Dear Friends:An Englishman recently said the major-

ity of American tourists made a marathonrace of their sightseeing. I almost feel hewas justified in saying that because thatis almost what we have done the pastmonth. Dr. and Mrs. C. S. Reddy withwhom I had visited for 2 months nearManila, P. I. and I left Manila the a.m. ofAugust 31st. They had to be back at Amesbefore October 1st. We flew to Bangkokwhere we were houseguests of Dr. andMrs. Edgar Vestal over the weekend. Ofcourse, we enjoyed their hospitality andmanaged to crowd in a little sightseeingand an hours shopping. Then early Sun-day a.m. a boat ride on the Chao PhyaRiver was especially interesting as we rodeout to see the floating markets and thelife of the people who spend their entirelives living along side the river or thekiongs (canals). Monday p.m. we flew toNew Delhi. India. We spent Tuesdaysightseeing. Delhi City (new) and OldDelhi are side by side. In new Delhi arethe new modern government buildings,while in old Delhi are the many historicmonuments, temples and forts. The na-tonal,. shrine "Rajghat" dedicated to thememory of Mahatma Gandhi was very im-pressive. We also enjoyed the ivory andbrass shops. Tuesday we drove to Agra(about a 41/2 hour drive) to see the TajMahal. The next a. m. was spent gettingthru customs red tape to send a suitcaseair freight to London (baggage over-weight) and in the p.m. we flew to Karochi,Pakistan, arriving about 5 p.m. We weretaken to the Luxury Beach Hotel for dinnerand given a room-expecting to leave at3:30 a.m. I found Lowell Gatt's name in

the telephone directory who with his wife,came for me at the hotel and we had adelightful visit. However we did not leaveKarachi until 3:30 next p.m. We did somesightseeing in the a.m. but as it was aholiday - no shopping. We arrived latethat night at Beirut, Lebanon so missedout on our day there. Saturday a.m. Mrs.Reddy and I flew to Jerusalem for a 2 daystay. We had a fine guide who knew hisBiblical history. Our tour began in theroom declared to be Court of PontiusPilate, after which we walked the 14 sta-tions (the way of Christ's walk with thecross). We visited the Mount of Olives,Garden of Gethsemane, several churches,Jericho, Bethany, Bethlehem and saw theRiver Jordan and waded in the Dead Sea.We left Jerusalem thankful we had beenthere but saddened to realize a stone wallwith a "no man's land" (instant deathif stepped into) dividing one portion ofJerusalem from the major portion of thecity in the land where the greatest peaceshould be observed but instead hatredexists.

In flying to Rome, Italy, we spent threehours in the airport in Istanbul, Turkey.It was quite late when we arrived in Romewhere we had three days. Rome haschanged considerably since I had been thereas a college girl. I was glad to againvisit the Vatican, see the old Roman ruinsand the busy life of the city. The shopwindows were most attractive and theprices quite tempting. It was difficult toshop and get around when away from theregular tourist area because fewer peoplespoke English.

From Rome we flew to Paris, arrivinglate Friday night and we left Sunday a.m.(It was my birthday and a wire from my

November, the month when MotherNature takes her paint brush and paintsscenery such as we never see at any othertime of the year. I have heard hundredsof people say they like fall the best of anytime throughout the entire year and I amcertain it is because of the beautiful color-ing. This year is no exception. I only wishit would last longer but it is short-lived,and Mother Nature is now preparing forthe winter months ahead. I have receivedpredictions for the approaching winterfrom several radio listeners and those whohave written me are forecasting a coldwinter with more snow than usual. Thesepredictions are based upon various signsranging from the tightness of the husks onthe corn to a bumper crop of walnutswhich the squirrels are laying away forwinter.

The past couple of weeks have certainlybeen eventful ones in the May family. Mymother returned home October 15 after afive and a half month trip which took hercompletely around the world. She visitedthe Philippines, Japan, Hong Kong, Thia-land, Cambodia, India, Pakistan, Jerusalem,Italy, France, Denmark, Sweden, England,Scotland and Ireland. The trip wasn't asstrenuous as one might expect and I sin-cerely believe Mother looks and feels thebest she has in years. She brought somelovely things home with her and I imaginesome of her close friends will be receivingsome of these gifts for Christmas.

Naturally, Mother brought somethinghome to the grandchildren. She broughtkimonos from Japan, a Japanese doll, andtwo or three other items for her fourgranddaughters. She brought Eddie a pairof slippers from Japan, also a Japanesecoat called a "happy coat", and a doubledeck toy bus from England. Eddie thinksthe bus is about the finest thing he hasever had because he is at the age where heis exceedingly happy with toys. His fav-orites seem to be a fire engine and a train.If he continues his interest in trains, we

probably be looking for an electrictrain for him before too long.

Another exciting thing that happened toour family recently was the naming of myniece, Betty Jane Rankin, as the Shenan-doah High School Homecoming Queen forthis year. The queen candidates, of whichthere were three, were nominated by theShenandoah High School football squad,and the queen was named at the Home-coming football game on Friday, October18. If moral support helped any, BettyJane certainly had that because my sister,brother-in-law, mother, Diane Rankin,Annette, Karen, Eddie, together withEleanor and myself, were all there hopingBetty Jane would be named the queen. Allthree candidates were lovely girls andBetty Jane herself remarked afterwardsthat she felt it was a fine honor to benamed the Homecoming Queen but it was ashame the other two couldn't have beenchosen too. Betty Jane graduates fromhigh school this year and will be going tocollege next fall.

Everyone seems to be busy at this timeof the year. The farmers are picking thecorn crop which is the best we have hadfor several years. Other folks are likewisebusy with their many activities. Moisture -wise, we are in better shape than we havebeen for some time. We feel the fall rainsare nature's way of putting moisture in theground for next years crops. We had morerain at Shenandoah during October thanwe normally have for the month of Octo-ber and November. I wonder if this mightbe a forerunner of a winter with heavysnow? Time will tell. In the meantime,everyone is in the midst of their fall work,getting set for winter.

I hope you have a pleasant Thanksgiving.Most stores display their Christmas decora-tions after Halloween, more or less by-passing Thanksgiving. We have a greatdeal to be thankful for in this country, solets preserve the full meaning of Thanks-giving.

Sorry not to have any new picture onthis page this month and I really don'thave any good excuse. When we werehaving all those beautiful sunshiny days inthe middle of October, I just didn't thinkabout it. Then the latter part of the month,it was either rainy or cloudy or stormy so,consequently, no picture.

So far, the Field tribe has not been hitvery hard by the flu. Two of the grand-children were out of school three or fourdays with light cases and by the time youare reading this, chances are pretty goodthat two or three more will have had it.John Fishbaugh, Zo's boy, was out nearly aweek and Bill Field, Bob's boy, about thesame. We haven't heard from Peg thisweek, so don't know whether her boys havehad it yet or not. So far, all of the Fieldadults have escaped completely.

I am writing this column on Thursdayafternoon, October the 24th, and Jennieand I and Bill Field are starting for theOzarks come daylight tomorrow morning,expecting to get back home Tuesday, Oc-tober 29th.

Up until yesterday, our plans were forour neighbors across the street, Tom Saw-yer and his wife, Alice Gayle, to go with us.However, yesterday their oldest boy, Steve,began running a fairly high temperature,although he didn't show any of the othersymptoms of flu. Naturally, the Sawyerswill not go with us and leave a sick boyon his grandparents hands. So, we won'tknow until this evening, definitely, whetherthey are going with us or not.

The place we are heading for is the BullShoals Lake which is partly in southernMissouri and partly in northern Arkansas,the same place where Jennie and I spenta weekend in September. We will againstay at Carl Hayden's Beaver Brook Lodgeat Kissee Mill. That's the upper end ofBull Shoals Lake.

The Haydens have a lovely motel, justfour years old and completely modern inevery respect, located about a half milefrom the lake itself on top of the ridge.The fishing was very good when we werethere in September and Carl assures usthat it is equally good all winter long. Ifwe have good luck this time, chances arethat we might take two or three moreweekends off during the winter. So if youdon't hear me on the air some morning,you will know where we are.

This certainly has been a wonderful fallfor flowers of all kinds, especially roses.I honestly believe that our roses have beenmore beautiful the last month, than theywere in June. We neglected to keep themproperly sprayed during the wet weather inthe fall, and as a consequence, the leaf spotgot started and some of the bushes arealmost completely bare of leaves. Thatdoesn't seem to stop their blooming any.

The mums have been especially beauti-ful the past two or three weeks. On accountof the bright sunshine thru September andearly October, the mums were severalweeks late this year as it takes cool weath-er and cloudy days to bring them out. Theyfinally made it, however, as we have nothad any killing frost here in Shenandoah asyet. We did have a light frost on October17th, but it didn't seem to hurt the mumsin the least. About all it killed was pump-kin and squash vines and the tops of thetomatoes.

The forecast today calls for a hard freezetonight, if the sky clears. So when we getback home again next week, things willprobably look very much different thanthey do now but we are almost two weekspast our normal killing frost date, already,so we shouldn't complain in the least.

Doris probably told you in her columnabout the experience we had at our housea few days ago when I was putting thefinal coat of white paint on the inside ofthe new cabinet which I built for Jenniein the northeast corner of the kitchen. Itcertainly was a mess for a while but itdidn't take very long to clean up the paintand the toughest job was rewaxing theentire floor and the lower part of all thecabinets. I don't think any woman everhad enough cupboard space or closet space,but these new cabinets certainly shouldhold Jennie for a while. The doors aremade of birch and the body is made of fir.We gave them a natural finish to exactlymatch the rest of the cabinets in the kit-chen, which took a little figuring and ex-perimenting, the older cabinets having beenin place for three years and darkened alittle but we got an exact match, luckily.

There is plenty of time for plantingDutch bulbs and peonies if you haven't al-ready done so. In fact any time beforethe ground freezes up for winter is all rightbut, naturally, the sooner you get it donethe better. Remember to plant the peoniesvery shallow with the eyes themselvesabout an inch and a half under the surfaceof the ground. The tulips, hyacinth andnarcissus can go down as much as 8 to 10inches. Crocus, snowdrops, scilla and thelike, should be covered from 2 to 3 inches.See you next month.

into small balls. Place upon greased cookiesheet. Press with fork or glass dipped insugar. Bake in 350' oven for 8 to 10minutes.

ANGEL COOKIESCream together:

c. butterc shortening

1 c. powdered sugarAdd 1 egg, slightly beatenAdd in order given:

1 t. vanilla2 c. flour1 t. soda1 t. cream of tartar11 t. salt1/2 c. chopped nutsMix well and roll into balls the size of

walnuts. Dip half of top in cold water andthen dip in sugar. Place on lightly greasedcooky sheet, spacing well. Bake in hot425' oven until slightly browned.

UNBAKED COCOANUT COOKIES11/2 c. dried apricots2 c. cocoanut2,3 C. sweetened condensed milk

powdered sugarGrind the apricots, mix with cocoanut

and sweetened condensed milk. Shape intoballs and roll in powdered sugar. Let standuntil firm. Do not bake.

NO ROLL SUGAR COOKIESBeat together until creamy:

1 c. shortening11,2 c. sugar2 eggs

Add:3 c. unsifted flour2 t. cream of tartar1 t. soda

t. salt1 t. vanillaMix well and roll into small balls. Dip

in sugar mixture of 4 T. sugar and 2 t.cinnamon. Press flat and bake on slightlygreased cooky sheet. Bake about 8 to 10minutes in a 350' oven or until light goldenbrown. Let cool about 1 minute, remove

mint sticks. Put 1/2 c. vegetable shorten-ing and 1 egg yolk in mixing bowl and beatwell. Mix in one package devil's food cakemix. Blend well. Form into balls about114 inches in diameter. Place 2 inchesapart on cookie sheet slightly greased.Sprinkle after baking with powdered sugar.Bake for 10 minutes in 350° oven.

Place on greased cooky sheet, put nut halfon top. Bake 10 minutes at 325°.

1 c. butter6 T. powdered sugar

Add:2 c. sifted flour

Add:1 c. chopped pecans1 t. water1 t. vanillaRoll into small balls, place on greased

cooky sheet, bake 35 to 40 minutes in 300°oven. Let cool a few minutes then rollin powdered sugar.

Cream together:1/2 c. sugar% c. shortening

Add and beat:1 egg

Add :11/2 T. milk1 t. vanilla

Sift and Add:1 c. sifted flour1/2 t. baking powder% t. soda% t. salt

Add :% c. cut up dates% c. chopped pecansDrop dough by teaspoon one at a time

into 11/2 c. Wheaties crushed fine, then rollinto small ball, place 2 inches aparc ongreased cooky sheet. Top with candied ormaraschino cherry. Bake 10 to 12 minutesat 400°. Makes 2 to 21/2 dozen.

Cream together:2 c. brown sugar packed1/2 c. butter

Add and beat:2 eggs1 t. vanilla

Sift and add:c. unsifted flour

CANDY ORANGE SLICE COOKIESCream together:

1 c. shortening1 c. brown sugar1 c. white sugar

Add and beat well:2 beaten eggs

Sift and add:2 c. sifted flour1/2 t. salt1 t. baking powder1 t. soda

Add :2 c. oatmeal1 c. candy orange slices chopped fine1 t. vanillaRoll into small balls, press them with a

fork onto greased cooky sheet. Bake 10 to15 minutes at 375°.

Cream together:1/2 c. shortening11/2 c. sugar4 egg yolks

Beat in:2 T. milk1 t. vanilla

Sift and add:11/ c. sifted flour1/2 t. baking powder14 t. saltChill dough. Roll into small balls, then

roll in mixture of cinnamon and sugar.Place 3 inches apart on ungreased cookysheet. Bake 12 to 15 minutes at 400°, oruntil golden brown but still soft.

Following several years of drouth, theharvest, when finally in the cribs, will bemore bountiful this year. Most of our areadoesn't have a bumper crop, but we dohave nearly a normal crop and certainlylots of feed on hand. With all of the feedwe have, there will be a great temptationto raise and feed more livestock becauseof the relatively cheap feed. Such a trend,however, could bring disaster to the farm-er. We don't need any increases in pro-duction. In reality, we still need some "cutbacks" especially in hogs. We had goodhog prices late in the summer and earlyfall, only because we had fewer hogs goingto market. Farm folks must learn, as in-dustry has learned, that over productionwill inevitably result in depressed prices.The markets will only absorb a certainamount of any goods. When we producemore than the consumer requires we havelow prices - when we produce less, thenprices go up. This is a basic law of supplyand demand that farmers must always keepin mind when planning production. Lookat egg prices as a concrete example. Thisyear hatchings were down about 12 - 15percent below 1956. As a result we haverelatively high egg prices. Next spring(1958) egg prices will still be good athatching season, so everyone will be buy-ing baby chicks. Soon we will be facingover production of eggs and prices will thengo down again. The law of supply anddemand is so basic in agriculture that Iam at a complete loss to know why farm-ers in general pay so little attention to it.

We have tried government programs ofgreat variety and scope, yet none of themhave altered the consequences of the basiceconomic laws under which farmers mustoperate. The "inners and outers" are stillthe culprits. A steady flow of farm com-modities to market (just enough to meetthe demand) would always result in rela-tively good prices, but the "inners and out-ers" always upset the apple cart. Theyget in at the wrong time and they get outat the wrong time.

I notice the "old almanac" predicts avery severe winter. In fact it looks likean old fashioned winter with lots of snowand cold weather. As a matter of fact,it looks like snow for Thanksgiving and acold Christmas Day. If you aren't readyfor a hard winter, I suggest you get readyas soon as you can. You can expect higherfuel bills, higher feed consumption by yourlivestock, more overshoes and warm cloth-ing to buy, tougher road conditions andmore wear and tear on your equipment,your livestock and your disposition.

Radio will be more important to youduring a rough winter and you can dependon KMA to keep you right up to dateweather-wise and at the same time bringsome warm, friendly atmosphere to yourhome during the long winter months. Wehope this has been a good year for youand that you can truly count your blessingsas the year 1957 draws to a close.

It could be FRANKFIELD or MERRILL LANGFITT tryingout their last Spanish lesson. Senors FIELDand LANGFITT and Senorita LANGFITTare taking Spanish lessons every Mondaynight at the JUNIOR COLLEGE in Clar-inda. They are thoroughly enjoying thecourse and hope to be able to converse inSpanish by the time the course is comple-ted in 10 weeks.

You heard KMA's Homemakers BER-NICE CURRIER and FLORENCE FALKtelling you about the three of us going toLincoln Oct. 12 & 13 to attend the Heart ofAmerica Convention of American Womenin Radio and Television. Here is the waywe looked just before leaving. On myright is BERNICE and FLORENCE is onthe left. The convention was held at theCornhusker Hotel. We left a little earlyso that BERNICE could have time for avisit with her blind aunt in Lincoln, beforethe convention started. Among the prom-inent speakers were National AWRTPresident Edythe Fern Melrose of theHouse of Charm of Detroit, the Honorable

For the last four years, Pgm. Mgr.DEAN NAVEN has worn cowboy boots.He likes them because they're comfortable,But he never thought of them as being ameans of identification, until a Clarindafootball fan pulled a clever trick on him.As DEAN walked down the side of thefootball field, this young fellow pulled upDEAN's pant legs. . looked at his boots. . and said: "Yep, DEAN NAVEN is here!"

Poor little 4 year old JEFFREY, son ofdisc jockey MIKE HEUER, has had morethan his share of trouble. He recently gottwo blisters about the size of silver dollarsas a result of a burn, when his mother acci-dentally spilled a cup of hot coffee on hisside. These were only first degree burns,but a couple years ago he got second de-gree burns when hot grease spilled on hisarm. This little fellow is going to haveto learn how to do a fast "duck" when hesees things headin' his way!

Back in the days of silent movies, it wasalways a sure laugh when the comedianwould fall off a ladder and paint splashed

all over everything. Well,this actually happened inthe FRANK FIELD house-hold recently. At the time it seem-ed tragic, but soon FRANKand Jennie saw the funnyside of it when they realizedFRANK wasn't .hurt, andthey had a big laugh asthey soaked up the paint offthe cabinets, stove and icebox with paint thinner. Na-turally. .where they usedpaint thinner the wax cameoff, too, so that means

everything will have to be waxed again.It took them nearly an hour to get thepaint off! But it'll take a lot longer toget things back in tip top shape again!All because FRANK'S foot slipped!

Thru her broadcast FLORENCE FALKwas happy to be able to provide a servicefor one of her blind listeners recently. Thelistener had written wishing she could getthe unbaked cookie recipes that had ap-peared in the Guide. She needed them inbraille or typed. Florence mentioned it onthe air and immediately a Service for theBlind in Omaha volunteered to do the job.Lots of wonderful people in this world,isn't there ?

Life is mighty thrilling for 3 year oldEDDIE MAY, JR. when Daddy brings himto the seed house, and lets him ride up anddown in the elevator. He calls it the "alli-gator", but no matter what you call it,riding it really fascinates him. Somethingelse that sets EDDIE awhirl, is music. Heloves music and can't resist showing hislove for it. Recently when the familyattended a church dinner, young EDDIE'sunscheduled appearance at the programfollowing the dinner, gave everyone a goodlaugh. When the musicians started toplay and sing, EDDIE immediately got outon the floor and danced gaily around, ob-livious to the audience or anyth'ng elsegoing on around him.

Mrs. RALPH CHILDS finds life mightybusy these days. She has been doing sub-stitute teaching in the schools, workingat their new Record Shop in the after-noons, and keeping house for a family ofsix. Often times, RALPH helps out by get-ting lunch for the family at noon.

Can you top these "slips of the tongue" ?KMA announcer MERL DOUGLAS tellingabout an electric griddle tobe given away, but insteadof saying "griddle" he saidthe oil station was givingaway an electric "girdle".Tsh. .tsh, DOUG. .what anunusual prize! While his mother was rest-ing one day, 3 year oldJeffrey, son of anouncerMIKE HEUER decided hewould clean out the fishbowl. He had seen daddy doit, and it looked easy. So heslipped quietly into the kit-chen with the fish bowl con-taining his brother Tommy'stwo guppies, and started to Mrs. May used this mode of transportation while vaca-work. Upon hearing a noise, tioning in the Far East.

his mother got up and investigated. Thereon the floor was JEFFREY busily wipingup the spilled water as he proudly exclaim-ed: "See Momie, I cleaned out the fishbowl!" He didn't need to tell her, becauseall over the floor were snails, weeds, shellsand sand. .but NO guppies! Where theywent. .nobody knows, but the HEUERShope the next time the baby sitter givesTOMMY a gift. . she will give him goldfish instead of guppies. They can disap-pear too easily!

To all of our KMA and May SeedCompany visitors this summer, we want tosay "Thanks for coming." We enjoyed theprivilege of entertaining you and takingyou on tour. Records show there were1,349 visitors in 37 days. We think that'sa mighty fine record and hope you and allyour friends come see us often.

TOMMY BURNS of KMA, has had thehonor of being chosen to play the leadingrole in the first production presented bythe Southwest Iowa Theater group. Co-starred will be Mrs. Maribelle Read ofShenandoah. The play "Kind Lady" willbe presented in November, and directed byMonty Montrose, a Shenandoahan who hasbeen directing plays in the east.

Recognize the American in the rickshaw?It's Mrs. GERTRUDE MAY and the pic-ture was taken out in front of the Penin-sula Hotel in Hong Kong, while Mrs. MAYwas taking a world tour this summer. Thelady pulling the rickshaw and wearing theChinese hat is Mrs. Ethel Goettsche of Sar-asota, Florida, a member of the tour group.On Page 2 you'll find the last of our seriesof interesting letters from Mrs. May, tell-ing of her round the world trip which I'msure we've all enjoyed. A Letter From The Farmer's WifeGreetings from the Farm this November! !

Such a change in seasons since my lastletter. We had such a warm summer attimes but the fall rains gave us a goodmoist soil condition before winter sets in.The trees have never been lovelier thanthey were this fall. Lovely in yellows, reds,greens with the black of rain wet trunksshowing through. Do hope you found timeto just scuffle through the leaves andenjoy the nice fall days.

Since September, school almost throughwith the second six weeks of work, every-one busy. Karen Ann, a freshman is busyand now is out for girls basketball. Bruce,our seventh grader played football with theJunior High boys. He played halfbackwhen called upon. Now he, too, is out forJr. High basketball. Our town is veryfootball and sports minded and gives muchsupport to all school activities. A big crowdat the annual homecoming game, with itsQueen festivities. The team came throughwith a surprise victory to everyone's de-light.

The farmer has had a fairly busy fall,the past few weeks mainly interested inharvesting the corn crop. In places verygood returns and others not so good. Wehad no milo or soy beans this year, a ratherwet fall for harvesting those crops.

The last two months have been busy oneson the farm. There has been so muchextra work come up both inside and out.In early October it was my privilege tochairman a large traditional Swedish Smor-gasbord for the Essex Band Parents. Theyserved the annual Page County FarmBureau membership meeting. Everythingworked out so well. We served some forty-eight different kinds of Swedish foods.Everyone enjoyed it and we served 537through the lines in one hour and twentyminutes. In our school gymnasium we hadplenty of seating space and lots of lightto show up the beautiful food. A lot ofwork but much fun and good experience,besides clearing about $235 for our bandfund.

This is the time of the year for manymoney making activities, bazaars, suppers,God's Acre Sales, harvest festivals and soon. Your letters telling about these havebeen very interesting and shared withothers on The Farmer's Wife program.

Among the many letters lately to thefarm have been several from KMA Guidereaders outside the KMA listening area.So glad to hear from you and answer yourrequests. Sorry you can't be listening butthen the Guide comes to you as a lettereach month from us. The KMA Guidemakes an excellent Christmas gift to any-one on your list.

The cooky recipes on the two pages thismonth are outstanding. Next month we'llhave Christmas cooky recipes. Every

month the KMA Guide has four pages ofrecipes besides all the other features.

The second week -end in October foundBernice Currier and I with Doris Murphyin her beautiful new car journeying toLincoln, Nebraska. We attended theseventh annual meeting of The Heart ofAmerica Chapter of American Women inRadio and Television. Here we met, visit-ed with and learned from many others inthis field of communications. The Heartof America Chapter means a great deal tothose of us from KMA for it was in a meet-ing in Shenandoah (at Doris' home, Ber-nice was there too) that this organizationnow national in scope was begun. DorisMurphy was the first Chapter president.At the convention many details of the na-tional convention to be held in San Francisoin April 1958 were brought to our attention.Doris was being constantly sought out forideas and help. We are very proud of ourwomen's director and her part in an organ-ization now numbering 1600 members.

The convention in Lincoln was very fine,excellent speakers, promotion ideas, lovelybreakfast, luncheons, dinners and a ban-quet. So proud of my sponsors, that sharedin these nice gestures of hospitality. TheCornhusker gals from Lincoln and outstatedid themselves quite proud, in programarrangements, fashion and millinery shows,gifts, everything that contributed to severaldays of intensive good work.

We were again alerted to the definiteneed for Civil Defense work in this greatMiddle West. We are a bit complacentabout Civil Defense, thinking oh that's forthe others, but it isn't, it is for you andfor me to be so minded.

My stay in Lincoln was wonderful, beingwaited on, no meals, to prepare, no dishesto wash, no beds to make, just enjoy my-self and I did, so well, in fact, part of myvoice came back. Our drive home wasbeautiful - going to Lincoln on Friday,Doris drove in rain but coming back onSunday afternoon we could fully enjoynature's gorgeous colorings; other peoplethought so, too, for there was a good dealof traffic. We stopped and enjoyed thebeautiful Kimmel Orchard along the way.My family enjoyed having me back andhearing about other radio people we arepleased to have as our friends from severalstates.

Getting back home and again in theharness first tackled mail and as of nowam all caught up with letter answering.Have tested several Christmas recipes,recipes for shipping here, there and every-where. Have all back copy work caughtup and almost all of the filing. A lot ofthat to do always.

Wheth-er you are having a 22 pound turkey orone of the new midgets, the 6 or 7 pound,or the popular roast duck, or ham or pork,enjoy yourself. Maybe these menu sugges-tions will find a place on your table. Amenu and then some random recipes.

BUTTERFLAKE ROLLSCombine :

1 c. hot water1/4 c. sugar1 t. salt2 T. butterCool to lukewarm and add 1 cake of

yeast which has been dissolved in 2 T.lukewarm water. Add 1 well beaten eggand % c. melted butter. Add 1 c. flourand beat smooth. Add just enough of 3c. flour to make a dough quite soft. Cover.Let rise for one hour. Knead well withthe heel of the hands folding dough overand over. Roll with warmed rolling pininto rectangle about 1% inch thick. Cut intostrips about 11/2 inches wide. Stack strips5 to 7 high. Cut into 2 inch squares. Placeon end in greased warm muffin pans. Letrise for 45 minutes, covered and out ofdrafts. Bake in 425° oven about 15 min-utes. Makes one dozen.

CRANBERRY SALAD1 c. ground raw cranberries1 c. ground unpared apples1 c. sugar1 package lemon gelatin1 c. hot water1 c. pineapple sirup1/2 c. seeded tokay grape halves74 c. broken English walnut meatsPineapple slicesCombine cranberries, apples and sugar.

Dissolve gelatin in hot water. Add sirup,chill until partially set. Add cranberry -apple mixture, grape halves and nutmeats.Pour into individual molds. Chill untilfirm. Unmold on pineapple slices on crisplettuce.

APPLE -RAISIN -NUT PIE1 c. seedless raisins1 c. boiling water1 T. flour2, c. sugar2 c. apples, pared, thinly sliced1/2 c. chopped nuts2 t. grated lemon rind3 T. lemon juicePie pastry for double crust pieCook raisins, covered, in the 1 c. of water

for about 5 minutes. Mix flour and sugar;add and cook over low heat, stirring untilthick. Boil for 1 minute. Remove fromheat; add other ingredients. Pour fillinginto pastry lined 9 inch pie pan. Roll topcrust and place over filling. Seal by flut-ing edges. Cut slits or design in center toallow steam to escape. Bake in 425° oven(hot) for 30 to 40 minutes or until nicelybrowned.

* * * *CHOCOLATE BROWNIES PIE

2 squares unsweetened chocolate (2 oz.)2 T. butter3 large eggs1/2 c. sugar% c. dark corn sirup% c. pecan halves (other nuts may be

used)Line 8 inch pan with pastry. Melt choco-

late and butter over hot water or in heavypan over low heat. Remove from heat.Beat thoroughly the eggs, chocolate mix-ture and corn sirup. Add pecans and pourfilling into pastry lined pan. Bake in 375°oven for 40 to 50 minutes or until fillinghas set. This may be served slightly warmor cold. Decorate with fluted whippedcream or top with ice cream.

* * * *HONEY PUMPKIN PIE

% c. strained honey% c. nonfat dry milk solids1/2 t. salt1/2 t. cinnamon1/2 t. mace1/2 t. ginger1/4 t. cloves11/2 c. cooked pumpkin2 eggs, well beaten11/2 c. water2 T. melted butterMix dry ingredients well to prevent

streaking. Add other ingredients, mixingthoroughly. Turn into unbaked pastryshell (9"). Bake in 425° oven for 15 min-utes. Reduce heat to 350° and bake for40 minutes longer.Topping for Honey Pumpkin PieBlend together:

1/2 c. chopped nuts1/2 c. brown sugar, firmly packed% c. butter or margarineSpread on hot pie as it comes from the

oven.

FOIL WRAPPED ROAST TURKEYTie drumsticks to tail or tuck them under

the layer of skin at tail left for that pur-pose. Press wings flat to body and turnwing tips back and under the turkey's back.Use heavy aluminum foil. Place turkey incenter of sheet of foil. Breast up. Foilshould extend 5 or 6 inches beyond tail andneck ends, and wide enuf to make a gener-ous drug store fold loosely around turkeyfrom top to tail ends. Bring the side piecesup over turkey, fold over with drug storefold and press down lightly to turkey. Foldthe end pieces up high enuf to prevent drip-pings from leaking into pan. Place tur-key breast side up in roasting pan or broilerpan. Turkey should be salted inside andsprinkled with salt over breast beforewrapping. Roast at 400° for 31/4 hours for16 lb. bird. Plan to have turkey roasted atleast 1/2 hour before time to serve.

CELERY STUFFING2 qts. dry bread cubes1/2 c. chopped onion2 t. salt1/2 t. pepper1/2 t. poultry seasoningsage to taste (take it easy)2/3 c. butter or margarinechicken broth to moisten3 c. finely chopped celeryMix all together lightly and put in

greased casserole. Bake, covered untilcelery is done at 375°. Then uncover andbrown on top.

CHEESED ONIONS18 to 20 medium onions1/3 c. salad oil3 T. flour11/2 c. milk1 c. shredded cheddar cheesePeel onions and cook in large amount

of boiling salted water until tender, then

drain. Blend salad oil and flour, stir inmilk and cook slowly stirring constantlyuntil thick. Add cheese and stir untilmelted. Add onions, put in lightly greasedcasserole and heat in 375° oven until lightlybrowned. Makes 6 to 8 servings.

CRANBERRY SHERBET2 c. jellied cranberry sauce3 T. sugar1/3 c. orange juice2 t. grated lemon peelCombine all in mixer bowl and beat un-

til smooth and sugar is completely dissol-ved. Pour into refrigerator tray and freezeuntil partially frozen. Remove to chilledbowl and beat till smooth. Beat 2 eggwhites until stiff, fold into cranberry mix-ture, return to tray and freeze until firm.Makes 5 to 6 servings. Wonderful servedwith the main course.

A-1 c. sugar3 well beaten eggs

B-1/4 c. sifted flour1 t. baking powder1/4 t. salt

C-1 c. fine graham cracker crumbs1 c. chopped pitted dates1 c. broken pecans

Combine A gradually and beat till thickand light. Sift B and fold into A. Fold inC. Turn into greased 8 x 8 x 2 inch pan.Bake 45 to 50 minutes at 350°. Cut insquares and serve warm with whippedcream and a pecan half on each. Makes 6servings. For smaller servings make 9squares.

FROSTY FRUIT SQUARESA-2 T. sugar

1 T. flour1/2 c. honey

B-1/3 c. lemon juice1 beaten egg

C-2 c. fruit cocktail drained1 c. banana slices1/3 c. mandarin oranges1/4 c. maraschino cherries, cut up

D-1 c. heavy cream whippedCombine A in saucepan, stir constantly

bring to boiling over low heat and cook 1minute. Gradually combine B then stira little of A into B, then combine the twoand bring just to boiling, stirring con-stantly. Remove from heat, cool, stir in C.Fold in D. Pour into refrigerator tray andfreeze firm. Cut in squares and garnishwith sections of mandarin orange and amaraschino cherry. Makes 6 to 8 servings.

Saturday a.m.after confirming my plane reservation, Iwalked over to the Opera House, down theAvenue to the Hotel Louvre where I oncestayed, and on to the Louvre Art Galleryfor a brief glimpse of a few of the world'smasterpieces. In the p.m. we did a sight-seeing tour of historical Paris. In the even-ing I attended Grand Opera (Le Chevalierde la Ross). My hotel supposed to be a5 minute walk from the Opera House butat midnight it seemed an hour as I turnedonto the wrong street.

My last travel letter on my trip.September 18th I left the Reddy's on H.

M. S. Queen Elizabeth and I returned toLondon. I had decided just how I wishedto spend the next two weeks before I wouldsail. I spent the next two days sightsee-ing around London and planning withCook's Tour office for my hotel reserva-tions and transportation. I especially en-joyed the 82 year old guide we had thruWestminster Abbey. I think he lovednearly every stone and window in it andhe made the time we spent there a mostenjoyable and instructive afternoon. Thisis where the coronations and royal wed-dings are held and the tombs or tabletshonoring the great cultural leaders, states-men and the Tomb of the Unknownof England are found there. Very manyof the conducted tours for the tourists wereover for the season (too late in September)so I flew to Copenhagen, Denmark Satur-day a.m.

I took a sight-seeing trip by bus in thep. m. Sunday I attended church, walkedthru a lovely park and went to the Thor-waldsen Museum. Trivoli, the amusementpark, was closed. Monday I took a longdays trip to Malmo and Lund, Sweden. Iwas so impressed by the contour of theland which seemed so much like our PageCounty that I decided that must have in-fluenced many of the Swedish people livingat Essex and our vicinity to settle overhere. Both Denmark and Sweden seemedvery prosperous, immaculately clean, thefood delicious, the people very friendy andmost of them spoke English.

Thousands of them were riding bicycleswhile hundreds of bicycles were parked onthe squares or along the streets.

Tuesday P. M. I flew back to London andthe next day I enjoyed a most interestingconducted tour of Canterbury. Canter-bury is one of the most picturesque citiesin England dating from Roman times andpossesses one of the most magnificentcathedrals of the many in England. Ispent Thursday and Friday on a 2 dayconducted motor coach trip passing Wind-sor and Warwick castles, had lunch atStratford on Avon, near Shakespeare's

birthplace. All of that country is beautifulas well as historical. We stayed overnightat Chester, a delightful city. The nextday the drive was beautiful passing thruthe English lake section and on into beaut-iful Scotland to Edinburgh.

Saturday Mary Murray, a friend wholived near, spent the day with me. Weshopped about an hour, ate lunch in a veryattractive Cafe' Royal, then proceeded bytrain to Dunfermline, the town whereAndrew Carnegie was born. We spentthe p. m. going thru his birthplace home,the interesting museum added to the homeand had tea in the beautiful park pavilionwhich he had purchased and presented tothe city. On Sunday I took a long motorcoach trip to Loch Lomond and thru thebeautiful Trossach country which is one ofthe loveliest countries I have ever visited.The following day I enjoyed the trip on anEnglish train to London where I had twomore days to enjoy the city. I have alwaysloved England and Scotland, the friendli-ness of the people and the interesting shopsand many historical points of interest. Ofcourse, it seems so good to have Englishspoken all of the time. I took a 7:10 p.m.train October 2nd for Southampton andboarded H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth which wasto sail at 7:00 a.m, the next a.m. TheQueen Elizabeth is certainly a beautifullarge ship. There were 2200 passengerswith a crew of 1300. We were told theyserved about 10,000 meals a day (excellentfood and huge menus to order from). Wehad rather a cold but calm voyage anddocked in New York at 4:45 a.m. on Oct-ober 8th.

I was disappointed but too sleepy to beup by 3:30 a.m. to see the New York sky-line and the Statue of Liberty. Passingthru customs wasn't very difficult. Acousin Mrs. Bob Savidge with her twoboys and some friends soon came for me.After checking into the hotel and eatinglunch we walked over to the Empire StateBuilding and went up to the top. Later Iwent home with Phyllis to Haddonfield,N. J. returning to New York the next even-ing. I had a day and a half yet in NewYork before going to Boston to visit Dr.Ella Murphy over the weekend. We spentthe two days doing two bus tours to seethe fall coloring, one to Albany, N. Y., theother one to New Hampshire and Vermont.The country was lovely and the coloringso vivid against the beautiful green pines.The following afternoon I took the trainfor Chicago and arrived in Red Oak at10:30 p.m. October 15th, where my daugh-ter Frances Rankin, Edward and EleanorMay and my cousin Edna Buntz met me,just 5 months and 10 days after I hadtaken that same train on May 5th. I hada wonderful trip but I was happy andthankful to be returning home.

Betty Rankin Crowned Homecoming Queen

Miss Betty Jane Rankin, pretty brunette daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse D.Rankin (Frances May) was crowned Queen of Homecoming at ShenandoahHigh School during October, preceding the annual classic between Shenandoahand Clarinda High Schools, which ended in a 13-13 tie. Betty Jane was chosenby the members of the football team for her congeniality, popularity, poiseand beauty, and is shown being crowned by "S" Club president Gene Craig.
