Introduction
We feel God’s presence among us with every note we play or sing, with every phrase we shape, with every piece that that allows us to express what is in our hearts. ” – JONATHAN KOHRS
“
The world is a very different place than it was just one year ago. In the United States alone, the civil unrest, damaging forest fires and political tension would be enough to make the past year stand out against what many remember as less fraught times. That, of course, is not to mention COVID-19.
The coronavirus and its repercussions have affected us in a wide variety of ways—physically, emotionally, economically, spiritually. Each of us has felt these effects to different degrees. You may have lost a family member to COVID, while most others have not. You may have lost a job, while some others are working overtime to meet some new demand. You may be struggling to face each new day, while others seem oblivious to the weight that is so real to you.
Given all of that, it is easy to wonder, where is God in all of this? Despite all of that—or rather because of all of that—I am convinced that during this semester at Concordia University Chicago, God’s presence has been felt more strongly than it was in what we now think of as “pre-COVID” times. What is more, I believe that most, if not every student who is about to share their substantial God-given talents and abilities with you would concur. Because of all the unsettling happenings and circumstances around us—and because of the long fast from making music together—we are more thankful than ever before for God’s gift of music to us, for the opportunity to make music together again and to share the Gospel of Christ with you through that music. We feel God’s presence among us with every note we play or sing, with every phrase we shape, with every piece that that allows us to express what is in our hearts.
Yes, COVID-19 has brought about challenges and hardships which are very real and that call for the support of family, friends, neighbors, the government, the Church. They should not be diminished. But some good has come about because of the virus. One example is that this concert may reach an even wider audience than our previous livestreamed concerts have. If you are one of those witnessing a CUC concert for the first time—or the first time in quite some time—welcome! We are pleased that the gifts of our Creator and Redeemer are reaching you, to bring about some good in your world!
We hope you enjoy the concert.

ConductorFrom the
On behalf of The Kapelle, thank you for sharing this evening with us. Our concert program is in response to the time between the festival of All Saints and the end of the Church year. We now get to pause and sing, turning our hearts and minds toward our eventual heavenly home: to be with Christ in that beautiful city on that great and glorious day. We are grateful for this opportunity to sing for you.
The last time the Kapelle performed a tour concert, our nation was at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and in a state of emergency. We were sent home early with no idea as to how the weeks ahead would unfold. There was a sadness that we couldn’t perform our Spring 2020 home concert in front of the campus community. Sharing our program message and honoring the seniors who were to perform their last home concert was not possible. I would like to acknowledge last year’s seniors who helped make last year quite remarkable and thank them for their contributions to Kapelle’s successes: Abigail Deddens, Cindy Gomez, David Hein, Abigail Schaffer, Josiah Schultz, Hannah Sivia and Margaret Warner.
Returning to campus back in August was an adjustment to the “new normal.” We had to get back into shape—singing through masks, rehearsing and performing 10 feet apart, not holding hands while singing Müde bin ich, taking breaks every 30 minutes to clear the air in the room, etc. (Wait—NOT holding hands while singing Müde?!?) We had to adapt! Yet we are grateful to be together again, and to sing as safely as possible.
A word of gratitude needs to be expressed to the administration for enabling campus groups to return this semester, which allowed our performing ensembles to make music to the glory of God. The Kapelle’s program is adapted to accommodate the safety of the students in performance and being mindful of a screen-weary audience.
The music represents a variety of styles that range from Martin Luther’s only extant choral motet to spirituals of the current day. To add a more personal touch to this concert, we will be reading the names of Concordia-Chicago’s almuni, faculty and staff who have passed away in the past year during a section of music in Edwin Fissinger’s In paradisum.
Thank you for attending remotely. I pray that this program will be a blessing to you. I sincerely hope that we will share the musical moment in the same room together again very soon!
In Christ,

Non moriar, sed vivam
Non moriar, sed vivam, et narrabo opera Domini. I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord.
– Psalm 118:17 (KJV)
What Are These That Are Arrayed in White Robes?
Hallelujah!
What are these that are arrayed in white robes, and whence came they?
These are they that came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
Hallelujah!
Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple.
They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.
For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.
– Revelation 7: 13-17 (KJV, adapted by John Stainer)
O Taste and See
O taste and see how gracious the Lord is. Blessed is the man that trusteth in Him.
– Psalm 34:8 (KJV)
Blessed Are the Dead Who Die in the Lord
And I heard a voice from heaven saying,
“Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord henceforth.”
“Blessed indeed,” says the Spirit,
“that they may rest from their labors,
for their deeds follow them!”
– Revelation 14:13, RSV

In paradisum
In paradisum deducant te Angeli: May the angels lead you into paradise;
in tuo adventu suscipiant te Martyres, May the Martyrs welcome you upon your arrival,
et perducant te in civitatem sanctam Jerusalem. and lead you into the holy city of Jerusalem.
Chorus Angelorum te suscipiat, May a choir of angels welcome you,
et cum Lazaro quondam paupere and, with poor Lazarus of old,
aeternam habeas requiem. may you have eternal rest.
– Requiem text, tr. Ron Jeffers
Müde bin ich, geh zur Ruh
Müde bin ich, geh zur Ruh I am tired and want to rest,
Schließe meine Äuglein zu: So close my little eyes.
Vater, laß die Augen Dein Father, let your eyes
Über meinem Bette sein. Always be over my bed.
Hab ich unrecht heut’ getan Whatever wrong I have done today
Sieh es, lieber Gott, nicht an. Do not hold me, God, to them.
Deine Gnad’ und Christi Blut Your grace and Christ’s blood
Macht ja allen Schaden gut. Makes all harm good.
Now the light has gone away;
Father, listen while I pray.
Asking Thee to watch and keep
And to send me quiet sleep.
Jesus, Savior, wash away
All that has been wrong today.
Help me every day to be
Good and gentle, more like Thee.
