The Journey to Ordination

A journey often takes time … and my journey to ordination as a priest in the Anglican Church

started some years ago when I was 18 years old! That was a long time ago and was the route

that I would like to have taken on leaving school. However, such a pathway was not open to

me and it was probably not the right pathway at the time. I had listened to God carefully and

prayerfully at the time and felt called to some form of ministry but none at that time was

available as women could not be ordained. The process took some time but the call was

always there throughout my life.

I went into teaching, married and had children and I found that my family life and experience

became an important part of judging if this was the correct route for me. I always had

positions of involvement in churches that I attended, e.g. PCCs/PCC Secretary/worship leader

and also a leader of some of the uniformed organisations on behalf of the church.

However, one day in 2007 the opportunity arose for me to do more, and once again God (and

others) spoke to me, “I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will

go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I; send me!” Isaiah 6: 8

It was not difficult as there were so many opportunities available. I completed a ‘Called to

Serve’ course which is an excellent self-discernment process. There was much further

discernment by the diocese which resulted in a selection panel followed by training (which

continues throughout the life of clergy in some way). I have been fortunate in attending many

of the well known theological colleges during summer schools and sharing the journey with

others.

I was then ordained: this is the act of conferring holy orders upon someone, an appointment to

church ministry. The first stage is ordination to the role of deacon or minister of the Church.

This role is one of servanthood, as the word derives from the Greek word diakonos ‘servant’

to perform the acts of service and listening; serving and being served; and building bridges to

the wider community. A deacon’s ministry is an assistant ministry. However, after a very

positive and constructive first year as a deacon, I looked forward to “priesting”. Priesthood is

official or fully recognised ministry that involves presiding at the Eucharist (Holy

Communion), praying for others (which is our job), pronouncing the Blessing, absolving sins

(forgiving), preaching the scriptures, and helping others to discover what gifts God has given

them and helping to develop their ministry. After all we are all part of the body of Christ:

“For as one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function,

so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members of one

another.” Romans 12:4-6

Before my priesting I felt a very strong sense of God saying, “You did not choose me. I chose

you and sent you out to produce fruit, the kind of fruit that will last.” John 15: 16

This is my task for the future and the task of all disciples of God. We are all God’s ministers

in some way. I thank those of you who have shared in my journey to ordination as priest, as I

could not have done this without your support and encouragement.

Thank you to all those who came to the Cathedral to witness my ordination at the end of June.

I am sorry that no more grand occasions at the Cathedral are due for me in the future – well, I

don’t think so………..

The Herald 100 years ago, July 1914

Fine, hot, till 4th week (cooler, wetter).

In the Workhouse are 72 (up 5 on late June 1913). The House’s doctor

says the old men’s beds need renewing, and that the House lacks

stretchers and gear for fractures. (Kirkby Stephen’s Workhouse had

bunks for tramps. The bunks need to be movable, to clean behind).

Shap’s bobby P.C. Fisher has been moved to Workington. P.C.

Caruthers comes from there to Shap, now.

The late Mrs Huck (Shap) owned 43, Broughton St. Penrith, sold this

month for £160 (2014, = £12,800) by auction. Sold at The Queens

Head, Shap, Wednesday evening 8th July; at that sale Mr. A. Jackson,

Green Farm, Shap, bought the late Mrs. Clark’s house in Shap

(Mountain View) by auction for £190, and a 14½ acre field at Shap’s

south end £50.

The late Mr. Matthew Patterson’s only son Mr. William Harrison

Patterson, 23, was haymaking at Wickerslack when he ruptured himself,

fatally. His father was of Wyebourne, Shap; his grandparents were

from Brough.

Mr. John Hindson (Keld) was attacked by his stock bull, a 3 year old

Shorthorn, on Wednesday evening 22nd July. Badly hurt.

Died at Sleddale Hall, Shap, 17th Anne, youngest daughter of Mr. &

Mrs. S. C. Barnett, 19; funeral Monday 20th, 3pm, Shap Church.

So ends the Golden Age, of quiet progress. War is coming,

unnoticed as yet. Jeremy Godwin

Phyllis, Anne & John Brown sincerely thank doctors & staff of

Shap Medical Practice for their unfailing patience during

Jack’s long illness until his passing on June 15th. Also Nurses

of Appleby & Penrith Hospital, Eden Carers, Mothers Union

kindness shown and also offers of help. Not forgetting

Reverend Beverley Lock for the sensitive service at Carlisle

Councillors Come to You events 2014/15 Eden District Council's Executive and Leader will be holding meetings and public surgeries around the District during the next few months. This gives councillors the opportunity to hear the views from the local community about the services the Council provides and about other issues affecting life in the District.

Eden District Council Leader, Gordon Nicolson OBE said: "The Councillors Come to You Sessions and Leader's Surgeries are a valuable opportunity for us to communicate directly with local people and listen to and help address any concerns which they may have. We are holding meets across the District over the next eight months so people will have an opportunity to speak to us about issues such as the Draft Eden Local Plan, Footway Lighting provision and other matters that arise in the coming months."

The dates, venues and times of the Councillors Come to You sessions for 2014/2015, which are followed by a formal meeting of the Council's Executive and for the Council Leader's Public Surgeries are available on the website www.eden.gov.uk . No appointment is necessary, simply attend the venue and request to speak to the Council Leader.

Eden Local Plan Preferred Options Consultation 2014-2032 Join the conversation on future jobs and housing

Eden District Council is preparing a plan for the future of the district and we want to hear your views on important issues such as where new housing is built and allocating land for economic growth.

We will shortly be asking for your views on a Draft Local Plan; this document will help address the key issues facing the District including: How many new homes need to be built each year to meet housing needs

Where this housing could be located

How much land needs to be allocated for business expansion

How we ensure development is sustainable especially for rural communities

How we protect the area from inappropriate development

By joining the conversation on the Draft Local Plan you will be shaping Eden’s future and helping us to set out where best to accommodate the homes, jobs and infrastruture we need in the most sustainable way.

We are consulting local people on the Draft Eden Local Plan from the 21 July – 26 September 2014. We will be posting out copies of the consultation documents to local parish councils. The consultation documents will also be available to view at

www.eden.gov.uk/localplan2014 .

Local people can read a copy of the consultation documents and pick up a response form at various locations during the consultation period including: Mansion House/Library/Town Hall, Penrith, Shap Library. There will be a drop in event at Shap Memorial Hall on Thursday 4th September 4-7pm where you can view the consultation documents, plans and speak to a planner. You can submit your comments in the following ways during the consultation period: Online form: www.eden.gov/localplan2014/commentonline

HISTORY IN HOUSES by Jean Scott-Smith

No 65 – Fothergill

This house at the north

end of the village was

originally a farm and

probably dates from the

17th century; it takes its

name from the family of

that name. It had

outbuildings and land to

the rear; this would be cut

off by the railway, but can

be accessed by a bridge.

There are mullioned

windows and other old

architectural features but

no visible date stone.

We are told in Shappe in Bygone Days, that an entry in the first church

register reads: Ryc.(Richard) Foddergill, sonne to Willm, bd (baptised)

Sept 11 1587. We are also informed that one of the Fothergill family

buried in the churchyard was killed at the battle of Marston Moor. A

descendent George Fothergill is recorded as being interred in 1714.

At the turn of the 20th century this was the home of George Lomax

Topping, M.A., J.P. he was of the Rosgill family and a great benefactor

of the church at the time of the re-ordering.

Dr Nicholson lived here after he moved from the Rockery. It was

divided into two dwellings in the 1990s and has seen several changes

since then.

Amy Farrer

We apologise for the error in the last issue of Shap Today. As many of you will

know Amy was born at Sleagill and not Crosby Garrett. She was one of five

children of Jack and Cis Metcalf who in 1932 moved to Shap to set up a cafe and

bakery business (at the Top Cafe). In 1938 Amy married Ernie Farrer. They

moved to Crosby Garrett in 1947 to run the shop and Post Office returning to the

Top Cafe at Shap in 1960. Some years later Amy bought the Midtown property

and ran a shop and bakery there. Editor

*** Trespassing on School Property ***

Recently there have been a number of instances where children (usually

ex-pupils of our school) have climbed onto the school roof. This activity

carries a risk of injury to the children involved as well as risk of damage

to the school building which would be expensive to repair and potentially

disruptive to the functioning of the school.

Please be aware that, whilst there is a public footpath though the school

playing field and therefore accessible to anyone during school closure

periods, all other areas of the school are completely out of bounds and

any attempt to access these areas (including the roof) is trespass. The

police have advised that anyone seen trespassing should be reported by

calling 999 as it constitutes a crime in progress.

To protect the school from damage and disruption, I am asking for the

support of the community in tackling this problem. Please talk to people

you know whose businesses or homes overlook the school and be alert

when passing the school on your normal routines.

If any person sees anyone trespassing on school property, I urge

them to call the police immediately and inform me at the first

opportunity.

I am sure you will understand that I have a duty to the school to protect

our property and equally a duty to parents to inform them of their chil-

dren’s participation in potentially dangerous activities.

Thank you for your co-operation.

SHAP C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL

We have had a very busy and exciting last few weeks to the summer term! The annual sports day and swimming galas took place when the children enjoyed being outside competing for their team. The year 5/6 children also experienced a taste of bowling on the green led by the bowling club! The children in year 5/6 had a fantastic time at Fellside Outdoor centre where they spent 3 days mountain walking ,canoeing, ghyll scrambling and trying out archery! All the children in school have been busy with their entries for the forthcoming Shap show in September. We also had a visit from Ofsted in the last 2 weeks of term and enjoyed showing off our school. The report should be published in September. We said goodbye and good luck to the year 6 children who will be

moving on to the next step in their education. We hope they soon

settle in and make new friends. We will miss them all!

Eden Neighbourhood Policing in Shap My name is Dave Willetts and I am the Police Inspector responsible for policing in the Eden District. I know from the calls and letters I have received over the last few years, the concern the local community has about speeding through Shap village. Multi-agency work has continued over this period to reduce occurrences of speeding and I will ensure local police officers continue to conduct regular speeding enforcement checks around the village. However I’m also aware that it is not easy for those in and around Shap who want to meet face to face with the police to tell us what is going on. So I have decided to put a regular “police desk” in the you village. Every Wednesday between 0830 and 1130 hours an officer will attend Shap library to take reports and concerns from those who wish to meet us. It will also provide us with an opportunity to give out crime prevention advice and tell you about the latest trends in crime that may help you further safeguard your property. Of course the presence of a marked police vehicle in your village will also help to deter vehicles from speeding! We are lucky enough to live in one of the safest counties in the country and your Eden Neighbourhood Policing Team will continue to help keep it that way. We very much rely on a two way conversation with members of the public to help us achieve this aim. I hope you will pop down to see us at Shap library to keep that process going.

The Fire Service are planning to hold HeartStart sessions once it is in place, this will instruct people on how to use the equipment, which we are told is very easy. The Parish Council would like to encourage as many people as possible to undertake this training which is FREE - LOOK OUT for posters with details of the courses.

This could give you the confidence and skills to save a life - You never know when you might need them.

‘Tell the Gospel in your own words’

This is a five week course to be run weekly from Tuesday 2nd– 30th Sept. The

aim is to explore together the basics of putting together a ‘talk’ based on the

Bible readings from the Common Worship Lectionary.

This course does not commit anyone to speaking in public – it is an opportunity

to explore the first stages of ‘preaching’. It will however give participants the

opportunity to gain confidence and find their own voice in a friendly and

supportive group. The sessions will be an hour long followed by an optional

additional session of coaching in presentation skills. If you would like to join this group please speak to Beverley Lock (015396 24045) or

Elaine Allison (01931 716771). All sessions are at Orton Vicarage (CA10 3RQ)

Dates and times:

2nd Sept. 7.30pm 9th Sept. – 4pm (Deanery Synod in the evening)

16th Sept. 4pm 23rd Sept. 7.30pm 30th Sept. 7.30pm.

Reserve date 7th October 4pm

Confirmation in Autumn 2014.

Traditionally in the Church of England young people who have been baptised as

babies are offered the chance to be ‘Confirmed’. In a special service a Bishop

puts his hands on the person’s head and asks God to “Confirm O Lord your

servant …… with your Holy Spirit”. It can be a very moving experience as a

person declares publically they are a Christian.

To prepare for this we like to meet young people to think about this step. The

majority of these meetings will be over the summer holidays with two meetings

nearer the time to talk over any questions and discuss the service. I can meet

separately with adults who wish to consider Confirmation. Please ring me

(015396 24045) before 5th August if you are interested. Beverley Lock.
