Nearest Point of Relief from Casual Water Is Back on Cart Path

QUESTION: A player’s ball lies on a paved cart path from which he wishes to take relief under Rule 24-2b(i). It appears that the nearest point of relief will be in a large area of casual water which adjoins the cart path and the nearest point of relief from the casual water under Rule 25-1b(i) would be back on the cart path. What are the player’s options? Answer on page 6.

The Family Course Program enables the members with younger players or beginners, a golf experience that will result in a more time-friendly and player friendly activity with the whole family! Scorecards for the Family Course may be acquired in the golf shop.

Get out and play with the Family!

RULES ANSWERANSWER: The player may proceed in accordance with Rule 24-2 and then, if applicable, Rule 25-1. He is not entitled to take relief from both the immovable obstruction and the casual water in a single procedure, unless after proceeding under these Rules, the player is essentially back where he started and it is evident that such a procedure is necessary to obtain relief from both conditions.

Therefore, the player should proceed as follows:1. He may lift and drop the ball in accordance with Rule 24-2b(i) in the casual water.2. He may play the ball as it lies or take relief from the casual water, in which case he would lift and drop the ball in accordance with Rule 25-1b(i).3. If the ball when dropped comes to rest in such a position that there is interference by the cart path, he may play the ball as it lies or proceed in accordance with Rule 24-2b(i). If the nearest point of relief is in such a position that there would be interference by the casual water, as an additional option, the player may, in equity (Rule 1-4) obtain relief without penalty as follows: Using the new position of the ball on the cart path, the nearest point of relief from both the cart path and the casual water shall be determined which is not in a hazard or on a putting green. The player shall lift the ball and drop it within one club-length of and not nearer the hole than the nearest point of relief, on a part of the course which avoids interference by the cart path and the casual water and is not in a hazard or on a putting green. If the dropped ball rolls into a position where there is interference by either the cart path or the casual water, Rule 20-2c applies. The same principle would apply if there was interference from any two conditions, i.e., casual water, a hole made by a burrowing animal, an immovable obstruction, from which relief without penalty was available and in taking relief from one condition it resulted in interference from the second condition.

HOLE IN ONE!Friday, May 10th, 2019

Jeff Bard shot a hole in one on hole #3 from 134 yards and used a 9 iron.

He played with Tim Werner, Bob De Smedt, and Jim McLaughlin.

Congratulations Jeff on the hole in one!!

Activities include our popular Junior golf clinics, golf camps, and junior golf tournaments.

TENNIS TIPby Josh Vissman, USPTA Elite Professional

TENNIS DOUBLES STRATEGY

In doubles matches, your biggest concern should be your positioning and ball control. Your priority will be to cover half the court, while your counterpart covers the other half. Regarding positioning, there are three main positions you and your partner can take, which might seem pretty obvious once we explain them. The first is one up and one back, meaning one player will be situated at the net while the other would be at the baseline. The second positioning is the most aggressive, the double up means that both players will be at the net. Lastly, there’s the double back (strictly defensive tennis doubles strategy), where both players stay at the baseline. Now then, let’s go over a little about each positioning.

ONE UP ONE BACK

The one up one back strategy will have one player stand at the net (the person not receiving or serving) while one player stands at the baseline (the player receiving or serving). The person at the net will be responsible for their side of the court while also covering the middle. On the other hand, the person at the baseline will have to cover their side of the court while also covering the middle for any deep shots that their partner at net cannot reach. The one up one back strategy is very versatile since it combines both offense and defense, which is why you often see this formation as games start off. The primary weakness of this tennis doubles strategy is the fact that there is a large angular gap between the partners, which a powerful crosscourt shot hit between the two could easily result in a point for the opposing team. However, there is a way to prevent this from happening. One of my favorite tennis doubles strategy to use would be the switch, where my partner and I would frequently switch sides during a point. This puts a lot of pressure on the opposing team, since it effectively diminishes the chance of hitting a crosscourt winner. Their only option left would be to hit down the line, but there are two main disadvantages to that. First, the net is higher on both sides near the posts compared to the very middle, while secondly, the ball travels less while hit down the line compared to crosscourt, which means that there is a higher chance that the ball will bounce out.

DOUBLE UP

Double up is a very aggressive positioning, where both players go up to the net in order to apply pressure. The reason why it’s so aggressive is the fact that there is no one to cover the baseline (as in one up one back), since both players are on the offense at net. Usually, both players start off in the one up one back position (with the player at baseline either serving or receiving) and then find an opportunity to bring the baseline player to net. This often involves either a good serve or a wide shot that gives the baseline player time to rush to the net. This tennis doubles strategy is the same one used in singles, although it is formally known as serve-and-volley in 1vs1 matches. The only difference, however, is that there is already someone at net, which makes it much easier to find an opportunity to bring the baseline player to net. The double up strategy is ideal for putting a lot of pressure on the opponent, since whatever the opponents hits will be returned right back by either one of the net players. This results in less time for the opposing team to respond to shots, and can open the double up players to new angles that can have the opponent constantly moving. Also, overheads and drive volleys. These are very powerful shots you can use that are difficult for the opposing team to return. This tennis doubles strategy is highly recommended for tall people with a wider reach or for players who have a powerful serve and great net skills.

DOUBLE BACK

The double back strategy is strictly for defensive purposes, and should only be used if you and your partner prefer to play it safe. Most of the time, it is used when the opposing team are either double up or in an aggressive one up one back positioning. The main strategy with this positioning is to return the opponent’s powerful shots until an opportunity arises to punish them (typically with a lob or an offensive shot). Staying at the baseline allows for powerful shots as well as eliminating the chance of passing shots. The main disadvantages of this tennis doubles strategy are angular shots in the forecourt, drop shots, and the fact that your team provides no net pressure. That’s why it’s also important to change your tennis doubles strategy up during a match in order to respond to live situations that could result in your team winning the point.

FITNESS TIP – DON’T FORGET THE WATER!by Mike Blasser, Personal Trainer, SFN Temperatures are rising. Daylight is longer. Those outdoor activities you love may now cause you to become overheated. Just sitting in the sun on a hot and humid day can cause dehydration. It is important that you get enough to drink. Staying hydrated helps the heart pump blood through the vessels more easily and helps the muscles perform at their best. The National Academy of Medicine recommends around 16 cups of fluid per day for men and around 11 cups of fluid per day for women. The fluids can come from both foods and beverages. Examples of fresh foods that contain high amounts of water are: berries, carrots, celery, cucumbers, lettuce, peppers, watermelon, tomatoes, spinach, and citrus fruits. You may want to do your workout inside in cooler temperatures. Your time inside may prove to be more productive. It’s recommended to drink 2 cups of water before a workout. Drink up to a cup of water every 15-20 minutes during an activity. After exercising, replace the fluids you lost by drinking or eating foods that contain fluids. About 3 cups worth. Dehydration can negatively affect physical performance, concentration and mood. Some symptoms of dehydration are thirst, headache, dizziness, and muscle cramps. Don’t wait till you feel thirsty. You may already be dehydrated. Go ahead and exercise inside or enjoy the outdoors. Just don’t forget the water.

Come join the Water Aerobics ClassMonday and Friday from 9:00 – 10:00 am throughout the summer!

Water aerobics, also called aqua aerobics, uses the natural resistance and buoyancy of water against your body to provide a wide variety of

conditioning activity. No swimming is required in water aerobics, and flotation devices are used frequently. Water exercise helps increase your energy, stamina and strength -- and is a healthy way to cool off in the summer.

Make sure before starting an aerobics routine or class, you check with your health care professional.
