DREAMS AND HOPES

Well, it is graduation season, and thus

transition season for many a graduate

throughout the country. Since we live in an

anxious time, the question of “What comes

next?” can be a daunting question.

If we’re not a graduate this year (or

haven’t been one recently), then we may be

tempted to think that the answer is easy:

work hard, knock on doors (physical or

electronic ones), seek opportunities, and take

the best offer. Or at least some version of

that.

But the problem is that it is hard to see far

down the road/years, especially during a time

of rapid change. So, if we are seeking a

choice to maximize our career or earnings-

potential, then the best we can do is make an

informed guess on what choice or path to

take.

Some graduates receive much affirmation

and praise for their decisions; others do not,

especially if their choice is outside of the

family or community norm. Most receive a

mixed reaction to their decision(s). Actually,

one of the hardest choices is whether to

“lock-in” a certain study or career path, or to

leave one’s options much more open.

Certainly, there are advantages and

disadvantages to both, and some degree of

risk to both. {So, let’s all put this on our

month of May to-do lists: Encourage a

graduate (or anyone making a major life

transition) today!}

Speaking of risks, one of the topics at our

last Philippian Project gathering was “Holy

Risk.” Put simply, Holy Risks are the risks

we (as a church family) take in fulfilling our

Calling as disciples of Jesus. In

acknowledging our need to engage in Holy

Risk, we are affirming that we must (to some

degree) risk our assets and ourselves to be

faithful to Jesus. This has always been true;

but, in my experience, obscured in many

cases in the late 20th century by relative

stability and affluence, and a large number of

growing churches. Now that most churches

are not growing, and our age/era is less stable

overall, we are confronted more urgently with

the “What comes next?” question.

Despite the urgency, we need not be too

anxious, IF we will embrace the possibilities

of the changes and decisions that come our

way, and IF we will persist in prayer for

faithfulness on our part, even as we pray for

reminders of God’s continual faithfulness.

There is plenty of evidence of God’s

faithfulness in Scripture. So, let Philippians

3: 10 – 14 be our marching orders!

Aralynn Grace Garcia

The Adult Sunday School Class would like to thank you for the pill bottles. We have sent 23 pounds of bottles. If you know of a local medical mission we could help,

please let us know. Please continue to donate your bottles.

We have been learning about The Miracles of Jesus and it has been very informative. Everyone is welcome.

On Sunday, May 20, we will begin a new study: Max Lucado’s "Anxious for Nothing". In this five-session Video Bible Study we will explore God's treatment plan for anxiety found in Philippians 4:4-8. Let's find calm in a chaotic world together. See you any Sunday morning at 9:30.

Thanks to all who came to the potluck dinner on April 15th. The food was delicious and we found out that Luke Hight is an exceptional 42 player.

Everyone also seemed very happy to hear that Rosie and Anthony have been hired to cleanup and put the tables and chairs away after all of the scheduled quarterly Potluck Dinners from this point on.

Please join us next time for food, fellowship and fun!

Rummage Sale

Set-up / Pizza Party - June, 1,

Friday, 6:00 – 8:30 pm

In her May 26, 2014 article in the Presbyterian

Outlook, Rev. Christine Chakoian says,

“Rummage is ‘the joyful feast of the Kingdom

of God.’ People come to volunteer and to shop

from east and west and north and south …

Rich and poor, black and white, male and

female, Presbyterian and Catholic and Muslim

and Jew and everything else under the sun —

we roll up our sleeves together, we shop side

by side, we share stories and lives, we weep in

compassion and laugh in hysterics.”
