Principal’s Message
Given that we have been planning this Thursday’s school Christmas Carols since the beginning of the year, it is exciting that they have finally arrived! As of today, the weather forecast is not super (we are thinking positive thoughts), but due to the amount of organisation and the outside service providers involved, we will not be postponing. Carols is going ahead rain, hail or shine and we would really appreciate you coming along to support the students for this community event.
The Key Things You Need to Know:
Each class will perform one Christmas carol on the stage (brought in especially for this event)
The evening will get under way at 5pm with class stalls, rides, activities for the students and a BBQ; however
families are free to arrive at whatever time suits you
Although all of the teachers will be in attendance, children must be accompanied at all times by their
parents/carers
Children are not permitted to enter the school’s grounds unaccompanied by an adult
The Carols themselves won’t commence until 7:30pm to allow plenty of time for working parents to
participate. Please try to arrive no later than 7:15pm
We will proceed rain, hail or shine (see below)
Families are encouraged to bring either camping chairs, a picnic rug or tarp to sit on. There will be a
designated area near the front of the stage for picnic rugs/tarps. Camping chairs will be permitted beyond
that area
Please note that alcohol is not permitted on school grounds and it would be advisable to bring some form
of mosquito repellent
There will also be performances by our preschool students, parents, ukulele, choir and teachers
Glow sticks will be available for sale on the night
Feel free to get into the spirit by wearing Christmas attire if you wish!
We will make a decision about how best to proceed based on the prevailing weather conditions on Thursday (check the app for updates). If there is only light drizzle and no threat of lightning, we will proceed outdoors. If there is heavier rain or the imminent threat of lightning, we will proceed in the hall and cola with the students waiting to perform in their classrooms; supervised by teachers. Hopefully, all will be well and we can go ahead outdoors, but we’d appreciate your patience and flexibility if the conditions are changeable. Looking forward to seeing you all on Thursday. School banking
There will be no school banking this Friday, however if you have tokens to
redeem, please send them in before this FRIDAY (5th Dec) and let the office
staff know which rewards you would like to claim. Mrs McPherson will do her
best to have them back to you in time for the final banking day of 2014, which
is Friday 12th December.
Water Catchers
Last Friday night, a special screening was held at Tower Cinemas Newcastle for
the students (and their families) involved in the Water catchers project.
Congratulations to Floraville Public School who took out first prize for their
water saving video. Well done to all of our students that were involved in the
unique opportunity and special thanks to Mrs Leggett and Mrs Grant for
making it happen.
Presentation Day
Next Tuesday, we will be hosting our annual Presentation Day assembly. The
assembly will start in the hall at 9:30 and conclude at approximately 11:00am.
Parents are invited to join us as we celebrate the students’ achievements in
2014. Classroom teachers will be presenting 5 class awards (6 for composite
classes). The awards will include: Academic Achievement, Citizenship, Most
Improved and two others will be Teacher’s Choice. There will also be a number
of special whole-school awards and we will announce both the School and
House Captains for 2015. The assembly will conclude with a short video
presentation with highlights from our year. Students must wear full school
uniform (new uniform where possible, Year 6 may wear their special Yr 6
shirts). Please join us if you can.
Parent Helpers and Volunteers Morning Tea
In 2014, as in previous years, our school has been very fortunate to have the
valued assistance of many parent helpers and volunteers. To say thank you for
your assistance, the staff would like to put on and cater for, a special morning
tea. It will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday 10th December in the school
library. Invitations should come home via the students this week. If you have
volunteered or helped in our school this year, in ANY capacity, we would be
delighted if you could join us for this special morning tea. To those of you who
have helped or volunteered this year, but are unable to make it for this
morning tea – we thank you sincerely for your kind and generous assistance.
Congratulations Students of the Week!

Cardiff High School Year 7 Orientation The Cardiff High Orientation Day for Year 6 students going into Year 7 is on tomorrow (3rd Dec) from 9:15am to 12:30pm. Please ensure your child arrives at CHS by 9am, students are to meet Miss Glawson at the CHS hall to have their name marked off on arrival. Students will walk back to school with Miss Glawson at the conclusion of the day. K-2 Swimming This week is the last week for the K-2 swimming program. Thank you parents for your wonderful support of this program and for making sure that all of the important items were packed in bags each Friday! Over the course of the 9 week program, the teachers have noticed a clear improvement in the students’ swimming skills – not to mention their general organisation and responsibility towards their belongings. No doubt the students are better prepared for swimming activities over the coming Summer months. Thank you to all K-2 teachers for their support of the students through this program. Special thanks also go to Mrs Wynter for coordinating and organising this program. As part of the K-2 swimming program, this Friday, students will be assessed on their water safety skills, which they have been practicing over the past several weeks of lessons. The swimming instructors have asked that students bring with them a set of clothes that they can wear for the assessment – yes they will be getting wet, so a good plastic bag will be needed to take them home. Class Party Days Parents are reminded to return permission notes and payment for the end of year class party day activities. These are due this Friday the 5th December. Students, who have not paid and returned permission notes, will not be eligible to participate. Mosquito Alert With the recent weather we have experienced, the teachers have again noticed an increase in the number of mosquitoes in the playground at school. Parents are encouraged to pack (and label) a roll-on insect repellent in your child’s bag for school. Students may use roll-on repellents at school to reduce the likelihood of being stung. Please note that aerosol forms of repellent are NOT permitted at school. You may also like to pack some for Carols on Thursday.

Aboriginal Mural If you have visited our school recently you may have noticed the transformation of the Aboriginal mural near the basketball court. This mural was created by our Aboriginal students with the guidance and support of Ashley Williams a local Aboriginal artist. The next time you visit our school, please take a few moments to take a peep as it looks fantastic and contains a number of pictures and symbols representative of our area. We thank the Aboriginal students for their excellent work and also Ashley, for maximising the input that our students could have and for such a great finished product. Great job Things to look out for:
Blue – represents Lake Macquarie
Yellow – represents the sand
Green – represents Mt Sugarloaf (a significant local place)
Black – the sky
Purple – the Dreamtime
Animals – ones that are found in the local area
Rainbow Serpent – the students wanted this included in their design
Handprints – created using the hands of all of our Aboriginal students

Year 6 – The Night of The Notables Last Thursday saw some very significant Australians visit our very own, Cardiff South Public school. Our class held a very successful Day/Night of the Notables which showcased some great Aussie icons. It all started when we were asked to research a significant Australian that we were interested in and make an information booth to showcase their life and the contributions that they made to Australian society. We worked extremely hard on this project, but because it was fun it didn’t feel like work and we loved it. We had to dress like our chosen icon and take on their character, whilst visitors enjoyed our very creative displays, amazing props, interactive activities, quality oral presentations and the opportunity to ask lots of questions. Every class from K-5 visited the notables during the day and learned a lot more about these notable Aussies. The visiting students particularly liked trying to lift the weight of Pharlap’s heart and playing a horse race game, Victor Chang’s model heart, Eddie Mabo’s pile of dirt, Simpsons army gear, Ned Kelly’s helmet and guns, Bradman’s replica bat and framed photos, having a few rounds with Lionel Rose, smelling Dick Smiths’s Ozemite, wearing Sister Bullwinkle’s nursing cap, viewing Daisy Bate’s welfare photos, collecting Steve Irwins handouts and watching his video, touching Cathy Freeman’s medals, trying Fiona Woods ‘spray on skin’ and stethoscope, patting Hoge’s crocodile, holding Adam Goodes’ football, and of course Kylie Minogue’s ‘sparkling’ singing routine ♫♫♫! The evening was set aside for our parents and family members. We were excited that they could join in the fun and see what amazing booths we had created at school. We think our parents were pretty impressed with what we did. Would you believe around one hundred people came? First of all they watched a slideshow as we (the notables) were introduced. Everyone clapped and cheered. The parents then leisurely moved around the hall from booth to booth, listening to our presentations in character. It was really nice how the parents were interested in all of our booths and saw everyone’s hard work. They listened to everything we said and asked lots of questions. When we had a chance we enjoyed lamingtons, Anzacs and Jatz with Ozemite. Hmmm...we are not sure if Dick Smith got it right with OzeMite! Other things of interest from the night were: We found out that Danika’s grandfather went to school with Dick Smith and Cassie’s grandfather had been operated on by Victor Chang! We had a great night and it will be one we will remember! Thank you to everyone for sharing this with us 6G
