From the President
I find myself running at rather unusual times lately. Between
adjusting to a new full time work schedule, the beginning of
cross country season, kids’ activities and a number of meetings
and other commitments, sometimes I head out the door at 5:30
am to squeeze in a 5-mile sunrise run or crank out a set of
Yassos. While I often find myself pounding the pavement in the
dark, the familiarity of running the 2 ½ mile loop through my
neighborhood has become almost automatic, the proximity of
each turn and curve engrained in my memory as I run on
autopilot.
Other days, I will begin a long run in the evening, finishing in
the dark as the sun sets and dusk transforms to night.
Wednesdays I will sometimes leave directly from work and head
to the Portage YMCA group run, timing the end of my runs to
finish around the same time as my daughter’s Hapkido class
held at the same location. During the week, for workouts where
I don’t have timed intervals scheduled, I will run with my Cross
Country team, banking some mileage on soft grassy terrain.
One of the greatest advantages of being a runner is the
portability and flexibility the sport affords. While life is full of
changes outside our control that require continuous adaptation,
running can wrap around the rest of your life as circumstances
change. Injury aside, it is something we can for the most part
control in an otherwise changing world.
My situation is not unique; in a day and age where we wear
many different hats and manage multiple priorities within the
boundaries of each 24 hour day, most of us have had to find
creative ways to keep ourselves running. Several KAR members
have shared some of their proven tips to fit their runs into a full
schedule.
KAR member and marathoner Sherri Watts will run at 5:00am.
“The craziest “running” thing I do is to run 12 milers and get to
work by 8:00am,” reported Sherri.
Megan James, a long time KAR Member, top tri-athlete and
mother of two has a whole list of tricks to fitting in her runs:
Put the kids in the jog stroller and:
1) Run to the park
2) Run to the store to do an errand or two

3) Run to the farmers market
4) Pick them up from or take them to daycare
“I also bike or run to my in-laws often. I get our stuff all packed
up and then Fred (husband) takes the kids in the car to my in-
laws while I run or bike out there. “ “And of course running on
our home treadmill at 5am many mornings,” added Megan.
KAR Member and Safari Team Leader Darrell Harden has
highly structured approach to managing his running. “At the
beginning of any training program with a set schedule, I sit
down with my calendar and "schedule" my training. “ “I book
appointments for my training.” “It's worked rather well this
year -- when I have to cancel a run appointment, I reschedule
it.” “I recognize that it's okay to miss the occasional short run,
too -- doubling up workouts can be tough on the body.”
Kalamazoo SHufflers leader Dan Sarkipato has these tips,
”Blend running in with another activity you are already doing
like... Run to or from work; run to or from one of your kids
games or activities or run while you are hanging out at some
activity or game that your kids have; take dry clothes and
deodorant along if you can't shower...”
While balancing the demands of life with running can be a
challenge, there are ways to fit it in to just about any schedule
with a little creativity.
