THE KARL N. LLEWELLYN PAPERS:

A SUPPLEMENTARY GUIDE TO THE COLLECTION COMPILED AND WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY

SHERI H. LEWIS THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO

D'ANGELO LAW LIBRARY 1994

INTRODUCTION

This supplementary guide is the product of a several-month

long project involving this collection. Two primary tasks were

ongoing during the project. The first task was to perform

remedial preservation work on deteriorating or "at risk" portions

of the collection. The second task, and the one which led to the

publication of this supplementary guide, was to organize, describe

and provide access to those materials added to the collection

since the publication of the original guide. As an extension of

this task, additional access points have been created for three

sections of the original guide: A. Published Works; I. American

Indians and "Primitive" Law; and X. Confidential.

The result before you is a supplementary guide with two very

distinct parts. The first part gives a further delineation of the

contents of a section (or subsection) of the original collection

of the papers. This portion is labeled "Supplement Guide." As

suggested above, this part of the supplementary guide covers

selected portions of sections A., I. and X. only.

The second part of this work is a guide to the addendum, or

those items added to the collection since it was originally

organized. This portion is labelled "Addendum Guide." The

addendum is subdivided further into two sections. Addendum AA

consist of all original items added to the papers since 1970.

Addendum BB is a collection of archival copies of portions of The

ii

Emma Corstvet Papers at the Bryn Mawr Library.

A comment as to the organization of Addendum AA is

appropriate. In an effort to better serve the researcher,

Addendum AA was arranged to parallel the organization of the

original collection. Thus, items in Addendum AA are labelled with

the same alphabetic (and sometimes numeric) designation as the

corresponding items in the original collection, but preceded by

AA. Accordingly, materials concerning the Uniform Commercial

Code, which are in section J. of the original collection, are in

section AA. J. in Addendum AA. This organization should allow

cross-referencing from the original guide to the supplementary

guide to occur with ease.

This supplementary guide to the Karl N. Llewellyn Papers

would not have been completed without support from the staff at

the D'Angelo Law Library. Special thanks are due to the following

for their invaluable assistance and guidance throughout the

project and in the preparation of this guide: Rebecca S. Bealer,

Charles J. Ten Brink and Judith Wright.
