CEO’s Report

Dear Members,

Despite Sydney seeing some of its coldest days in the last century over the past couple of months, it’s been pleasing to see so many members making use of our warm and comfortable facilities.

Our new Tiny Tots Tuesday has proven to be very successful with lots of new faces joining us every Tuesday morning with their youngsters in tow. In August and

September we’ll be continuing with the new program with your favourite performers returning and some new options joining the schedule. And to keep the kids occupied in the school holidays we’ve got everyone’s favourite dinosaur, Dorothy the Dinosaur, performing at Wenty.

It seems to be raining legends of Australian rock music at Wenty these days. hot off the heels of John Paul Young in July we’ve got The Radiators in August and Daryl Braithwaite in September.

In September you could win the ultimate in television technology just in time for the NRL Grand Final with not just one but FOUR of the latest LeD 3D televisions up for grabs in our latest major promotion. Along with the TV, you’ll also win a special 3D Bluray player and 6 sets of glasses so you can share the 3D experience with your friends and family. See page 4 for details on how to enter.

Our menus have been given a makeover this month with plenty of exciting new options available. In Lawsons you’ll find all your favourites plus some new selections to whet your appetite and in Lucido we’ve listened to your feedback and added a range of traditional dishes.

President’s Report

We have just passed the half way mark for 2010 and the first six months have been strong, with revenue up 3.3% on the same period last year. In addition to excellent results, we continue to see growth in membership numbers and will shortly reach 32,000 members.

The Club’s Masterplan Development Application continues to progress and we are hopeful of receiving a positive outcome shortly as all major issues appear

to have been resolved. As we have previously advised, this large development will be staged over many years with the commencement of each stage subject to meeting required cash flow projections. We have commenced planning for a stage 1 development so that we will be able to begin as soon as practicable after we receive consent for our development.

While details for stage 1 can not be finalised until after consent has been received, it is likely that the majority of work to be undertaken in stage 1 will be on improving our car parking and vehicle access, including gaining access directly from the Great Western highway.

Unfortunately we did not pick up any awards at the ClubsNSW Awards for excellence on 4 July. Again, we have received feedback that we were very close in a number of categories and overall we continue to be recognised as one of the top performers in the state.

Congratulations to Mrs. Lena Mituseva who won the $42,750 Toyota RAV4 packed with goodies. It was a fantastic night and Lena was standing right near the barrel to see her ticket come out. enjoy the new car Lena.

I wish all of our dads a happy Father’s Day on September 5.

In the CommunityTeeing off for Australian GeniesOn Friday 25 June the Australian Genies hosted their annual fundraising golf day with Wenty Leagues as the major sponsor. Founded in 2000, the Australian Genies is a locally based charity staffed by volunteers (including many Wenty Members) who are dedicated to granting wishes to help children with severe disabilities between the ages of birth to eighteen years. The successful day raised almost $5,000.

Award winning ShaveOn the 24th June at a function at Parliament house hosted by the Minister for Water Phillip Costa, Wenty Leagues was presented with the Club Challenge Award as the Top Club fundraiser in the 2010 World’s Greatest Shave. Overall, Wenty raised more than $22,000 for The Leukaemia Foundation.

Wenty gets behind The MobWenty Leagues has again thrown its support behind The Mob bash car in the 2010 NSW Variety Bash. Money raised in sponsorship of the bash cars goes straight to Variety, the Children’s Charity and each team pays all their own costs in maintaining their cars and the crew.

A bash is not a race, but rather a fun drive through the outback with a few mates in old cars. Any car can enter but they must be built before 1974 and be prepared to withstand the impact of 4,000 kilometres of tracks that most 4WD’s fear to tread.

This year, the 26th bash, starts at B shed at Flemington Markets and passes through Temora, Cobar, Bourke, Moree, Goondawindi, Toowoomba and Lismore to finish at Byron Bay, 9 days later.

The Mob have raised over $200,000 for Variety in the last 7 years.

OAM for a Wenty LegendCongratulations to Foundation Member Wally Webster who was among those named on the Queen’s Birthday honours list this year. Wally was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) ‘For service to the community of Wentworthville, particularly through a range of sporting organisations’. Wally was the Club’s first member, was Secretary/General Manager for 30 years and director for a further 12 years.

Sub ClubsDISTRICT RUGBY LEAGUEAt the time of writing, the NSW Cup had completed 16 Rounds of their Competition. They had recorded 7 wins, 7 losses and 1 draw placing them in 7th position but needing to string a sequence of wins to consolidate. Although sitting further down the ladder than we’d like, the side is leading the points scored for but conversely do not have a good defensive record. The strength of the NSW Cup side will always be determined by the strength of the Parramatta NRL side. Unfortunately with injuries to their playing personnel and suspensions, the drain of players from the NSW Cup to the NRL is taking its toll. I am confident that when things start to settle down Wentworthville will start to win games and be the force expected. Congratulations to Lee Te Maari who was selected in the winning NSW Residents side that played Queensland Residents in the curtain raiser to the 3rd State of Origin Congratulations to Brett McKenna on being named Manager of the Residents side, to Tom humble who is now a regular in the NRL and Pele Peletelese who made his NRL debut in a recent game.As a flow on effect the Bundy Cup is similarly weakened through the loss of players to the NSW Cup. After 14 rounds the side had recorded 6 wins and 8 losses to be placed just outside of the top 5. Results in recent matches against Cabramatta and Penrith Brothers have indicated that the team is starting to play the football that won them a premiership last season. A continuation of this form will have the Brett Cook coached team in a position to again play a strong hand come finals time.The 98th year Reunion was held on Saturday, July 12 and a crowd of approximately 300 attended. A good night was had by all and it was pleasing to see some of the older players from the 40s and 50s era in attendance. Special guests Nathan Cayless and former Premier and local MP Nathan Rees added to the occasion. A great job by the organising Committee and Leagues Club staff made the night a success. We now begin planning for the 100th year event in two years time.Arrangements for the annual Family Fun Day on August 8 are well under way. There will be plenty of rides, jumping castles and a petting zoo. We look forward to seeing all the kids bringing their mums and dads along to have an enjoyable day as well as be entertained by 3 great games of Rugby League - Sydney Shield Vs Sydney Bulls at 11.40am, Bundy Cup Vs Sydney Bulls at 1.20pm and NSW Cup Vs North Sydney at 3.00pm.

FISHInG15 May 2010There were 2 trips scheduled for this day in May. There was a Club trip and a Fishing Clubs’ Association (FCA) trip. The latter had 5 fishos from Wenty leagues chosen to represent the Western Division. The FCA trip left from Rose Bay with very rough weather and swells up to 5 metres. The Western Division came a disappointing 2nd with the only notable catch being a trag (1.6kgs) caught by D.Prestipino. The club trip was also disappointing with very rough seas. The day’s catch included 3 sargent bakers, 7 morwong, 6 snapper, 6 pigfish, 6 sweep and 1 ling fish. 19 June 2010The weather report from the night before forecasted light winds and calm conditions. When we arrived at Kiama the wind was blowing 30 knots from the SSW with freezing conditions. The trip was cancelled.Footnote- A tall but true Fishos tail!It was early one Saturday morning, the wind was blowing from the SSW at over 30 knots and the sea was very choppy when 2 of our experienced Fishos let the big one go. The unbelievable thing is they didn’t know their loss. LInE DAnCInGThe line dancers have just started a new and fun beginners session which will go for 8 weeks.

On July 26, club members started the new class at 7pm in the Wally Webster Sports Complex. These sessions allow you to bring the kids and participate as a family - kids are always free. We then follow on with the advanced class at 8pm. The second Friday of each month is party time with the opportunity to show off what you have learnt in class. These nights are combined with local community fundraising and awareness for Ronald MacDonald house - Westmead (RMh). The line dancers have generously raised hundreds of dollars which has always been greatly appreciated by RMh.

NAIDOC week during July allowed some our dancers to try out their performance skills on stage. Also in July a theatre party to ‘Westside Story’ allowed many to pick up some stage tips and dance style. In August, Pioneer Centre for the disabled in Guildford, have asked to have another line dance term. This gives our dancers an opportunity to give back to the community.

All general club members are encouraged to drop in and have a look at the line dance sessions. We look forward to seeing you!

SQUASH8 of our members participated in the NSW Masters Squash Titles recently, held at Cardiff NSW.

It is pleasing to report that 3 of these members won their respective State Titles including Sandra Gallagher, Martin Gunn and Moya Sambuco. Wendy Fox was a runner up in her division.

A number of our members will be participating in the Australian Masters Squash Championships which are being held in hobart (TAS) on September 7-17.

Our top two Division 1 sides played off for the 2010 Autumn Pennant Competition. Four other sides also made the Grand Finals. The Club will have 15 teams participating in the 2010 Spring Pennant Competition.

Arrangements have been made with the Coolibah Squash and Fitness Centre (Paton Street, Merrylands – Ph 9681 2500) whereby any member of Wenty Leagues can now play squash on weekdays from 9am-5pm and any time over the weekend for just $5 per player (subject to court availability). TABLE TEnnISVivian Tan, the current Wenty Leagues Sportswoman of the Year, has recently returned from representing Australia at the World team championships in Moscow. Australia achieved mixed results but were able to maintain their position in Division 2 due in no small part to Vivian’s efforts whereby she won the deciding match on all 3 possible occasions. This has seen Vivian’s world ranking reach a career high of 232, up from 335 prior to the event. Along with Zankar Pandya - Mens over 30’s - from our A grade team, Vivian also represented NSW in the recent national titles held at Gosford with both teams winning gold. The Summer Competition of Table Tennis Western Sydney in now completed with Wentworthville being successful in the D grade competition - Well done Gavin, Gina, Pradeep and Danny. Our Monday evening handicap competition, which is open to all comers regardless of your level of experience, continues to grow with six newcomers in the last month. We have revamped the format to encourage players who have not only participated in the past but as always we are seeking to grow our sport within the club with new players particularly welcome. QUInLAn SHIELDRound 8 – Wenty played Mounties at Mounties: Bowls lost 6.5-5.5, darts lost 14-1, snooker lost 5-4 and table tennis lost 6-3. Overall it was a 8-0 loss.Round 9 – Wenty played Parramatta RSL at Wenty: Bowls and darts won in a walk over, snooker won 7-2 and table tennis won 7-2. Overall it was a 8-0 win to WentyFinal Round – Wenty played Norths at Norths: Bowls lost 9-3, darts won in a walk over, snooker lost 6-3 and table tennis won 5-4. Overall it was a 6-2 loss.In our semi final against Parramatta Leagues, we drew 4-4. For the play-off, one sport was drawn out of a hat - Darts was drawn. This meant we played two team events for darts and one team event for the other three sports. Table tennis won, snooker lost, bowls won and darts won one of their two games. This gave Wenty a 3-2 win and meant we had to play Canterbury for a spot in the grand final. Unfortunately Wenty lost the final. Many thanks to all of our players who competed this year.The grand final was hosted by Wenty Leagues. Thank you to those players who turned up to mark the games. Congratulations to Mounties who won the grand final in a close battle with Canterbury.Individual events: Our bowls side finished 4th, darts 4th, table tennis 4th and our snooker side were equal first until the last round and dropped down to finish 4th also after losing their last round. In the semi finals Wenty did not compete to our full potential. Bowls lost to Mounties, table tennis lost to Norths, darts lost to Parramatta Leagues and snooker emerged as winners over Norths 5-4. The final for snooker was held at Wenty on July 7. Our snooker team were unfortunately a player short and were defeated by Parramatta Leagues. This concludes the Quinlan Shield competition for 2010. SWIMMInGeven though we are between seasons, we have still been actively swimming. On the June long weekend, 25 Wenty swimmers travelled to the Queanbeyan Legacy Charity swim. We swam competitively, but more importantly helped raise $2,600 for Legacy. This swim is now in its 24th year and has raised almost $50,000. Wenty Leagues has been a major contributor to this fundraising event for the last 10 years. Wenty also wow’d the after swim function with a fantastic rendition of “I do like to be beside the Seaside” in 1920’s swimming attire. It was a sight to behold.Upcoming events include carnivals at Souths Juniors and Dee Why RSL in August. We start our season at the Wenty pool again in late September. Golf ClubWenty Leagues’ golf club celebrated its 50th Anniversary on Sunday, 13 June with a round of golf at Glenmore followed by a reunion back at the Leagues Club. We had over 90 past and present members at the reunion including 50 players for golf in the morning. We had players coming from Queensland, Grafton, Dubbo, Nelsons Bay, the Central Coast and other country areas. The day was a great success including good company, good food and some good golf.

Ray Turner, Pat Collison and Dennis McCaffery were three of the original players who formed our club in 1958 and were back for the anniversary. 50 years on and we are still playing golf every week with the golf club. Many former players attended the reunion and shared stories of great shots and games played in the past. It may take me another 50 years to prove or disprove some of the claims they were making in these stories.

After 50 years of club golfing, here are some interesting numbers our members have racked up:• 2,400 games played• 115,200 individual rounds of golf played• 10,944,345 individual strokes• 460,879 shots on par 3’s• 29 hole-in-ones on record

If you are interested in joining the golf club and adding to these numbers over the next 50 years, you are most welcome. We are always encouraging new players to join our club.

The golf club plays every week in rain, hail or shine. If commitment is holding you back from joining the club, this is not a problem. We know our members can’t make it every week, but on average our players are hitting off around 40 times a year.

Our handicaps are currently between 5 and 36 with a core group of 24 players each week, but we are always looking for new members. To join the golf club, new members must submit 3 cards playing golf with us or have a Golf Link handicap. however, a word of advice to people considering playing golf for the first time, I encourage you to have some lessons before joining as it could be an expensive exercise.

The golf club plays early Sunday mornings with hit-off times from 6am in summer and from 8am in winter. Some of the courses we play at include Penrith, Glenmore, Dunheved, Liverpool and Studley Park with costs ranging from $25 to $40 per game. Our yearly fixture card is on display on the notice board in the Magpie Bar or on Wenty’s website at www.wentyleagues.com.au.

DOMInOESOn Sunday, 11 July we held an open day for the dominoes club. We had 44 people play including a new bowler, a swimmer and a few players from Parramatta RSL. everyone had a great day.The winners on the day were Victor McGrath & Valerie S. 2nd place went to John Scott & Robert Garden and 3rd place went to Gloria Caine & Robert Caine. If you would like to give dominoes a go, come to our next open day.
