FISC Sigonella changes name
Fleet and Industrial Supply Center(FISC) Sigonella officially changed itsname to NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Cen-ter (FLC) Sigonella effective July 1.
The new name for FISC Sigonella– as well as all the other seven FISCcommands around the world – isbeing changed to better emphasizethe FISC specific roles in the NAV-SUP global logistics support enter-prise.
This change is part of the NavalSupply Systems Command overall;“One NAVSUP… One Enterprise”branding initiative to provide custo-mers and stakeholders a clearer un-derstanding of the capabilities ofNAVSUP organizations.
According to NAVSUP comman-der, Rear Adm. Mike Lyden, ‘OneNAVSUP…One Enterprise’ connectsNAVSUP global logistics support net-work construct where each activityexecutes its mission as a node of thenetwork, vice an individual entity.FISC Sigonella’s next, higher echeloncommand, Commander Fleet and In-dustrial Supply Centers, is also chan-ging its command moniker July 1, to
NAVSUP Global Logistics Support,as well.
“FISCs emphasize the capabilitiesin the NAVSUP global logistics sup-port business lines, helping customerseasily navigate the products and ser-vices available within our organiza-tion,” said COMFISCS Rear Adm.Mark Heinrich.
FISC Sigonella’s sites and deta-chments in Europe, Africa, and Sou-thwest Asia will also change names, each to be known as “NAVSUP FleetLogistics Centers” to include ourNAVSUP Logistics Center here in Si-gonella.
“Our names are changing but ourmission remains to deliver the rightoperational logistics solutions to theNavy and our joint war fighters,” saidHeinrich. “The COMFISCS team ofmilitary, civilian logistics professio-nals, contractors and foreign nationalslocated around the world will conti-nue to supply the Navy’s ships, air-craft, shore commands andexpeditionary forces with the essentialitems needed to execute their missions

Direct LineFirst of all, I would like to
thank MWR, Security and all ofthe other Great Americans re-sponsible for putting on theGreat American Celebration ofour country’s 235th birthday, and the signing of the Declara-tion of Independence, over theweekend. Since 1776, July 4thhas been celebrated as thebirth of American indepen-dence, with typical festivitiesranging from fireworks, para-des and concerts to more casualfamily gatherings and barbe-cues. I hope everyone that washere during the long weekendtook the opportunity to comeout and enjoy the festivities. Itwas a great opportunity to cele-brate such an important and si-gnificant moment in ourcountry’s history; and what bet-ter way to do this by sharingthe celebration with our hostcountry friends and our coali-tion partners. As I have said inthe past, our friends here in Si-cily serve a vital role in the
daily operations of our Base, and the chance to share theseevents with them is really so-mething special. I commend allof you on your warm welcometo all those that attended theevents.
As we move into the heat ofthe summer, it is importantthat you take care of yourself, your family and your shipma-tes. Be sure to enjoy times withfriends and family and all thatSicily has to offer, but please besure to take care of your bodyby ensuring that you remainhydrated at all times, espe-cially during extended outdooractivities. Drink plenty ofwater and don’t overindulgewhen drinking alcohol andavoid high-risk summer activi-ties when intoxicated. Takecare of each other and have thecourage to step in and preventan unsafe activity in becominganother summer statistic. Please help me make this anenjoyable and safe summer
season for everyone in the Sigo-nella community.
If you have spent a summerin “Sunny Sicily,” then youknow it can get hot – it’s al-ready pretty warm and I’msure it will only get hotter aswe move through July and intoAugust. If you are like me, thehotter it gets, the greater thetemptation is to crank up theAC; however, this also meansthat the warmer it gets, themore electricity Sigonellauses…and you’d be shocked ifyou knew how much it all costs.
I welcome any suggestionson how we can all lower ourenergy usage. I’m by no meansan expert, but I’m reminded ofsomething Dennis Miller oncesaid, “I rant, therefore I am.”So, I’m going to rant a bit onways that I’ve been told willlower our energy usage andmake us a much more efficientbase. Obviously, I can’t do thisalone, so I need each and everyperson to be proactive to help
keep our energy usage ata minimum and our waterusage as low as possible.
Keep the thermostatset no lower than 75F…close doors and windowsin air conditioned spa-ces…turn off lights whennot required (I’m stilltrying to figure out how toreduce the night-lightingat Marinai and on NASI)…turn off computersand unnecessary equip-ment when not in use…The bottom line is that ifyou aren’t using some-thing, please just turn itoff. Basic stuff, right? But if we ALL take care todo it, the results in termsof financial savings and redu-ced stress on the environment, will be spectacular!
I realize that the Sigonellacommunity has already madelarge strides in lowering energyand water usage over the pastfew years; however, making the
best use of our precious resour-ces requires constant and pro-active attention. If we can eachmake it a point to focus on ourenergy habits, I have no doubtwe can continue to reduce ourusage and make Sigonella oneof the most efficient bases inthe world.

Reflection on sacramentof holy matrimony
When a man and a woman gaveeach other for marriage they took avow in these words: “I (Groom/Bridename), take you (name of thegroom/bride) to be my wife/husband.I promise to be true to you in goodtimes and in bad, in sickness and in he-alth. I will love you and honor you allthe days of my life.” Or another form ofvow: “I (Groom/Bride name), takeyou (name of the groom/bride) for mylawful wife/husband, to have and tohold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sick-ness and in health, until death do uspart.” What a noble words to say toeach other. It is a vow of unselfish loveand commitment. Are these words stillrelevant in our time? Of course it is.
Marriage debate is so pervasive inour society. When you look at the mar-riages in our time, how many of themstayed together and true to their vows as
husband and wife? Did they marry eachother because they are young, rich, he-althy, and use each other while they can? What about when they become old, poor, and sick? Do they just separateeach other because they are unusable? Is there any “love” or “commitment” or“faithfulness” involve when they said“yes” to each other? What about faith inGod? Is God a part of their married life? What are the reasons why there are somany marriages breaks up?
In all of these questions it remindsme of what the late Pope John Paul IItaught regarding marriage when he ad-dressed married couples in the cathe-dral of Taranto, Italy on October 28,1989. The excerpted address was firstappeared in L’Osservatore Romano,English language edition, December11, 1989 and reprinted in the Soul Ma-gazine in 1993.
