Keys to Success For Third Grade Assessment
Informal and Formal Assessment
There are two types of assessments that will be used to determine student growth in the classroom. The first is informal; this type of assessment is based on my observations of students during work time and class discussions. I use informal assessment so that I can adjust my lessons as necessary in order to meet your child’s needs. This is a short-term kind of assessment, and your child will not be given grades. The other type of assessment is called formal assessment. Tests, projects, and long-term assignments fall into this category. I use these assessments in order to determine how much information your child has absorbed in a unit. These tests, projects, and assignments are often given at the end of the units to show what students have learned over time. Formal assessments will be given grades that will go toward your child’s report card at the end of the quarter. Combined, these two forms of assessment will give me both sort and long-term ideas of how much your student is learning and growing in
relation
Why Assess? We want your child to succeed!
Welcome to our third grade classroom! I am looking forward to learning and growing with your child this year! Your child’s education is very important to me and I will be implementing many forms of assessment in the classroom. Assessment will help monitor your child’s growth as well as guide my instruction. I will be using a variety of informal and formal assessment throughout the year. To ensure your child’s educational success, I ask for your help at home. You will be kept aware of any upcoming assessments and I will send home study tools at least two days before any formal assessment. This newsletter contains the key to your child’s success in our classroom. If you ever have any questions about your child’s growth and success in our classroom please feel free to contact me

Language Arts Language arts is a key component in your child’s learning. In order to gauge your child’s progress, we will be doing different types of assessments. Your child will receive a weekly spelling test. Also, I will meet
with your child twice a week for a one-on-one author’s
conference to discuss their progress in writing and set
future goals. For reading, our curriculum goal is to complete one story every week while learning and practicing different reading skills. These skills include inferring, predicting, summarizing, comparing and contrasting, etc. Also, in reading, we will do individual
reading assessments bi-monthly to monitor your
child’s reading fluency and comprehension based on a new passage. As always, we encourage your child to be reading at home!
Math In math, we will take a test at the end of every unit. The amount of time needed for
each unit will fluctuate depending on the complexity of the material and student understanding. In order to gauge when material is understood, there will be assigned homework every night except
Fridays. I ask that students complete the homework on their own however, if parent help is needed, I
ask that you sign the homework. This helps evaluate if additional practice is needed. Your child will create math fact flashcards to bring home and I ask that you help your child practice those facts!
Science and Social Studies You will notice in science and social studies there are very little tests or quizzes because these subjects
are more project based. Students will have a variety
of individual and group assessments. They will be in
groups with their peers researching, experimenting and creating projects and presentations to share with the class. In terms of individual assessment, we will have both projects and tests. At the beginning of every unit, you and your child will be made aware of the
formal assessments required. Due to the fact that there
are much fewer formal assessments in these subjects; class and group participation, teamwork, effort and
