mile south of the harbourwhere she anchored, while the Selsey life-boat returned to her station and the Ken-rick resumed her passage. At 9.30 theShoreham Harbour life-boat, which had

been standing by, was joined by the har-bour tug Kingston Buck and an hour laterthe Sand Runner began her run intoharbour under her own steam, still with a20 degree list and with life-boat and tugstanding by. The four members of hercrew had been transferred back to theirship. The Selsey life-boat eventuallyreached her station at 9.50 and the Shore-ham Harbour life-boat at 12.10 p.m.

BOAT WAS OVERDUE

Walmer, Kent. During the afternoonof igth November, 1963, the coastguardand local boatmen received reports that alocal drift net fishing boat was overduewith a strong offshore gale blowing up.The boat was last seen one mile and ahalf north of the Deal coastguard lookout,driving seawards towards the Brake Sands.The launching of the life-boat was delayedbecause the fishing boat was known tohave flares on board and the boat hadnot made any distress signal. The life-boat Charles Dibdin (Civil Service No. 32)was launched at 5.20 p.m. as darknesswas falling, in a rough sea and an ebbingtide, and found the fishing boat Kirby byuse of parachute flares about 400 yards offthe Brake Sands, near B.2 buoy. Herengine had broken down and she wasdragging her anchor. The boat, whichhad a crew of three, was taken in tow toDeal. The life-boat arrived back at herstation at 7.25.

HOLLAND-BOUND RAFT

Walton and Frinton, Essex. At 4.50p.m. on 5th November, 1963, the coast-guard told the honorary secretary that ahome-made raft showing a white lightwas drifting out of Harwich harbour. At5.8 the life-boat Edian Courtauld left hermoorings in a light south-easterly breezeand slight sea. The tide was ebbing. Thecoxswain, using parachute flares, foundthe raft with one man on board half a mile

north-west of the Cork lightvessel. Theraft, with a full rig of square mainsail andtopsail, foresail and mizzen all set, wastrying to sail from Ipswich to Holland.The life-boat took the raft in tow to Har-wich and then returned to her station at11.30.

FOUR SPRAT BOATS

Wells, Norfolk. At 5.20 p.m. on aistNovember, 1963, the coastguard in-formed the honorary secretary that a redflare had been seen north-west of thecoastguard lookout. There was a stronggale from the west-south-west with a veryrough sea. The tide was flooding. Thelife-boat Lucy Lavers, on temporary dutyat the station, launched at 5.30 and cameup with four sprat boats, lying to west ofthe harbour, heavily loaded with fish. Theboats asked the life-boat to escort theminto harbour as they had difficulty inestablishing their position in the drivingspray and foam. Using her searchlight andparachute flares, the life-boat picked outthe channel marker buoy and escortedthe four boats safely into harbour, arrivingat 10.30.

The Dover, Kent, life-boat was calledout on 4th November, 1963.

The Southend-on-Sea, Essex, life-boat was called out three times in Nov-ember, 1963, on the iyth, 25th and 26th.

CHANNEL ISLANDS

St. Peter Port, Guernsey. At 6.40p.m. on 8th October, 1963, the IslandCommissioner of the St. John AmbulanceAssociation asked for the services of thelife-boat to attend a woman on the Islandof Brechan, west of Sark, who had fallendown the cliffs and required medicalattention. He also asked for the launchingto be deferred until 7.30 to enable him toobtain the services of the Brechan doctorand assemble medical equipment. Thelife-boat Euphrosyne Kendal left her moor-

ings at 7.35 in a light north-westerly windand a calm sea. The tide was flooding.The injured woman was taken on boardand brought to St. Peter Port at 10.35where an ambulance was waiting to takeher to hospital.

RED ROCKETS SEEN

At 9.34 p.m. on 27th November, 1963,the St. Peter Port signal station informedthe honorary secretary that red rocketshad been sighted four miles south-east ofSt. Peter Port harbour. There were lightairs and a smooth sea. It was low water.The life-boat Euphrosyne Kendal set outat 9.55 and found the auxiliary cutterTeazer, of Jersey, with her engine brokendown. The Teazer was towed safely intoharbour and the life-boat arrived back ather station at n o'clock.

The life-boat at St. Helier, Jersey,was also called out on I5th November,1963.

SOUTH-WEST ENGLAND

Appledore, Devon. At 12.20 a.m.on 15th December, 1963, the coastguardinformed the honorary secretary that themotor vessel Whitehaven, of Newcastle,had a seriously injured seaman aboard whohad severed a thumb and needed hospitaltreatment. The life-boat Louisa AnneHawker left her moorings at 1.9 in a lightnorth-easterly breeze and a calm sea. Itwas two hours after low water. The life-boat met the Whitehaven near the Fairwaybuoy. The injured seaman was trans-ferred to the life-boat after the life-boat'smotor mechanic, a qualified first-aider,had boarded the motor vessel to examinehim. The seaman was landed and taken tohospital by ambulance. The life-boatreached her moorings at five o'clock.

SEAMAN LANDED

Exmouth, Devon. At 9.15 p.m. onI4th December, 1963, the shore attend-ant informed the honorary secretary thatthe second coxswain had gone fishing attwo o'clock and had not returned to har-bour. The life-boat crew were contactedand the coastguard advised that a smallboat was anchored off the coastguard look-out. There was a gentle east-north-easterly

breeze with a choppy sea. The tide wasebbing. The life-boat Michael Stephensproceeded at 9.50 and reached the motorfishing vessel Nil Desperandum whoseengine had broken down. The fishingvessel was taken in tow to Exmouthharbour and the life-boat arrived back ather station at 10.45.

NEAR PORT ISAAC

Padstow, Cornwall. At 12.55 p.m.on i6th November, 1963, the coastguardinformed the coxswain that three PortIsaac fishing boats were still at sea in rapidlydeteriorating weather. The honorarysecretary was informed and it was agreedto launch the life-boat to escort and standby the fishing boats, which would be un-able to enter the harbour because of thestate of the tide. There was a near galefrom the north-west with a rough sea. Thetide was flooding. The life-boat JosephHiram Chadwick set out at i.io andshortly after leaving harbour the coast-guard informed the coxswain by radiotelephone that two of the boats had reachedharbour. A search was made and thethird fishing boat Dawn was found threemiles north of Port Isaac coastguardstation. The Dawn was escorted safelyinto Port Isaac harbour and the life-boatreturned to her station at 3.20.

The life-boat was also called out on3rd October and iyth November, 1963.

AFTER HEART ATTACK

Penlee, Cornwall. At 8 p.m. on I2thOctober, 1963, the port doctor told thehonorary secretary that he had receiveda message from Niton radio station thatthe United States motor vessel AmericanMerchant had a man on board who hadsuffered a heart attack. He required im-mediate hospital treatment. The doctorhad arranged to meet the ship five milessouth of Penzance. There was a lightsouth-westerly breeze with a slight sea.It was low water. The life-boat SolomonBrowne was launched at 8.15 and sailedto Newlyn to embark a doctor andstretcher. The life-boatleft Newlyn at 8.45and came up with the American Merchantat 9.30. The patient was transferred to the

life-boat, which arrived back at eleveno'clockinNewlyn where an ambulance waswaiting. The patient died before reachinghospital. The life-boat remained on moor-ings at Newlyn during the night and wasrehoused at 10.30 a.m. on the I3th.

CLUNG TO WRECKAGEPenlee, and Sennen Cove, Cornwall.

At 2.58 a.m. on 23rd October, 1963, thecoastguard at St. Just was informed byLand's End radio that a Spanish vesselhad gone aground near Mount's Bay.This message was passed to the honorarysecretary of the Penlee life-boat station at3.9, and the life-boat crew stood byawaiting further information. At 3.30 theSennen Cove honorary secretary wasasked to search off Land's End as thethe position of the casualty was still un-certain. Since there was not enoughwater at the toe of the slipway, the life-boat Susan Ashley could not be launcheduntil 4.10. There was a moderate to strongsouth-westerly wind and a moderate sea.The tide was flooding. The life-boatreached the rocks off Land's End at 4.48and used parachute flares for the search.At this time the coastguard thought thatthe vessel was under the cliffs at Land'sEnd. It was later discovered that the redflares which had been reported at Land'sEnd by cliff searchers were in fact flaresused by the Sennen Cove life-boat, thecolour being confused because of the fog.

The casualty could not be found, andat 6.49 the Penlee life-boat SolomonBrowne was launched. The coxswainsmelt diesel oil off Lamorna Cove and at7 o'clock steamed into a mass of wreckage.The life-boat had picked up a body whenshouts for help were heard about 100yards away. The captain of the casualty,the motor vessel Juan Ferrer, of Valencia,was found clinging to some wreckage. Hewas rescued and wrapped in blankets. Hetold the coxswain that there was a crew of15. As the captain was in a distressed con-dition the coxswain radioed for a doctorand ambulance to be waiting at Newlynand the Penlee life-boat landed him at8.15. In the meantime the Trinity Housevessel Stella, which had also joined thesearch, lowered two ships' boats to carryout a search for any survivors, with the

help of the Sennen Cove life-boat and ahelicopter. At 8.25 the Penlee life-boatleft Newlyn and returned to the searcharea. The helicopter picked up one bodyand the Stella took five bodies, three sur-vivors having reached the shore. By 11.25nothing further had been found and thelife-boats returned to their stations. Sen-nen Cove arrived at 12.28 p.m. and Penleeat 12.30. The Spanish Consul sentletters of appreciation to the honorarysecretaries of both stations. A collectionwas made by the crew of the motor vesselIgnacio Ferrer, a sister ship, and sent tothe Institution's funds.

MAN WAS MISSING

Torbay, South Devon. At 3.8 p.m.on ist October, 1963, the coastguard toldthe honorary secretary that a small sailingdinghy had capsized off LivermeadBeach. A further message was receivedthat two men had been rescued but onewas missing. The life-boat Lloyd's, on

temporary duty at the station, left hermoorings at 5.55 in a gentle north-west-erly breeze and choppy sea. The tide wasflooding. The life-boat searched for themissing man without success until it wastoo dark. She returned to her station at7.30.

ROUGH PASSAGE

St. Ives, Cornwall. At 2.50 p.m. on26th November, 1963, the medical officerfor the port of Penzance and Mount's Bayarea informed the honorary secretary thatthe motor vessel Arthur Albright, expectedin the area at 4.10, had a sick man onboard who required hospital treatment.There was a near gale from the north-north-west with a very rough sea. Thetide was ebbing. The life-boat Edgar,George, Orlando and Eva Child launchedat 3.30 and a stretcher from the St. IvesAmbulance Brigade was taken on board.The life-boat came up with the ArthurAlbright off St. Ives Head, and on theadvice of the coxswain the motor vesselfollowed the life-boat into smootherwater in St. Ives Bay. The life-boat first-

aider went on board the motor vessel tosupervise and check the arrangements formoving the patient, who was safelytransferred to the life-boat in the lee madeby the motor vessel. The patient was latertaken into a waiting ambulance at St.Ives pier and driven to hospital. The life-boat returned to her station at 5.30.

FRENCH TRAWLER AIDED

St. Mary's, Scilly Islands. A doctorrang the coxswain at 10 p.m. on 6th Oct-ober, 1963, stating that he had heard fromthe Penzance Port Medical Authority thata French trawler, Ketty et Michou, wassteaming at full speed for St. Mary's witha seaman suffering from a badly bleedingnose. As the trawler's skipper had neverbeen to the Scilly Islands he had askedfor the life-boat to come out and meet himwith a doctor. The crew assembled at10.15 and the life-boat Guy and ClareHunter left the slipway at 11.30. As thetrawler's skipper had estimated his arrivaloff St. Mary's at about one o'clock thelife-boat with a doctor on board did notleave the town quay until 12.15 a.m. for therendezvous. On the way out they mistak-enly hailed another French trawler butshortly after saw the Ketty et Michouapproaching from the north. It was thefourth hour of the ebb with clear weather,good visibility and a moderate sea. Therewas a strong breeze from the west-north-west. The doctor and the life-boat's secondcoxswain, a Trinity House pilot, were putaboard the trawler and the vessels sailedfor harbour together. Owing to the verylow tide and the fact that two Spanishtrawlers were against the harbour steps itwas difficult to land the man. When thiswas accomplished, the seaman, who hadlost a lot of blood, was taken to hospitalwhere he was detained. The life-boat wasre-housed at nine o'clock the followingmorning. The French trawler put to seaagain and returned eight days later to pickup the seaman.

MAINSAIL WAS TORN

At 8 a.m. on i4th December, 1963, thecoastguard told the honorary secretary

that a man on St. Agnes had seen a smallyacht anchored off the Big Smith Ledgesand appearing to be dragging her anchors.There was a near gale from the eastwith a rough sea. The tide was ebbing.The life-boat Guy and Clare Hunterlaunched at 8.15 and reached the yachtSea Rigs, which had two men on board.The auxiliary engine on the yacht hadfailed and her mainsail was badly torn. Atow rope was made fast and the yacht wasbrought safely into harbour. The life-boat arrived back at her station at 9.10.

The life-boat was also called out on18th and igth December, 1963.

FALL FROM CLIFF

Swanage, Dorset. At 3.13 p.m. onI3th October, 1963, the coastguard toldthe assistant honorary secretary that aman had fallen over the cliff by AnvilPoint. At 3.20 the life-boat R.L.P. waslaunched in a gentle north-westerlybreeze and a slight sea. It was two hoursafter low water. The life-boat proceeded tothe position, where the coxswain anchoredher, and brought the life-boat's stern closein between the rocks. A line was passed totwo men who had climbed down thecliff to the body. The body was embarkedand taken to the slipway where the police,a doctor and an ambulance were waiting.The life-boat, after leaving the body inpolice custody, returned to her station at4.52.

ADVENTURE AT SEA

Yarmouth, Isle of Wight. At 3.18p.m. on zyth November, 1963, the coast-guard informed the honorary secretarythat a boat had been called out from Mude-ford under the inshore rescue scheme tothe help of another boat firing red flaresoff Highcliffe. Later the honorary secre-tary was told that the boat from Mudefordhad taken the fishing boat Adventure witha crew of two in tow and was having diffi-culty in crossing the bar at Chichesterharbour because of the state ofthe tide andheavy seas. The life-boat The Earl andCountess Howe left her moorings at 3.38 in

a southerly gale and reached the twoboats off Hordel Point. The crew of thefishing boat had managed to restart theirengine and were beginning to make slowprogress towards Keyhaven. The life-boat escorted the Adventure to Keyhavenand returned to her station at 5.15.

At 6 a.m. on20th December, 1963, the coastguard in-formed the Porthdinllaen honorary secre-tary thata French fishingvesselwas leakingbadly thirty miles west of Bardsey Island.There was a moderate north-easterly breezewith a slight sea. The tide was ebbing.The Porthdinllaen life-boat Charles HenryAshley launched at 6.30, but about onehour later the coxswain received a radio-telephone message that the trawlerFrancoise Delille had sunk and that hercrew had been rescued by the U.S.motor vessel, American Builder, whichwas proceeding to Holyhead to land thesurvivors. The Porthdinllaen life-boatreturned to her station at nine o'clock.The life-boat J.J.K.S.W. on temporaryduty at Holyhead was launched at 8.40 andwent to a position six miles south-west-by-west of South Stack to meet the Ameri-can Builder. The eight survivors were

transferred to the life-boat and landed atHolyhead, where the honorary medicaladvisor was in attendance, because one ofthe survivors was suffering from shock.The life-boat arrived back at her station at11.30.

On i8th November, 1963, the Mumbleslife-boat, William Gammon-Manchesterand District XXX, rescued ten men fromthe motor vessel Kilo, of Amsterdam. Afull account of this service, for whichspecial awards were made to the coxswainand crew of the life-boat, appears on page7-

ON THE ROCKSPorthdinllaen, Caernarvonshire.

At 5.30 a.m. on 23rd October, 1963, thecoastguard told the honorary secretarythat the m.v. St. Trillo was aground sixmiles south-west of Porthdinllaen. Therewas a strong south-westerly breeze with amoderate sea. It was low water. The life-boat Charles Henry Ashley was launched at5.55 and found the vessel aground with herbows on the rocks. Her master asked thelife-boat to stand by while he refloated thevessel on the flooding tide as she washoled forward. The St. Trillo refloated at7.45 and the life-boat escorted her toCaernarvon Bar in case the vessel'spumps could not cope. At 9.15 the masterof the St. Trillo thanked the life-boatcrew and said he did not require anyfurther help. The life-boat returned toher station arriving at eleven o'clock.

LOST THEIR DINGHY

St. David's, Pembrokeshire. At 6.15p.m. on i8th October, I963,thecoastguardtold the acting honorary secretary thattwo fires and a flashing light had beenseen on Ramsey Island. At 6.19 the life-boat Joseph Soar (Civil Service No. 34),with a doctor and policeman on boardwas launched in a gentle to moderatesouth-south-westerly breeze and slightsea. The tide was flooding. ing Ramsey Island a small light was seento the north of the harbour. On investiga-tion the life-boat found two men balingout a motor boat whose engine would notstart. A fibre glass dinghy used by thetwo men to take them from the harbour tothe motor boat had been lost. The life-boat searched for the lost dinghy for awhile but could find no trace of it. Shereturned to her station with the two menat 7.45.

TOW FOR TRAWLER

Tenby, Pembrokeshire. At 1.40 p.m.on I4th October, 1963, the honorary sec-retary was told by the crew of a smallyacht that a trawler had broken downabout five miles east of Tenby. The life-boat Henry Comber Brown was launchedat 1.50 in a light north-north-westerlybreeze and a slight sea. The tide was ebb-ing. The life-boat found the trawlerMorning Star, of Tenby, with a crew ofthree, and took her in tow to Tenbywhere they arrived at 2.45.

NORTH-WEST ENGLANDFleetwood, Lancashire. At i a.m. on

3ist October, 1963, the coastguard toldthe honorary secretary that the m.v. PeterLeigh had broken down two and a halfmiles east of Morecambe Bay lightvessel.The life-boat City of Bradford II, ontemporary duty at the station, was launchedat 1.40 in a moderate east-south-easterlybreeze and smooth sea.The tide was ebbing.The m.v. Pointsman had already taken thePeter Leigh in tow and the life-boat wasasked to escort the two vessels to the Barlightvessel; this being done the life-boatreturned to her station which she reachedat eight o'clock.

YACHT AGAINST TIDE

Hoylake, Cheshire. At 3 p.m. on igthOctober, 1963, the yacht Spindrift II wasseen to be making little headway againsta strong tide. As it was unlikely that theyacht would reach a safe anchorage beforedarkness fell, after which it would havebeen hazardous to sail in shoal water witha quickly ebbing tide, it was decided tolaunch the life-boat. There was a neargale from the south-east with a choppysea. Thelife-boatOW&zw/Fwas launchedat 4.5. The yacht, with four people onboard, had by this time set well reefed sailsand at first declined help from the life-boat. It was soon evident that the yachtcould make little progress in the prevailingconditions, and at the request of herskipper she was towed into Hilbre poolby the life-boat. The life-boat returned toher station at 5.40.

AID FOR PILOT CUTTERLytham-St. Anne's, Lancashire. The

Preston Harbour Master telephoned thehonorary secretary at 11.35 p.m. on

4th October, 1963, stating that the pilotcutter St. Margaret had broken down andwas drifting with her lights out half a milesouth of the twelveandahalfmilePerch. At11.55 the life-boat Sarah Townsend Porrittleft her moorings. It was half an hour tohigh water; the weather was overcast witha west-south-westerly wind gusting tonear gale force. The life-boat found the2O-ton cutter, with a crew of two and threepilots on board, anchored at the givenposition. The vessel was taken in towback to the navigation barge, and the life-boat returned to her moorings at 1.45 a.m.

STANDING BY

New Brighton, Cheshire. At 9.50a.m. on i8th October, 1963, the coast-guard told the honorary secretary that afishing vessel was in distress south of C 2buoy. There was a moderate north-west-erly breeze with a choppy sea. The tidewas flooding. The life-boat White Star,on temporary duty at the station, left hermoorings at 10.10 and came up with afishing vessel being towed by anotherfishing vessel. The life-boat stood byuntil both boats were safely in Formbypool. She returned to her station at 12.20p.m.ESCORT FOR TANKER

At 3.45 a.m. on I2th November, 1963,the coastguard told the honorary secretarythat a red rocket and searchlight had beenseen from a vessel in the Crosby channel.At four o'clock the life-boat White Star,on temporary duty at the station, left hermoorings in a near south-easterly gale andrough sea. The tide was flooding. Thevessel, the tanker Helen, of Stavanger,freed herself from the revetment wallwhere she had grounded and was escortedby the life-boat to Waterloo Dock entrance.The life-boat returned to her station at5-45-CLINGING TO DINGHY

At 12.40 p.m. on 2oth November, 1963,the Wallasey police told the honorarysecretary that two men had been seenclinging to a capsized dinghy a milenorth of the Leasowe lighthouse. At 12.50the life-boat White Star, on temporaryduty at the station, left her moorings withher boarding boat in a moderate south-

SCOTLAND

Aberdeen. At 6.8 p.m. on 24thNovember, 1963, the honorary secretarywas informed that the engine room of thesteam trawler Aston Villa of Grimsby was

flooding two miles north-north-east ofAberdeen. This report was received directfrom the trawler by the Aberdeen har-bour radio and contact was maintained byradio. There was a moderate south-west-erly breeze with a corresponding sea.It was nearly high water. As the reportsstated the position was serious the life-boat Ramsay-Dyce launched at 6.20 andescorted the trawler into Aberdeen har-bour, arriving at 6.38. The life-boat re-turned to her station at 6.58.

AT MUCKLE ROE

Aith, Shetlands. At 12.30 p.m. on4th December, 1963, the coastguard in-formed the honorary secretary that afishing boat had been reported agroundon the rocks at Muckle Roe, opposite theisle of Papa Little. The life-boat John andFrances Macfarlane set out at 12.40 in alight north-easterly breeze and a slightsea. It was one hour after high water. Thelife-boat found the motor fishing vesselProlific ashore. After standing by forsome time the fishing vessel's skipper

decided that she was in too bad a conditionto be towed off. The four crew membersscrambled ashore and the life-boat re-turned to her station, arriving at 2.10.DOCTOR'S CALL

Barra Island, Outer Hebrides. At12.20 a.m. on iyth December, 1963, thelocal doctor informed the honorarysecretary that a young boy needed to betaken to hospital at South Uist. Therewere light north-easterly airs with achoppy sea. The tide was ebbing. At12.50 the young boy was embarked andthe life-boat R.A. Colby Cubbin No. 3 pro-ceeded to South Uist where the boywas taken to hospital. The life-boatarrived back at her station at 7.30.

The life-boat was also called out on 8thand I4th November and 29th December,1963.

FLEET'S SAFE RETURNFraserburgh, Aberdeensbire. At

10 a.m. on igth December, 1963, it wasdecided to launch the life-boat to standby at the harbour entrance when thefishing fleet returned to harbour. Therewas a gale from the north-north-east witha heavy sea running across the harbourentrance. The life-boat The Duchess of Kentlaunched at 10.10 and escorted all theboats safely into harbour. The life-boatarrived back at her station at 11.25.

BY BREECHES BUOY

Islay, Inner Hebrides. At 3.17 a.m.on 8th December, 1963, the coast-guard told the honorary secretary that thetrawler Margaret Wicks,of Fleetwood, wasashore on the Mull of Oa. There was afresh south-easterly breeze with a choppysea. The tide was ebbing. The life-boatThe Rankin, on temporary duty at thestation, set out at 3.50. At 5.26 the Mar-garet Wicks reported that the Port Ellenand Mull of Oa life-savingapparatus teamshad established contact and that H.M.S.Hampshire was standing by. The life-boat kept in touch with the trawler andthe Hampshire by radio telephony and bythis means learned that all the crew of thetrawler had been rescued by breechesbuoy. At the request of the master of theMargaret Wicks the life-boat put himand some crew members on board the

trawler to assess the damage and thepossibility of refloating at high water.The trawler was unable to refloat andafter landing the party at Port Ellen thelife-boat returned to her station at fouro'clock.

SICK MAN ABOARD

Lerwick, Shetlands. Shortly aftermidnight on the 3Oth November, 1963,the coastguard informed the assistanthonorary secretary that the motor fishingvessel Splendour, seventy-five miles east-by-north of Lerwick, had a sick man onboard who needed medical treatment. Atthree o'clock a doctor spoke with, theSplendour by radio-telephone and at fiveo'clock the life-boat was asked to launch,with a doctor on board, to meet the vesselwhich was making for Lerwick. Therewas a gentle southerly breeze with achoppy sea. The tide was flooding. Thelife-boat Claude Cecil Staniforth launchedat 5.25 with the life-boat honorary medicaladviser on board and contacted the fishingvessel at 6.48. The doctor was transferredto the Splendour which followed the life-boat to Lerwick harbour. The life-boatarrived back at her station at 9.9.

COXSWAIN'S SONS RESCUED

Longhope, and Stromness, Ork-neys, and Wick, and Thurso, Caith-ness-shire. At 5.30 p.m. on I7thDecember, 1963, the coastguard told theLonghope honorary secretary that redflares had been seen in the PentlandFirth, bearing west-south-west from thecoastguard station. After making enquir-ies it was established that the fishing ves-sel Delightful with two of the Longhopecoxswain's sons on board had not yetreturned from a fishing trip. There wasa moderate north-north-easterly breezewith a smooth sea. It was low water. Thelife-boat T.G.B. launched at 5.50 andbegan to search the area. At 6.55 theStromness life-boat Archibald and Alex-ander M. Paterson launched to help theLonghope life-boat. A Shackleton air-craft joined in the search at nine o'clockbut was recalled about an hour later as herradar set failed. The weather had by thistime deteriorated and there was a neargale from the north-north-east with a

rough sea. Visibility was reduced, owingto frequent snow showers. At 4.30 a.m.the trawler Glen Struan reported that shehad sighted the casualty one mile north ofStroma lighthouse, but as a result of theweather had lost sight of her again. Atsix o'clock on the following morning theWick life-boat City of Edinburgh launchedto help in the search and to relieve theStromness life-boat. At seven o'clock theThurso life-boat Pentland (Civil ServiceNo. 31) launched and at 8.30 found thecasualty in Brough Bay. The Thurso life-boat towed the Delightful to Longhope,escorted by the Longhope and Stromnesslife-boats. The Wick life-boat arrivedback at her station at 11.30. Theother three life-boats reached Longhopeat 11.30 and the Thurso and Strom-ness life-boats arrived back at theirstations at 1.30 and 1.15 p.m. respectively.

CREW WERE SAFEMallaig, Inverness-shire. At 4.10

a.m. on loth November, 1963, the coast-guard told the honorary secretary that them.f.v. Famous was ashore on StationPoint. There was a light north-easterlybreeze with a slight sea, and the tidewas ebbing. The life-boat EMM. GordonGubbin set out at 4.45 and reachedthe vessel at five o'clock. The crewwere found to be quite safe and it wasdecided to return to harbour and wait forthe flood tide. The life-boat put outagain at 8.40 and returned to the vesseland a tow rope was made fast. As thetide flooded the Famous was towed clearof the rocks and escorted into harbour.The life-boat arrived back at her stationat 12.15 P-m-

1963, the coastguard informed the hon-orary secretary that a message had beenreceived from the motor fishing vesselBorder King that her engine had brokendown on the west side of Strathy Point.The vessel had her anchor down but shewas close to the shore and needed a tow.The life-boat Pentland {Civil ServiceNo. 31) was launched at 12.15 a-m- m a

fresh north-westerly breeze and a roughsea. It was three hours after low water.The life-boat took the Border King with acrew of seven in tow to Scrabster harbour.The life-boat returned to her station,arriving at 10.20.

RED FLARES FIRED

At 3.20 p.m. on ist December, 1963,the coastguard informed the honorarysecretary that the motor fishing vesselVillage Maid was firing red flares betweenWhiten Head and Locherribol. Therewas a fresh southerly breeze with a roughsea. The tide was ebbing. The life-boatPentland (Civil Service No. 31) launchedat 3.40 but the Village Maid sank beforethe life-boat arrived and her crew of threewere rescued by the trawler MountEverest. The three survivors were trans-ferred to the life-boat and landed atScrabster. The life-boat arrived back ather station at 9.30.

TOW ROPE PARTED

Troon, Ayrshire. At 10.15 a-m- on

ist October, 1963, a pilot told the honor-ary secretary that a motor boat was burn-ing flares about two miles north-west ofTroon harbour. The life-boat James andBarbara Aitken left her moorings at 10.40in a gentle west-north-westerly breezeand moderate sea. It was two hours beforehigh water. The life-boat found themotor boat Corsair with a crew of threewith her engine broken down. The life-boat took the Corsair in tow and reachedTroon harbour at 11.15. It was later

learnt that when the Corsair's engine hadbroken down she had been taken in towby the motor boat Lady Clare. But thetew rope had parted and fouled the LadyClare's propeller and both boats haddrifted apart at dusk the previous day.

Both boats had been adrift throughoutthe night. The Lady Clare was found byan I.C.I, vessel and towed into Ardrossanharbour.

STRANDED SERVICEMEN

At 8.30 p.m. on 4th November, 1963,the coxswain saw a signalling lamp beingused on Lady Isle, and informed the hon-orary secretary. There was a fresh north-easterly breeze with a moderate sea andthe tide was flooding. The life-boat Jamesand Barbara Aitken left at ten o'clock andfound a party of three United Statesservicemen stranded on Lady Isle. Theirmotor boat, which is used by the UnitedStates Air Force in connection withparachute training and skin diving, hadbroken down and been washed on to theisland. The three men were broughtback to the mainland and the life-boatreturned to her station, arriving at 12.15a.m. on 5th November, 1963.

The life-boat was also called out onloth and I2th November, 1963.

PATIENT ON BOARD .TANKER

Wick, Caithness-shire. At 6.30 p.m.on 2Oth December, 1963, the local medi-cal officer told the honorary secretary thatthe tanker Himan had a crew member onboard suffering from appendicitis. Thelocal pilot boat was unable to land theman on account of the weather. Therewas a fresh north-easterly breeze with arough sea. The tide was flooding. The life-boat City of Edinburgh set out at 7.45 andthe man was transferred from the tankerand safely landed at Wick. The life-boatarrived back at her station at 9.30.

IRELANDBaltimore, Co. Cork. At 8.30 a.m. on

6th October, 1963, Valentia Radio toldthe honorary secretary that one of the

crew of the m.v. Oranmore had beenseriously injured following a collision be-tween the m.v. Oranmore and the m.v.Mulcair. At nine o'clock the life-boatSarah Tilson was launched in a slightsouth-westerly breeze and smooth sea.The tide was ebbing. Visibility was verybad due to fog. The life-boat sailed to thevessel which was found four miles south-east of Fastnet. The injured man couldnot be taken off the vessel as he was stilltrapped in the wreckage. The life-boatreturned to her station and embarked adoctor, priest, nurse and a man with anoxy-acetelyne torch. The injured manwas then cut free and taken on board thelife-boat and landed at Baltimore. Hedied shortly after the life-boat arrived atBaltimore Pier. The life-boat returned toher station at one o'clock.

DUTCHMEN IN DINGHY

Ballycotton, Co. Cork. At 10.45p.m. on 6th October, 1963, five Dutchfishermen left Ballycotton harbour ina rubber dinghy to return to their shipwhich was anchored with twelve otherDutch trawlers in Ballycotton Bay. Thedinghy was blown off course and finallywent ashore on the north-east point ofBallycotton lighthouse. The four menmanaged to scramble up the cliff into thelighthouse. At six minutes past twelve onthe morning of the yth the life-boat EthelMary went to the lighthouse in a moder-ate north-westerly gale and a choppy sea,where it was learned that one of the fivemen was missing and one of the survivorswas very weak. The life-boat searched forthe missing man without success. Thelife-boat then returned to Ballycottonwhere a doctor and nurse were embarkedand taken to the lighthouse to attend thefour survivors. The life-boat searchedagain for the missing man without success.She then took the four survivors back totheir ship, where it was learnt that themissing man had swum back to his ship.The life-boat returned to her stationwhere the coxswain saw twenty-fourother Dutch fishermen trying to get backto their sh;ps. The coxswain decided totake them in the life-boat which finallyreturned to her station at 4.30 p.m.

TELEPHONE ENQUIRIES

Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. At7.45 p.m. on i3th October, 1963, thegardai told the honorary secretary that redflares had been seen off Bray Head. Asthe information was not definite the hon-orary secretary rang various hotels andpolice barracks along the coast to ascertainwhether a boat had been reported missing.At 8.45 one of the members of thelocal life-boat committee confirmed thatthe motor boat Pacheco was missing be-tween Greystones and Bray Head. Therewas a gentle south-westerly breeze with achoppy sea. The life-boat Dunleary IIwas launched at nine o'clock on an ebbingtide. When abeam of Bray Head the cox-swain saw a flashing light and came upwith the converted ship's life-boat Mariawith three people on board. She had putout to search for the Pacheco but herengine had broken down. The life-boattook the Maria in tow and continued tosearch for the Pacheco with the aid ofparachute flares. The Pacheco, with acrew of two, was eventually found andboth boats were towed back to DunLaoghaire, arriving at 12.35 a.m.

The life-boat was also called out on18th October, and 8th and 9th November,1963.

TAKEN TO DOCKS

Galway Bay. Shortly before 9 p.m. on4th October, 1963, the honorary secre-tary was told that a man in Kilronan hadbeen seriously injured in a fall and re-quired immediate hospital treatment.Owing to the state of the tide no otherboat could land the patient at Rossaveeland the honorary secretary agreed to theuse of the life-boat. There was a strongwesterly breeze with a rough sea. Thetide was ebbing. The life-boat MabelMarion Thompson left her moorings at9.30 and carried the injured man toGalway Docks where he was transferredto an ambulance and taken to hospital.The life-boat returned to her station,arriving at 5 a.m. on the 5th. It waslater learnt that the.man did not recoverconsciousness and died that night.

APPENDICITIS PATIENT

doctor told the honorary secretary that hehad a patient with appendicitis who re-quired hospital attention. The life-boatMabel Marion Thompson left her mooringsat 2.30 in a moderate southerly breeze andsmooth sea. It was two hours before highwater. The patient was embarked andtaken to Rossaveel. The life-boat returnedto her station at six o'clock.

ISLAND CALL

At 2.15 p.m. on 3rd November, 1963,the local doctor informed the honorarysecretary that a sick patient on InishmaanIsland needed hospital treatment. Therewas a fresh easterly breeze with a moder-ate sea. The tide was ebbing. The life-boat Mabel Marion Thompson set out at3 p.m. and embarked the patient atInishmaan Island. The patient was takento Rossaveel on the mainland and trans-ferred to a waiting ambulance. The life-boat returned to her station, arriving atseven o'clock.

DOCTOR'S MISSION

At i.20 p.m. on 8th November,1963, the local medical officer informed

the honorary secretary that a patient wasin need of medical attention on InishereIsland, and asked for the use of the life-boat in case the patient had to be con-veyed to hospital. There was a strongsouth-westerly breeze with a moderatesea. The tide was ebbing. The life-boatMabel Marion Thompson embarked thedoctor at Kilronan and landed him onInishere Island. As it was not necessaryto take the patient to hospital the life-boat returned to her station at 6.15.

TAKEN TO HOSPITAL

At 2.30 p.m. on 2nd December, 1963,the local doctor told the honorary secre-tary that a sick patient required to be takento the mainland for hospital treatment.The honorary secretary agreed to use thelife-boat since the weather was bad andno other boat was available. There was agale from the south-east with a rough sea.The patient and a nurse were embarkedand the life-boat Mabel Marion Thompsonset out at 3.30 on a flooding tide. Thepatient was landed at Rossaveel on themainland and carried to hospital by a

waiting ambulance. The life-boat re-turned to her station at 7.15.

TWO PATIENTS LANDED

At i p.m. on nth December, 1963, thelocal nurse informed the honorary sec-retary that two patients needed to betaken to the mainland for hospital treat-ment. There was a gale force wind fromthe south-west with a rough sea. It wasone hour before high water. The patientswere embarked and the life-boat MabelMarion Thompson set out. The two pat-ients were landed at Rossaveel and thelife-boat returned to her station at 4.35.

MATERNITY NEEDS

At 11 p.m. on 28th December, 1963, thelocal doctor informed the honorary sec-retary that a maternity patient needed tobe taken to hospital on the mainland.There was a strong south-easterly breezewith a rough sea. The tide was flooding.The patient and a nurse were embarkedand the life-boat Mabel Marion Thompsonleft at 11.30. The patient was landed atRossaveel and the life-boat returned toher station at 3.30 a.m.

TAKEN BY LIFE-BOAT

At 10.30 a.m. on 29th December, 1963,the local doctor requested the use of thelife-boat to attend patients on Inishmaanand Inishere Islands. As the weather wasbad and as no other boat was available thehonorary secretary readily agreed. Therewas a gale force wind from the west witha rough sea. The life-boat Mabel MarionThompson left at eleven o'clock with thedoctor on board, and the doctor visitedboth islands, landing by a small boat oneach occasion. The life-boat arrived backat her station at 3.45 p.m.

The life-boat was also called out on23rd December, 1963.

MOTHER WAS ILL

Kilmore, Co. Wexford. At 5 p.m. on4th November, 1963, the Irish LightsOffice asked if the life-boat would bringa seaman from the Coningbeg light-vessel to the shore where his mother wasdangerously ill. At 5.15 the life-boat AnnIsabella Pyemont was launched in a fresh

south-easterly breeze and correspondingsea. The tide was flooding. The life-boatembarked the seaman and returned toher station, arriving at nine o'clock.

RADIO MESSAGE

Valentia, Co. Kerry. At 1.35 a.m. on2 ist December, 1963, the honorary sec-retary received a message via ValentiaRadio that the motor vessel Wellpark, ofGlasgow, had a crewman on board suffer-ing from acute appendicitis. The vesselwas due at the Skelligs at five o'clock andasked the life-boat to pilot her into DingleBay and land the sick man. There was amoderate easterly breeze with a slight sea.The tide was ebbing. The life-boat Row-land Watts put out at 2.10 and em-barked a doctor and nurse at ValentiaQuay. The life-boat arrived off the Skel-ligs at 3.20 and reached the Wellpark fivemiles west of the Skelligs at 5.15. The sickman was transferred to the life-boat whichwent to Reenard, where the man waslanded and taken to hospital by a waitingambulance. The life-boat arrived back ather station at 8.30. It was learnt laterthat the sick man was a member of theBarra Island life-boat crew before joiningthe Wellpark.

The life-boat was also called out on 9thDecember, 1963.

SEEN FROM TRAIN

Wicklow. At 12.45 a-m- on 25tn

October, 1963, a driver of a train boundfrom Dublin to Wexford saw flares and aflashing light at sea a few miles north ofWicklow. He made an unscheduled stop,cut the engine and made his way down tothe sea, where he again saw a red flare andheard shouts for help. He returned to histrain, continued to Wicklow, where hemade a second stop, and informed thelife-boat coxswain. There was a gentlewesterly breeze with a smooth sea. Thetide was flooding. The life-boat J. W.Archer was launched at 1.5, and after ashort search found the motor yachtChristine, of Wicklow, fast on a submergedwreck three miles north of Wicklow har-bour. A tow rope was made fast and theyacht was pulled off the wreck, when it

was found she had also fouled her propel-ler. The yacht was towed into Wicklow,and the life-boat returned to her station,arriving at 2.30.

FRENCH RESCUED

Youghal, Co. Cork. On 2ythOctober, 1963, the Youghal life-boat,Herbert John, rescued four men from theFrench trawler Fee des Ondes. A fullaccount of this service, for which special

awards were made to the coxswain andcrew, appears on page 6.

DRIFTERSplash!Splash!I stood on the pier, watching the sea crashing

up against the wall below. I looked up aboveme to see a grey, overcast sky. All around wasdeserted. The wind blew stronger everyminute. Big drops of rain began to fall. Iwalked along the pier towards the life-boathouse to shelter, hoping that the storm woulddie down so that I could run home and not gettoo wet. I stood by the wall of the life-boatshed and looked up. On the wall, in big capitalswas written: R.N.L.I. "I wonder what thatstands for ? Royal - um - nations - no - um-national - life-boats - ur - oh dear - institution— that's it!" I was thinking how clever I was,when the shed doors flew open and down theslipway came the life-boat. It went dashingdown into the sea, sending water splashingbehind it. I ran to the railings to see it, andthen raced along the pier, following it until Icame to the point where the harbour meets thesea. Then I leaned on the wet stone wall,waiting for the moment when the boat left thecalm waters of the harbour and met its firstwave in the open sea. My heart thumped as athundering wall of water headed for the littleboat.

Crash!Sheets of water flew up over the bows into

the rigging, then down into the cockpit,sluicing round the feet of the oilskinnedfigures. For a fearful moment I thought thelife-boat would not survive the raging seas,but there it was sliding down into the troughbeyond it.

The rain fell in torrents and I knew thatit would not stop, so I ran home. Arrivingthere I shouted, "Did you see the life-boat?I did. / was standing right by its shed!" Ilooked out of the windows overlooking the seaand I watched the white-capped waves crash-ing up to the wall, then bursting back again.

Later I learned from one of the crew exactlywhat had happened. A trawler had radioed thelife-boat station because its engines had failedand it was drifting with the wind on to somedangerous rocks. Even the powerful dieselengines of the Watson life-boat found it hardto carry the craft through the leaping seas andthe howling wind to the distressed victim andit was half an hour before the coxswain sawthe fiery tail of a rocket to the port bow. Hechanged course and headed for the trawler and

within minutes it was in sight, wallowing help-lessly along, broadside on to the wind. Everytime it rose to the crest of the waves it rolleddangerously over, dipping the rail round theside in the water, soaking the deck and sweep-ing things off it. The life-boat came round onthe windward side of her to avoid being hit bythe drifting boat. The coxswain picked up theloud-hailer and shouted to the crew of thetrawler. They answered by waving.

Through the driving spray the coxswaincould now see the cliffs quite easily, but hedecided to manoeuvre the boat near enough tobe sure of getting a lifeline across. It was ananxious moment for the crew as they watchedthe lifeline snake across the bows of the trawler,but it reached its destination safely. Thepeople on the trawler eagerly pulled at it untilthey came to the thicker rope tied on to theend. They tied it on the mast and pulled the

breeches buoy on board. One by one they slidacross the cruel sea to the safety of the life-boat.One of the men held his arm limply besidehim. He had been smashed up against a rail bya big wave. Another was bleeding from a cuton his face. All were wet, tired, shocked,bruised and cold. They were taken below andattended to.

Time was running out because the boat wasdrifting nearer and nearer to the rocks. One ofthe deck-hands pulled the breeches buoy onboard and threw the lifeline into the water,then they started back for home with theengines going full blast. Soon the harbourlighthouse was in sight and before long thelife-boat was back in its shed and the fisher-men were taken to hospital.

Three months later, at a local ceremony, thecoxswain was awarded the silver medal forhis bravery — and I saw that too!

OBITUARYMR. HAROLD COWIE, s.s.c., a

former member of the Committee ofManagement, died on the lothDecember, 1963.

Mr. Cowie served on the Committeeof Management from 1949 until hisresignation a few months before hedied. He was appointed vice-chairmanof the Scottish Executive Committeeformed in 1945 and was elected chair-man in 1958.

He was a partner in the firm ofMessrs. Fyfe, Ireland, the Institu-tion's solicitors in Scotland.

MR. E. SELBY DAVIDSON, whodied on the 8th August, 1963, washonorary secretary of the Tynemouthlife-boat station for 24 years. He wasappointed in September, 1939, andfrom May, 1962, served as joint honor-ary secretary with Captain D. S.Atkinson.

He was awarded the bronze medalfor gallantry for a service to the Nor-wegian motor ship Oslo Fjord on the8th December, 1940, in which theTynemouth life-boat rescued 23 mem-bers of the Norwegian crew. Onemonth later he became temporarysecond coxswain of the Tynemouthlife-boat. In January, 1952, he wasawarded binoculars for his servicesto the Institution and in January,1961, he was awarded the gold badge.

MR. W. H. RICHARDS, previouslysecond coxswain at the former Lyn-

mouth life-boat station, died in aLondon hospital on the ist December,1963, at the age of 82.

He was the last survivor of the crewwhich, in January 1899, hauled thelife-boat Louisa over Countisbury Hill- with its gradient of one in four and ahalf - and launched from Porlock tohelp a ship in distress. The crew, 28helpers and a team of horses, tookloj hours to reach Porlock. Parts ofthe road had to be widened withpick-axes and shovels and gate postsand a cottage wall had to be pulleddown to make way for the life-boat.

MRS. AMY LEA WARREN PEARL, anhonorary life-governor of the Institu-tion, died on ist February, 1964,at the age of 83. She was a member ofthe Chelsea branch committee from1936, became vice-chairman in 1951,and subscribed generously to theInstitution through the Chelsea branch.She was a former member of theCentral London Women's Committee.

As a very active member of theAmerican colony in London shesupported many charitable organiza-tions. With members of her familyshe was aboard the Lusitania when theliner was torpedoed and two of herchildren were lost. Two of her daugh-ters and two of her daughters-in-lawwere at one time members of eitherthe Central London or Chelseabranches.

DISTRICT INSPECTOR IN ROAD ACCIDENTLieutenant E. D. STOGDON, R.N.V.R., hospital and will be off duty for several

District Inspector (South-East), who weeks. He was deeply gratified by thewas involved in a road accident on the letters of sympathy received from his22nd December, 1963, was taken to friends in the life-boat service.

PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION

THE photographic competition announ-ced in the December, 1962, LIFE-BOAThas not been as successful as in previousyears and it has been decided to extendthe period to the 3151 October, 1964.

The competition is open to membersof life-boat crews, branch members andofficials and members of the Institu-tion's staff, and the following prizes areoffered:

£10 for the best 35-mm. colourtransparency.

£10 for the best black and whitephotograph.

The winning photographs will be-come the Institution's property. Othertransparencies and photographs will bereturned, if requested, and acknowledg-ment will be made if they are used inthe Institution's publications.
